Title: Will You Be My Valentine?
Paring: Remus/Severus
Word Count: 734
Rating: PG-13
Challenge: Letters
Warning: Unbeta’d
Remus pulled a small bundle of letters from the bottom drawer of his desk. They were held together with a red ribbon; a hair ribbon that had been Lily’s. She’d given it to him in jest saying it went better with his hair than hers. He kept it simply because she had given it to him. The oldest letters had begun to yellow. He pulled the tail of the bow and released them. They were responses to his Valentine letters to Severus. The missives had always been one question, the same question ‘Will you be my Valentine?”. The answers were more of a variation on a theme.

Lupin,
Don’t be daft! You are a Gryffindor!
SS
Remus turned it over and unfolded the next.
February 14, 1977
Lupin Wolf,
Don’t be daft! You are a werewolf!
SS
Remus smoothed the creases back into place.
February 14, 1978
Lupin,
In case it has escaped your notice you remain a Gryffindor and a werewolf.
SS
A small smile curved Remus lips. He opened the next.
February 14, 1979
Lupin,
Please desist! I am not bent!
SS
Severus in denial, it was a classic. Remus sighed and continued.
February 14, 1980
Lupin,
Must this inane correspondence continue? Do not answer that!
SS
Remus took his time as he folded this one and went on to the next.
February 14, 1981
Lupin,
We need to talk. Meet me at Lee Ho Fook's. Yes, that Lee Ho Fook’s. You are buying!
SS
The news had not been good, but the results that evening had been stunning.

Lupin,
A one off does not a Valentine make. If you wish to discuss your missive or if you have another agenda, I will be at the Purple Dragon in Abergavenny at eight this evening.
SS
There were no letters for eight years. The first seven he’d spent with Severus. He had been summarily dumped in ’89. At the time he thought Severus had grown tired of their relationship. As it turned out, signs of the Voldemort’s return had begun to surface and Severus was distancing himself to protect Remus.

Lupin,
I know what you are really asking. We will watch over him.
SS
The impressive green wax seal of the head of Slytherin House adorned the back; he had not broken it when he had originally opened it.
February 14, 1991
Lupin,
I believe you know the answer. Also, he is still safe.
SS
Safe from the devil incarnate, a giant chessboard and the Philosopher’s Stone. Harry had quite a first year. Remus ran his thumb over the wax on the back of the note. This seal he’d saved as well, it had a bit of black and silver swirled in it. It was completely Severus. The next letter was the last one until after the end of the war.

Lupin,
This is WAR there are no Valentines. It may be of interest to you that Potter the Younger is a Parselmouth.
SS
With the last letter folded Remus tied them back up and returned them to their place in the desk. A tiny box held what he considered the last letter of their courtship. He’d written a letter eight months after the wars’ end. Instead of his usual question to Severus he asked another one, this one ‘Will you marry me?’ Severus’ response still made his giddy.

Lupin,
I believe you have finally asked a question I am willing to answer. You will have to appear in person, however, for my response. Eight o’clock at Turtledove Reach (bloody stupid name). DO NOT BE LATE!
SS
“Lupin, you take longer than a woman to get ready!” Severus called from the lounge.
Remus smiled. Severus’ response to his proposal had been a threatening ‘yes’. They’d made love until they were exhausted and in the morning Remus had tried to drag them to the nearest magistrate to get married.
“Lupin, we have reservations! I have other plans for this evening as well.”
Severus had quashed that idea in short order and demanded a wedding with all the trimmings and an extended honeymoon.
“If you are in there much longer it will be our next anniversary. Severus grumbled loudly.
“Coming, love.” Remus replied as he slipped his letter back into its’ case and back into the desk for safe keeping.
