I'll see you on the dark side of the moon - second part

Who: Rodney, Teyla, Ronon, Sheppard, Beckett, Weir NPC, and Zelenka NPC
What: Exploring
Where: One of the formerly flooded sections of Atlantis
When: November 12th, 1030 Atlantis Standard Time
Rating: TBA
Status: Incomplete

With no offworld missions scheduled for that day, at least for him any way, John Sheppard decided to take the opportunity to further explore some of the formerly flooded sections of the city. Atlantis was huge and while they'd explored a good bit of it, there where still areas that were still hither too undiscovered.

For this little foray, John had decided to round up his former teammates. While his new team was fine, they were mainly put together for offworld experience and John just naturally missed his friends. Therefore, this expedition afforded the perfect opportunity for them to hang out while actually doing something useful. Hey, it made just as good of an excuse as any, and Elizabeth had given the go ahead.

Currently, John had paired off with Teyla while Ronon was keeping an eye on McKay as the scientist poked around in yet another Ancient lab. He was shining the torch of his P-90 around inside a large room, checking it out.

"I don't know," he was saying to Teyla. "This could work. Put a ramp over there, a half pipe in the center... It has possibilities. Though something'll have to be done about the mildew smell," he said in wrinkling his nose and reached up to tap his comm unit.

"McKay, how's it going?" he asked. "Figured out what that lab's for yet?"

John took the hint as Teyla pushed against him, taking a step back. The confusion was clearly evident on his face as he looked questioningly into her eyes. Had he done something wrong?

He really felt like a jerk, not to mention pretty ackward, when Teyla tried to explain the nature of their relationship.

“I’m sorry… I thought… I just assumed…,” he stumbled over his words as the door to his quarters abruptly opened, cutting off any apology he was going to make.

And if John wasn’t confused before in misreading Teyla’s intentions, he was surely confused now at McKay’s accusations.

“I’m Kirk? But you said my name was John,” he looked between Rodney and Teyla, realizing just how dependent he was on these people to tell him who he was. The thought that they could be lying to him hadn’t occured — until now. “Just who the hell am I and what’s really going on around here?” he demanded in taking a few more steps away from Teyla, spotting a set of golf clubs out of the corner of his eye — the only defensive weapons he could find on short notice if it came to that.

Teyla turned a murderous look on McKay. *Oh, GOOD ONE, Rodney!*

What had taken place between her and Sheppard would have to wait. As Teyla watched John step back a bit like a cornered caneta, she realised there might be some irreparable damage here. Taking a non-threatening stance, Teyla spoke in a soothing tone.

“You are John Sheppard. Rodney was only…” Teyla sighed and looked to McKay. Damned if she knew what Rodney was doing. “He was only joking.”

McKay rolled his eyes at himself when Sheppard started to freak out. really, just when he couldn’t screw up any more …. He cringed at Teyla’s anger, but didn’t argue back; she was right. He was seriously considering having Carson sew a zipper over his lips at this rate. (Well, except for the whole pain thing.)

“Look, she’s right, you are John Sheppard. ‘Kirk’ is a-a pop culture reference to a show called Star Trek — in it, there’s a captian named Kirk who is always getting involved with beautiful alien women. It’s something you have a bit of a track record of doing yourself, and when I saw you with Teyla, I … I guess I overreacted. I’m sorry, okay? Just … just relax. Go back to what you were doing. Here …” He turned, found the box he was looking for, and opened it. He took out a package of Twinkies and handed it to Sheppard, trying to keep his hand from trembling but not really succeeding. “You guys can share that or whatever.”

"A joke?" John repeated, raising both brows as he looked at Teyla. Funny, but he wasn't getting it. "An inside joke, I take it," he said in looking over at Rodney while the man attempted to explain the joke.

"Oh, yeah. That's a good one," he said in lifting his head slightly, realizing just how close to the mark McKay had hit. "Real funny, uh... Rodney, right?" he asked to clarify the man's name but shot Teyla an apologetic look.

He didn't know that he had a, um, reputation. Was he really that bad? He was going to have to see that show McKay was talking to find out for himself. But that in itself brought up another question. If he was always getting involved with women, then he guessed he wasn't married and Teyla obviously wasn't his girlfriend, but was there anyone else.

