WHO: Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler
WHAT: More "girl" talk. Because things aren't going as they should be, dammit.
WHEN: Mid-day.
WHERE: Rose's room
RATING: TBA
STATUS: Active

When it came to Jack Harkness, there was no such thing as 'personal' space. At least, not when your name included Rose, Ianto or Doctor. As one was decidedly missing from their group, that meant two people were being subjected to one hundred percent of pure Jack. His eyes flicked towards the Labyrinth. He was getting ready to run it and knew he had support from the two, but somehow it didn't seem right to run the Labyrinth without the Doctor.

Soon, though. Soon they'd have to. Jack was reaching the stage of restless. Yes, it was fun to lollygag at the amusement park, but he still needed to do something. Be somewhere. Do something.

And so, Jack found himself at Rose's door. Yes, he should have gone to Ianto, but Jack was running out of ideas. Even before the dating hadn't been so much dating as doing work together after hours. Jack wasn't used to having to chase after somoeone. Usually, they came to him.

With a loud knock to announce his presence, Jack opened the door without waiting for her to give him entrance. "Rooose!" Jack sang out. "Guess whooooo!"

Rose was already annoyed with this place. Give a girl her greatest dream and then snatch it away? Pretty much hell. Changing the weather on a whim? Also not exactly pleasant. But waking up and thinking out loud to herself, only to find she couldn't do so without singing? As hard as she tried, she couldn't be amused by it. Now, if she'd landed on some wonderful planet where singing was the language and the TARDIS caused her to do so? Well, that would've been different. But on this wretched planet that pulled people from different points of their lives and took them away just as quickly? Meh.

So when Jack came storming in, she didn't speak. She merely looked up at him with a nod. Who knew how long this was going to last, but Rose wasn't giving in that easily. Though it didn't surprise her at all that Jack was loving it. He'd have been good in the theater in another, more tame life.

Jack should have assumed that Rose would be in a sour disposition. As fun as the amusement park had been (and the amount of sugar he'd bribed her with over the course of the day), he knew she would be in such a mood. Hell, he really couldn't blame her. Jack could only imagine how she must feel--

No, wait, he could imagine. Easily. Even if the object of his affections was currently in the middle of being increasingly annoying. Damn him.

Entering the room further, Jack settled himself on the corner of her bed with a grin and just looked at Rose. "COme on. You can't stay close-lipped all day, you know. Be thankful it's only singing. We could be quoting theatre lyrics all day long. Or bad pop songs which, for the record, yes I know music that is post 1950, I just choose not to listen to it."

For a moment, Rose simply stared at him. Mostly because it was so weird hearing a normal conversation come out of his mouth in a rich tenor. Her first reaction was to blurt, "I didn't know you could sing". But then she remembered that it would come out of her in song, and she was not ready to deal with that. Not one bit.

So she leaned over the bed, blond hair dangling towards the floor, and dug around in the space underneath. Found it! She pulled out the spiral notebook and grabbed a pen from the dresser before sitting up completely, blood rushing out of her head and back into the rest of her body. She scribbled on the first page, 'I didn't know you could sing, let alone knew pop songs. How about some Backstreet Boys?'

Smiling up at him innocently, she capped her pen and grinned.

Jack had hoped that would get some sort of a verbal reaction out of Rose. He could sing, and quite well thank you very much. He was the Song and Dance man Gwen had called him once upon a time. Not always did he get to use those dulcet tones for good, but he was going to take advantage of it now.

Sighing when she dug out a notebook, Jack took it from her when she handed it over to him. Now, it would have been incredibly cruel of him to take the notebook and sing his response. Horribly, horribly cruel. And he would never do anything like that... oh, who was he kidding?

Shifting to his left, Jack slid the notebook under his arse and sat on it. If she wanted the notebook back, she'd have to go after him to get it. Toying with the pen between his fingertips, Jack arched a brow in her direction. "I do know them. May have slept with a couple of them, too," Jack rubbed his chin thoughtfully, cleared his throat and sang out: 'God must've spent, a little more time on you.' See? know the Backstreet Boys."

