[Someone does not look happy.]

Wake up and get on this thing, idiot. You couldn't have been snoozing for that long.
I've been asking around this place for you since I guess you've been so lazy that you couldn't even get off your ass long enough to do some digging for relevant data. I'm real glad that the second I'm out of sight you start slacking off, thanks.

Listen up. Starting today you're going to shut the fuck up about this Mother business to anyone who isn't me. If we want out, we're gonna have to make nice with the humans already living here for a little while and see what we can use from them. I'm cleaning up your mess as best as I can, and as far as everything else is concerned, you're my sad, brain-damaged little baby brother who doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about and can't do anything right.

And that's not so far from the truth, is it.

[Birdman's hand is pressed firmly into the side of his head. Despite the pills Cain left behind when Robin took him away, he's still in a lot of pain.]

If you've got anything helpful to say here, I'm listening. Otherwise you better not waste my time.

[He starts to turn away, probably to search for more pills, then turns back too fast, this time way too close to the camera, so much venom in his voice he's almost hissing.]

And don't even think of coming here. If you think I want to see your stupid face right now, you're even more out of your mind than what I've been telling people.

Fine.

[in spite of everything, he doesn't really want out anymore. At all. Not that he knows this truly and mentally. But the idea of going back makes his heart sink. What about all the discrepancies now? Since they were replaced, that means Birdman... didn't die now? He wondered what a Birdman in another world who didn't commit crimes was like. Was he nice? A kinder brother? Would he stay alive?]

But I cannot help but wonder if there was a reason that we cannot understand for this. From my point of view you were dead. If we went back, would you try what you were trying all over again and die? Rainheart and Rita did not survive either.

[He pinches at the bridge of his nose like that's going to somehow magically drive the pain out of his head.]

From your point of view, I'm dead. But the way I saw it, I didn't even get to lay a finger on Rion. I was there, then I blinked and I was here.

Sentience replaces us, right? So this dead guy you're talking about obviously couldn't have been me. You must've run into the copy left behind.

[He stares up from behind the hand on his face.]

You knew all that, but you're still so eager to accept that I just laid down and died, huh? You should know me better than that. You know no one can touch me.

[without him more or less asking for it, but moving right along]

Is this the part where I assume you're fine with believing I was actually out of the picture? Is the reality too hard to accept now?
You're making me feel unwanted, you know.

[he drops his head, and takes a breath, preparing himself to speak his mind. It's never easy, and it's never fun, but it also seems completely necessary at this juncture.]

That is the problem, Brother. I was pulled in before you. You had not been replaced yet. Maybe it was important for me to be replaced first; I do not know her motivations.

Your copy died while trying to kill Rion, a very obvious crime by Sentience's standards. Why would her copy of you commit the crimes necessary to annihilate him?

[Cain sucks in his lower lip. He knows that the Pegasus Family program is much more adept in battle. He would never point this out directly.]

Rion and I are later programs-- since you never fought Rion, maybe you cannot know what he was capable of. Or it could have been an accident. Rita was impaled, and Rainheart was burned. Your corpse was battered terribly, the Steiner house was completely ruined. He killed Dr.Lem, too- who was made specifically to withstand us. Mother worked only to create more stable Programs after you, Brother.

[pause] And, I cannot formulate a pattern since there are only the two of us, but it may be reasonable to assume that I was going to die, too.

[He keeps listening, and his face starts clenching into pure unadulterated fury at this unstable programming, superior models, you were only a prototype shit - until something almost clicks down to a lower gear and a light from somewhere inside seems to go out. His face is still twisted, his voice still hateful, but something is very slightly off. He may not even realize anything has happened.]

you've obviously got something wrong.
why did the one left in my place attack rion? that guy had the same troublemaker streak i do is all. you'd have to leave behind a convincing copy, and what else would something pretending to be me do. sentience isn't perfect, even though you seem to be under the impression that she is. can't wait until Mother gets a load of that.

you don't know how the transfer process works either. i could've been in storage for any amount of time, and we don't know how time works in a place like this. did you ever think of that?

so you can stop swaggering like you've got the fucking answers to everything now. Any time now. You aren't cute, but I'm sure you thought of that.

[The smile is back. It's as though nothing had happened. A small hiccup, and moving right along as always.]

Your bullshitting about all this is kind of on topic with what I wanted to talk to you about though.
If you're done now, that is.

[Cain winces as he denies and dissolves the argument. From that reaction, it was probably true. But he would definitely not want to bring it up again.]

I am finished.

Thought so.

