Star did miss going to school but since she was now sixteen school was over and she was married instead. She hadn’t really had an opinion one way or another on being married before it happened, actually the fact that she was one of those loud, overactive girls she hadn’t been sure someone would want to marry her even though she’d been considered a pretty girl but Henry had courted her and they’d been married in a small ceremony right after she’d turned sixteen.
Since he was working as an apprentice to the gunsmith and he was working so hard she liked to bring him his lunch every day so everything would be fresh instead of having to sit in his lunch pail all morning. It was a good excuse to come see him and Star was singing and swinging the lunch pail as she walked up to the gunsmith to see Henry.
***
Henry was happy with his life, simple though it was. He had a wife who was a little odd, sure, but sweet and thoughtful. He did his best to be a good husband for her, which included buying her books when he could afford it. That was why he apprenticed to Mr McCree, to provide a stable life for her. The gunsmith was a great teacher and Henry knew he could make an honest living out of it.
He also greatly appreciated that his wife brought him his lunch every day. "My Star," he greeted warmly as she stepped into the shop. It was the same time every day, so he knew it was her. Henry wiped his hands on his apron and moved to her side to give her a kiss against her cheek. "Will you have lunch with me today?" Sometimes he was able to, other times he was not. Today, he could take the few extra minutes.
***
“Oh really? You have time?” She loved that fact that he called her his Star. It was something like having a thing that was just theirs and she liked that. “Of course I’ll have lunch with you.” And she almost gave a little hop of happiness but caught herself and just caught one of his hands to squeeze it with a bright grin.
“Let’s go outside and eat under the trees. We won’t have nice weather forever and there’s plenty to look at out there.” It was always a good day when they were able to eat lunch together and she’d make it up on her chores at home double time when they were done. The dogs liked it when she ran everywhere to get everything done it was like a big game for them.
***
"I do," he replied with a nod, pleased by her excitement. It was one of the things he loved about her and why he'd offered his hand in marriage. Henry knew he would never ask her to be less excited than she was. He took his apron off and set it on the back counter before he joined her once more, taking her hand as they walked outside.
"How are the dogs?" Henry asked as they found a shady spot underneath one of the trees nearby to the shop. He had some time but not a great deal of time, so the closer they stayed the more time he had with her. He loved spending time with his wife, no matter what they were doing. Once they were seated, Henry let her get them set up for their meal. "You're not spoiling them too badly, are you?" Not that he was any better.
***
She was glad they weren’t going far so they could spend as much time as possible together. Star liked spending their time together just as much as Henry did and even though he was eating with her she made sure to give him most of everything she’d brought so he had enough. She could always have more when she got home.
“Oh they’re fine. I only spoil them a little, but they make sure I’m not lonely while you have to work so I think they deserve it.” They really were wonderful to have around. Star would be so lonely without the dogs while he was working. “They take good care of me.”
***
Henry chuckled. "Well, hopefully soon you'll have children to spoil," he replied. He tried not to talk about kids too often because he knew it was only a matter of time before they were blessed with them, as much as she might not look forward to the parts where she would need to be less active. He very much wanted to have at least two, maybe three kids, but once he was able to support them.
Toothless and Stormfly were plenty enough extra mouths to feed right now and their childhood dogs got along splendidly together. It was a sign, he thought, of how well they got along together. "Are you looking forward to the wedding this weekend?" he asked, turning the subject to something slightly more pleasant.
***
Star liked children and looked forward to having them when they did but she was also worried that she would be bad at being a mother. Her own mother might have been very strict in a lot of ways but she’d been good at keeping track of her flighty daughter. Star wasn’t sure she’d be that good at it.
“Oh I am!” Star smiled remembering their own little ceremony, this weekend’s wedding would make her very nostalgic with all the memories. “There will be dancing and they are making treats, it will all be so much fun.”
