[Action | Open]
[She's a little absent-minded this morning - the events of the night before are still whirling through her thoughts, causing little thrills of excitement and nervousness which seem to wipe her mind clean the moment they hit. She manages to get up on time and get ready for her shift well enough, but after putting together her lunch, she leaves the little box on the counter and wanders out the door.

Once she arrives, she takes a moment to make a cup of tea before she begins what she hopes will be a somewhat interesting shift; not that she wants anyone to fight or get hurt, but she needs something to draw her out of her thoughts. She also looks quite different from most days: she's unusually dressed up for a simple shift, and very oddly for her, her hair is loose around her shoulders and brushed to a shine. She's even got a touch of gloss on her lips, although that's as far as she dared go with makeup.

Anyone who comes into HQ will find her dipping a teabag in and out of a mug, staring off into the distance.]

[ Jeanne shakes her head. ] Me, either. [ She does take note of that gesture, head tilted in curiosity. ] You look like you've got something else on your mind...

Oh... I'm sorry, I didn't mean to drift off like that. I've just had trouble focussing today.

[Blushing furiously.]

It's okay. [ Jeanne smiles, shifting forward so she can rise to her feet. Then she steps over, leaning with her arms on the edge of the table. ] I know it's probably not to exciting, sitting in here all day.

N-No, it's not that... [Turning her mug around and around in her hands. It's made her happy, but it's still such an awkward thing to talk about.

Suddenly, her mind gets a little ahead of her mouth, and she blurts out a question that didn't have the most positive answer last time she asked it:]
Jeanne, have you ever had a boyfriend?

[ That catches her by surprise, but she tries her best to mask the sudden onrush of memories with a soft smile. ] A few. [ Jeanne turns to sit on the edge of the desk, now, hands behind her head. ] None were serious, exce--

[ No, she can't really call Seifriet a "serious" boyfriend. Some days she didn't know what to call it. She gives her a look out of the corner of her eye. ] Why? Are you missing someone from home?

[She was all ready to apologise for blurting out such a personal question, but Jeanne seems to be alright with it, so she focusses on her answer instead. It's something she still has trouble talking about.]

No... my friend from home and I, we... we started going out yesterday. [She blushes even more deeply, but the smile also creeps back onto her lips.] But I've never been someone's girlfriend, and - I don't know what to do. How to act. Y'know?

Oh! That's... [ --girl talk? Jeanne is all over this. She glances around, to make sure no boys were in hearing range, and steps away.

Only to come back a moment later with a chair she can sit down on, close to Nakama. ]
I might not have a lot of practical experience, but believe me, I've read a loooot of magazines.

Hmm. Where to start...?

[The reaction surprises her a little, but she's relieved that someone's willing to offer her advice. If they're a little overeager about it, she can live with that.]

Well... I was worried about being too affectionate, 'cause he's... not shy, really, but uncomfortable with that kinda thing. But he let me hold his hand while we were walking home yesterday, and he even - [Her voice catches at the memory, requiring her to clear her throat and start again.] - kissed my cheek in public. So I guess that's not as big of a problem as I thought. I just don't want to get to the point where I'm embarrassing him.

[ She just thinks this kind of innocent curiosity is so precious and heartwarming.

And she's even... jealous, a bit. She hasn't had any luck here in the prison for a myriad of reasons. Jeanne taps her chin with a finger. ]
Hmm... it sounds like you have to play it slow. I'm not used to that, personally! But... every man has their own boundaries. Some are smooth and want you to be the one to catch their eye. Others are happy if you just so much as look their way.

--if I can ask, what's his name? It'll be easier if I don't just say "him" or "his" or "that boy" the whole time.

[She giggles a little at the idea of Ushiro being 'smooth.']

Yeah. I guess I shouldn't get too ahead of myself either... I mean, it hasn't even been a full day yet.

Oh, his name's Jun Ushiro, but he mostly goes by Ushiro.

It is kinda fun. I'm nervous a lot of the time, but sometimes I just - I just suddenly remember what he said, and I feel so happy. I never thought it'd happen...

[She cocks her head curiously.] Oh, do you know him?

[ Jeanne beams. ] The important thing is not to let those nerves stop you! [ Such a hypocritical piece of advice. ] Th absolutely, one-hundred percent worst thing you can do is let a chance pass you by. [ --wow, who is she talking to? Nakama, or herself?

She shakes her head. ]
No, I don't. I think I might have heard it over the network sometime. I almost always have it on.

I'm pretty bad at that. [A little laugh.] But I'm learning to take chances. The worst that can happen is never as bad as I make it in my head.

Yeah, Ushiro's... not very social. He doesn't do too well with new people. [She's in such a daze that even this sounds affectionate.] I think that might be part of why he likes me, 'cause I'm familiar.

[She certainly can't come up with any other reasons.]

Familiar is good...! Sometimes, that's all it takes for something to get started. A spark, so to say. [ She wishes she had something like that right about now. Jeanne sighs, eyes downcast a moment.

--no, this isn't the time for that. She rewinds back to the first comment and points a finger up. ]
When it comes to the wost, I think the most important thing to remember is to be forgiving. I had a boyfriend once who did a few things that just frustrated the he--

Erm, heck out of me. [ Whoops. ] And chasing after him didn't really work. He worked things out and came back, in the end, but it was still a rocky time.

[ A sheepish laugh. ] I'm not saying anything like that will happen, just... you know? It's good to be prepared.

[She looks quite sheepish at that advice.]

Yeah, you're right. I can get... kind of bossy, honestly, and I've yelled at him in the past because I've just gotten so frustrated. But it just makes him even more mad, and then bad things happen. I'm working on being more patient with him, 'cause if you talk to him calmly about things, he pays way more attention.

Hmm~ I can't really give you tips on that. I'm not used to barking orders at my men, because most of them were pretty happy to do whatever they were told! [ Bit of a grin. ] I did try to keep work fun, though.

But you know how to deal with him, which is definitely a plus!

It's taken awhile of living with him to figure it out, but I guess I have. [Grinning a little.] It's funny, actually... we didn't get along at all, back in our world. I thought he was a total jerk.

I think it's more that... we figured each other out. There were lots of us back home, so we could pick the people we liked at first and avoid everyone else. But here, it's just us... so we had no choice but to look deeper.

[Thoughtfully.] I do think this place has made me better, though.

[ As to the introspection... ] You think so?

[She's an odd mix of unusually mature and utterly naive, this one.]

Well, yeah... I think it's because I didn't really - well, to be honest, I didn't have any friends back home. It was just me and my mom. So I didn't think about other people, I didn't bother considering their viewpoint. I just hated them.

But here I haven't even got my mom, so I've had to meet more people and make connections, and... you can't really think in black and white when you deal with people, can you? They teach you so many other sides to things. It opens up your mind a bit.

Does that make sense?

[ She nods. ] I think so. You'd be surprised how many people would probably have the same viewpoint, even if they didn't grow up in your situation.

[ Jeanne rises, stretching her arms above her head, pacing a circle around the desk just so she isn't idle. It helps her think. ] The military back home had a problem just like that. I wish they had the sense to come to your conclusion before things went too far...

Um... [She watches Jeanne pace, wondering what to say to that.] I think maybe it takes something pretty big to make you change how you feel about everything. Even if you get the feeling that you're wrong... change is hard, y'know?

[Nodding slightly to herself. That makes sense.]

[ She shakes her head. ] I don't think a lot of them ever thought they were wrong, that's the trouble. "Might is right," or something like that. [ Jeanne stops and shrugs. ] I'm past all that. Literally, in time... I'm just glad Acumen waited to pick me up until after the hard part was over.
