Mod Post: Celebrating Snape, Snupin_Santa notes, Trading Places!

Happy New Year! I hope you're all having a fabulous 2008 so far! We start our year off with a quickie challenge:

Celebrate Snape!

That's right, our beloved Potions master turns 48 this year, and in his honor, we're having a free-for-all on his birthday, January 9! So, prepare your tributes for posting on the 9th. Anything goes - drabbles, fic, art, sketches, themed lists, reviews, essays, photomanips, colourbars, discussion - if you can think of it, post it! And if you happen to pair Snape with a certain younger werewolf, all the better!

If you have any questions or needs, feel free to ask, but Celebrating Snape should come naturally to us. See you on the 9th!

In other news, the [info]snupin_santa reveal is in a couple days, but until then, there's icons here for the participants. Check them out! And until the reveal, you can try your hand at the Guessing Polls.

And finally, if you spend the month catching up with the exchange, don't forget to leave a note for the participants. Feedback definitely dropped off after the first week, but it's never too late to let a creator know you viewed her work.

Remember when I talked about finding your three fics or pieces of art you'd like art/stories for? My next posts (later today) are going to be sign-up posts for our Trading Places challenge!

Artists are always hoping they will inspire someone to write fic based on their art, and writers are hoping an artist will be inspired to draw something their stories, so we're making a challenge out of it. Choose your three pieces of art or three stories for which you'd like to receive embellishment. There will be a separate sign-up post for art and a post for stories.

I ask that there be no extra "chatter" on the sign-up posts, because that's where claiming will eventually happen. If you want to discuss anything, feel free to come back here and post a link to the sign-up reply you're discussing.

You can choose any three Snape/Lupin pieces you wish of any length or type, but you may only offer one threesome in the three pieces you sign up with. Sign-ups will be open until next Friday, January 11. At midnight EST on January 12, claiming may begin, there's no need to wait for me to open it up. Writers will be asked to write a minimum of 500 words for one art piece if they sign-up with stories, but artists may do sketch-quality work and claim two pieces at a time. This is because we have many more artists than writers here.

If you sign up by offering links to your work, you will be expected to return the favour by then making a claim to create. I think 500 words (5 drabbles!) and at least one sketch or drawable should be easy enough for many to try. You don't have to offer links (sign-up) to make claims, but if I find we don't have many art links or story links, I will come begging. Don't make me beg, ok, because then I'll have to break out the blinky eyes. *g*

If any of this is clear as mud, please ask your questions here, that's part of the reason I'm delaying putting up the sign-up posts until later today. If you spot a big flaw in this plan, or have questions, please, let me know!

Posts are up! Sign-ups for Art || Sign-ups for Fiction

That's all for now. Thanks to all the members for making this a super community! I'll be back later today with sign-up posts, and later this week with a new non-secret project and, hopefully, the State of the Snupin! OOO la la! ~_^

The Trading Places challenge sounds like great fun! There's definitely art out there that I'd love to write for. However, since the sign up starts later today (Jan 4) and the Snupin Santa Reveal isn't until Jan 5, what if we want to include our Snusa fics/art in the sign up? Do we just wait to sign up til after the Reveal, or put in a place holder for the Snusa piece stating we'll add the link after the Reveal is up?

Also, you mentioned a 500 word minimum, but that doesn't mean the fic has to be short, does it? Because there's some wonderful art out there that might inspire a longer story. (And some of us are just pants at keeping anything under 5K-10K.)

As it mentions in the post, sign-ups will be open until January 11, so I'm pretty sure lore's answer here would be that if you want to include a Snupin Santa piece, all you need to do is wait until after the reveal goes up on the 5th to sign up for Trading Places. You won't miss anything by waiting an extra day because sign-ups will last for a week.

Also, knowing lore as I do, I feel safe in predicting her answer re: length would be something along the lines of, "Gawd, NO, it doesn't have to be short! Long fic... *drool*." The minimum is there probably to make sure no one claims a dozen art prompts and writes a single drabble for each, but she didn't set a maximum length.

Um, yeah, pretty much everything McKay said! *laugh*

And let me reiterate: Long fics? *DROOL*

I am going to up the claim limit to three apiece, but if you want to just claim one and write an epic, well! Yummm.

But that's a personal preference. I love shorter fics, too, it's just that the long ones are more rare, so I end up going all wet at them. ;)

Hi lore,

I've just noticed this sentence from the above:

This is because we have many more artists than writers here.

Is this really true? I'm sure you're in a far better position to judge than I, but I could have sworn it was the other way around...

HUUMMM. That's a good question. Traditionally, most communities have WAY more writers than artists, but things might be a little closer here.

Anyway, over the course of the day, I've began to rethink the limits, so it will be a moot point. I guess we'll find out the ratio during the sign-ups! I do know we have an unusually high number of writer-artists here....

*HUGS* Thanks for asking!

Will there be a time limit on the Trading Places challenge?..

I tend to get rather panicky with time limits.. which is why I didn't take part in the Snupin Santa.. I was terrified I'd end up having to pull out.. but a 500 word or so drabble I could probably do.

