Chocolate and Asphodel feedback post

The Snupin zine, Chocolate and Asphodel, had many contributors, all of who have e-mail addresses listed in their bios. However, if the lure of one-click feedbacking is appealing to you, please feel free to use this post to leave comments for any contributor to Chocolate and Asphodel.

While contributors are free to repost their work starting December 15, please don't hesitate to comment here if you think you might forget to go back and leave a comment on any zine material you see posted. These authors and artists worked very hard and waited a long time. They want to hear from you! Comment on one piece or many, come back and post here several times - whatever works for you. Thank you!

Wow, first feedback!

I couldn't resist waiting until I'm able to print it all out in glorious colour and started reading. Only a little bit, but I had to tell you how much I've enjoyed it so far!

First of all - what a fabulous gift to the Snupin community! Thank you all so much for all the hard work that's gone into this. It looks wonderful and I can't wait to print it!

I've read Ellid's Two Secrets and a Wedding and enjoyed it hugely. Ellid, I love your mpreg. There's such tenderness in your writing. You never fail to make me believe that they can be happy together. This fic lives up to that high standard. I really loved the resolution (no spoilers!) and the characters throughout were super. Great fic!

I also read Mechaieh's On The Same Damn Side. God, talk about tear my heart out! It's not often one sees Tonks like this in a Snupin fic, and it was fabulous. I spent the last 3000 words smiling through my tears. It's that sense of hope for the future that you bring.

I've not looked at the art yet except for Kirasu's cover, and it's so lovely. Totally absorbed in one another! Beautiful.

I'll keep coming back and commenting as I read and enjoy this fabulous zine. Now I just have to resist a little longer!

Thank you! And I agree about Mechaeieh's story - lovely, and it was nice to see Tonks as strong, competent, and *truly* loving.

If you want heartbreaking, check out Busaikko's story. And for hilarious, the first one by McKay left me giggling (especially over what he names his pet :D ).

I'm so pleased you enjoyed OTSDS - once the woman started throwing shoes in her corner of my brain, the story demanded to be written. :-)

Okay, I have no willpower. Cannot resist the call of the Snupin. I've just finished reading [info]busaikko's Here, where the world is quiet. I was so hopeful and the ending hit me like a train. Such amazing writing, such fabulous characterisation. *goes to reread and cry some more*

Thank you so much for letting me know you enjoyed "On the Same Damn Side" - that story gave me heaps of trouble, so I'm utterly thrilled that you were so affected by it. :-)

"Chocolate and Asphodel" is wonderful, is fantastic, is such a brilliant surprise! I haven't completed it yet - I finally managed to slow myself down a little to savour the last story, innerslytherin's "In such a Sovereign Way", having greedily gulped the rest down.
The illustrations are marvelous! Busaikko's "Here, where the world is quiet" had me gasping & sobbing & bawling my eyes out, so it was a welcome relief to smile at McKay's "Things to do with the rest of your life....". Mechaieh's "D'accord D'accord" demanded I slow down a little in order to fully appreciate the writing, which I did! I began to race through again (too quickly, too damm impatient, too GREEDY) so the different format of McKay & Arionrhod's "Breathings of the Heart" was an enjoyable change of tempo - I love stories where the characters are revealed through their own writing in letters! And then on to "In such a sovereign Way" where I've forced myself to slow down & not gulp it down too quickly, although the writing is so smooth it's effortless to simply INHALE the words.
All in all - I'm so grateful, I'm so happy - I love the Fanzine!

Thank you, all the contributors & editors & wonderful people who have generously provided me with such a gift!

Feedback, part 1 - SPOILERS FOR ZINE FICS
[info]mnemosyne_1

[info]karasu_hime - The cover is so gorgeous! I love Severus' hair especially, and the patches on Remus' jeans. And the detail of the bags dropped under the bench! Lovely… also, you've done an amazing job putting the zine together – I know it was so much work, and you should be so proud of yourself! It's incredible. And Budding Romace is so adorable… I love Severus' coat!

[info]xterm - It's probably a weird thing to say, but I love how big the sky is. It really overpowers Remus and Severus, and emphasizes the way they cling to each other, as if to hide within each others' arms. Also that they are tucked behind the stone fence, ducking down and holding onto each other. Wonderful!

[info]firefly_quill - Hee! Such a fun piece! My favorite part was when Severus started faking Remus out with his eyes, and the end where he completely played on Remus' emotions (and then felt guilty)… *g* Love these lines…

“I, too, have a talent for ensnaring,” he announced.

Remus smiled at him again. “Yes,” he replied, equally as
softly as before. “You do.”

[info]isildurs_babe - Mmm, definitely up to no good! (While they obviously get down to no clothes ;) – Love the detail of Severus pointing his wand at the door… had experience of intruders before, perhaps?

[info]busaikko - How can I love you when you break my heart so badly? *weeps* Oh, I so did not expect the ending, but it was heart-breaking and perfect at the same time. Oh, Liam… and farfar… and Remus. The last line… just amazing and perfect.

McKay – I love this plot, with Severus deciding "what the hell" is the answer to everything, including Remus. *g* I love how he gets the flat ready for Remus and buys a dog, just in case. Favorite lines:

and throw pillows for wherever it was that throw pillows
went. He assumed the sofa, but he put one in a chair too,
just to be on the safe side.

