Cho and Marietta! magic_days-verse Who: Mare and Cho Where: Hogwarts When: December, 1995 Why: Because I thought it could be fun to RP out the Cho telling Mare she snogged Harry thing since we never did.
It was almost time to go home for the winter hols, and even though Marietta was not thrilled about the DA meeting and Cho making her leave while she stayed behind, she had to admit that in general she was in a good mood - she was going to see Owl Express over the hols, after all! And have another birthday celebration, and be away from all this illegal club nonsense for a couple weeks.
Assuming Harry didn't kill Cho while she stayed behind. He wouldn't do that, right? Everyone in the DA would know it was him (although who would believe their word against the boy Who Lived?). Why did Cho have to make such destructive decisions? It really wasn't good so soon after Cedric...
Marietta hugged a pillow to her chest as she sat on her bed in her night robe, hoping Cho wouldn't be long.
When Cho told Marietta to go on without her, she also meant that Mare didn't have to wait up for her -- but that wasn't to say she wasn't expecting it. So as she slowly made her way back to Ravenclaw tower, still smiling from the kiss, she prepared herself for an interrogation. The bronze door knocker was nothing compared to the questions that would be waiting for her on the other side.
The common room was full of people studying and a group of third years playing Gobstones: no Marietta in sight. But of course she would be waiting in the dormitory where they could talk freely without worrying about being overheard. So when Cho stepped inside, she was not at all surprised to see Marietta staring straight at her.
"Hello," she chirped as nonchalantly as possible before heading toward her trunk to change out of her uniform.
"Hi. So what was that all about, then?" Marietta wasn't generally the sort to be so terse and to the point, but ever since receiving that letter from her mum about Harry and Sirius Black, Harry Potter and the whole DA were an even touchier subject for her than usual. And she knew Cho knew how she felt about the DA, and that making her worry more than she normally did was not a good idea.
"You could have easily been caught," she added, "Staying out so late."
"But I wasn't caught." Cho spun around to fix Marietta with a look. Why was she always so controlling? Cho was old enough to make her own decisions, thank you very much. If she still needed a mother to look out for her, she wouldn't be at boarding school.
"Anyway," she added a little less coldly, "I just wanted to thank Harry for all the work he's put into teaching us Defence. I mean, it's his OWL year, so it's really nice of him to take on all that extra work..." She bit the corner of her lip, trying to decide if she should make Mare ask another question before she shared the real news. Might as well get it all out out once. "...and maybe we ended up under some mistletoe, and, well, I think you can figure out what happened from there." Cho turned back to her trunk, busying herself with changing into her nightgown while she waited for Marietta's reaction.
Marietta's reaction was one of stunned silence. She should have expected something like this to happen eventually, with the way Cho had been mooning over Harry Potter, but it still didn't make her any happier.
"Lovely," she finally got out, although the tone of her voice suggested that she didn't find the idea one bit lovely. Why couldn't Cho be at all sensible and realise Harry and his stupid club were bad news!
Cho didn't even bother to hold back her exasperated sigh. Marietta always got like this when Cho talked about boys, probably because she was jealous. And she seemed especially jealous in the case of one Harry Potter, even going so far as to claim that he was somehow too dangerous for Cho.
"Look," she said flatly, "I know you don't like Harry. But I do. Can't you just be happy for me for once?"
"You act like I'm never happy for you," Marietta pouted, "I'm happy for you lots of times, but I wouldn't be a very good friend now if I didn't tell you when you were making bad decisions, now would I? And Harry Potter? He's a bad decision, Cho. He's going to get us all expelled!"
Marietta did have a tendency to get jealous of Cho's boyfriends, true. But that was because the shy and socially awkward girl couldn't seem to catch a bloke's fancy next to her gorgeous best friend. But even all that aside, Harry Potter was completely different!
Completely different because he's famous, maybe, which just made her jealous ten times worse. It was all very simple to see.
"I thought I told you I wasn't going to argue about the DA anymore," Cho said quietly as her eyes filled with tears for the second time that evening. "H-he didn't even h-have time to say anything about me, Mare. Before h-he died." She thought about everything Harry had said, about how Cedric had known everything they were learning in the DA. About how he'd died anyway. It was all very confusing, and there was nothing to do but put her hands over her face and weep.
Marietta could have been really mean and said something about how when someone was about to die (however it had happened) probably the last thing on his mind would be to tell random Gryffindors how amazing his girlfriend was even if he had the time. Unfortunately, Cho started crying, and that always triggered Mare's guilt reflex.
"Cho..." There was really nothing to do but go over and put her arms around her best friend, wrong as she was about Harry Potter or not, "He was probably thinking it even if he couldn't say it."
