Though he hasn't been completely solidified just yet (see some ideas below), if Westin was part of the Keystone pack for most of his life, then he's likely been aware of Kit for Kit's entire life (I forgot to mention that he's only a mere 22, still a baby, all things considered). The degree of their relationship pre-FUBAR can be anything from casual to more meaningful.
Kit's not entirely helpless (though he might feel like he is, and other people might think that he is, too), but now that his blood relatives are dead and the extended pack family has gone and blown up to high hell, Kit probably looks to Westin for a sense of security as the Alpha.
Westin might have been the one to inform Kit of the forming of the Wapiti pack, or he could have had someone else do it, that, again, can be determined mutually. I've no preference.
Kit might be non-threatening enough to Westin to fill the role of supportive sounding board, but he'd be horrid at giving advice on pack politics since he was basically told to let his dad/brother handle all that before and just focus on being studious and stuff. Even if Kit doesn't work as that type of person, he'd still obviously want Westin to remain as sturdy as possible because, well, one complete and utter holy hand grenade of Antioch going and blowing everything to smithereens was enough for him.
