Title: Glorious breath
Rating: PG-13
Word count: 509
Notes/warnings: Oh how I suck at titles.
Glorious breath
Severus was on his knees, frantically clawing at the ground beneath him. He'd left it as late as he dared, not arriving at the graveyard until the sun had almost set, as a precaution against being discovered and ruining everything. Now, he was wondering if maybe he hadn't left it a bit too late, as he struggled to push the earth away. Another part of him was wondering if this wasn't just a crazy idea, and had no hope in hell of even working anyway.
No, no, it has to work, it has to, you're not getting away from me that easily, wolf!
He'd read every book he could possibly find on the subject, every piece of empirical research he could get his hands on, spent hours in his study making endless arithmantic calculations that he'd repeated over and over.
Stop worrying! I took account of all possible variables, I know I am right about this!
And now here he was, in front of Remus' grave, on the night of the first full moon since... he shuddered. No. He would not think about it. But... to survive Nagini's attack, by dint of his own personal anti-venin and healing potions, only to discover that his love, his Remus, was dead from a curse taken in battle! After all the preparations he had made to ensure his own survival! It was not to be borne. And now here he was, desperately trying to get rid of all this damn earth, to clear a pathway to Remus' coffin, ready for him to take his first, glorious breath in weeks...
There it is! Now I just have to wait for the moon to do its work...
Moonrise came, and Severus knelt there, staring at the coffin as though he could cause Remus to awake by the sheer force of his will alone. He glanced nervously up at the moon. The full moon. It was just peeking though the clouds, casting a dim glow on the cemetery and its occupants. Minutes passed, and Severus was beginning to silently curse himself for being so foolish as to believe... but suddenly, the sound of a muffled thump cut through his thoughts. The thumping continued, and got louder and Severus wanted to berate himself for not opening the lid of the coffin earlier, but all he could really think was -
It worked! He's alive! Remus is alive!
He wrenched open the coffin, and Lupin sprang forth from it, coughing and spluttering, but very much alive, and -
"Great Merlin, Severus, what the bloody hell just happened!"
"I believe... we have just proven exactly how powerful the moon may be with regards to lycanthropes such as yourself."
And then suddenly, Severus found himself with an armful of extremely happy and grateful werewolf, who was, it seemed, trying to kiss him everywhere possible. The earth was damp and he could feel it soaking into his robes, but considering what had just happened and whom he was with... he really couldn't bring himself to care very much at all.
