Five days after her run in with Xan and the bike from Hell, Yanagi was once again feeling safe walking across campus. For that reason, she had decided it would be a good time to move her things from her summer dorm into the dorm where she’d be spending the school year. Her meager possessions packed in five moderately sized cardboard boxes. The trek to her new dorm room wasn’t long at all, and so she wasn’t concerned about having to carry anything heavy. It helped that she was strong from so many years of archery. Few humans could draw her bow, she strung it so tight. Doing so not only kept her limber but made her shots stronger.
With a smile, she plucked one of the boxes from the frame of her bed. She balanced the box on her hip when she paused in the hall to lock her dorm room, and then made her way to the end of the hall. Lifting her wings so they wouldn’t get caught between her body and the door, she pushed the swinging door to the stairs open with her shoulder and side, and made her way down three flights of stairs to the first floor. Some nice someone – she thought he might be a demi-god – held the door for her so she could slip out.
Pausing, Yanagi turned her face upward, feeling the warmth of the sun on her skin. She stood in front of the building for a minute, spreading her wings behind her and imagining the wind in her hair as she raced through the sparse clouds. She didn’t know anything about her roommate other than the woman’s name, but she hoped she might find another angel. Or maybe just someone who liked to fly. While Yanagi did enjoy her time alone, she thought it might be nice to have someone to fly with, to share the joy of the wind with. Carly, much as she loved the vampire, couldn’t really fly, and the first (and last) time Yanagi had mentioned flying, Carly had suggested they jump off buildings together. Yanagi had redirected Carly’s attention to Halo.
Drawing her wings against her back, Yanagi hurried down the sidewalk, keeping a careful eye out for errant drivers on motorcycles. Ever since Xan had nearly run her over, she’d been terrified to walk down the street. Now that she realized the likelihood of getting driven over a second time was low, she was alright about walking. But she was still wary. She really didn’t want to deal with smashed up toes again. It had been a far from pleasant experience, though she wasn’t sure if the pain or Carly’s inclination to rip out Xan’s windpipe had been worse. She still hadn’t figured it out.
Thankfully, the trip from her old dorm to her new one took only a few minutes and one trip across a street. It took a minute to get the main door open. Juggling the box in her arms, she pulled the door out and caught it with her toe, kicking it the rest of the way. Pulling her wings close, she slid quickly through the door. An unfortunate run-in with a door her freshman year had taught her to move quickly. Catching even the tip of her wing in a closing door was as bad as catching a finger, and it happening once was more than enough to train her to be fast.
Since she was only going to the second floor, Yanagi bypassed the elevator and went up the stairs to the second floor. She went down the hall slowly, reading each number carefully. Despite the fact that she had been in America for years, American numbers still confused her. She read them out loud until she reached 209, at the far end of the hall. Shuffling her box to her hip again, she lifted her hand and knocked on the door, all sorts of feelings bubbling up in her chest. Hopefully her roommate would be wonderful. Hopefully they could be good friends.
Hopefully, she wouldn’t mind a redheaded vampire barging in at one in the morning to demand love in the form of Call of Duty.