Rose glared at him. Narrowed her eyes, pouted her lower lip, crossed her arms in front of her, and glared. Arse. Well, literally, in this case. Well fine. She'd play Charades. Let him figure it out.

But as a girl raised in the nineties, she couldn't just let him get away with that! That was murder. "That's not Backstreet Boys, that's NSYNC! May as well sing Take That instead!" And then she froze. Bugger. That wasn't what she'd meant to do. There was her voice, clear and bright an annoyingy soprano, ringing out through her room as she scolded him. Glaring further, she smacked her forehead with the palm of her hand, then buried her face. "I hate you," she mumbled, though it came out as more of a purring hum.

A glare was a good reaction to get. He needed to get something out of her to make sure that she was okay and better to have a pissy Rose than a depressed Rose. Jack watched her for a moment, wondering if she'd correct his blunder. Yes, Jack knew who the Backstreet Boys were -- may have hated the music (though appreciated their harmonies), he still knew what they sang.

Just to spite her, Jack began humming 'Take Five' under his breath, scootching towards her but keeping the notebook tucked firmly under his arse. She wasn't going to get it that easily. "What do you know, she has quite the little voice. I'd call you a songbird if I didn't think I would get hit in a very painful place." Jack slid closer, dropping an arm around her shoulder. "You don't hate me."

Sighing heavily, Rose shook her head. "Nope," she agreed, dropping her head on to his shoulder. Good thing he hadn't switched into 'Back for Good' or she might have been following him around like a lost puppy. Why'd he have to be so darn comfortable.

"Was actually in the chorus in school," she admitted, giving him a playful look. "Till I convinced them all to strike and I got kicked out. Shame, too." It was still the strangest thing in the world, her voice coming out but not entirely on her own will. But she as getting used to her voice singing through the room. Sort of.

Giggling, she lifted her head and looked around in exaggeration. "Sure your boyfriend won't mind that you're here?"

Rose could threaten to hate him all she wanted, but they both knew it was a lie: Jack's advantage over her. But, at least, it wasn't something he would exploit often. Just when (in cases like this) he needed to. Jack pulled her in closer as if trying to protect her from the world. If he could? He would in a heart-beat.

"Don't see why you wanted to be kicked out," Jack intoned, looking quizically at her. "To be honest, you have quite the voice. Seems like such a shame to waste it with something like 'talking'." Jack grinned suddenly. "Though... not everyone can sound like me."

The words gave him pause and the smile immediately faded from Jack's face. "You know as well as I that he's not... my anything." Yet, Jack added silently.

As if on cue, Rose rolled her eyes at his oh-so-typical 'not everyone can sound like me'. "As if everyone would want to," she told him smugly. Arse times two. He always thought the entire world wanted to be him. Or shag him. Or possibly both. Still, she blushed at his compliment. Who wouldn't?

"Oh, really?" Rose gave his shoulders a squeeze, hiding her amusement at the drop in his voice turning his 'song' from a jazzy sound to a ballad. Oh, that Jareth, he really did need his brain checked. "You are aware you don't have to be shagging someone to be his 'something', right?" Her chin propped on his shoulder, beaming up at him. "He's interested, Jack. That much is obvious. Veeery interested."

"Come now, of course they would," Jack cheekily sang. "Who wouldn't want to be me?" He raised both eyebrows, looking at her with a grin that said he was joking. Really, he was. Well, mostly. But at least he was consistent, and one couldn't fault him for that. He sat with his arm around Rose, letting her lean against him and take whatever strength she needed from him. That was his best function.

Jack really wanted to have a couple words with Jareth one of these days and instantly his mind flicked back to getting the hell out of here -- running the Labyrinth. There were a few choice words he had to say to the man, such as 'take us home, now' only with a few more profanities interspersed.