***
Henry was glad she was excited for the wedding. They hadn't been able to have a big ceremony or party, but he had loved their little ceremony. It had been perfect for them, just like the ceremony on Sunday would be perfect for the couple getting married. The Mitchells were a good family, if a little odd for being such a mixed family. Henry didn't think any less of them for it.
"Shall we spend all night dancing like we did at our wedding?" he asked with a grin. He took a bite of his sandwich afterward and found himself reminiscing about their wedding. It hadn't been that long ago and it was still sometimes hard to believe that they were wed, that he had a family of his own. The daily lunch deliveries went a long way to soothe his worries that she wasn't as happy as she could be.
***
She still looked excited and happy but mentioning the dancing reminded her of all the different types of dancing they’d done that night and added a pretty blush to her neck and cheeks at the same time. “I think we should do that.” She smiled at him and tucked some of the wisps of hair that had worked loose from her braid behind her ears.
“I will wear my good dress and I could put my hair up like you like.” Most of the time she just braided it because it was easier to do the cleaning and the chores that way but she had noticed how he liked it on her.
***
It didn't take a genius to figure out what she was thinking and Henry blushed slightly, still wrapping his head around the fact that he got to curl up with her every night. He wasn't the strongest or tallest or smartest guy around, but he was sweet and kind and he did what he could to improve the lives of the people he loved. That meant he sometimes worked up contraptions to help his wife with her daily chores. They didn't always work the best, but he tried.
"I love when you put your hair up," he replied with a smile. She was everything to him, so he knew that she cared deeply about him when she offered to do things that he knew weren't her favorite. His Star made the prettiest hairstyles, even just her simple braids were gorgeous. "I'm very happy with you," Henry added softly as he put his hand on her's. She needed to know how much he loved her, how happy he was. Sometimes, it wasn't said enough by the people in this town.
***
She was happier that he was sweet and kind than being anything else. He made things to try to help her and even when they didn’t work like they were supposed to they were fun to watch as they self destructed or dumped all the dishwater on the floor. Star hadn’t ever laughed as much as she did with Henry and that meant more to her than being rich or having a pretty face.
Star turned her hand over to put her fingers into his and smiled shyly at him. “I’m very happy with you too.” And she was very glad there had been time for him to eat with her today. It always made the day a little better when they could spend lunch together.
“I know you have to go soon but I will have supper for you when you come home tonight.” And she had her little bit of pin money she was going to see if she could get some lemonade for them to drink with supper as a treat.
***
Henry smiled widely and leaned in to kiss her cheek when she said she was happy, too. That was all he wanted, because some people weren't able to marry for love or happiness. They were lucky that fondness and affection had turned to a kind of love that they could build a life on together. He certainly hadn't wanted to be on his own forever and his Star had brought the kind of warmth and excitement that he wanted in his life.
"I promise to not be late today," he replied as he turned back to his lunch. "It's been busier than usual, but we've been working at a good pace." With that murderer terrorizing the town, a good number of people wanted to arm themselves or have their weapons checked over, so it had led to quite a lot of extra work for all of them. He was learning to be an expert in all of the guns and then absolutely had some at home, but he was waiting for the right moment to bring up the idea of teaching her how to use one.
***
She had a bright smile for the kiss to the cheek and she managed to lean over and put her shoulder against his for a few seconds before straightening up to let him eat the rest of his lunch. Star had seen so many people that only seemed to tolerate or flat out hated being married or the person they were married to so she felt blessed that she and Henry were such a good match for each other.
“Don’t worry, Toothless and Stormfly will keep me company and keep me safe so you don’t need to worry. But I don’t mind that you’ll be on time. It just means more time with the two of us.”
***
He was far more interested in pulling her in close, his concern for her apparent in the gentle way he held her, his hands bringing her forehead against his. "I will always worry about you, my Star," he murmured softly, deadly serious about that. Henry took his role as husband seriously because of the love he felt for her. He let go after a few long moments and smiled at his wife. He didn't want to scare her anymore than he probably already had.
