A-hole, present and accounted for.
Who: James and Quinn
What: Quinn notices James' fuckery and questions him. James is intrigued.
When: Midafternoon, Monday
Where: Quinn's office, courthouse
Rating: TBD
Open? to [info]northern_lights only

James had gotten a voicemail from Quinn Whelan that brought a smirk to his lips. She'd called to ask him to come into the DA's office about 'inconsistencies in some of the files he'd been working on concerning the Marino family' and questions she had. James would go. He'd bullshit her like he had everyone else about his work within in the FBI.

He called off his self-imposed surveillance on Lucas Marino to head in, finding her office without much trouble. James straitened out his suit, clearing his throat and plastering his face with his most dashing, shit-eating grin. Women were easy. Women in law enforcement were easier.

Knocking lightly, James turned the doorknob, letting himself into her office. He saw her sitting at her desk, and smiled even wider. "Ms. Whelan?"

Earlier that morning, Quinn's superior (that is to say, the District Attorney of Boston) had called her into his office. She had arrived, eager to please her boss. No matter what assignment he had thrown her way, since the fiasco with FBI Director Emerson Mordant, she had answered her duty with precision and a certain doggedness. And, over time, it would seem that Congressman Whelan's contribution to the state had paid off for his daughter. Once again, she was back in the good graces of her superiors.

That was the only reason he could have thrusted the particular folder that he had, into her hands. Either that, or it had been a moment of immense cruelty. Once she had opened the folder, she had to fight to contain the shock and wariness. As a rule, Quinn Whelan despised anything and everything related to the FBI. Call it gunshy, call it a dislike for being used as cattle and sheep are used, but whatever it was called, it was strong. She had wanted to decline the assignment right then and there, but that, of course, would have been occupational suicide.

So she had accepted the folder, and had spent the morning rummaging through it. The clerks had done a well enough job in separating the papers and organizing them. It hadn't taken long for her to find the inconsistencies in some of the files, or the name attached to those files. And though it brought a bitter taste to her mouth, she had made the phone call to his office, requesting that Agent James Lenscher make an appearance at the courthouse. To clarify a few things.

She had been finishing a call to one of her contacts on the Boston police department when she heard the knock on her door. Hastily hanging up, Quinn looked up just in time to see the agent let himself in. This, above all else, including that shit eating grin, grated on her nerves. And though she rarely thought ill of people, various scathing remarks flitted through her mind like butterflies beating their wings.

She detested the look on his face, so smeared with smugness. It was the same look, or same cockiness, with which she had fallen under the spell of a different agent a year prior. Straightening herself, she pushed her chair back and stood up. Nimble fingers smoothed over the soft blouse she had on, her free hand moving to straighten the reading glasses that were perched against her nose.

"Agent Lenscher, I presume." Her voice was cool and collected, though she felt anything but. It was that instinctive fight or flight response that had developed after nearly losing her job. "I would ask that you come in, but it appears you've already done so." The smile she threw at him was saccharine sweet, but the corners of her mouth portrayed that instant dislike. She moved around her desk, stepping forward. Practical black slacks were worn, along with small heels that clicked lightly against the floor. Think Librarian, but much sexier. Actually, no. Don't think that. Don't think anything that would perk up the sociopath's curiosity ;x.

James moved into her office, nodding. "You would assume correctly. I have to say, I wasn't expecting to be called down to the DA's office." He watched her as she moved around her desk, taking her in slowly. She was obviously feeling 'no-nonsense' today, and the air about her felt tense, worried. He smirked internally, glad to be making her uncomfortable, since she'd inconvenienced his long day of doing nothing and getting paid for it.

Moving toward her at a rapid gait, he stuck out his hand, stepping a little bit closer into her personal space that he'd knew she'd appreciate, just to see if she'd flinch, if she'd move back. His eyes bored into hers, and his grin creeped ever larger. "Nice to make your acquaintance, Ms. Whelan." He took her hand in his, shaking slowly, watching her intently before moving away, dropping her hand, and taking a seat on the guest side of her desk.

He clapped his hands together, then steepled his fingers, looking over them at her. "So, how can I be of assistance to the District Attorney?"

[LMFAO OMG @ THE LAST SUBJECT! TOTALLY ON ACCIDENT!!]

Her head tilted slightly as she studied him. She imagined he was sizing her up as well, and that realization made her skin crawl just a little. There was something off about him. Or maybe that was just her projecting. When she looked at him, she saw another lying FBI agent. It was a miracle she could trust anyone in law enforcement anymore, but the FBI was not included on her 'most trusted' list. Not his fault, true. But it definitely didn't work in his favor, either.

While No, you wouldn't be expecting something like that would you, ran through her mind, she forced that smile to remain. "Just following up on some files that came over from your office."