"Uh, thanks," John said in taking the box of Twinkies, not exactly sure what to do with it. "So, uh, am I like -- I don't know -- involved with anyone? Like do I have a girlfriend? Or someone?"

Uncomfortable, Teyla's gaze went to the floor to Rodney and then back to John.

"No." Teyla would have liked her voice more firm but then she didn't really know, did she? John, at the best of times, wasn't the most talkative man on Atlantis. He could be a real good contender to Ronon's grunts or one-word answers at times.

"Not that we know of..." And as she added those words, she glanced once more at McKay. As if to check the scientist didn't know any better.

"Well, yes I was joking, but no, it's not an inside joke, not really -- both Captain Kirk and your're own romantic escapades are widely-known. But hey, at least your prowess in bed isn't in question!" he added, trying to be positive.

"Yeah, I'm Rodney. Mckay. Geez, even with amnesia you have a better memory than I do -- I'm terrible with names ..."

Rodney caught Teyla's look. "Well, don't look at me, I apparently date people without even knowing it -- you can hardly expect me to keep up with the colonel's mating habits," he muttered.

Teyla winced. Over time, the Athosian had gotten used to Rodney's abrasive nature but that did not excuse it. And in this instance, with John visibly barely holding on to his sanity and composure, she wished Rodney would be more sensitive and stop throwing careless and potentially hurtful remarks around. Had she been closer to him, she would have swatted him upside the head much like one did an inconsiderate child.

"Rodney!" She grounded out, a clear warning in her tone.

Didn't the man have any sense? If he didn't tame that tongue of his, she would do it for him and that excercise would more likely involve one of Ronon's many blades. The more ragged and rusted the better.

Rodney flinched at the warning-note in Teyla's voice; by the look on her face, and the slightly freak-out expression on the colonel's, he realised he'd screwed up. Again. He couldn't quite meet Sheppard's eyes as he apologised. "Look, um ... i-if you could remember what you knew of me, you'd know I have a terrible tendency to say what I'm thinking without ... well, thinking, especially when I;m upset, like now, and you probably should just, um ... i-ignore me, okay? 'Cause I really don't want you to kill me when you get your memories back -- and you will get them back, I promise. Maybe I've let you down before, but ..." He looked Sheppard in the eye and squared his shoulders. "I won't this time, John." Seeing the lack of familiarity in Sheppard's -- in his best friend's eyes -- was like a knife in his gut. He hoped he managed to fix the device soon, because the stress was going to kill him at this rate .... "I-ll just, ah, see myself out. You two ..." he was about to say "have fun", but that didn't seem appropriate. "Er, I'll see you later, I guess." If you're still speaking to me ... and if I haven't been fired -- although at this rate, maybe I should save them the trouble and hand in my sesignation -- after I make sure Sheppard gets better ...

At McKay's response to Teyla's question, both of John's eyebrows creeped way up his forehead and he must have had that dear caught in headlights look. To say he felt uncomfortable at the moment was the understatement of the year.

Holding his hand about waist level, he tried to wave Rodney off. "Can we, uh, not talk about that in mixed company?" he asked in giving Teyla another apologetic look, although he was probably more uncomfortable about it all than she was.

God, am I really that bad? he thought to himself. Considering what had just transpired between Teyla and himself, John was inclined to believe what Rodney said. Boy, do I owe her one big apology!

And speaking of apologies...

"Ooooookay...," John said in response to the rapid fire one that Rodney just spout off. Or at least he thought the man was trying to apologize. One thing John could say about him, the man certainly was strange. And he's supposed to be a friend?

"Rodney, I'm sure you'll do everything you can," he reassured him and tossed him the box of Twinkies. For some reason, it seemed important that McKay have them. "Just in case you need a sugar fix or something," he explained.

At McKay's reaction, Teyla's eyes softened. While he always did his best work under pressure, she didn't like seeing him like this, agitated and worried senseless. She tried a bit of humour, wanting to let him know she wouldn't really use Ronon's knives on him.

