[These things always happen on sword class days, why is that?]

[Cain feels like he should question it, maybe even cancel class and stay inside with Felicia, but ultimately he decides to just carry on in the face of it all, because... why not? Whatever Sentience was talking about is really not that big a deal.]

[So, class will be happening today, and he's at the training hall at his usual time, instructing students and ready to watch them wail on each other with sticks--ready to intervene if they happen to get too enthusiastic. Otherwise, he can also be found coming and going, or stopping at the ramen stand for a meal after class.]

Good morning to you, too. [He glances down at her work briefly before deciding it's too early to actually understand it.]

A little light reading with breakfast, I see.

[she looks up at that, grinning proudly]

I'm designing a security system, Ciaphas. That incident at the start of my incarceration taught me an important lesson about taking precautions. I'll install it quick as I can, now that the rest of the wiring's sorted.

[that's enough to brief him, but after a small pause, she adds, excited:]

I've been doing a lot of reading about ancient technotheology—although of course, it wasn't theology to them—and it's absolutely fascinating stuff. Completely primitive, of course, but their understanding is astoundingly thorough despite their utter ignorance of the machine spirits. I'm beginning to wonder if, perhaps, I've been a bit unfair to our ancestors.

Well- good. Not the unfairness bit, but. Good. [Pardon him while he scrounges about the kitchen and tries to disregard the geek babble.]

Will Eridan still be able to get in?

[she pulls a face, taking a sip from her mug]

Eridan? Holy Throne, no. He may have had the run of the Shelter, but I'll be damned if that little squig manages to wiggle through my defenses.

[she turns and gives Cain a skeptical look]

Unless you want him dropping in at all hours?

[with a little wave of a mechadendrite towards the stove:]

Water's in the kettle, if you want tea.

[And tea he wants! Though only after he's done trying to avoid the impulse to say "sure, why not."]

It would be good for him to learn how to knock. Like a normal person, and all. [Smooth save, there, Cain. Even if it came a little late.]

[she makes a deadpan hm sound as she takes another swallow of her own tea, then sets the mug carefully to one side of her drawings, turning back to them]

Of course it would. He'll be forced to learn, that's certain.

[she pauses to make a little annotation with her pencil, then asks without looking up:]

Whatever do you see in him, Ciaphas?

[with another wave, this time at the oven (which is adorned with three prayer seals, one of which looks not a day old):]

There's a plate of pancakes in there, if you'd like any. I left our heretek oven on 'warm', just in case.

[This isn't the first time he's been asked, so he replies with some exasperation.]

Myself at his age, for a start.

[He knows that was the wrong thing to say, and he can't bring himself to be surprised if Felicia hops right up and executes him on the spot, but there it went. He feels pretty okay about saying it, since he long ago realized how terribly heretical he's become.]

[Maybe he'll at least get to eat those pancakes before he dies. That would be nice.]

[this time she turns around completely, rising to her feet in the same motion, the mechadendrite she was using for a stool vanishing back under her robes. She regards Cain with the most astonished expression the remaining bits of her face can manage (and if he's been paying attention, he might have observed that she's somewhat more animated than usual in the facial expressions department this morning)]

Yourself...? But he's a—Ciaphas! That's heresy!

[however, it appears she can't bring herself to care enough to execute him, because instead she makes a face and says:]

Surely you can't have been that bad when you were his age?

[He winces.] Of course I know it's heresy. I should have myself shot, and to be quite honest, I'm surprised you aren't doing the job for me right now.

[But since she's obviously not, he vaguely sort of relaxes, but still looks tense.]

... oh, not quite. I was never particularly genocidal, but I was still fairly terrible.

The wild youth of Commissar Ciaphas Cain: ooh, I'd bet the biographers would kill to hear about that.

[speaking of killing...]

I suppose I really ought to execute you. It would probably be rather easy, too. [with an affected sigh:] But this place would be far more dull without you. Lonelier, too.

[the faint smile coming back to her face should reassure him that she's joking about these being the only reasons she's not about to murder him in any of several fun and interesting ways. At ease, Commissar.]

[Cain had found himself closing his eyes in anticipation. Being able to open them again with the sight of his friend smiling at him was basically something he had quietly resigned himself to never happen.]

