He gets it finally, really he does.
He tells Martin so.
Martin blinks, opens his mouth, closes his mouth, opens it again.
Then, he hits him.
It all starts with a moment of truth, seeing his friend just a little bit broken on the edges after a drug bust. He can't see why they had to choose Martin for the undercover mission, he's Missing Persons not Donnie Brasco, but they did and he went along with it, so he gets back after two weeks looking downtrodden and miserable for his trouble.
So he keeps near him, being the silent pillar of support. He makes the man's spirits raise, or so he likes to think. He manages the happiness in Martin's personal space, or so he has told himself.
And Martin says nothing, just relaxes one iota when he steps closer, smiles just a bit truer when he smiles at him, so it's worth it.
Until this moment of truth turned into something different, and it all went to hell.
Viviane walks up to him, leans against his desk, smiles that wise smile of hers that irritates the hell out of whoever isn't in the know.
He isn't in the know this time, so he snaps at her with a Yes, Viv?
Her smile becomes wider, and she asks how Martin is doing.
He relaxes, lets his irritation leave. Assures her that his best friend is doing fine, thank you.
She nods her head, getting the information she apparently wanted. Then, as she turns away, she says It's a good thing you two love one another so much.
And he is left watching her walk away, with mouth slack and eyes wide.
All right, that was freaky.
So now that he is clued in, he watches Martin with speculation, which of course the younger man picks up like cat hair on a lint brush. They start to eye each other warily, Martin because he’s getting looked at funny, and him because Jesus, it’s true isn’t it?
Martin gets him coffee, he feels deliriously happy before he can stop himself. Martin walks beside him, and he feels like skipping, which is a bit confusing now that he’s noticing it. Martin fucking yawns, and he’s hit with the thought of how cute the guy is before he shakes himself in disgust.
So now he’s clued in.
He glares at Viviane from across the room, and silently fumes as she just grins at his fury.
He finally gets it, really he does. He walks over to Martin before end of shift, makes sure no one is around, especially that meddling Viviane, and leans in close.
He tells Martin what he now understands, using phrases like oh well and I figure since and we’ll just have to deal with it.
Martin blinks, opens his mouth, closes his mouth, opens it again.
He leans in to kiss him, and gets hit in the jaw for his trouble.
But when his head stops spinning, and as he notices he’s sprawled out in the most undignified way, he also finds that Martin is kneeling next to him rapidly saying I’m sorry I’m sorry it was a reflex I’m sorry Danny and looking very much upset.
He sits up--with support from Martin--and rubs his jaw. Yeah, there’s going to be a bruise there.
Asks if this is going to happen every time he tries to kiss him, and if so, Martin really has issues that he needs to work on if they’re going to have a relationship that works.
Martin looks absolutely sheepish, and laughs low in his throat before leaning in to kiss where the bruise is forming.
Says something about how no, that will be the only time, and he starts to feel that delirious feeling again.
The next day, he walks in and grins at Viviane, leans down so that he’s next to her ear, and promises that, even though she was correct in her assumption, revenge is eminent.
She grins back, lightly touches his cheek, and tells him to bring it on.