"Rodney is always after the next fix," Teyla said with a wink in a tone she wanted kinder.

Adressing him directly now as he stood near the door, ready to flee, she added, "Rodney, I do not believe you will let Colonel Sheppard down."

Rodney just barely caught the twinkies, and didn't notice the paper that fluttered out of the box, the one on which he had written

“Sheppard~

Carson told me about the sacrifice you made. Here’s your Twinkie back — with interest.

~Dr R M McKay, PhD”

back when he had left Shepard the box in the first place. And here John was sacrificing a whole lot of Twinkies, and he didn't even know Rodney now! "Thanks," he whispered.

He did his best to smile bravely at Teyla's kind words, nodding with more confidence than he felt, not trusting his voice not to crack if he actually spoke. Tucking the box under his arm, he hurried out the door.

He made it about three hundred feet bfore he frantically opened the box and practically inhaled one of the golden cakes.

John wasn't exactly sure what Teyla meant about Rodney always being after the next fix. Though he figured that either the man had a major sweet tooth or he liked to eat.

"Yeah, sure," he replied to Rodney as the man hastily beat it out the door.

John looked at Teyla and shrugged, not knowing what to make of it all.

"Friendly guy," he finally said in being a bit sarcastic. "So, um... can I see my spaceship now?"

"I was just about to suggest the same," Teyla said, trying to put all the embarrassment she felt in a corner of her mind and put a smile on her face.

She wanted to apologise for Rodney but she knew it would be of no use. The scientist was just as likely to insult or be rude again next time he met John as he was to horde all the energy bars next time they were on out on a mission.

If they ever got Sheppard back...

"Follow me."

John flashed Teyla a cocky smile, evidentally pleased that he was finally going to get a look at this spaceship. The whole thought that he flew one was too cool for words.

"So," he began as he followed Teyla out into the hall. "Does everyone around here fly spaceships?" he asked in wondering just how common place that was.

Teyla cocked an eyebrow, a smile pulling at the corner of her mouth. She remembered John saying that he enjoyed ferris wheels and anything that went faster than two hundred miles an hour. Of course he would think (or hope) that everybody flew spaceships, too.

"No. Most travel through the Ring of the Ancestors." Teyla glanced at Sheppard walking beside her, looking around like he truly saw this place for the first time. "Faster, more economical. But we do use the Puddle Jumpers to get to places where there are no Rings."

Leading him up the control tower to a large hangar, they were soon standing in front of the tall doors opening into the jumper bay.

"We're just above the gate room," Teyla started to explain as the doors swished open and revealed puddle jumpers stacked on several levels.

"We can exit through the floor to the gate or the roof opens up and we can take to the skies." Her hand motioned to the visible ridges where floor and ceiling could part though she figured Sheppard's keen eye had already figured as much.

"Okay, that's something else I need to see," John commented about this "Ring" -- whatever it was -- as they walked along to the hangar doors. "So, is this Ring in the...," his voice trailed off as the doors opened and he got a look at the neat rows of jumpers.

He walked into the center of the hangar, turning around to encompass it all. The spaceships didn't look as aerodynamic as he imagined. They were just little cylinders with no visible means of propulsion.

How in the hell do these things fly? he thought to himself, glancing down to the floor and then up to the ceiling as Teyla indicated them.

"These things really fly?" he asked in looking at Teyla doubtfully. "They look like led balloons. "Soooo, which one's mine?"

Teyla smiled. "Yes, they do fly. And quite well."

Moving in further and heading slightly to the left of the hangar, Teyla ran her hand along the fuselage of the closest Jumper. "They are not very good gliders though," she added, throwing a funny look at John over her shoulder.

"I believe Jumper One over there to be the one you fly most often."

"I can imagine," John said as took in the jumpers, totally missing the look on Teyla's face.

"What? So, I fly all of them?" he asked in finally looking at her. "I don't like have one all to myself with my name and codename paited on it? Hey, do I even have a codename?"

He walked over the ship Teyla had identified as Jumper One, running his hand along it's side as he walked it's length. "Okay, I give up. How do you open one of these things up?" he asked as he rounded the back, jumping slightly as the rear hatch opened.

