rpwrimo log - Fred and Sylvie
Who: Fred Weasley & Sylvie Fawcett (featuring Carine Fawcett and other various family members
Where: Fawcett house, Ottery St Catchpole
When: Autumn 1988
Why: To cause trouble
Fred had been banned from spending time with George. No matter how much Fred tried to convince his mum that he wouldn't get sick because only one twin could be sick at once and their bodies had special powers to prevent them from both being sick at once or, when that failed as it was inevitably going to, telling her that he didn't care if he got sick, Molly was not budging. Fred had been dragged out of his bed room multiple times, after sneaking back in. Although not one to give up easily, it seemed that he was just going to have to amuse himself without George for a little while, at least until his mum got too distracted by other things to notice if he snuck back in to visit George.
"You can play with Ron or Ginny instead." his mother had told him, earning her a glare from Fred. He didn't want to spend all day with Ron or Ginny, they were no fun at all if he wanted to cause trouble. And Fred Weasley always wanted to cause trouble. Once his mother had left the room to check on George again Fred started his escape. "I'm at the Fawcett's if mum asks." he told Ron on the way out the door. "But don't tell unless she asks or else your teddy will be a spider again. And no, you can't come with me so don't ask." with that he was out the door before their could be any protests.
Sylvie Fawcett was Fred's favourite neighbour even if she was unfortunate enough to be Ron's age. More often than not he liked her more than he liked the rest of his siblings (George excluded, of course). She was way more likely to want to have actual fun with him. Actual fun meaning trouble making fun which was, of course, the best type of fun.
Arriving at the Fawcett's house and knocked on the door, hoping Sylvie would answer.
Unfortunately for Fred, it was Carine Fawcett who answered the door, looking a bit frazzled as she looked down and saw their neighbour, before she turned and called into the house. "Sylvie! Annette! C'est Fred." After years of knowing each other, Carine had developed Molly's sense of being able to tell the twins apart - or maybe it was just a lucky guess. No one would ever know.
Eight-year-old Sylvie bounded down the stairs, having been forced to stay inside all morning for something or other. But she'd had lunch not too long ago, and she'd been already preparing to go outside when she heard her maman call.
"Hi!" she called as she saw her older friend, pulling on her coats and gloves and thinking how much fun it would be to jump in the leaves. Or cause some sort of trouble. Or both.
"Stay in the yard," Carine said in near perfect English, mostly for Fred's benefit, "Sylvie, where is your sister?"
"Upstairs, I don't want her coming," Sylvie replied, sticking out her bottom lip.
Carine gave Sylvie a 'look' before turning to the stairs and saying, "I'll send her out once she's dressed for the weather."
"Lame," Sylvie said after stepping outside and closing the door, "What do you want to do?"
Sylvie's mother opening the door was probably the worst case scenario for Fred because she seemed to be the strictest and Fred had plenty experience getting rid of annoying siblings like Annette. Thankfully she wasn't telling him that Sylvie wasn't allowed to play. A bored Fred was never a safe thing.
"Hi Sylvie!" he replied as she came to the door, choosing to not respond to Carine's request for them to stay in the yard. Setting rules was a bad idea when it came to Fred, it just made him want to break it more. Once the door was shut Fred agreed with Sylvie's 'lame'. Annette would make having fun harder. Hopefully the two would be able to cause trouble before Annette had to join them and tried to stop them.
"Anything fun." Fred answered Sylvie question. "George is home sick and it's so boring." he looked around the yard for something to do. "Want to cause some trouble?"
"'Course!" Sylvie replied looking around the yard for something fun and mischievous to do.
"What if we took a bunch of leaves..." she began as she looked at the cover of them all over the ground (except under the tree that she'd accidentally set afire earlier that summer, of course) "And took them up on the roof and then when Annette comes out she won't be able to find us and we can throw them on her!"
It was a foolproof plan, really! There was the little issue of getting up on the roof of her two storey house, but Sylvie was positive her dad had a ladder somewhere, and if he could climb up one, so could she!
"Yeah!" Fred agreed enthusiastically. "Then we won't have to play with Annette because she won't be able to find us." Maybe he and Sylvie hadn't thought this plan through very well but that didn't matter. It would still be fun! Especially the getting up onto the roof bit. He looked up at the roof, which was actually pretty far up but that didn't faze Fred. He was sure he and Sylvie would still manage to get up there.