[It's a bit of a surprise, but an entirely pleasant one despite that inner sinking feeling that they're all very much screwed if anyone from the Imperium happens to show up.]

Appreciated.

Plus, I can't very well try your pancakes if you've got my corpse writhing about the kitchen.

[her smile widens into a grin]

And that would be a shame. I've done a good job this time.

[she collects her dishes from the table and sets them down in the sink, then takes an apple from a bowl on the counter, gives it a quick rinse with tapwater, dries it on one wide sleeve, and takes a bite out of it.]

[Cain will meanwhile go about getting those pancakes ready to eat. Which mostly involves a bit of syrup, a fork, and then his mouth. His tea is still steeping, but he's keeping an eye on it.]

You really have. S'good. [Talking with your mouthful: dignified and becoming behavior of an Imperial commissar.]

[she's still chewing her bite of apple when she replies. Talking with your mouth full: even more dignified and becoming behavior of a techno-magos of the Adeptus Mechanicus, apparently.]

I'll pass your verdict on to the Colonel—perhaps he'll stop being so silly about my cooking if he hears I've once again failed to poison anyone with it.

[she takes another thoughtful bite of apple. Conversationally:]

You've heard this morning's announcement?

You would think the man was raised by a planetary governor's personal chef. [Yeah oh diss.]

[Anyway, that's enough speaking ill of Gaunt being a picky eater while he's not here. Pancakes to be eaten, and all.]

I did. Sentience really could have stood to be a touch less cryptic.

[she chuckles a bit at his first comment, then nods at his second]

Of course it could have, but I suspect it's not in that thing's nature to speak plain Gothic. [neither is it really in hers, as she's conveniently forgetting, but we'll let that slide.] At any rate, one of the many benefits afforded me by having a head full of the blessings of the Omnissiah is knowing when—and fairly well how—it's being messed with.

Don't keep me in suspense, then. [He finishes up his pancakes and puts the plate in the sink.]

[she chuckles, casually resting the hand not occupied by her apple in the crook of the other arm]

I won't overburden you with an anatomy lesson—or a chemistry one at that, as fascinating as the processes at work here are—but whatever's in the air is affecting us... a bit like alcohol, really. Making us more likely to act on impulse, let up on our self-control a bit, that sort of thing.

Naturally, I ought to be furious. In my current state, however, I honestly can't be bothered to give much of a frak at all. Curious how that works, isn't it?

[another bite of apple signifies the end of Exposition Hour.]

Huh. [He leans against the counter, gathering his tea. Delicious, bitter tanna--even with the weather starting to warm up a bit, he still appreciates the bite.]

That explains a few things. Not sure I would willingly talk about Eridan like that, for a start.

Secondly, you seem much more lively than usual today. It's nice.

[that gets another grin out of her, and she shakes her head]

Omnissiah forgive me, but it's such a bother, that mask of ours. I've always been abysmal at it—even with near ninety years of practice. [she shrugs, as stiffly as usual.] Just can't keep a straight face, me, I suppose; even a mostly-augmetic one.

[He sets down the mug, returning the smile.] You don't have to keep it up, you know. You're a perfectly charming, devoted person as you are.

Or is that my heresy talking? I may be leading you down a slippery slope.

[she gestures dismissively with her apple, unconsciously mirroring him by leaning against the counter, too]

I've got myself up to my nose in heresy already—a little more won't make a scrap of difference. [playfully:] Especially not when it's as flattering as that. You're altogether too kind, Ciaphas.

I'm just sorry that I haven't said it any sooner. Then again, flirting with a magos seemed a bit inappropriate under other circumstances.

[He curls an arm around her, trying to mind her various everything running along her spine.] Feel free to tell me to shove off, on that note. I won't take offense.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[she looks briefly surprised, then smiles again and steps in a bit closer, slipping an arm over his and resting her hand on his shoulder]

Wouldn't dream of it.

Do you know, after that incident with the little flying robots a couple weeks ago, I've been wondering what it would be like to be this close to you again without being encased in an impenetrable death trap.

I'd imagined it might be quite nice.

You, too? [He can't help but feel a bit pleased about that--both her admission and the apparent returned interest.]

Hopefully I can compete with the Ciaphas of your imagination. Was there any kissing in that scenario, by any chance?