That smile faded instantly as he moved forward, and she did take that step back. It was instinctive. In that moment, she had envisioned a large jungle cat hunting down its prey. Completely irrational, but he towered over her. Still, as though she realized just what she had done, she stopped a few steps back and from there, stood her ground, chin lifting defiantly, as if daring him to remark on her previous action.

After letting him take her hand, she couldn't shake it off fast enough. "The pleasure is mine," spoken through gritted teeth as she watched him make himself comfortable. "You tell me, Mr. Lenscher," pausing as she made her way back around her desk. The folder was open, though only a handful of its contents were currently displayed. It was a tactic. To see how interested he was, to see how hard he tried to peer at the information. "Do you have any idea why you might be needed to clarify anything on your files?"

Leaning back in her chair, she struggled to look relaxed. It was hard, with Tall, Dark, and Psycho sitting across from her.

[LMFAO. I totally didn't see it at first. WOW, gutter brain!]

James stared at Quinn as she sat herself behind her desk, a smug smirk curling his lips. He'd noticed the file on the table, but didn't pay any attention to it. He knew what was in it. He just didn't care. Instead, he was more interested in the woman who'd called him in. Her jump back at him moving into her personal space had caused a jerk of interest in him.

She was scared. Even if she didn't want to admit it to herself, something about him worried her. He assumed it wasn't his persona. He was too practiced to give himself away that easily. She had to have some kind of bias that caused her such discomfort with him.

He made a note to research later and find out why.

He smiled as she asked him if there was anything that needed clarification in his files. Sure, there was plenty, but none James was just going to cop to. He pursed his lips, shrugging and shaking his head. "None that I know of." His eyes subtly roamed her arms, her fingers, taking in her details. She was small, petite, but strong-looking.

She'd flail and fight enough to make it interesting.

Scared would probably be the wrong word. Uneasy, wary. It was a knee-jerk reaction, even after all of the time in between then and now. But he wasn't wrong about her being worried.

Straightening herself, she leaned forward, one hand falling into her lap. The other picked up one of the sheets of paper and glanced over it, before eyes returned to watching him. "None that you know of." She nodded, as though she'd expected that answer, and folded her hands together, one leg moving to cross over the other. He'd see the hint of movement, but unless he was staring through her desk, he obv. couldn't see the actual movement.

"Are you aware of the inconsistencies that seem to pop up through your files on both the Connelly and Marino families? Or do you make it your practice to ignore the details that may be important to the files you are compiling?" She lifted the top sheet of paper again and turned it, sliding it across her desk, to him. "For instance, can you explain to me what is written on that paper?" She was mocking him, almost. It gave her a sense of empowerment, which she needed.

James adjusted in his chair so he could look at the paper she slid across the desk, and he just nodded. "I could say that that says that the Connelly's are implicated in many events that the Marino's would be especially interested in." James shrugged, grinning and sitting back in his seat. "But then again, I know nothing about this, so I'm sure I'm reading that wrong." James let his hand rest on the piece of paper, the digital signal he left behind whenever anything was changed via computer clearly visible above his fingertips. He slid it slowly back across the desk toward Quinn, his eyes on hers, unmoving.

"Ms. Whelan, I'm not sure exactly what you'd like to accomplish here. I've only done whats been assigned of me to look into the Marino and Connelly feud. Nothing more." It was more than a lie said through a smile, it was bait. James wanted to see how voraciously Quinn was to be going after him for this.

It'd make the chase so much sweeter.

James let his eyes roam over her face quickly, then sat back in the chair, mentally making a checklist. Her wrists were small, he'd have to counter that with duct tape instead of handcuffs. She seemed fond of the Law & Order strong assistant DA garb, so he'd be sure to strip her of that completely, force her into something completely demeaning. He tapped his finger on the arm of the chair lightly, more keeping time with his thoughts that out of boredom.

Ridley will love her, James thought, then his grin grew wider. He stared at Quinn, a bit manic in his expression. He'd been stifled for so long. The ADA of Boston would be a good prize for his mantle. He leaned in again, smirking. "I'm happy to help the DA in any way I can, but I'm not sure how I'd be of assistance here."

Quinn was, by no means, a criminal psychologist. She wasn't even a real psychologist, and the psychology courses she'd had during her years at Smith had long ago faded into the recesses of her mind. It wasn't with an absolute psychological reasoning that she found her skin crawling. She wondered, briefly, if he thought she hadn't picked up on that digital signature.

She glanced down, briefly, hands clasped together. As if to gather her thoughts. And then looked back up, forcing another small smile. "Perhaps I was wrong then, Agent Lenscher." She reached over and examined the paper.