Fred started gathering up leaves, shoving handfuls of them into his jacket pockets, crushing many of them as he did so. "Do you know where your parents keep a ladder?" he asked as he collected leaves, trying to work out a way to get onto the roof. "Or broomsticks! We could fly onto the roof!" Fred loved flying! He wasn't really allowed to do it very often, unlike Charlie who always went flying when he was home from school. It was unfair really, Fred thought he was just as good at flying as Charlie! Or, he would be if he was actually allowed to fly more often.
Broomsticks!!! Why hadn't Sylvie thought of that?! "Yeah!" she exclaimed, "There are the ones Jerome and Claude use at home over the summer. We can fly on those!"
It would be so much easier if she was big and had a wand and then she could make her pockets bigger or make a bag or something for the leaves, but maybe there would be some on the roof, too. Sylvie could hope!
"They're in the shed, c'mon!" she said, leading Fred around to the back of the house and the small shed where they kept all the outdoor toys - balls and hula hoops and bikes and, of course, brooms. The brooms were in the back, of course, but Sylvie didn't mind climbing over other things to get to them.
"Great!" Fred said, shoving a few last handfuls of leaves into his almost overflowing pockets before following Sylvie to the shed. Hopefully between the two of the they'd managed to collect enough leaves to have fun when Annette came outside. He knew there was a reason Sylvie was his favourite neighbour and her enthusiasm at his flying idea reminded him why he'd chosen her to make trouble with. "Flying is so much fun! And it will make getting to the roof really quick." he said, searching through the shed with Sylvie. A couple of times he got distracted by some of the items in there, playing with them for a few seconds before remembering that finding brooms was much more important and fun.
"Found them?" Fred asked as he reached the back of the shed, after climbing over many items. Just finding the brooms was like a fun obstacle course and Fred was definitely enjoying it. Sylvie had gotten there before him, since she hadn't stopped to look at as many things as Fred had and she had gotten a head start (not that it had been a race, Fred would've tried to get there first if that had been the case) so he was hoping she'd managed to find the brooms.
"Oui!" Sylvie replied, pulling out Jerome's broom and handing it to him, while she grabbed Claude's for herself, thankful that neither of her brothers were good enough to be on the Hufflepuff Quidditch team and their brooms stayed here during the school year. From there it was just climbing over everything again to make it back outside into the sun.
The roof seemed so much higher now that Sylvie was out and looking at it, and truth be told, she'd never flown that high before, or without her dad supervising, but she wasn't the type to back down from a dare (or even an idea she had), and she grabbed the broom, looking over at Fred. "Ready?"
Once they were both out of the shed, broomsticks in hand, Fred climbed onto his and got ready to take off. "Ready!" he replied, before pushing off and hovering a little unsteadily above the ground. Alright, maybe he wasn't quite as good at flying as Charlie but he would be one day! He was sure of it. He waited for Sylvie to get on her broom before he started flying towards the roof. He shot off a little fast at first, giving himself a little bit of a fright before managing to slow down and gently fly to the roof. He tried to make it look as if he'd gone really fast on purpose though, he didn't want anyone to think he couldn't fly or that he was scared of doing dangerous things because he could and he wasn't but that was just a little faster than he'd been expecting to go.
Fred reached the roof and landed a little bumpily, he'd have to work on landing next time he was allowed to fly! Once he was off his broom he scrambled to a good sitting spot and waited for Sylvie to join him.
Sylvie was perhaps a little nervous, but she wasn't going to show it. Biting her lip in determination, she followed Fred, weaving much more unsteadily as him and gripping tightly so she wouldn't fall off. But she didn't! And while she landed with a bigger bump than Fred, it was all forgotten when she saw the view.
"Maman and Annette will never find us up here!" Sylvie said in delight, scrambling over to the front edge of the house to look down to her front yard. "This is brilliant!"
"It's wicked!" Fred agreed. "It's going to be funny watching them try to find us!" He could just imagine them, looking for him and Sylvie everywhere while they were sitting on the roof, laughing and throwing leaves. It was going to be so funny. It was a pity George had to miss out on it but at least he'd have a great story to share when he got back home! He wondered whether he'd be able to fly up to the top of his own roof. Maybe he'd have to try it some day...