And the dog's name is hilarious and so very Severus! I really like how Severus becomes resigned to Remus having made the safe choice, and at least he has Roach and will be content, even if things would have been better together.

[info]_hill - Mmm, I really like the comfortableness of the scene, and all the detail in it. Crookshanks on Remus' lap, the bookcase full of books, the view out the window, the peacock feathers in the vase… (and Sirius on the rug? ;)

I love the way Hill draws animals, all fat and fluffy and completely *right*. That is precisely how a large, contented tiger cat sits, down to the curled tail.

Feedback, part 2 - SPOILERS FOR ZINE FICS

[info]bronze_ribbons - *flail* Wow. I'm really having trouble coming up with enough words to say how much I love this fic. You do such an amazing job of building the world and Severus' life after the end of the war, and the meeting with Remus and the slow build of realizing that Remus is still active in resistance. Gooch was a fantastic character, and the way Remus allowed Diana/Tonks to take her anger out on him was so very like him… Love the ending – I always seem to really like endings that end as something is beginning, as it is here. :)

[info]moonycakes - Too cute! Poor Severus looks all grumpy at having his storming-away interrupted. – and I love the candles on the diagonal, hovering in the air.

[info]ellid - I love that Remus knew all along!! *cough* Okay, now I've gotten that out of my system. Severus' dad popping onto the scene was great, and the wedding was very sweet. I liked Enid and Toby very much, and loved how Enid came after Severus with the potion. :) Poor Severus and the nausea… but my favorite is the ending. I love when Severus is trying to be sneaky and Remus knows, but goes along to make Severus happy. *g*

[info]stasia - Such a fascinating plot… the magic you've created is really interesting, both the curse and the bond. I liked Harry and Severus working together to save Remus, and how Severus figured out how Remus had survived so long… and the ending was wonderful, and full of so much hope and love for their future.

[info]neodandiesrule - Lovely… the swirl of the robes, and the way Severus' face is turned to Remus…

[info]bronze_ribbons - Oh, Tonks. So happy that she went out taking all of them with her, and all the transfigurations of the frilly things was great… Favorite lines:

Aloud, she said to Snape, “Over my dead body.”

Snape sneered at that. “Is there a live one that’s escaped our notice?”

I do adore Severus. *cracks up* I do like Tonks, especially when she's written as well as this, and that she had to resolve things with Remus and Severus before moving on was just right. The ending was perfectly bittersweet.

[info]karasu_hime - HEE!!! WIB! So awesome.

[info]ebonyserpent - *laughs* They both look so content! So sweet…

[info]arionrhod and McKay – Just… fantastic. You two are so good at writing together, and I love the format of the letters and how they reveal the story. And with the last set, I can just picture them sitting or lying together, taking turns writing on a piece of paper… :) Your writing always leaves me feeling content and happy.

Tagay - [info]osmalic, [info]zhynchan, and Sin – Fantastic art all around, but I have to say your Remus is so amazingly perfect. His face is so expressive, his stubble is sexy, and his movements… mmmm. I love the image of him on page 120 with that so-hopeful expression. The ending is heartbreaking and perfect, with Severus' ornament breaking/burning…

[info]xterm - Definitely a perfect back cover, the yin and yang of Severus and Remus… so different, yet so similar and together, they are perfect.

Thanks! I'm glad you liked Enid - I'm considering using her at some point in other things, Just Because. I've also had the idea of Tobias/Toby getting religion/getting sober/getting a clue and showing up all repentant for a while.

Oh, Syne - what generous reviews. *hugs you hard*

I've been both surprised and gratified by how much readers like Gooch. [info]busaikko read an early draft that ended before the first night of the French class and said something like, "Is it wrong that I now want Snape/Gooch?" Me: "You want slash? I'll give you slash!" Busaikko: "You... you...."

Although I'm more girlie than not in real life, letting Tonks trash the boutique was a vicarious thrill for me. *shares your fondness for Severus - he's so much fun when he cooperates (with me, that is - and, ok, sometimes even when he doesn't *g*)* Thank you so much for letting me know you enjoyed these!

Feedback, Innerslytherin gets her own part - SPOILERS!
[info]mnemosyne_1
2007-11-28 04:08 pm UTC (link)
[info]innerslytherin - Okay, wow. You've done an amazing job of portraying their relationship over a number of years – I always like to read missing scenes or between times, and you have so much … life in there… happiness and sadness, content and discontent, togetherness and separation. Remus as Dumbledore's assassin was fascinating and rough, as well as the intimation that Dumbledore purposely tried to drive Severus toward the Death Eaters, knowing that he'd return. The dynamic between Voldemort and Severus was so well done, with V actually enjoying Severus' hatred of him.

I also loved how you worked in and around canon details, and got so involved in the story that I forgot that you wrote it before DH came out. I was cringing and waiting for Remus' sudden marriage, and had the craziest sense of relief when it hit me that it diverged from canon after HBP. Whew!

Once again, I sincerely dislike Dumbledore and his blatant manipulation of everyone… and I wanted to shake Remus when he was ignoring Severus in favor of his father. At first I didn't like Moody too much, but by the end, when I realized that he'd covered for Remus and Severus, I liked him very much. :) And the ending was great, with both of them determined not to live in secrets anymore, and to be together, no matter what.