He looked at Teyla. "I didn't do that," he proclaimed his innocence and tentatively stepped inside the dark cabin only to have the little craft seemingly come to life. "I didn't do that either," he stated in looking over his shoulder to Teyla.

"Oh..." Teyla vaguely remembered an Earth movie about jet fighter pilots and a lot of testosterone. "I see. No, not quite like Top Gun, I'm afraid." She hoped she got the reference right. "You are usually flying Jumper One but not exclusively. As for a 'codename'... I do not recall anyone calling anything other than your rank or name. Maybe back on your homeworld you have one? I can check with Major Lorne." A fellow Air Force officer, surely he would know, Teyla thought.

When the rear hatch of Jumper One opened and Sheppard nearly jumped out of his skin, Teyla could not hold in a chuckle. "Actually, you did both."

"No codename? Well, guess I'll work on that," John said as looked around the interior of the jumper.

"I did that? What do you mean, I did it?" he asked in slowly walking into the forward cabin where the cockpit was located. And as previously, where ever he ventured, the lights came on automatically.

"Okay, this is weird," he said as he stopped in front of the control console, looking around.

As far as cockpits went, the jumper was a hell of a lot more roomier than a Blackhawk or F-16. In fact, the interior of the jumper reminded him more of a Winnebago. Come to think of it, the ship pretty much looked like a Winnebago, but without tires. And the fact that he was able to internally make comparrisons gave him some small comfort in that maybe he hadn't forgotten everything or that maybe some of his memories were coming back.

John reached out and placed his hand on the control console, causing it to come to life. He immediately pulled his hand back as he looked at the device suspiciously.

"Okay, that wasn't my fault," he protested. "I-I, just touched it," he said to Teyla innocently while pointing at the console accusingly. "Is it supposed to do that?"

A wide smile across her face, Teyla nodded. How was she going to explain this one? But John did seem to remember things, such as the apparent need for codenames, so maybe he would remember some Biology...

"You have the gene. It, and I mean most Ancient technology, responds to it."

Looking down at the console, she added, "As far as this ship, unless you remember what to do, I would suggest you take a step back because, given your natural affinity with the Ancient technology, you can practically fly it by thoughts alone..."

What if Sheppard sat behind the controls and thought of flying them out of here? Teyla did not think Weir would be very impressed with Teyla for letting that happen.

"I have the what?" John asked, not sure what to make of this revealation. "Is that anything like midichlorians?" Not that he really knew what that was either, but he saw it in a movie once -- or so he thought. Hell, for all he knew, maybe it was real.

"Whoa, wait a minute," he said when Teyla mentioned the ship could fly by thought alone. "You mean the ship can read my mind? And all I have to do is think about it and it'll fly?" he asked in pointing at the console before a sly grin spread across his face. "Cool. What do you say we put that to a test?" he said in eagerly hopping into the pilot's chair like a kid ripping into a present on Christmas morning.

Although John had shared the joy of the Star Wars universe with Teyla at some point, unfortunately she did not remember the term.

Giving Sheppard a blank look, Teyla shrugged before the proverbial lightbulb flashed in her head. "I do not know of those midichlorians but I have heard Doctor Beckett mention mitochondrion..."

When Sheppard pounced on the pilot seat, Teyla's eyes widened.

"I would say let us leave it 'til later," Teyla said a little anxious, her hand landing on John's shoulder. Her whole demeanour was inviting Sheppard out of that chair.

John twisted in his seat to look back at Teyla, giving her a wounded puppy look.

"Aw, come on. If all I have to do is think 'fly' and it flies, what harm can that do? And I am a pilot, right?" he asked as the jumper obeyed and lifted off the hangar floor unexpectedly. The problem was, when he mentioned fly, he was thinking about it and the jumper responded, raising a few feet to hang in the air.

"Whoa! This is cool," he smiled as he felt the jumper lift. "Come on, Teyla. It'll be fun."

"Oh!" Teyla let out, grabbing for the back of the pilot's seat. Despite the inertial dampeners, the jolt when the jumper took off the ground sent Teyla off-balance.

