The Man of Letters needed to know that his family was okay, even if they weren't exactly his family. If they were, then he'd be in a bit of a fix without his father around. So, he had accepted they were his family one or two realities removed. This meant he'd have to look after them, even if at a distance. Keeping a distance wasn't going to be easy, not after talking to two of them.

Rob went searching for family, just to check on them, as well as for the Russian. He'd met Isaac who was interesting in definitely the right sort of ways, even if he was a little dangerous. Hell, Piotr was just as dangerous if not more so. There were also Betsy and Lucretia.

He meandered, getting a small snack in the form of a yogurt parfait - it wasn't overly masculine, but it was good and good for him. Enjoying his snack, he headed toward the observation deck and spied a blond head. He'd guess it was Jo, but he wasn't going to go say hi. Not yet. He sat down not far away where he could watch her to make sure she was okay. He wasn't exactly hiding, so she could probably see him.

Jo was looking for people. She wanted to find Cas and Anna and make sure they were all right. She'd found Mary and Johnny already. She wanted to find Dean for a lot of reasons. And she'd also been looking for Rob. There were certainly questions she had for the guy that she'd met back on the Noir-ish world.

She'd stopped her search briefly to look outside that window. Oh but she did keep going back to the window. The stars outside, the fact that it was obvious they were flying through actual Space, well that was more than a little amazing to her. She couldn't help but steal a glance here and there as she went back and forth between the two floors, wondering how the hell it was so hard to find people when space was that limited.

She looked up as she heard someone approach. Well, that was fortunate, she thought silently.

"Rob," she said, greeting the man and moving a little bit closer.

He did look strikingly similar to Sam and it still unnerved her. She couldn't shake that. Especially now that he'd been present at Mary's rescue without any explanation from anyone as to what he was doing there and why he'd seemed so invested in making sure she was okay. Maybe he was just a guy who happened to have a crush or a friend, but Jo had a feeling it was more than that. Perhaps.

"Jo," Rob replied with a tilt of his head before eating a little more yogurt. He went back to watching the light show that was thousands if not more years old. It was the only thing that seemed right to say. Plus, he was eating. He'd been taught not to eat and talk at the same time.

The Man of Letters would now and then follow an alien with his eyes, focusing on this one or that one. They had many interesting aspects, and he didn't see a reason to not watch.

This was going to be interesting. She had that look. Rob could always tell when his mother was curious; it wasn't the most obvious thing, but growing up with it had given Rob the advantage. He couldn't help being slightly surprised and amused that the look wasn't something Jo had developed upon having children.

The greeting and the way he simply turned his attention back to the view as though there was nothing to see, move it along. Jo wasn't sure why, but it irritated her just a little bit.

"I never got the chance to thank you for helping to rescue Mary."

Jo didn't bother with beating around the bush. She didn't like small talk and she really didn't like screwing around if there was something that needed discussion. So she simply opened with the topic that she wanted to discuss and waited to see if Rob would volunteer information. Or react in any way, really. The expression on his face might tell just as much as whatever words came out of his mouth next. Maybe.

"No problem. Met them on the way. Gave a hand." Rob sounded almost nonchalant. Almost. He took a few more spoonfuls of yogurt, finishing it off. He held up a hand to excuse himself and find a place close by to get rid of the container. He wasn't cutting the conversation off, that would only push her to start digging further. He would be back, and soon he was.

"How's she doing?" It seemed the right thing to ask. It was expected. Rob seemed comfortable enough.

"How are you?" The question also seemed fitting. He wasn't exactly asking something that would expose him, who he was. He hated hiding, but he didn't think this truth would help her. There were times he wished he could contact his parents and tell them just how much he understood why she'd kept the truth from him.

"Met who? Johnny and Max? They just told you about the kidnapping?" Jo asked. It didn't seem like something Johnny would do, that was for sure.

Oh, she believed that Johnny would have called in every favor possible to get Mary back safely. But he wouldn't have spouted his mouth off to any random person on the street. There had to be a reason he'd told Rob.

"Mary's doing... as well as can be expected," Jo answered. "And I'm okay, if you ignore the part where I'm stranded on an alien spaceship as some part of a science experiment."

She cracked a small smile at that. It sounded ludicrous and she was sure there were a ton of alien abduction jokes in there if she felt up to making them.

"Johnny knew I'd talked to Mary; we've got to keep together, work together. So, they let me know." Rob had to explain it after all. Jo would keep at it; he couldn't expect her to just drop the subject. She probably wouldn't even after his own short version of events. He shrugged and looked around.

"Yeah, crazy, right? Aliens really do exist." Winchesters didn't believe in aliens. They dealt with the supernatural. The one time anyone even admitted to considering aliens had turned out to be fairies, so the fact that they did exist made for an interesting bit of information.

"The food thing. Replicator or something. Wonder how long they'd been watching humans to get that? I suspect most of us are human; we don't seem to have many other kinds running around." He gave her a slight smile. Perhaps he should have been more fascinated with it all, but strange was his family business. Had they plopped him in a library though....

Jo frowned and studied Rob's face more closely. She didn't care if she was being rude or weird. That face was far too familiar, though it wasn't an exact duplicate. There was a lot of Sam in there and Jo was sure that there was more than a passing resemblance to her dad as well. It was unsettling and maybe she was just projecting because of Mary, but there was something to that familiarity that her mind just wouldn't let go.

"So you're a friend of Mary's?" she asked. "How did you meet her?"

It hadn't been at the diner, since Mary had left that pretty quickly and Jo had been the one to meet Rob.