"I'm sorry," Henry said before he cleared his throat. He'd gone and made what was supposed to be a nice lunch something more serious and perhaps a little weird. "You know, I was thinking about a new invention, something to help you with the laundry so you don't have to do all the scrubbing yourself."
***
“Don’t be sorry, I am your Star.” She didn’t care that they were making something of a spectacle of themselves in public. People always tutted about her behavior anyway so she did what she wanted most of the time anyway. Star lifted her hand to caress the side of his face and push his hair away from his eyes gently. It would never stay there but she liked to see his eyes. They were so kind and he always looked at her like she was something rare and precious.
“And we can work on your invention when it’s ready. I think it would be fun to have help with the laundry.”
***
He smiled softly, the sort of smile reserved for just his wife given the level of fondness there, and leaned into her caress briefly. "Forever and always," Henry added as he often did in those quiet moments between them. He was luckier than he had any right to be, but he wasn't going to question it or give her any reason to be unhappy with him.
"If I'm lucky, I'll have something for us to test out in the next few weeks." They were side projects done outside of his work hours and often out their back door, but this one would be coming together soon so she'd take notice of it. "I thought you might appreciate it." Truthfully, she usually appreciated his inventions, even when they didn't work quite right. Henry counted himself lucky that she put up with him.
"Let's hope it goes better than the dish washing helper," Henry added with a chuckle. It'd taken some time to replace the broken dishes.
***
“Well we’ll just try it out on something that isn’t valuable first this time. We did learn our lesson about that!.” She laughed remembering the disaster that had been the dishwasher. Maybe it had been bad but it had also been as funny as anything she’d ever seen. The dishes had made such a ruckus smashing.
“And I like the new dishes better anyway.” The ones they’d gotten as a wedding present had been ugly as far as Star was concerned but it hadn’t been polite to tell people that. Now she had a set she liked.
***
Henry chuckled. "Maybe some of our more worn rags should be the first to test it out," he agreed. He knew it would be best to test out the invention with a reasonably full load of washing but they had plenty of rags and towels and such to test it out with. They would be easier to replace than clothing, especially Star's dresses.
"The old ones were kind of ugly weren't they?" He could say that softly now, knowing the people who'd gifted them were nowhere within earshot. Plus he was kind of hoping she'd laugh. She had the prettiest laugh, just like she had the prettiest smile. Maybe he was biased but that was alright with him. "I'll make sure to set aside some money for new towels in case we need to sacrifice some of our older ones for more rags once this test happens." Better to be safe than out of towels.
***
Well he got what he wanted, the quiet admission made her laugh and put a smile on her face that showed off her dimples even when she stopped laughing.
“That’s probably a good idea. Oh! And we can just buy some rags from the ragman the next time he comes through to use. That will cost less than new towels.” She liked this idea, it would give them materials to work with and wouldn’t cost nearly as much. Her enthusiasm kept the smile on her face but it softened when she looked at Henry. “We make a good team don’t we?”
***
"The best team," he agreed fondly. Henry took her hand and brought it up to his lips to give her a kiss. He grinned as he looked back up at her, kept their hands together once he lowered his hand. Though his lunch was nearly finished and he knew he needed to go back to work, he didn't particularly want to. His Star always cheered him up, always left him with a smile on his face, and that wasn't always easy to walk away from even for just a few more hours.
After another few minutes though, he pulled his hand away. "I should get back to work." Henry started to clean up a bit, wanting to help and prolong their time together a little bit. He was smitten with his wife. "Thank you for having lunch with me today," he added once everything was all cleaned up.
***
Star hated to have to leave him but she couldn’t get in the way of his work. That wouldn’t be good for anything if he didn’t have work so she just treasured the time he took to help her clean and pack everything up.
“Thank you for having lunch with me. I will see you later when you get home.” She leaned in to give him a quick kiss and pulled back out of reach to wave at him before either of them could get distracted by kissing. “Have a good day at work!”
