[Winry appears before the camera, fiddling with her headset for a moment until she realizes it's started recording. She's wearing her regular work outfit and holding what looks like a metallic, mechanical human arm, quite similar to one you may have seen attached to a certain alchemist in prison.]

Ah, um, hello, Doctor Eggman?

I've finished building my automail sample, if you were still interested in having a look at it. I'm in the cafeteria at the moment if you wanted to stop by.

[She ends the video feed and then sets the arm aside on the table for now while she has some hot tomato soup.]

[Eggman arrives in the cafeteria around the time when she is probably close to done with her soup, cradling a small robot in his arms. The man is certainly very cheerful, walking over to Winry with a spring in his step.] Good afternoon~!

Oh, Doctor! [Indeed she's finished her soup, though it's sitting just to the right of her. She's still got a quarter glass of milk left too, but sets that aside as well. She looks up to him with a smile. ]

[She looks over the beetlesque machine in his arms.] Is that one of your creations, um, Doctor Eggman?

Why, yes! Meet Motobug! The design is one of my earliest, but I chose it for the simplicity.

[He sets it down on the ground, and it begins sliding around the cafeteria curiously.] The AI is crude, but...

[She watches after it admirably as it slides around.]

Ah, that's so great! I've never built an automa- er, robot on my own before. What all can it do? Can it talk? [She thinks back to that robot on the video earlier who seemed to be acting of its own volition.]

[Proudly, while Motobug totters around and inspects the cafeteria.] It is still in beta, so it can only recognize basic language, for now. When it is fully complete, it will conduct itself intelligently, recognize and distinguish individual people, interact with them, and decide on their threat level... o~r lack of one. A robotic guard dog, if you will, though it lacks offensive capabilities!

Oh, I see! That sounds like quite a project!

[Watching after it buzz around.] This is probably a silly question but...

[Purely in a curious tone, not critical at all:] If it's meant to be like a guard dog, then what made you decide to pick a beetle for the shape? Wouldn't making it shaped like a dog be more appropriate? [And a bit more visually appealing too, at least for her, the dog lover.]

Ohh, a dog's body shape simply takes more work to emulate. Insects work very well for basic machinery, whereas mammals are better suited for more complex work. [A fish inside of a dog is pretty weird, anyway]

I suppose that would make sense. Limbs are pretty complex after all. [Noting of course the very rudimentary front limbs on the Motobug as well as the wheel that seems to be its primary drive.]

So what does it run on? I don't see any exhaust, so it's not petroleum is it? An electrical battery, maybe?

It's my little secret, and I don't want to go spilling it in public. I hope you'll understand. But it is a renewable, safe, and clean energy source, and reliable enough for small robots and machines! [Considering the animals inside never seem particularly hurt or tired from being robot batteries...]

I guess that's pretty understandable. [Everyone's got trade secrets, and it's not like she'd need to know for automail anyway. More just a little curiosity she had. No need to press anything.]

Oh, did you want to have a look at my work? [She motions to the arm on the table.]

I'm afraid the casing gets in the way of seeing the artificial muscle and nerve fibers, but as you can see it's made with a composite of metals along with carbon and glass so that it's lightweight but without losing too much durability. And of course the aesthetics and grace of it!

This particular customization is specialized for frigid weather, actually, so it wouldn't be too necessary with the pretty mild winter we had here. But I wanted to get a chance to try out some of these ideas I picked up on a business trip. [She hadn't really had a chance to work on any automail since she tuned up Ed's several days ago, before coming here. And that was just a tune up, of course, not a complete rebuild.]

[He seems absolutely delighted as he inspects the artificial limb. Maybe someday he'll finish being giddy about all these otherworldly technologies, but for now, HE MUST LEARN.] Ooooh! Splendid! Does the mechanism run entirely from the body, or must there be some sort of internal power source? And are there any complications with integration or learning its use?

((OOC: Nnngh Aracowa, couldn't you have at least slipped some hint in there about powering it. It's possible there's some sort of power source in it, derived from alchemy, or it's possible it runs all from nerve impulses somehow. Though the likelihood of nerve impulses actually supplying enough energy is unlikely, but lolscience. *picks one since it's not like there'll suddenly be an explanation before the end of the series*))

It all runs right off the central nervous system, but it's pretty complex. [A little begrudgingly:] Honestly, we wouldn't be able to have this kind of technology without the aid of alchemy.

It usually takes about three years for the required surgery and full rehabilitation...though I know one who did it in one year...It's a quite painful process, so not everyone opts for automail back home even. Both the surgery to prepare the body for the limbs as well as the moment the limbs are hooked onto the central nervous system can be quite painful.

Hopefully with the advanced medicine that Sentience has here, it'd be even easier for someone to adjust, however. [Not that she actually expects to have any new customers here, but if someone does show up, amputated...]

((OOC: it can be retconned if they for some reason do explain it X3)

Fascinating! [Leaning in to better inspect her automail samples, ignoring Motobug gliding over and poking at his foot with its rudimentary claws.] And your world has functioning alchemy, you say? It seems there is much we can all learn from our differences!

[Especially if he can learn to replicate and use some of this tech later, but hey, there's also the sheer shiny of new technology to take into account.]

Ah, well, it's not really mysticism...It's really a science. There's all sorts of laws like Equivalent Exchange and so on...

There's nothing like magic that I know of back home, though I guess alchemy and alkahestry do seem like it at first glance. [Shape-changing homunculus, sure, but there must be some sort of explanation for that. Right?]

I'll certainly have to check! [Motobug rolls up and pokes him again.] Eh?

[It holds up a bread crust it found and speared onto the end of one of its claws.] That's bread crust. Go put it back. ... Not on the floor!

[He sighs as Motobug goes to another table and dumps the crust off where it found it, and then looks confused as its maker contradicts himself.]

I guess you could say that. We only had some of the concepts of it back home, but not really any of the technology. Except maybe for limbs. [If Doctor Eggman's opinion holds any truth.] I'm actually a mechanic.
