Return from a Holiday [OPEN to Mighty Avengers]
The time platform shimmered and activated, the air around it going hazy like a long straight lane of hot top in August. A ever increasing glow of white light indicated the arrival of Dr. Doom, at first only his silhouette visible, finally his cloaked form seen in all its cold detail standing on the fading platform. Doom's mask impassive, gloves clenched, the head scientist stared at him in fear as the robots scurried about their business.

[Timeslip complete. Vital signs normal. Armor online. Energy restored.]

[Present location: Laveria, Castle Doom, Subbasement Laboratories. Time: Present year.]

Doom stood, allowing the platform to fade to a swirling glow, his visual sensors accommodating for the change in light as he allowed his systems to check themselves. His mind was still on his trip, still on the mysterious Morgan Le Fey. What game is she playing at? Fulfilling her request would be quite a gamble, she would not ask such a thing unless it lent her power. Yet do I dare deny her?

[Accessing castle systems. Red Alert. Castle on Red Alert]

Doom, turned his head suddenly to the cowering scientist, who responded by stepping backwards into a console, his eyes wide. "What is this, what is happening?" Doom snapped, his electronically enhanced voice booming among the steel and stone of the laboratory. He stepped hastily towards the consoles, attempting to read all the information at once.

"It, it was the Riga satellite," the scientist blurted out, watching Doom carefully. "It malfunctioned, some sort of problem."

Doom turned his head to the scientist now, his gaze cold and heavy. The scientist was terrified, but obviously knew well it didn't do to stutter, even in fear, to Dr. Doom. "The Venom Virus was released. It launched on New York --"

"How could this be?!" Doom thundered, slamming his fist on the console and looking over the monitors. His gaze was quickly drawn to one in particular and he cursed under his breath.

"There was some kind of attack on the systems. The American heroes have traced it back, and they--" His speech was cut off by a strangled cry of pain as a bolt of energy lashed from Doom's gauntlet, his head not even turning to watch the scientist fall to the ground, his corpse smoking.

"Damnation, how could this be," Doom muttered to himself, watching the video feeds of the attack moving in on the castle. Only a second did he allow himself to dwell in self-pity and frustration. Then Doom whirled, commanding the robots in a calm voice. "Activate all castle defenses. Launch a full counter strike against the invaders. Activate the entire first squadron of Guardian Robots." The robots in the chamber immediately sprang to action at Doom's commands, the consoles lighting up with the responses.

Too late, however. Doom mused to himself, looking to see how close the invaders had been allowed before full defense systems were activated. The timing of this was most horrific. It would have to be looked into, once the Americans were dealt with.

"Maintain full defense and counter strike until Doom says otherwise," Dr. Doom ordered, as he turned and marched to the doors of the chamber. He glanced back at the time platform, frowning as much as his articulated mask allowed. It was still swirling with light, not yet fully deactivated, but there was no time.

[Time platform deactivation: 35% complete. Space time energy fluctuations: High.]

The giant door to the chamber swung open at Doom's approach, activated by a signal from his armor. There were no other means of entrance. The time platform would be safe. It must be. The door slid shut behind him, to remain sealed until his return.

His boots rang loudly on the stone as Doom hurried to the ancient steps, moving up them with enhanced speed. Four hundred pounds of power armor made quite a noise on stone, but the armor could have easily been modified to suppress it. The thought never occurred to Doom. The sound of mystical steel on stone was exactly what he wanted. Stealth was for lesser men. Today it would be useless.

He emerged into the great hall of the castle, looking much as it had for hundreds of years, the tapestries ancient, the furnishings too. Even amid the technological marvels Doom had brought to the castle, there was not a scrap of luxury or decadence. That too was for lesser men. Doom was not here to indulge, he was here to rule. And whatever came from the skies, that would not change that.

[Aerial attack detected. Scanning signals for identification.]