"The roof is not even opened!" Teyla said to try and reason with him, her eyes looking up even though she could not see through the jumper's bulkhead.

"And what if you lose consciousness again? What then?" Teyla did not think she could fly them both home safely - or even land the craft.

The whole situation reminded her that maybe this was something she should remedy. Maybe John, when back to normal, or even Major Lorne, could show her the basics.

"Well, we'll just have to open it then," John replied simply as he looked at the controls trying to figure which one actually opened the roof.

"Loose consciousness?" he asked in looking back at her. "The doc said I was fine. Besides, wasn't it a machine that made me black out in the first place?" he tried to reason with her as he turned his attention back to the control console.

Although he had to admit though -- she may be right. If he couldn't figure out how to open the roof, they weren't going anywhere.

"How do you open the roof anyway?" he asked and the HUD popped up, drawing his attention to it and displaying a schematic of the jumper's console functions with a blinking light indicating which control opened the roof.

"Now, this is just too cool. It really can read my mind," John beamed, just itching to the jumper out for a spin.

"By the Ancestors," Teyla muttered to herself as her gaze locked on the HUD.

"Do you even remember how to fly, John?" Teyla asked nervously. The man did not even remember his own name!

Like a child, he bounced with excitement. Teyla sighed and activated her comms. "Flight, this is Jumper One. Permission to go for a test flight?" Teyla asked the control room, hoping someone there would have more sense than she and say no.

"Well... no," John had to conceed to that point as he glanced up at her. "But do I really have to remember if all I have to do is think about flying? Don't worry, I'll figure it out," he assured her.

He didn't even wait for the response to get permission to take the jumper out and toggled the control to open the roof. As the hangar bay's ceiling spiraled open, the jumper rose past the banks of parked ships and up the last few feet of the central control tower until it cleared it.

Once out of the tower, John was awestruck by the city's expanse he saw out the windscreen and banked the jumper to the right to explore it from a bird's eye view. And while he might not have remembered exactly how to fly a jumper -- and making Teyla extremely nervous in the process -- for him, flying was instinctual and came as naturally to John as breathing.

(OOC: NPCing Chuck here, briefly. *grin*)

"Copy your request," Chuck, the technician currently manning the control room's main desk, replied to Teyla. "Give me a moment to clear authorisation."

He looked to the personnel around him. "Isn't Colonel Sheppard with Teyla?" Chuck asked, unsure of what to do. He had heard through the grapevine what had happened earlier with one of McKay's experiments and was amazed the Colonel would want to venture out, or even more so that someone else was willing to fly with him.

He was about to call Dr. Weir when an alarm sounded.

"It's the Jumper bay," the woman next to Chuck said. "Someone's opened the hangar's roof."

"What the hell?" Chuck muttered under his breath, not used to Teyla or John Sheppard to be messing with protocols.

"Jumper One, what is going on?"

You do not want to know, Teyla told herself as she frantically grabbed the seat next to John.

Chuck's surprised voice boomed in Teyla's ear again. "Jumper one, do you copy?"

"We copy, Flight," Teyla replied, her annoyance showing in the look she threw Sheppard but also in her tone of voice. "Someone here was rather... impatient. Apologies. Everything is under control." For now.

"Jumper One out."

Teyla turned to Sheppard. "Do not do that again."

John frowned slightly at the tone in Teyla's voice and the reprimand she handed him of not to do it again.

"You sure we're not, uh... you know?" he glanced at her cause she certainly sounded like a wife or girlfriend.

But he didn't pay that much attention to her as he was engrossed with the sight out the front windscreen and the ship he was in control of. It was amazing how the ship responded and it really did seem like it was reading his mind.

"Don't worry," he added as he flipped the jumper over on it's side and threaded the needle between a structual support pylon jutting from one of the city's many towers. "I know what I'm doing -- I think," he added almost under his breath as he completed the roll out in pointing the nose of the jumper down into a vertical dive, leveling out in time for the little ship just to skim over the surface of the ocean before climbing again.