"I know he's interested," Jack said with a shake of his head. "I think I'd know when a man was interested and when he wasn't." He turned his head to look at her, swiftly kissing the tip of her nose. "So, following your logic, does that make you my girlfriend? We're not shagging and you're obviously my... something."

"Oi!" Rose protested, but she couldn't help but giggle. In truth, what she'd needed was some quality Jack time. Ianto was sweet, and awfully tolerant of having a depressed and sniffling friend of Jack's toddling along with them. But he didn't know the Doctor. She didn't have history with him. She couldn't depend on him quite the way she could Jack.

"I'm not interested," she reminded him with a haughty tone. "I may find you attractive, I may occasionally fight the urge to snog you senseless, but I'm not interested." She added a wink for good measure, though the memory of her last bit of snogging weighed heavily on her. It hadn't been long enough for the hurt to fade. After Canary Wharf, and then again after Norway, it had taken several months before she could even function. Rose figured she was doing fairly well all things considered.

Sighing, she shook her head, looking at him sternly. "Ianto's old fashioned," she reminded him, the idea still amusing her. "He wants romance, Jack, is that so much to ask?" Personally, she found it adorable.

Oh she could protestall she wanted, but Jack knew the truth -- or, at least, his ego knew. In the end, there really wasn't much difference was there? But Jack's heart was in the right place and that was all that mattered.

"Oh sure you are," Jack said, waggling his fingers in front of Rose's nose. "And fighting the urge to snog does in deed mean that one is interested. It's a simple fact of life." That and it was hard to believe anyone wasn't interested in him, magnetic personality and all. "And Rose? I'm a fair deal more than 'attractive'. Dashing and debonaire come to mind."

This time, it was Jack's turn to sigh. "He is not old fashioned. If anyone is old fashioned, it's me who got to live through the entirety of the twentieth-century." Once again, he sighed, threading his fingers aimlessly through her hair. "Honestly?" Romance meant Jack had to admit things he wasn't ready to admit. "I didn't have to before," was all he managed to come up with.

Rose couldn't help but roll her eyes. He could be so completely intolerable, but that was also what made him impossible not to love. "Look, Captain, your spiel on your wonderfulness may work on some? And okay, sure, there may have been a time when it worked on me, but that doesn't mean everyone's just going to fall over themselves to get to you."

Thoughtfully, she considered the man she'd met the day before. She leaned against Jack's arm as she considered him. He was old-fashioned, even if Jack was moreso. And he was sweet. He deserved more than a good time. "I guess the question I'd have to ask you, then, is...well, are you interested? And I don't mean in throwing him up against the wall for a good shag, I mean seriously interested."

She bit her lower lip, worrying it between her teeth as she considered what to say. It reminded her vaguely of long nights spent with Shareen discussing ways to win the men in their lives over. Too bad that had included Jimmy Stone. "He's not the sort you screw around with, Jack. You have to mean it. You can't shag him one moment then turn around and go feel up the next vampire or werewolf that comes along." A flicker of a grin crossed her face. "And here, you can do that."

It was only those who Jack truly loved who ended up getting the full brunt of Jack's personality. And if he couldn't be himself around Rose, who could he? Still, he flashed her one of his ever-famous grins and ruffled her hair as if she were a small child. "Oh don't play coy with me, Rose Tyler," Jack replied with a wink and a smile. "And they usually are. It isn't my fault if the charm just oozes." He paused briefly. "Before you think it, no comments about me and things that ooze. Got it?"

Rose grew silent and Jack began to both wonder and worry as to what was going through that pretty little head of hers. That long of a pause meant she was coming up with something and Jack should have changed subjects when he had the chance. "What do you mean am I interested? Of course I'm interested," Jack said with a wave of his hand. The smile on his face faded, though, knowing that the flip answer wasn't going to satisfy her one iota.