Community challenges are run pretty loose, normally. In this case, if you put in stories, you should at least come up with one story based on art in return by the deadline, which is going to be sometime in mid-February. So, that's a month+ to write 500 words.

And if you don't...well, I actually might poke at people for this, but if you never come through, it's not like I call you out or throw you out of the community or anything. But I might keep poking at you, oh-so-gently, in email. This is literally the most accountable I've ever held people to a community challenge.

I think you can do it, too! It was good and responsible of you to avoid Snupin Santa if deadline pressure is too much for you, but I hope 500 words (5 drabbles!) won't cow you for this challenge. *g*

I'm so excited! I've always been really bad at writing for prompts and at writing anything less than novel-length (over a period of several weeks or even months), which is why I didn't sign up for Snupin Santa. But recently I've written a couple of short fics off some plot bunnies that originated at Snapedom, so I feel like I'm ready for this challenge now.

I have to think about which 3 fics to offer up, and I'm eager to see what art is available to write for.

And I already have birthday fic written and ready to post! (It was actually written for Snapedom, which is also planning to celebrate our favorite Potions Master's birthday.)

Okay, question...I'll be in transit on January 12th. Literally. I leave for the airport at 1:30 on the 11th and won't land in Florence until 2:00 the next day. I'm not sure I'll be conscious, let alone able to choose a piece of art to write about.

Will there will be stuff left on the 13th? Or may I nominate a proxy to claim a fic? Help?

I think there will be stuff left, but if you want, you can leave proxy claims based on what's already up by the time you leave. I can make the claims or someone else for you. Then you can look it over on the 13th and make sure you have what you want.

Okay, I'm thick -- if a fic is primarily R/NC-17, should the Trading Places request be done at bymoonlight or here?

On the fic post here. I've already found that we're going to have SOME linking to NC17 and R material for various challenges, discussions, and things like Snupin_Santa. But links aren't the fics or art itself, so we're going with it! *g*

Now, the resulting fic or art from the challenge, THAT can go in [info]bymoonlight when the time comes, if it's rated R or NC17. For right now, you're good! Go sign up! ^_^

Hey Lore darlin',
Would it be okay for me to do art for a fic, even if I don't have any art to post for claiming? (I'd do my fic too, of course. :)) I've been in the mood to paint or draw...

Hello lore - a quick question about this challenge: I have a couple of art pieces that were originally made as illustrations for other people's fics (not commissions). Would these be eligible for this challenge, in the hope that someone other than the original author will use them to write a thoroughly different story, or do you think it would be best to steer clear of that situation?

Well, I think there's a couple issues beyond upsetting who you drew for in the first place:

1. Plagiarism issues - what if your art inspires a similar scene or story?

2. People might not like being offered art that was already attached to a story - they might not bother choosing it.

I won't disallow it, because, really, I'd never know if an art was attached to another story unless I'd read the story and seen it in the first place. But I don't suggest it, either.

You have plenty of fics! Remember, you don't *have* to put in three on anything. One or two is fine, too!

Hey, lore? I forgot to put ratings on my post in the fiction area, like a goob. I haven't figured out how to edit a post yet, cuz, again, GOOB. I need to make the first two NC-17 at the most and the other R, I suppose.

Hi Lore, I've got a question on claiming.

Once all the writers have made their claims, if there is unclaimed art, might we be allowed to put in a request to claim another piece?

(This is like staring at the dessert table at a high-class buffet. Kind of hellish when you can only take one.)

Hello lore!
I see that all art posts have been claimed, but there are still many fic posts to be claimed. I have only submitted in the fic category, so would it be acceptable for me to claim a fic and draw instead of claiming a pic to write, as was my original intention?
Heck, I'm happy to write for a claimed pic, or even submit a late pic of my own. I just wanna Snupin!!!

I'm trying to figure that out, now, but heck yeah, you can claim a fic to to draw for. You don't have to be signed up in the art category to claim stories to make art for. And if you spot an art piece you'd like to write for as well, feel free. :)

Hello mods,
I was wondering what the appropriate etiquette is regarding the fiction written to accompany an art piece once gifted. After posting in lupin_snape, is the writer free to post elsewhere later? And if the story is rated NC-17, should it be posted in by_moonlight rather than at lupin_snape?
Thanks.

Yes, absolutely, you are allowed to post your creation anywhere else after it appears on [info]lupin_snape or [info]bymoonlight. You should post your piece to [info]bymoonlight if it is rated R or NC17. Wherever you post your fiction for this challenge, it would be a good idea to include a link to the inspiring art and say that it was written for the [info]lupin_snape Trading Places Challenge.

Thank YOU!

Hello lore,
I have another of my trademark divvy questions for you. I've drawn a pic for skree's "Angel in the Centrefold" which is rated PG.
However, the fic (and pic) contains a stiffy (or should I be formal and say 'erect penis'?) so... can it still be a PG? (bear in mind this is me drawing, so it might not be very anatomically accurate. Hee!)
Or should it be a different rating?
Sorry for all divviness.

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]lore

I'd say a drawing of a hard penis is at least an R. Better to err on the side of a higher rating than low-ball it and open it up to under-age people. I'd post it at [info]bymoonlight.

Thanks for asking, it's NOT a problem! *HUGS*
