Personal Note: On Ship Contests

In case there are any questions, I wanted to make it clear that this community is not affiliated with the proposed "contest" between Snupin and Snarry.

On a personal note, I don't approve of such a contest and I would never participate in one myself. I think such contests and competitions would generate a lot of bad blood and wank where there was none before.

In general, Snupin shippers have always respected the other ships and have not participated in ship wars. I'd hate to see something like the proposed contest cause hard feelings around the ships.

I actually haven't heard about this, but thank you saying something.

I really couldn't agree more - this has trouble written all over it. Easily spiraling into a 'who's wand is the biggest' type contest (DH channeling? No... never...) between the ships, and ultimately turning into fandom_wank's wet dream after the claws come out.

Heh, after lurking at fandom_wank just tonight it's easy to say that there has been far less than a 'real' contest to provoke some ridiculous fan-wrath.

I was not aware of this proposed "contest", but would have to agree it would be best not to participate. Aside from igniting too much competitive emotion and aggression, I have to say just not something I would be interested in.
Thanks for passing on the information though, and for making it clear that this community is not involved!

Thanks for this lore...being the utter competitive fool that I am (see: me at Trivia Night for an example), my first instinct was to say, "Well, we'd all better go sign up and win!! Snupin, represent!" but you are so right. Why fight over something that is not at issue, and just create bad feelings? This is why you are the wise mod, and I need to go to bed.

Plus, thank god! No need to go sign up for something else. ;)

Well, I'm speaking here as Me, not the Mod, other than the first little bit about not being affiliated. If people want to participate in that sort of thing, they certainly can...I just think it would be like opening Pandora's box.

And don't worry, I do that all the time - think something is a good idea and only realise later that it only looks like a good idea on the surface. Actually, it's the tragic story of my life. ~_^

I'm just relieved I was able to recognize the potential for problems early on for a change. *HUGS*

Plus, there are cool things to sign up for right here, which you will find out more about tomorrow. Heh.

I had the same reaction you did. I didn't think of the wank factor at all. I just always assume people are going to be good-natured and adult about things. Sigh.

Am afraid it's still there *deep sigh*
I'm all for more fic, especially for those pairings, but really, this might not be the best way going about it.

I haven't seen this proposed contest, and I hope it doesn't come to anything, because I don't think it's a good idea either. I mean, what's the point? I don't feel like I or other RL/SS shippers or the RL/SS ship in general have anything to prove against snarry or any other ship. It sounds to me like someone is just trying to stir up trouble, and we're better off out of it.

I don't think they are, actually. Their journal userinfo lists Snupin as their favourite ship, with Snarry a close second.

Probably just thought it would be a bit of fun to have ship teams instead of Snarry's Angst vs Romance etc, so that there's a whole slew of stuff guaranteed to appeal to people who like both pairings. The Snarry Games always makes me want some of the other ships (etc) to have something similar. Competition is fun, and can spur people on to do some really good work.

Problem I have is that I'm really fond of both Snupin *and* Snarry, and would have a hell of a time trying to choose a team to sign up to :D.

I haven't seen the journal/community/whatever-it-is in question, so I have no idea what their motives are; if they aren't trying to stir up trouble, that's one good thing at least, and I'd have to adjust my opinion to think they're just really new to fandom or naive about how fandom generally works. (Yes, I'm jaded and cynical. LOL)

I've seen enough rumblings of discontentment re: the Snarry Games to know anything that promotes division rather than unity, even within a ship, can go sour really easily. We've already had some issues with dark fic vs. not-dark fic (for lack of a better term because I refuse to use "fluff") in the RL/SS ship, so having an angst vs. romance competition would be just asking for trouble, IMO.

They seem pretty new, yeah. I'm not sure it was terribly well thought-through... and it's that, more than any potential grumbling, that's making me less and less likely to have anything to do with it.

Heh. I'm always really surprised when a wank-storm happens - half the time I have no idea why it's something that's even worth arguing about. But yeah, you're right. Fandom has a tendency to explode fairly easily :).

Sleeping dragons and all that ;).

I have never made it a secret I ship another Remus/ pairing, as well.

However...

I think no good can come of a pairing contest. It screams shipping wars and fandom wank.