As far as Sylvie was concerned, no one would ever find them up here! Maman would think she left the yard and freak out and look all over for her and probably get all angry, but then since Sylvie was technically in the yard, she couldn't get in trouble for it! (or at least, in an ideal world that's how it would work.) And it was almost if they'd heard Sylvie and Fred, because Carine and Annette walked out the front door right that moment.
Putting her finger over her lips, Sylvie tossed a handful of leaves over the roof, pulling back so neither her maman or sister could see where it came from.
Fred was excited to see Sylvie's mum and sister enter the yard and happily obliged as Sylvie told him to be quiet. Usually it was harder than that to shut him up but for the sake of trouble making Fred could be very very quiet. Or very very loud. It really depended on what trouble was being made but in this case he was going to keep silent.
Fred pulled a handful of leaves out of his pocket and started throwing them off the roof too, watching in amusement as Carine and Annette looked for him and Sylvie. This had been such a good plan.
Sylvie had to keep herself from giggling aloud, as she heard her maman call her name with increasing annoyance, looking around as Annette batted at the leaves falling down into her brown plaits.
She thought perhaps she caught her Maman's eye for a second before ducking down again. But when she peeked over again, she didn't see Carine Fawcett anywhere.
"I think we're safe," Sylvie told Fred.
Once Sylvie said they were safe Fred let out the laugh he'd been holding back while watching Annette get covered in leaves. "That was great fun!" he said. "They never even knew we were here!" He and Sylvie were geniuses for coming up with this plan! "You could come up here anytime you wanted to hide from Annette!" Fred really would have to check out his own roof as a hiding place. It would be fun to tell Ron they were playing hide and seek then sit on the roof for hours watching Ron trying to find him. Just the thought of it made him laugh again. "This was so brill!"
"That's because we're brill!" Sylvie replied proudly.
"Non, you're in trouble," came a voice from behind her, and turning, Sylvie saw her maman finish climbing off the ladder and onto the roof, lips pressed tightly together in a frown.
Crap! Maman had seen her, and Sylvie found herself pouting. "Why? We're in the yard!"
"The roof is not the yard," Carine said, heavier accent creeping in indicating she was upset, "And you know you are not supposed to use the brooms without your papa around. And Fred, I flooed your mère so she would know what you're up to as well. Now who is coming down first?"
Fred was about the agree that they were the most brilliant people ever when he head Sylvie's mother behind him. He had to stop himself from swearing (even at 10 years of age he had picked up a fair bit of bad language which his mother scolded him for frequently). "But the roof is in the yard." Fred protested, not really caring that talking back would probably just get him in more trouble.
Oh crap. His mother. Fred contemplated whether if he refused to get down from the roof his mum would leave him alone or if it would only get him in more trouble. He'd like to believe it was the first but he was smarter than to actually believe it. "Do we get to fly down at least?" Fred asked hopefully, in an attempt to make getting into trouble more fun. By now Fred was used to getting into trouble but he still didn't enjoy it, his mother was scary when she was mad.
Carine took out her wand and levitated both brooms, slowly bringing them to the ground below so they wouldn't break as an answer.
"Down the ladder," she said, stepping onto it, "I will be behind you to make sure you don't fall. I don't fancy a trip to Mungo's today. Sylvie?"
Sylvie sighed. "Why can't Fred go first?" she whined.
"Why do you insist on making this worse for yourself?" was her maman's reply, and with a pout, Sylvie let her mother help her down the ladder, where Carine, no longer needing to use English for Fred's benefit told her to go wait in her room and that she'd be coming up to deal with Sylvie soon. And with her daughter sent off, Carine climbed the ladder again to get Fred.
Fred watched the brooms being taken away from him with disappointment. Ladders were way more boring than broomsticks. As Sylvie began climbing down the ladder Fred decided to continue emptying his pocket of leaves, throwing them off the roof until it was his turn to climb down the ladder. "BYE SYLVIE! I'LL SEE YOU LATER!" he called to her as she headed back towards the house, before starting his descent down the ladder. When he reached the bottom he thanked for letting him play with Sylvie before scurrying away to face his own mother before sharing his adventure with George. If Molly let him that was, which was doubtful now that he'd been caught on the roof. But Fred could always hope.