[shoddy programming cannot possibly recognize itself for what it is. then where would he and his ego be?]
[some part of him has to know that Cain is the far stronger one, but that part is an inaccessible file in an old drive nobody used anymore. Cain was terrified of him either way, and that was strength enough for him.]

There's some bitch named Nasuti who seems like she knows her way around a machine.
That name ring any bells? From what I heard, it looks like you already made a fantastic impression.

The Japanese woman who committed no major crimes. Yes.

[his eyes glaze over. This isn't going to be fun]

I have not spoken with her since my first day here.

Well thank god for that. You probably scared her enough.
But don't worry. I've been doing some damage control on your behalf, remember? If you wanna go check the shit dated from two days ago, that should get you up to speed.

You should really start chatting her up again, I think. Humans from other realities may have tech and skills we're not familiar with, and that could be useful to us. Gather up what we can get, put it to use, get out of this dump. Simple.
I'm shocked you didn't think of it.

[He catches the face Cain makes but only smiles.]

You can handle something as easy as that, right?
You are the more stable one, aren't you?

I am unsure how technology from six hundred years ago will help us, but I will do my best. [how is outdated technology going to help, Birdman?]

Well, you are the brains of our operations, right?

[Cain's eyes flick to the ground.]

Did I hurt your feelings, Brother? I never meant anything by it.

[He wonders briefly if Birdman will appreciate his mockery of a range of emotions being called feelings, and caring about their state.]

Gosh, I don't know! How is getting on the good side of the things here going to help us out, especially if humans start coming here from further points in the future. How's it going to help us to not be running around screaming about Mother and talking about every little drop of Her plans. I can't figure it out. Maybe you can tell me since I guess I just don't know shit.
That's what you're implying, isn't it.
You must think I'm stupid.
You do, don't you.

[His hand is digging hard into some spot in his scalp, the pain only increasing, but he's grinning wildly. He knows what Cain's trying to do - appease - and stomps hard on it and runs wild, completely not giving a shit about the repercussions of this. He's in too much pain and too frustrated with Cain to care.]

Oh yes. Yes, terribly. I can't get any sleep because of you. You wouldn't know what it's like, being so much better than the rest of us cretins, right? You only said as much, didn't you.
Thank you though, it's nice to know all the mopping up after you I had to do is appreciated. I work for days and this is the thanks I get. Ohh you really put me in my place, didn't you. You're a great final product, aren't you. You're wonderful. You're swell. That's why everybody loves you so much.

You are not stupid, Brother, and I do not think you are stupid. [making the distinction is very important here]

[he thinks about the tiny handful of acquaintances he's made, and the mountain of enemies. He is aware that no one loves him at this point. And it wasn't really bugging him until now. He proceeds as carefully as he can.]

This all is for Mother to decide, isn't it? She made us for different reasons. She simply had you first.

There's one less thing you're wrong about in the world. Maybe there's a little bit of hope for you.

[He notices very clearly that Cain doesn't say anything to contest that nobody likes him. He smiles so wide that all his teeth are just out there, and his voice eases from its vicious fever pitch into something soothing and soft.]

Making friends is hard, isn't it. I wouldn't know, but I could imagine something like you would have a difficult time with it. You're lucky I'm going out of my way to make all your friends for you.

I'll fix everything you fucked up. Don't worry.

Sweet little baby brother of mine.

I know you need me because you're useless, and that's okay. I don't mind taking on that burden, even after those things you said. That's how good of a person I am.

But I'd like an apology.
For what you did. For what you said. For all the things I've had to make right.
You should say you're sorry.

[The other words start sinking in deep. He can't even pull apart what is true to him anymore. He's shut off trying to piece it anymore, and just lets the words wash over him.]

I'm very sorry, Birdman. For everything I said. I was wrong.

Thank you, big Brother. I cannot get along without my family. I know that now more than ever.

[he lets the numbness in his brain take over. The fight takes effort, and he's already so worn down. Every conversation with Birdman is strangely exhausting.]

[There's a glazed, tired, dead look in Cain's eyes that he knows all too well. Birdman likes him much better that way. It's beautiful. It's perfect.]
[You're perfect.]

You're welcome~

You run along now and get on what we talked about, yeah? I'm expecting a lot from you.

[go fucking fall in a ditch and break your leg and die sucking your thumb and crying like a baby from the pain.]
[go overdose and choke on your own vomit and die.]
[go curl up someplace alone and die.]

Don't disappoint me again, kiddo. ♥

[The feed abruptly shuts off.]