"I... I know he's not," Jack said, shifting his glance away from Rose to stare at the floor. Ianto was the sort of man one kept, not used as a stepping stone. "Yes, around here you can do that. Easily. Knock on a neighbour's door and who knows what you'll run into next?" The smile hadn't quite come back to Jack's face, though he distracted himself with watching the blonde strands of Rose's hair fall around his fingers. "Rose, do you think I don't know all that?" He asked. "I know he's not the sort to fuck around with.I'm quite, quite aware of that fact."

"Are you?" she questioned, looking up at him curiously. Not that she didn't trust him. As a friend, at least. But would she put her romantic future in this man's hands? That was a little less likely.

"How well does he know you?" Rose asked, considering. "Because honestly, Jack? I sure as hell wouldn't let you try and wine and dine me knowing your history. Come on, he thought I was one of your...what was the word? Conquests? Jailbait? Whatever, it wasn't pretty."

And she couldn't blame the poor man. Ianto wanted someone to give a damn. Was that so much to ask? To have someone take care of you when they said they were going to and to love you the way they said they would? Rose's face darkened slightly, but she lookedat him imploringly. "You need him. I honestly think that. And being cocky and egotistical? Isn't really going to win you this one."

Was he interested? After travelling with the Doctor for the second time, it had taken less than twelve hours for Jack to ask Ianto out on a date -- though it had taken him close to a year to work up the courage to ask him out in the first place. Yes, Jack was interested -- it was getting past the implications of everything that was the problem. Resting his cheek against the top of her head, Jack finally nodded in response. "I am," he said softly.

God, now that was a loaded question if ever he heard one. "He knows me... as well as anyone else does." Which was, safe to say, not well at all. "Well, you are my type," Jack teased. "Didn't help that I all but ran to your aid after we... well..." Flashing her a grin, there was no escaping Jack's meaning there. And as much as Jack wanted to say he was just fine on his own, he knew he needed Ianto. "Only problem being that cocky and egotistical are my default positions. If I was anything but, you lot would think there was something wrong with me."

A smile crossed her face and she nestled just that much closer. Being with Jack and letting him soothe her reminded her of how much she missed Mickey. With the Doctor gone, she found herself drifting into homesickness more and more often. Having Jack at least countered a fair bit of that.

She reached down, taking one of his hands between both of hers. "You see, that's the problem. Jack... You have to let down that guard. Otherwise, he's going to always think it's just sex. And if it's not...he needs to be able to see that." She was smiling, even though she knew the conversation was a tough one on him. Physically, Jack was one of the strongest people she knew. Emotionally? He'd been to the end of the world and back and had taken several beatings along the way. His body might've been invincible, but that heart of his? Probably wasn't.

"Be vulnerable, Jack," Rose added quietly, glancing up at him. "For once in your incredibly long life, just let go. Let him see the you that I do."

Somehow, Jack managed to make more room for Rose, settling down and drawing her in against his body. And with Rose, though he may endlessly tease her about their "potential for a relationship" he knew where each of their hearts lay. It was why it was so easy to cuddle with her like this and know there was nothing going on between them (though Jack certainly wouldn't turn her down either).

"I did once," Jack replied, tightening his grip on Rose ever so slightly. "Right after I came back, when I saw the Doctor again, I asked him on a date. A real, honest to god date. Apparently, though, that's when our timelines shift. I took him out -- but he doesn't know we did it." And god, the first one had been hard enough. Jack didn't like admitting he had weaknesses or, for that matter, admitting he needed another person in that way. Jack was a survivor first and foremost.

"Got a Chula warship around?" Jack asked with a laugh. "And a few bombs. That'll be the only way." He shook his head sadly, words coming out before he could stop them, showing Rose the ultimate vulnerable side of Jack. "I don't know if I can, rose. I honestly don't know if I have it in me."

The truth was, there'd been a time Rose would've loved for Captain Jack Harkness to have been the man in her life. But even then, they'd all known she belonged to someone else. And apparently she always would. Instead of moving on with her life, she'd fought tooth and nail to get back to him. And now she was back where she started. Only this time, she had Jack.

