Babylon Lost excerpt

There were three loud, heavy thumps that woke him up. He was in a small cell, laying on his back on a hard cot staring up at the roof. Everything around him was gray, concrete gray and the only source of light was the lanterns out in the hallway shining in through the bars in the door. Three more thumps, slowly getting closer. His eyes hurt, felt like he'd been looking into the sun for too long – except he hadn't seen the sun in years, he barely even recalled what it looked like anymore. Three more thumps. It was like they were doing that just to drive him slowly crazy, but then again he was already kind of crazy. Years and years after having been stuck in this place was enough to do that to even the most stable people and he hadn't been that to begin with. But then again he could barely recall what life was like before he'd come here. At times there were strange dreams like distant memories of green grass, a blue sky and someone laughing beside him. Three more thumps, this time against the door to his cell. He could hear the guard outside pause for a second and he raised a hand in a weak attempt of saying good morning. Not many prisoners stayed around for long and neither did many guards. Maybe it was a security issue, keep changing guards, never letting them stay positioned there for longer than three months as it could make them grow empathic towards the prisoners. It was a basically good thought but at times it didn't always work.

The guard started walking again, whistling as he did. Kyle felt himself smiling ever so slightly. It was the really small things that you clung to when you found yourself incarcerated for long periods of time. A guard whistling outside your door, the doctors interactions with each other when they thought he was still out cold. It never stopped to amaze him how normal they seemed to be when they weren't conducting tests and at times he had stayed in his cot and just stared up at the ceiling wonder how so seemingly normal people could do what they did, what they used to justify what they did and how could they ever sleep at night after hours upon hours of pressing him and others like him to the edge and over it.

There was stomping of boots down the hall and a slight squeaking and he felt himself go rigid in the cot. He knew what would come, he wasn't even strong enough to get out of bed and yet they were going to drag him back in there, not again, not now. He barely had the power to get off the cot but managed with an effort. His entire body screeching at him and the pain of standing on his own two feet again was almost enough to force him down onto his knees. Kyle heard the cart squeal to a halt just outside his cell door. 'Not now, not yet, I can't do this again, not yet.'

Just as the door opened he lurched toward it, half tripping over his feet as he charged whoever it was that was first into his room this time. Apparently it was one of the guards but it seemed like Kyle had managed to catch him off guard because his shoulder collided into something that was at least remotely soft and he was still on his feet. The guard went down like a sack of potatoes though, his head thumping as it bounced against the floor and the man was out like a light, things started spiraling out of control rapidly from there on, it seemed chaos was only a fraction away and looking around Kyle noticed that there was only one guard along with the two nurses who turned and ran for all they were worth when he looked at them. The hall was quiet, the soft sound of the nurses shoes echoing down the hall to his right but that was about it. There was nothing else, just him, a guard that was out cold, a cart and halls, long halls covered with doors like his own.

There was a loud ruckus down the hall where the nurses had run towards, shouts and metal slamming accompanied by the heavy pounding of boots. More guards most likely, that meant that he only had one way to go and without much consideration he turned and started off down the hall. It was hard though, his legs were slowly giving out beneath him and it felt like he was dragging himself along in invisible jello or something. The further along the hall he came, the harder it was to move and the stomping of boots behind him just grew louder and louder. He could see the corridor up ahead, there was a cross section and a door was opened just beyond it. Maybe he could hide in there for now at least, relief flooded over him, maybe, just maybe he'd make it. Pushing himself further his foot slipped on nothing at all, making him stumble. Kyle felt his knees hitting the ground just as someone shouted behind him but before he had a chance to do anything else pain shot through his body and everything went black.
