WHO. Paul and Dora
WHAT. Talking.
WHERE. Huffie Commons.
WHEN. Night time.
RATING. G
STATUS. Closed / Complete

Dora chewed at the end of her quill as she stared at the page she was reading, trying to absorb the words written there but to no avail. With a defeated sigh, she closed the text on her lap and stared instead at the fireplace before her. The hearth carried a healthy fire, its flames dancing, and licking against the soot-covered walls of the fireplace. She pushed away her things to the space beside her on the long couch and pulled her knees to her chest.

Things would have been easier if she wasn't so... distracted. If she wasn't thinking about a certain someone who seemed to be nowhere all the time these days. She had too many unanswered questions, and she didn't know how to resolve them. With a sigh, she rested her forehead on her knees. What to do, what to do...

Paul came into the common room, tossing a rugby ball up into the air and catching it as it came back down. He was bored. Bored as sin. He couldn't even sleep because he was too worried about all the work he had to do. But he couldn't do any of it since it was a Saturday night, and he felt completely unmotivated. So it was buming around the common room time.

He went down near the fire looking for a place to sit. And he found the familiar red head sitting here. His ex-girlfriend, but still very very close friend. And she looked... down. Which was wrong. Because anyone who knew Dora knew she should always be happy. That Dora was better off when she was happy.

"Dora?" he said coming over to sit by her on the couch. She was just staring into the fire... "You okay?"

Dora looked up when she'd heard someone call out her name, and found Paul standing there, looking down at her with concerned eyes. "Hey." she said weakly, almost distractedly. She reached a hand up for him, and motioned for him to come closer. "Come sit with me." she asked, hoping somehow that he wouldn't notice she didn't answer his inquiry. It was difficult to tell if she was, right now. "I've been trying to finish my homework, but I was stuck reading the same sentence for at least an hour. I decided I should stop."

Dora leaned her cheek against her knee, smiling a little at him. "What are you up to?"

Paul did sit down next to her, and he automatically moved his arm around her shoulder, pulling Dora in close to his side. They always had been close, before and after they dated. so this wasn't anything different. "I was trying to do that too. I've got a mental block too so I stopped," he said putting his rugby ball aside.

"Me? I've just been bumming around. Can't sleep and can't work," he said with a shrug as he leaned his head near her's. And for the moment, Paul had forgotten that Dora missed his question. And then it clicked back again. "Dora... you sure you're okay?"

"I know the feeling. Sometime I just want to sleep all day." Dora sagged against Paul's body when the other wound his arm around her shoulders and pulled him close. "Maybe eat, too. Can't forget about eating. Sleep and eat, and sleep and eat..." It was impossible to fool Paul sometimes. He knew her too well for her to think he wouldn't be able to tell she was hiding something.

"Depends what you mean by okay." she told him. "I'm perfectly healthy. I ate a bowl on brownies on my own a while ago. With ice cream and chips. Though I'm not sure how healthy that is but yeah..." Dora then trailed off, her gaze returning to the fire. "Right now though, I think my heart's a bit broken. But I'm sure I'll be able to mend it on my own..."

"If only we could just go through the day, eating and sleeping," Paul said with a sigh. That would be a life he'd want to live. Well, play sports too he supposed. That could be the way for him to make his living. But that was completely off topic. "That doesn't sound too healthy to me," he said when she talked about being okay healthy wise... and then contradicted it with the food she ate.

But then the real reason came out and Paul frowned. Heart-broken? Dora didn't deserve that at all... "What the hell did Jackson do?" he asked. He knew that Jackson was the guy in Dora's life now. And any reason for Dora not being happy was suppose to be Jackson's fault... though Paul felt bad he hadn't noticed anything was wrong this that moment.

Dora laughed a little. It was a sound that tried too hard to be happy, even to her ears. "He didn't do anything." she told him, them looked down. "...isn't doing anything." It was difficult not to be honest with Paul, when she completely trusted him and in a way, wanted to tell him what was happening to her. She realized it was hard to keep things for herself for so long. "I thought we... I don't know. I thought we had... something. But he just doesn't seem to have time to hang out... to be with me. And I've come to a point where I am beginning to think that it's not meant to be. It's leaving me very sad but... it's not like I can do anything about it, you know?" A sigh. "If he doesn't want to be with me then what can I do?"

Paul was quiet while he listened to Dora waiting for her to be finished. He didn't really like Jackson much in the first place. Or maybe it was when he started hanging out with Dora... either way, he didn't like him. But her tolerated him for Dora's sake. Because he made her happy. But... Jackson wasn't doing his job.

He wrapped his arms more firmer around Dora then and pulling her into a hug. Paul wasn't a kind of guy to feel foolish about hugs and stuff like that. And he knew Dora needed one. "I don't want you to be sad," he said. "And if Jackson isn't hanging out with you... it's his own fault. And he doesn't know what he's missing."

Dora appreciated the fact that Paul held her securely, protectively against him, because as she spoke she could feel herself come undone bit by bit. It was tough to talk about it, but she knew it would be easier to accept things if she talked about it out loud. It made everything more... real. Made things final. And she needed that to be able to move on.