"You realise you've solved your own problem," Rose pointed out with a hint of a smirk. "Ask him out on a date. 'A real, honest to god date'. And I don't mean on the Tilt-a-Barf at the adventure park thingie." Idly, her fingers played with his, toying with them as she thought. "Even if it's just candles and dinner in your room. Actually, no," she protested, thinking quickly. "Nowhere with a bed. Kinda defeats the 'this isn't about sex' purpose."

Her cheek nestled lightly into the fabric of his shirt and she shrugged. "Dance with him. Tell him how he makes you feel. And no, horny is not an option," she scolded quickly.

And, if they were being honest through the medium of interiour monologue, Rose was a woman Jack could have been exceedingly happy with as well. But even a blind man could have seen the connection that existed between Rose and the Doctor -- even if it had been Nine that Jack saw her interact with. There had been something between the two and Jack knew not to meddle -- even if he was gone, he still wouldn't try to fill that void beyond a playful kiss or a cuddle. That would forever be Jack's role where Rose was concerned, and he was content.

Jack turned his hand over, letting her fingertips play over his skin. "There's nothing wrong with the Tilt-a-Whirl," Jack replied with a huff. "I'll have you know that our first 'date' wound up chasing a pack of Weevils across a car park." Not much had happened by way of dates byond that.

Kissing the top of her head, Jack sighed. "I have... danced with him that is." Jack quickly held up a hand. "And not going by the Doctor's definition of dancing either." Jack stared off into spacke, his thumb running along the back of her knuckles. "Gwen's wedding. He cut in on us and we danced."

Even the bloke in the leather jacket and big ears had been a huge part of Rose's life. She had fallen in love with the silly bloke whether either of them had known it or not. After his regeneration, Mickey had asked her such. Rose hadn't been able to say it then, but Mickey knew her better than most. Of course he'd been right. It only made sense that perceptive Jack had picked up on that as well.

"Weevils? Seriously? How romantic, really." She shook her head, a grin crossing her face despite herself. "Not that I'm one to talk. Still..." Shrugging, she pulled away a bit, but didn't disentangle her hand from his. Instead, she looked down at it, examining the lines as if she were a skilled palmreader.

"Short romantic line here, Jack," she informed him, pointing at the shortest line of all. Couldn't be his life line, she knew that much. Though the real...original...well, younger Jack had died relatively young. "Does he remember any of that? The first date, the dancing, and hey, who's Gwen?"

Oh they would get b ack to the original topic -- which was supposed to be how Rose was doing following the Doctor's disappearance. Getting into the nitty gritty about was (or, rather, wasn't) happening between himself and Ianto wasn't quite on the original game plan. But Jack had seen, and it was a wonder why Mickey hadn't figured it out. Then again, Jack's opinion of Mickey was just above Rift flotsam.

"Seriously. Not my fault they roam the streets of Cardiff and we have to round 'em up like cattle." Jack looked at her and just smiled. "The lot of us -- I think somewhere along the line we lost what "normal date" really was. When running from danger is the inherent definition of a good time, there may be something wrong." Not that he would ever complain about his line of work.

Jack followed her description with his eyes, snorting at the short romantic line. "Yes, but just remember, Rose-love: it's not the size that counts... it's how you use it." Jack shook his head. "He knows nothing. We were taken from two completely different points in time. All he remembers is that I asked him on a date but nothing that came after." Or the few near-confessions contained therein. "Gwen?" Jack's face broke into a grin. "Ah Gwen. Our police liason. I guess you could say she was at the wrong place at the right time. One of the first people level six retcon didn't work on."

"Retcon?" She was starting to sound like a broken record. "You know, one day I'm going to sit you down and make you tell me all about Torchwood 3 in detail. One day when we're not singing, that is." Her nose wrinkled at the reminder that she had just given him a romantic telling off in a mezzo-soprano. Scary that as long as they'd been talking she'd almost gotten used to it. "We don't have one in my dimension. Cardiff, I mean. I mean, we have Cardiff the city, just not a Torchwood there."