"This. Is. Cool!" John remarked with a wide grin on face, not feeling a thing as he expected to be pulling some G's or the tight turns he made with the jumper. And the amazing thing of it was, he really did seem to know what he was doing and he so totally felt within his element. Maybe he really was a pilot after all.

Teyla narrowed her eyes on him but refused to dignify his remark with an answer. Did he not understand his behaviour was reckless, given the circumstances? Teyla was merely trying to keep him out of trouble. Chances were that after this stunt, Dr. Beckett would confine him to quarters.

And Dr. Weir was undoubtedly by now most displeased with Teyla for allowing John to put resources and equipment at risk... and maybe lives. What if he crashed the jumper on the city? Teyla shuddered at the thought and, right on cue, as if to illustrate her point, John spun the jumper on its side, flying it through a tight spot before sending it into a dive.

Teyla held her breath until he levelled the craft. Cool?

"Yes. Very," she commented tightly, glad that some part of Sheppard was still in there somewhere and it was not just his rebellious nature.

John was grinning from ear to ear as their little joy ride ended. He was a like a little kid with a bright shiny new toy. He'd made a few more passes through the city and around it before returning to the hangar bay.

Once he'd lowered the jumper into the central tower bay and parked it, he turned to face Teyla. "Now, that was fun. We'll have to do it again sometime. Hey, I know. We'll take it through that big round ring thing. No, wait," he said in snapping his fingers as he had a better idea. "It's a spaceship, right? Let's take it into outter space! How cool would that be? Let's go right after dinner," he looked around as another thought ocurred to him. "When is dinner around here anyway?"

It was so uncharacteristic of John to placate anyone with so many questions all at once that Teyla sort of stared at him for a moment before she answered.

"In a couple of hours," she said, glancing at her watch. "Though the mess hall will cater for just about any meal at any time since most work shifts."

With a calming breath, she added, "Thank you for the flight." Even scared Sheppard would not remember how to fly, Teyla had appreciated her visit of the city from the air. They so rarely had an opportunity to do so.

"We will have to see with Dr. Weir about going any further."

"You're welcome," he replied to Teyla with a boyish smile. Flying was fun! Then he frowned slightly regarding dinner. "Couple of hours. Right..." John said as he thought. "So, what do we do now? Go see Dr. Weir?" he asked. "What do I normally do about this time?"

He hadn't a clue and the frustration clearly showed on his face. He didn't know what to do or what he should be doing. He just didn't remember nor did he know where -- let alone how -- he fit into this place. All he knew was what he was told -- he was in the Air Force, led his own team, and a pilot -- but what did he do exactly?

"Teyla? How long have we known each other?" he asked her quite seriously. "What I'm getting at is, how well do you know me? Can you tell me who I am other than a military pilot? Like, do I have any favorite foods? What kind of music do I like? Are you my only friend? Who am I?"

John felt totally lost. But when he was flying, he felt at ease, almost at peace with himself as if that's who he was and where he belonged. Flying made the doubts and frustrations go away and he was tempted to go back up, regardless of if he was supposed to or not. He glanced at the control panel longingly as he contemplated the thought.

Teyla was about to offer taking John to the mess hall anyway, since he appeared to be hungry, when he brought up a more serious concern.

"I..."

Slightly flustered because it was so unusual to see John so disoriented, Teyla tried to handle his questions as delicately as she could. It was difficult because while she knew what kind of man John Sheppard was - honorable, selfless and kind - he was also a very private person.

Taking one question at the time, she replied, "We have known each other for near three years now. We..." A fond smile appeared on her face. "We are teammates but we also socialise outside of work." At least, she liked to think so. They were not inseparable but it was not rare to find the team sharing meals together, relaxing in front of a movie or training together.

"I do not know about your friends back on your homeworld," Teyla said, though, based on a certain conversation she had had with Sheppard she had a pretty good idea, "But you have found friends in your team. Rodney, Ronon and myself. And also in Carson and Elizabeth - Doctors Beckett and Weir," she clarified.

"We often eat and unwind together. It is hard for me to tell you what you do with the others, but I know you spar with Ronon and I on a regular basis, play games with Rodney..." Noting the lack of a spark in Sheppard's eyes, Teyla added, "Chess. Computer games also." She skipped over what problems a particular SIM-lookalike game had caused.