One of the reasons I drifted back into Snupin was because of shipper wars. (rl/sb vs rl/nt) Sure, I avoid fics with Sirius and or Marauder bashing. Still, it's a nicer place in Snupin.

Oh, urf. I hadn't heard about that, but yeah, maybe not the most productive use of fandom time. Especially with two Snape ships, and two that often have strong feelings about stuff. Urg.

There's a Snupin vs Snarry contest out there?

Um...why?

*shakes head* I'm glad you posted about this. I can't imagine why people feel the need to be so competetive over fandom, which really ought to be a place where everyone wins.

lol, I saw this on the new communities list when the comm was first created and automatically went to add to my watch list to see what happened with it, on the off chance of simply missing some snupin that got posted on a smaller comm. In general, though, I agree. I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with the idea, so long as everyone was mature and just having a good time... but people take their ships so seriously, it's probably best not to get into.

That, and while initial reservations were relatively minor, the mod responses to the entry posted today are only making me grow more dubious. :/

Honestly? I think it is only a slight if people take it as such. It's only wanky if people make it as such.

It's not about respect v. disrespect. It's about having fun. If people think it's gonna create bad blood, it will. If people think it will be fun, it will be.

People mistakenly think the [info]snarry_games is about division, but they're wrong. All of the participants have said that everyone wins because everyone gets to enjoy the art and fic created. It's also about teamwork and unity and people working together to help each other make the best submissions possible.

The same here. Instead of posting something that warns of potential wank, which is usually the precursor to wank as I've seen so many times, you could join it and create for your ship and have a good time.

that was really well said. everything you just said, i agree with completely.
i think if people go into with an idea that it's all in good fun, then no one should get upset over the outcome. it's like playing a game, someone has to lose, but the whole point is to participate and do your best. the fun is in the good product that comes from hard work with competition as an incentive.

:) Thanks. I'm a huge sportsfan. So, I come from the mentality that competition is fun. The better the opponent, the better the game. You know? And competition isn't always negative. Competition is the driving force behind everything. It makes you do better. Work harder. I never saw anything wrong with it at all.

OTOH, there's a difference between competition between two views of one ship, and setting one ship against another. I see the potential for a great deal of trouble here, especially since I questioned the moderator and found that she literally does not know about ship wars, fandom wank, or any other potential problems. Also, didn't the mod of the Snarry Games ask that her permission be granted before any such copycat fests were declared? This doesn't seem to have been done, which opens up the potential for even more problems.

I can't participate regardless because of RL commitments, but I see no reason for such a competition. If it gets off the ground, I hope it goes well, but I can't see this ending well.

Actually, I AM a [info]snarry_games mod, and they did ask for permission. And since we at [info]snarry_games only see these events as potential for fun and great fanworks, we okay'd it. [info]triatharon didn't have any wank and that pit het versus gen versus slash. It's all in your perspective. If you keep on saying "there may be wank" people that like to stir shit up will do it. If you say, we'll have fun, people that like to have fun will do it.

's all right. We haven't pimped it yet.

Wank is one of those things that only exist when people desire wank to be around. It's a choice. It's a complete and total choice.

I'm wary of posts like these because it really only draws attention to it. It's not like the person doing it was trying to cause a storm. And even if they were, the storm is up to people involved. If people go in with the intent to participate and enjoy things, that is what will happen. If people look for things to be offended by, by golly they will find it. It's easy to get offended when you are looking for things to take offense to.

However, in this situation, if people take the attitude that it's a light-hearted competition with a goal of having people work together to bring loads of great fanworks for two ships, then that is what you will have. In the end, these things are here to showcase different writers and artists and their works. It's not about a ship being better than the other, and I thought that was pretty clear. I'm disappointed that it's not.

It's not about a ship being better than the other, and I thought that was pretty clear.

The only listed moderator is someone who has put down another person's ship in an exchange community (an altercation on a post now deleted by her, or I'd point to it), as well as having already stated that she hopes Snupin will win in the community. This is not the sort of person I trust to run a fun, light-hearted competition between ships.

I appreciate you coming to the community to offer a different perspective on a possible ship competition, but I think it's a bit naive to assume that this particular competition isn't about pitting the ships against one another when the organizer has such strong ship preferences. If more neutral people were organizing such an event, I'm sure many people would have a great time.
