RP, YAY!
Who: Katie Bell and Marietta Edgecombe (open to sixth years in DADA, too)
Where: DADA class
When: Monday, March 17, 1996 St Patty's Day!
Why: Because Lari wants to RP, really.
DADA is making me edgier and edgier lately. Every time I see Professor Umbridge and she looks at me, I can't help but freeze up a bit inside. What if she knows something? Maybe she does - why else would I keep feeling so bad? We've lasted this long under her nose, but how long can our luck hold out? All it takes is her seeing something, someone leaving the meetings at the wrong time and...
Luck is a funny thing to think about on St Patrick's day.
Anyway, Professor Umbridge has divided us up in twos (I notice I'm not with Cho - how nice of her), in order to summarize a couple paragraphs of the latest chapter in our books to present to the class. I suppose this is her way of making things more interesting for NEWT students...I don't really know. I just know that I don't want to get on her bad side again so I pull out my parchment and quill and look at Katie. "Shall we get on with it, then?"

One word comes to mind with this- actually, no, all of the DADA classes. 'UGH.' Anti theft wards? That's our subject? BOOOORING! I didn't even read the whole chapter. I just stared at it for a while. Because who need to learn about Anti theft wards these days? Harry says that You-know-who is back, and I believe him, so if he really is back, I don't think he'd be out to steal everyone's jewelery. We should be learning on how to protect ourselves! That's why the DA is a good thing! We're learning so much more than what we would with Umbridge. I'm paired up with Marietta. We get along, so I guess it's not bad. At least I'm not paired up with someone I never talk to, or someone I hate, which is no one really. I smile slightly at Marietta and shrug. "I guess, but, I mean really, why do we even have to learn this? Anti theft wards should be left to the rich, I think." |

I've read the chapter like a good little Ravenclaw, so I start making notes on what I remember. "Rich people aren't the only ones that are robbed," I point out. Okay, so it's not the most interesting of lessons and all, but it is the sort of thing we need to learn, "Poor people are just as likely to have things stolen from them because thieves might assume the law enforcement won't look as hard. Besides, what do you think we need to learn?" As I look up at Katie, I can swear I see the flash of something green, but I'm not quite sure. (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread) |

Well I'm a bad little Gryffindor and I choose not the bother with something so stupid. "Well then couldn't they just hide things somewhere safe? Or not bother buying things that they know are going to get stolen. It just seems easier. And I think we need," Katie dropped her voice so only Marietta could hear her, "to learn all that stuff that Harry's teaching us! What good are teachers if they don't teach what we need to learn? I just think that we should learn how to keep ourselves and family safe, before prized possessions." I look down at the paragraph about anti theft wards and I frown. Stupid books. "Oh yes, let's have the poor people not own anything nice. That's really generous of you, Katie," I snap. Okay, maybe I'm a little defensive because my mum and I have never had a lot of nice things. At her tirade I lower my voice, too. "The Ministry gave us this curriculum and they know what's best for us. They would not put us into danger." What is that green thing behind Katie? It's bugging me so I reach for it. "Miss Edgecombe, Miss Bell, is there something you'd like to share with the class?" Jumping back at her voice I stammer out a "N...nothing. Just discussing our notes." "Very good. I expect a tip-top presentation," she said and moved on. ...What? She left that easily. I look down at my hands and see that it's a shamrock. Strange. Very strange. (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread) |

"I didn't mean it like that! I just meant, maybe some people shouldn't get so attached things that really aren't of any importance, when they should be caring about their family and friends! And I know they think that they're doing what's best for us, but-" What does she keep looking at? Now she's grabbing for something. That's fine Marietta, just ignore everything I'm saying. I also jump as Umbridge's annoying voice suddenly pipes up. I nod to what Marietta was saying. Yeah, we weren't talking about how bad you are at teaching, nope. Oooh that was lucky. She just walked away. I notice that Marietta is looking at something in her hands. "What's that?" I ask, also peering at her hands. (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread) |

"It's a shamrock," I say, holding out the tiny leafy green plant to Katie, "I have no idea what it was doing in our classroom." I look back at Professor Umbridge who has completely forgotten about us and then back to the shamrock. She left around the time I picked it up, but it couldn't possibly... "I don't see why we can't care both about our families and still watch out for our material possessions," i muse looking down at the shamrock. (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread) |

"A shamrock? One of those leafy things? That's cool." Hopefully it'll help us with our presentation. We haven't even started. I sigh. Clearly Marietta wont give up and agree with me. "Okay, so you could have a few things that cost, but then you could hide them or something." I don't really remember what we're talking about anymore. I give up. (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread) |

I'm too tired of arguing to point out that if you're robbed, thieves will likely ransack your house or flat and look for hidden stuff. "Yeah...it's strange. You know it's St Patrick's Day." I look down at the shamrock and at my quill and parchment that have hardly any notes on them. "I wonder if that's why it showed up." Oh dear, the first group has been called up to give their presentation and Professor Umbridge doesn't seem too impressed. We'd better write some stuff down. (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread) |

"It is?" i never really got what St Patrick's Day was all about. All I knew was that it was Irish. I notice that Umbridge has already started making people go up for their presentations already. Great, I haven't even written down anything. "Uhh, what are we going to do?" (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread) |

"Hope we have enough that we don't get a 'T'?" I say uncertainly, scanning the paragraphs and writing down a few notes in my round cursive. Amazingly, we're one of the last groups called, though at the rate things are going for me lately, I would have thought we'd be next. And when we do go up, notes in one hand and shamrock clenched in my sweaty fist, and stumble through our presentation, Umbridge actually smiles at us and tells us we did a fine job. "Something is going on," I tell Katie once we're back in our seats, "We weren't that good." (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread) |

Wow, that was really really lucky. I didn't even say anything, I just nodded and let Marietta carry on with it, seeing as she was the only one who had written something. And Umbridge just nodded and smiled and set us on our merry way. All the other students were looking at Umbridge as if she were crazy. Well More crazy then usual. "Maybe that shamrock really is lucky! Hey that's so cool!" (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread) |

"That's amazing! I think..." I bite my lip as I'm about to say that I think I'm going to keep it, but is that really fair to Katie knowing about it? Would that make me seem selfish? Merlin knows I could use some good luck, but maybe she could, too. "Would you like it? I don't know if it really is lucky, but it does seem suspicious..." I'm too nice sometimes. Hmm a little luck would be nice, but what would I need to be lucky about? Getting back at Peeves would be nice, seeing as I still haven't. And my schooling need help... but... I don't think I should take it. "You found it, you take it." Katie smiled and a small voice in her mind shouted "KATIE YOU'RE AN IDIOT!" But I don't care. (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread) |

"Thank you," I tell her, even though she's right - I did find it. And I could use a little luck...if it even brings some. Maybe this will make all those bad feelings go away. |
