Her mad brother had asked Artemis to come by again soon, for a private meeting, and she had agreed. She had gone, with only a very few of her retinue, to the forest of giant sequoias in the Sierra Nevada, to let a little time elapse before she visited Dionysus again. She would never feel at ease in his Labyrinth, and a stay in the wild was preferable, before she went back. And, even better than a simple stay, a hunt.
Her breath was quiet, barely present at all, as she stood among the trees, an arrow notched in her bow. The half-light of the dusk was no impediment to her, and she simply waited for the deer to take that one step forward that would allow her arrow to pierce his heart, and offer him a quick death. In her brown summer dress and soft suede boots, she seemed to belong to the woods as much as they belonged to her.
A branch cracked, close by, and the deer looked up, frightened, before taking off at a run. Artemis's aim shifted with his panicked gallop, and when her fingers let go of the arrow, she knew her aim would be true.
She didn't expect anyone to be there.