"Thanks." she said, when he spoke even though she'd always felt like she was the lucky one to be able to hang out with Jackson. She laid her head against his shoulder, and took one of his hands in hers. They'd always been physical sort of friends, so everything was comforting, felt familiar. "How about you? How have things been?"

Paul would always protect Dora not matter what it was or from whomever it was. Even if it was just to listen and hug her, to keep her away from the rest of the world that way. He'd always be there to do that.

"No problem," he said though Paul still wasn't sure if Dora felt better because of what he said or not. Girls were strange like that... they didn't want to show exactly what they were feeling, when they really wanted you to know. "Things have been... okay. Except I think I'm going to fail."

"Fail?" Dora echoed, her brows drawing together in confusion, as she shifted and looked up at him. "Fail at what?" If she were in a better mood, she could have made fun of him, or twist that line to mean something else, though she wasn't in the mood. What did reflect on her expression was her genuine concern over what was bugging Paul. She was very protective of him, and she didn't like seeing him this way at all. They'd been together long enough for her to see him at his best, and she hoped she could keep him that way. "You're going to fail at a subject? Is tat what you meant? Which one?"

"Fail 7th year. I mean everything seems to be alright now... but fuck, I don't know how I'm going to do on NEWTs," he said letting out an annoyed sigh. He really didn't mean to change the subject from Dora, but she probably needed a distraction anyway. "Passing OWLs seemed like a miracle, and these are meant to be harder. I'm going to be the dumb kid that gets left behind. Or kicked out of school," he said. He really didn't want that to happen. Put shame on him and the rest of the family like that. But it was still a likely possibility.

Dora gave him a disapproving look. For someone who was charming and exuded much confidence in his step, he truly needed to trust himself more when it came to academics. "None of that." she told him seriously, her hand tightening in his. "I'm not doing the best in my studies too, since I have been distracted. I just don't feel like it these days. Though what if we... study together, like we used to do?" she tried, thinking now that it didn't sound like such a bad idea. "That will motivate us, help us. What do you think? I mean I'm just suggesting things here. If you don't want to it's cool..."

Paul frowned when he saw that disapproving look from Dora. He hated to get her mad at him. Or disappointed in him. And it was true, he usually was so confidence... at least he went into everything with a carefree attitude except just to do his best. But this was their last year, and it was hard to think that way when it was something as important as NEWTs.

But he perked up at the suggestion of studying together. "We could do that," he said smiling. He didn't remember if they got a lot of work done together, but Paul did remember it was fun. "I'd really like that."

Dora's lips upturned in a smile when Paul had agreed to what she'd said. It felt good to her that she'd found someone to spend time with, maybe someone who could help her concentrate on her studies now. "Brilliant. We should start soon. Like tomorrow?" she suggested, as she stretched her arms and legs out, a yawn escaping her. "Right now, I'm a bit tired." She looked up at him, and pushed back a bit of his hair back fromhis face in an almost motherly fashion. "Are you going somewhere?"

"Yeah we can start tomorrow. As soon as possible would be the best I'd say," Paul said nodding in agreement. He laughed when he watched her yawn and stretch. And when she brushed back his hair. He pulled her close in another hug and arched an eyebrow at her question. "Where would I be going right now?" he asked in reply.

"Right as soon as possible." Dora said, easily moving into his embrace again. He was always so warm and cuddly. Like a big teddy bear. "And oh, I don't know. You're such a stud, who knows who you're about to meet in the darkness of Hogwarts' halls..." she teased, poking his side.

He laughed when she was teasing him, and he moved a bit when she poked him. "I'm not meeting up with anyone," he said laughing. And he definitely wouldn't be meeting up in the dark Hogwarts Halls. Unless that's what she'd want... "I haven't been hooking up with anyone for awhile," he admitted. He didn't even have a date for the last dance.

Dora was certainly surprised to hear his admission, for Paul was definitely one of the lookers in the higher years. She did notice he did not bring a date for the dance, though the fact only seemed to zoom into focus at that moment. "Why not?" she asked him, careful to keep her tone curious and not anything else. "Don't you... fancy anyone?"

Paul knew that a lot of girls thought he was good looking. He wasn't slow enough not to notice certain girls watching him in the course of the day. But... wasn't that just a physical thing? It seemed like only a handful of people really knew who he was. "Well... no one in particular," he said. He could argue he still fancied someone, but Paul felt that emotion would never go away. For Dora. "There hasn't been anyone new. No one... sees me."

Dora's lips pursed in a small pout at what he'd said. How could someone as charming, as sweet and amazing as Paul not have someone special in his life? She just didn't get it.

"I see you." Dora told him, sweetly smiling at him. "I know whoever you'd like is a very lucky girl." Sometimes it left her wondering why they split up in the first place, though she needed to remind herself that they both agreed on seeing other people since they were each other's firsts. "The people here just don't know who they're missing."

She stretched again, and yawned and rested more comfortably against him, laying her head against his shoulder. "I think I have to go, else I think I'd fall asleep right here." she stood and collected her things, before she turned with him with a sleepy smile. "Tomorrow, yeah? Let's meet up here, then we can study in your room? Or in the library? Whichever you want. You know I'm cool with anything." She leaned in and placed a kiss on his temple before she waved goodbye and sleepily made her way back to her dormitories...