Shaking her head, she grinned. "But that's besides the point. The point is, he doesn't know you've had those great romantic adorable moments. And you get a chance almost no one does. You get to relive those sorts of things. And since you've pounced him back in your world, you know he's into it. You know the things he likes and what he doesn't and what makes him happy. May as well use it to your advantage."

Seemed like he got to give this speech often. "Nothing more than an amnesia pill. My own recipie with a touch of denial and a dash of retcon. Usually works best when mixed with alcohol." Chuckling, Jack lightly tapped her nose with his free hand. "Oh, I don't know, I don't mind making you talk if this is what you sound like as a result. The lady does have a very pretty voice." Yes, Jack was laying it on thick. So sue him. "Was going to say -- I'd hope you'd have a Cardiff in your dimension. May not be the greatest place on the earth, but it's been home long enough that I'd miss it if it were gone."

Jack was having enough of the 'beside the points'. "I've told him that we have, but he doesn't believe me. I'm fairly certain he thinks it's nothing more than a vast conspiracy to get into his trousers all the sooner." A quirked grin passed over Jack's face, a look that in some circles may have been called leering. "Oh, I've already proven I know what he likes," Jack replied. "At the time, he wasn't complaining either." The smile faded and Jack fought the urge to fall back into that sad headspace. "Romance is easy. It's directing it at one person without feeling like a damned fool that's hard."

What else could she do? Rose smacked her forehead with the palm of her hand, then hid her face behind her fingers so he couldn't see the amusement begging to show on her face. "You didn't try and seduce him already, did you?" she all but whined. "Jaaaack! That's not what I mean!"

Pansexual or not, Jack still didn't get it. Why was it always men? Even men who were into men! And not that Ianto was a woman or anything, but he still deserved to be treated with a little romance here and there. As dashing and charming as Jack claimed to be, he needed to learn not to do so with everything that walked. And, she feared, some things that didn't.

"Jack... You know I love you, right? And I say this out of the kindness of my heart. You want him? You have to earn him. Not win him, he's not some prize. You've got to prove your worthy. And I don't just mean sexually. You know who he is as a person, not just a bed partner. Use it!" God, it really was like attempting to talk to Shareen all over again. Only Shareen had never been as pretty on the eyes as Jack was. Cute girl, not no blue-eyed, dimple-grinned beauty.

Why was it Rose had the ability to make him feel like a damned idiot? Well, the Doctor could too but as he wasn't here right now, Rose was the winner. He ignored the facepalm, sniffing haughtily. "I'll have you know that no, I didn't try anything. All I did was pounce in a purely excited way before taking him to come get you for the amusement park." Jack paused, unable to stop the grin from spreading across his face. "If other things came about due to a mutual accord, they were unplanned."

No, Jack understood all too well and that was his problem. Because he was stuck with the reputation, it was hard to justify the notion of 'settling down' with anyone and the romance that went along with it. "Do you think I don't know all that?" he snapped. Sighing, Jack drew in a deep breath, holding up a hand by way of apology. "Rose, it's because I do know who he is that I know I don't bloody deserve him."

That little declaration made her take pause. Rose studied him carefully, pulling her feet beneath her so she was sitting cross-legged. She turned to face him, dropping her elbows to her knees an her head into her hands. And for a long moment, she merely watched him.

"I think you do," she said quietly a few moments later. "I think you're absolutely brilliant. He knows it, too. All he's asking is for you to show you care." Tilting her head, she studied his face before sitting up straight. Rose reached up, touching his cheek gently. "You listen and you listen good, Jack Harkness. You've saved this world more times than I care to count. Well...maybe not this one," she added a second later with an annoyed expression. "But anyway. You've been a hero several times over. But more than that, you give a damn. About him, abou the rest of your team, about me and...and the Doctor," she added after a deep breath. "All the people whose lives you touch? You mean everything to them. And that person deserves to be loved."

It was an incredibly long speech for someone who'd barely been able to squeak out a word without sobbing the last couple of days. Rose exhaled, leaning back on her hands.