"You, of course, know then, that this document has been altered digitally?" She tapped the piece of paper, then stared at him. "I'm assuming your superiors have been notified?" Leaning over the desk, she allowed her own smirk to curve her lips up. "You .. wouldn't mind me conferring with them, would you?" Though she wasn't a detective, either, years of watching and partaking in cross-examinations allowed her to fish a little.

And to be honest, she definitely had a hunch that he was lying. It wasn't anything he'd said, really. He was a smooth one. And he knew it. She could tell that much. It was written in his smile."You know, you could save me the trouble of calling your boss and just explain how this document came to be altered. There are two ways to do this, and though you claim you've no idea what this is all about, it's your file. If there's one thing I've learned about law enforcement men and women, it's that they're very careful with their paperwork.

Unless they intend to be otherwise." She had leaned back into her chair by then, completely unaware that he was mentally figuring out how he was going to torture her. Yikes.

James watched Quinn, nodding as she asked if he was aware that the documents had been digitally altered. "Yes, I'm sure they have. If you'd looked through the files a little more closely, anything accessed digitally, via the FBI intranet, is considered 'digitally altered'. You're more than welcome to contact my superiors." He smiled congenially, his statement the truth, but not. It was true that the signature turned up whenever anything was accessed, but there were differences between things being accessed and being changed. He just wasn't worried about her noting that difference.

"I'll contact them for you, if you'd like." James pulled out his cell phone, nodding emphatically. "I really wouldn't know how they came to be changed, but I'm happy to let you speak to them. I'm sure they'd be happy to pull surveillance on my office. Perhaps I left my computer logged in and someone else decided it'd be pertinent to change these files. But like I said, anything I can do to help the DA I'm happy to do."

James ran his thumb over the keypad of his cellphone, his eyes trying to use the cell phone as scale. How much larger was her neck than that phone, and would it take both hands to close around it fully? How much would she gasp, fight, claw at his face before she started to black out, before she had that moment of sheer terror that would cloud her eyes and make her realize that she was about to die at his hands?

He'd seen it before. It was almost like sex.

Dialing quickly, James sent a call off to the FBI routing board, sending the call to a voicemail box he'd set up with Mordant's away message, and handed Quinn the phone while it was ringing. He'd get the message, and he wanted to see her reaction.

More than anything, he wanted to see her reaction.

Her expression darkened at his attempt to sound superior. Tilting her head to one side, her expression brightened visibly, albeit sarcastically. "Oh! Well, that must explain all the inconsistencies in your wittle file." If he'd been from the Boston PD, or a law office, there was no way she would have taken that tone with him. But he was FBI, on top of the bad vibes she got from him, so it was no wonder that she was on edge, and therefore, borderline rude.

"Tell me something, Mr. Lenscher." She dropped the 'Agent,' part, figuring it was a formality at best. "Look very closely, please." Her tone had changed from sarcastic to a mix of frosty and annoyed. "Do I look like a second year law student to you?" The words were bit out before she leaned back and shook her head. And she might have offered some more biting words had he not taken that cell phone out.

At first, she eyed the cell phone, curious as to where he was going with that. Obviously she had no idea that he was using it as a scale for her. When he handed her the phone, brow shot up. She took it, just in time to hear Emerson Mordant's voice on the other end. The flinch was barely visible, but it was there. With rapid speed, she snapped the phone shut, or closed it, or whatever it did when ending a call. Swallowing, she studied the man opposite her, forcing that saccharine sweet smile to reappear. "You know what? Don't worry about it. You FBI boys aren't the greatest about returning phone calls." Actually, she was more concerned with one FBI man not returning her call, simply because of the past.

"It's fine, I'm sure I can drop these files by later this week. Get his take on them, in person."

Her sudden demeanor shift was not lost on James. He feigned that he was worried about having had offended her, while internally he was laughing. "Oh, please, I'm sorry if that came off condescending. I know that the FBI files are a mess, in general, so I just wanted to be clear that there are differences. The whole system is mucked up. Someone needs to get in there and fix it." He smiled warmly again, leaning into her desk a little bit.

He watched her take the phone, seeing the small flinch Mordant's voice brought. A smirk passed his lips briefly, and James sat back in his chair, crossing his arms over her chest loosely. Her threats were empty. She'd never go see Mordant willingly. "Sure, you're welcome to do that. I'll be sure he knows to expect your visit." James nodded, then stood from his chair, extending his hand. "If that's all, I'll be going now."

It was more a dismissal of her than it was excusing himself. She had found a thread, yes, and if she kept pulling the whole thing would unravel. But unfortunately for her, James wouldn't give her time to pull hard enough. His mind was formulating a plan. A plan that would need Ridley to be completely satisfying.