"I think there are at least a few who aren't human," she said, knowing full well that it went beyond just 'thinking.' "It's funny but if someone told me a year ago that I'd be abducted by aliens, I would have laughed at them. Then again, that's the story of my life, I suppose."

She'd thought growing up that nothing could ever surprise her. After all, she knew about the things that lurked in the shadows. Knew that the sources of most nightmares and horror movies were reality. What more could there be to shock her? Oh how wrong she'd been.

"We met back on the Halloweaster world. Woke up in a house, came out on the porch, and she gave me the rundown once she saw me." Rob definitely knew that look. He had acquired some immunity to it, but it was strange seeing it on a face so young. His mother was an attractive woman, yet this was just strange, so very different and familiar all at once.

"Yeah. Funny how that worked out with Johnny." The fact that Jo hadn't said anything about Johnny' was very interesting. Other than wondering why Rob had been pulled along.

Jo looked at Rob suspiciously. Whatever her feelings about Johnny and the revelations of late, he was still more a part of their 'circle' than Rob was. As such, if anyone was going to hunt him, it'd be herself or Dean and she would be protective of him over anyone else that might want to hurt him.

"How what worked out with Johnny?"

She still didn't know this guy, but he definitely seemed to have taken an interest in Mary and the rest of their group and Jo wasn't sure what to make of it.

"Pretty sure there wasn't a pulse." Rob shrugged. "I could be wrong. I'm not a doctor, not even a volunteer firefighter." A Winchester knew how to do better work than most field medics. It was part of the usual education for a hunter and a Winchester hunter at that. Rob had learned it, even if he did turn more to the Men of Letters and their search for knowledge.

"Glad that everyone seems to be okay though." The youngest Winchester shrugged and looked out at the stars. Yes, he knew Jo when she'd caught on to something. He also knew how she could be suspicious. Most times she had every right to be so.

"It looked dicey, but he lived," Jo said, not lying but not telling the truth. Her tone was strong enough that it left no room for questions. She was half-tempted to tell Rob to back off because this was a family member.

Yes, she was protective of the man who'd moved in on Mary. Less out of friendship and more because of what he meant to her daughter.

She gave Rob a plain, no-nonsense look.

"So. I'd like to try this conversation again with the truth about how you know Mary. Who is she to you?"

"Right. Start over. We could start over with that, or you could start over with the Johnny thing." Rob smirked at her. He was the good son, but both Winchester kids would call their parents out when they noticed something was off.

"It's really up to you. We could try the witty banter, the threats, the talking in riddles, and the only one who may get frustrated in this is you." So he was showing more of his hand than he meant to; he'd just never been the one to have more info than his mother or father. Well, life information anyway. There were times Rob had more information than either Jo or Sam wanted or needed, but he'd never hold that against them, much. He tried not to act like an asshat knowitall if he could avoid it.

"So, gimme the look, attack me, whatever you think you have to do, but getting the information out of me - it's not going to be easy and you're not going to like it." He shrugged.

Jo felt her irritation rising as Rob baited her. She looked at him cooly, seeing a dead end at the moment.

"Forget it. I don't have time to play games. I'll just ask Mary."

Assuming that Mary knew what was going on with Rob. Things certainly weren't all that they seemed, but Jo still didn't know exactly what was going on. She stood up straight, drawing up to her full height as she met his eyes.

"But make no mistake about this-if you didn't know before, Mary's my family. Which means that as long as Johnny's important to her, he might as well be family either. Right now my gut is that whatever you're hiding doesn't mean that you intend to harm us but if you do try to hurt either of them, it won't be pretty."

Jo might not look like much, but she could definitely hold her own in a fight and Lord help anyone who tried to mess with her family.

Rob couldn't help the smile. He knew he shouldn't, but he couldn't help it. There was something good about seeing his mother even as young as she was, still looking for herself and for her place with the Winchesters and in the world, something good about seeing her so very protective.

"You can, but I don't know much she'll tell you. She might tell you everything - as she knows it. Or she might tell you to let it be - for your own good. She doesn't want you hurt." His hands went up. "Not a threat, just saying."

He shrugged. "It will hurt. If you keep digging at this, and I don't want you to be hurt either." He gave her a slight smile and a hint of puppy dog that was definitely his father's.

"Just accept that I'm round, and that I helped Mary and her not so dead but was definitely dead boyfriend. It doesn't need to be more than that." He was probably digging his own grave, yet he didn't want her to push. It would mean heartache and confusion...for everyone.

Jo stared at Rob, the familiarity in his features nagging at her. The concern was there too, and she just didn't know why. She drew up to her full height and looked him in the eyes.

"I don't know what you know about the last few years, but believe me when I say that I've been hurt worse. I can take whatever you have to dish out."

She'd already had her mind blown by more than one revelation. She'd already had things turned entirely upside down and she'd survived.

"Besides, what do you care about my feelings? You barely know me."

Maybe it was going on a hunch, but it seemed like the right thing to say. Or maybe she was just lashing out because she was frustrated at more secrets being kept.

Rob's eyes narrowed. She was fishing. Again the smile that could get him in trouble and often did with her slid across his lips before he schooled himself.

"You're right." He sobered quickly. Almost as if something had become clear. "I don't know you. Not really. But, I know someone like you. She's important to me; I wouldn't want her hurt, not if I could prevent it. I'm sure you can handle a lot - she could. Doesn't mean you should have to."

He stood straight, not towering over her like his father had. Not as his uncle did. He wasn't the tallest Winchester, but he wouldn't go down easily.

"Look after Mary and Johnny." He started to step away.
