Sid had been waiting for them at the entrance to the casino, and after Jason had made introductions and left Kelly to his interview, he'd stolen Cara for a run. The Strip wasn't the best spot, but the locals knew to dodge the tourists and head a few blocks over where the "real" people lived. A few miles in, Jason veered off pavement onto gravel that eventually gave way to a dirt path pounded smooth by feet and paws alike, and when the two of them crested the small rise that led to the dog park proper, Cara took off at a sprint that left Jason cursing under his breath as he ran after.
The attendants watching over the self-serve dog wash were laughing by the time man and dog got to the gate, and Jason leaned over to catch his breath, hands braced on his knees, which put his mouth into dog-kissing range. "When Kelly gets back, it was a tie, you hear me?"
Laughing when Cara seemed to agree with a bark, Jason unclipped the leash as one of the attendants opened the gate and handed him a card with the rules printed on it. Cara took off to say hello and sniff the asses of the other dogs enjoying the day, and Jason found a bench nearby where he could keep an eye on Cara and the parking lot, texting Kelly the address for his GPS along with a picture of Cara dancing ecstatically with her new pack.
