[These things always happen on sword class days, why is that?]

[Cain feels like he should question it, maybe even cancel class and stay inside with Felicia, but ultimately he decides to just carry on in the face of it all, because... why not? Whatever Sentience was talking about is really not that big a deal.]

[So, class will be happening today, and he's at the training hall at his usual time, instructing students and ready to watch them wail on each other with sticks--ready to intervene if they happen to get too enthusiastic. Otherwise, he can also be found coming and going, or stopping at the ramen stand for a meal after class.]

[Cain swallows his mouthful of noodles.] You have to give us some credit. We stand together pretty solidly these days. Aliens and hostile demons help, admittedly, and we're all too happy to perform Exterminatus on a world beyond saving.

There's still enough of us that it's rarely a concern, anyway.

So it took what, 38 thousand years since I have been aware of them to grow solidarity? [nervous laughter]

Your lot is kind of slow on the uptake. Mother is already trying to clean our planet. There is so much work to do, too.

[If he heard this about demons and aliens two days earlier he would have figure the man insane, unfortunately, however-]

Like the aliens and demons here? I have encountered a couple of human-looking demons and a couple of those grey aliens with the traffic cone horns. And those carapaces. [How bizarre this journey really has been so far.]

You say that like it's a new development. We've been at the solidarity business for quite some time longer than that. Turns out we aren't quite as genocidal as whatever you happen to be. [Okay, comparatively not THAT long, but this gross kid doesn't need to know that.]

Those- oh, you mean trolls and carapacians. They're alright, as far as xenos go. Won't touch a demon with a 10 foot pole, if I can help it, so I can't tell you much of anything about them.

It is still a pathetic time frame, regardless. So little progress was made on earth in the grand scheme of things, don't you think?

Yes, those. -I met a few very nice demons. I was surprised, considering the sort of literature available on them.

[Pause. Where are his manners? He knows better than this.]

So what is your name? I'm Cain.

I don't really think so.

[Oh yeah, that's a thing that can happen. Introductions. His eyebrows raise right on up.]

Mine is Ciaphas Cain. Family name.

Ah. My family program name designation is Pegasus. "Cain Pegasus", if I were pretending to be human, I suppose.

It is nice to meet you, Ciaphas.

[he reaches out a small, spindly hand to shake. If Ciaphas takes it, it will seem brittle and papery.]

[Cain grasps it, though more gently than he normally would with his augmented fingers.] Normally I don't let people use my given name right away, but I can probably make an exception this time.

Though calling someone else Cain will take a touch getting used to.

Just shift the vowels a little. I am more used to hearing it as Cain.[Rhymes with "fine"]

I understand not wanting to use your given name, and I do not need to. But as you said, using it for someone else is a little strange.

I have never met someone with a name in common, even if it is a Family name.

[he finds himself somewhat more comfortable with this person. If he's telling the truth, he is from a time and place where humans are way less dumb.]

[Alas, it's more like the feudal era with starships, but Cain is happy to not make another enemy today.]

That'll help a bit, the pronunciation. Anyway, use whichever you prefer. I'm not feeling especially picky today.

I hope that icon means that by "not picky" he means "drunk"

I like how Ciaphas sounds. It is regal, and a little less confusing for me.

... You know, I am not feeling terribly choosy today, either. It must be that thing about the air, right?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Must be.

[Cain pauses to slurp up a mouthful of noodles.] I It's caused me to make a few poor decisions today, but I just can't bring myself to care.

... Me too. I do not usually strangle people who let me sleep on their couches.

Or kiss girls. This has been too strange. [he lays his head down onto his folded arms]

Or try to touch strange scarred up men. I have no idea what is wrong with me. I was drunk once by accident and even then I was not so loose with my tongue and actions.

I feel like I should be humiliated.

Mm-hm. And yet, I can't bring myself to feel humiliated. Though I do have to raise my eyebrows at the strangling part. [Still, someone probably handled it, if he caused problems. Right? Right???]

Say, a scarred up man? You wouldn't happen to mean Ibram Gaunt, would you?

He looked like someone I have to kill. Nothing personal. [Entirely honest.] He did smack me in the head with his sword-key though. So it was fair enough.

I did not really catch his name. He was drunk on a beach. And very unfriendly.
