Dexter episodes two and three
One of the things I really like about this show is the way that there's an underlying case that's ongoing but there's other stuff going on around...other cases, Rita, Dexter's extra-curricular activities. It sets a great pace.

[info]bookgirl24 brought up something in the last post that I was thinking about when I watched these 2 episodes last night. It has to do with Dexter's feelings. He says he doesn't experience them and yet sometimes it seems like he does. I've noticed how much he hates to see kids hurt. And how he didn't want to disappoint his Mom or Harry by killing something bigger. Has anyone else noticed those or any other idiosyncrasies? I wonder if his knowledge of how one is supposed to feel comes from observing people. It must be exhausting to be so detached that you have to go through such a complicated thought process before responding to a situation. First he has to recognize what's going on, decide on a 'normal' reaction, and then put on his game face. THOUGHTS?

I so love the way that Dexter let's his victims know exactly why they're dying and how he makes them confess first. YOU?

I'm also fascinated by the creativity and clues from the Ice Truck killer. hee

Anyone want to talk book differences?

Now I'm off to watch 104. :D

He says he doesn't experience them and yet sometimes it seems like he does.

I replied to this in [info]bookgirl24's comment that I don't completely believe that he fells nothing. What do the books say? I haven't read them. Does he do this "what would a normal person do?" dialogue with himself? He's a natural with the kids.

My thoughts are that either
1) he doesn't recognise that he actually feels for these people around him; or
2) Harry's code includes what is 'right behaviour' and vice versa and it is so ingrained that it comes out naturally; or
3) he has some sort of detached personality where he'll go thru the motions but not feel too deeply.

**Not sure if any of the above made sense - too much food today - my brain is mush!**

Dexter appealed to me the way Tom Ripley appealed to me but more so because of his code. Tom Ripley felt deeply for the people he killed and he killed for self-preservation not from a need to do so.

Don't know why that came up - just that I always drew some parallels between the two characters and felt that if Tom Ripley could feel, Dexter should too.

He absolutely does the what would a normal person do/say commentary, in every situation. He talks about how he misses people's jokes, which they illustrate excellently on the show.

I LOVE the icon. lol

I wonder if it's not really a combination of the three things. I don't know if it comes out in the series but in the books, he recognizes Cody and Astor as being like him. (shit I hope this doesn't spoil anything.)

He does seem detached but he tries and why try if you don't feel something. I mean he seems to want to comfort Rita at times, he enjoyed the BJ and was ok if their quiet conversations included more sexual activity and yet, he's inappropriate and often removed.

Hee, I'm not sure I'm making much sense...it's still early and I haven't been awake long. ;)

That's an interesting perspective. Will think about that. Will probably look for the book too.

I have a slight problem with marathoning S1 cuz having really enjoyed S2 and seeing his development there I find it difficult to make comments that won't spoil S2 for you. There's a lot of personal development there. S1 was his back story. S2 is his present and future.

I really enjoyed the first 2 books but the third was shitty.

Well, we'll have a blast next month then. ;)

I'd read the 1st book just to get more insight into his character. Apparently, S1 was based on the book but S2 went off into its own arc. It was one of those before the writers strike. I've heard that writers have been majorly inspired since the resolution of the strike and we're in for some great TV over the next year!! whoopie!

Does he refer to himself as the Dark Avenger? I'll have to listen for that.

I do miss the Dark Passenger from the books though.

I am amazed at the level of intelligence that both Dexter and the Ice Truck Killer demonstrate (I'll have plenty to say about it by Episode 12)

hee, me too. ;)

I know that serial killers are often methodical and intelligent but the level or restraint that these 2 show is astounding. Although, I'm not sure Dexter is your typical serial killer. I have a half-formed theory that he's like a cross between normal and serial killer...a hybrid of sorts. I am always drawn to Harry saying that he was scared to early, that they thought he could be saved but it seems it was too late (of course that's all a paraphrase but you get the gist. lol).

Anyway, it seems like his serial killer self wasn't fully formed and neither was his psyche allowed to form naturally.

Does any of that make sense? I'm not sure. lol

Actually this conflict was dealt with very completely in S2.