"I heard you're an avid golf player and you told me once that you enjoyed Ferris wheels, college football and anything that goes faster than two hundred miles per hour," she quoted back at him. "You seem to have diverse tastes in music but I am probably not the right person to ask this as I am not well-versed in Earth's music genres. But I can tell you Aliens and Star Wars are two of your favourite movies." At his questioning look, Teyla smiled. "You made me watch them with you a handful of times each already. And that reminds me... you love pop corn, as do I."

Teyla reached out to him, her hand going to rest on his on the armrest. "John, I know you are a good man. A good leader. I consider you family."

Homeworld? Okay, so he wasn't originally from here -- where ever here was -- or this city.

"Really? I hangout and play games with that Rodney guy?" John asked in pondering that. "But he seems so -- I don't know -- up tight," he stated in finding it interesting that he had a friend like that.

Huh, but then again, what did he know? Maybe he was just as up tight, though somehow he doubted that.

"I wish I could remember those movies," he said in glancing away before looking up sharply at Teyla when she mentioned she considered him family.

Oh, crap! he thought as he realized just how collosal of a mistake he had made earlier by kissing Teyla. Good one, John!

"Family?" he questioned. "Uh... about earlier? You know, the um... I uh, really screwed up with that and I'm really sorry. Especially since you consider me family and all. That is -- of course -- unless you see me in ah, um... husbandly capcity? Then it would be okay. Not that I'm saying it was okay," he quickly corrected himself. "I'm just saying that... uh, you know, I'm sorry," he attempted to apologize yet again regarding the incident. "I'm so going to hell for that one," he muttered to himself.

"Uptight, and stressed out." Teyla nodded with a smile. "I think you probably help him channel some of it..." Teyla wasn't sure to be honest. She had been as surprised as John was right now when they had all found out about that 'Build Your Own Nation' game he and Rodney had been playing. But there it was.

Family...

Teyla was just about to clarify what she had meant by that when John launched himself in a monologue Rodney would have been proud of.

"Husbandly capacity?" Teyla looked at Sheppard slightly surprised. And then abruptly her expression broke into a wide smile. As endearing as he was, wondering if he was enough of a gentleman around her, she and John were just friends.

Not that she had never considered more - and it was John's very fault for her thoughts to wander down that path once upon a time - but the both of them had never drifted that way. Sometimes she wondered, like now, how much of it, of that kiss, had been the iratus bug's doing. She doubted she would ever know.

Chuckling, she tried to ease his mind. "John, it is fine. I understand." While she could have teased him at this stage, she did not have the heart to do so to a man who had lost his memory. Fate seemed cruel enough. But who was she to say how he really felt about her. "We are just friends - as far as I know," she added with a smirk.

John wasn't sure how to take her comment. He didn't know whether he should take it as an insult or a compliment about helping McKay channel his stress. He didn't know if Teyla meant he was a cause for some it or a release vavle. He was about to ask her to clarify that when she hit him with his own words with an uneasy expression.

"Uh, yeah," he said in scratching the back of his head. "I mean if you consider me as family like, uh, a brother -- then what I did, um, back there was... well, wrong," he attempted to clarify. "But if you see me more along the lines of well -- a husband, then it wasn't so bad. Not that any of it was right to begin with -- I just thought -- well, you know," he shrugged, wincing inwardly as this wasn't exactly going well. "Okay, I'm shutting up now before I dig that hole I'm in deeper," he said in giving her a sheepish look, before it turned into a lopsidded smile when Teyla started laughing.

"Well, good. I'm glad one of us understands," he said before both his eyebrows shot up. "As far as you know?" he looked at her with some uncertainty before he realized what she was doing. "Oh, now you're just messing with me. Gee, thanks." But two could play that game...

"Though you know, that kiss wasn't half bad," he said in giving Teyla a devious look as he reached out to take her hand. "In fact, you didn't push me away right away," he pointed out and gave her a hard tug, pulling her into his lap. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say you like me," he caressed her check. "And a little more than in just a family way," he said in getting his face dangeroulsy close to hers...
