Lunchtime
Who: Josephine ot anyone
Where: a small outdoor cafe
When: Afternoon, mid-August

Josephine sat at one of her favorite cafes, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine as she ate. Dining outdoors was an acquired taste - some people preferred the inside tables, but unless it was too windy, she liked to watch the people pass by as she ate and to feed little bits of sandwich to any passing birds.

Things were going fairly well for her now - the hospital was in good supply again, though hours were still occasionally long when a shift was shorthanded. Not many serious injuries had occurred lately, and there were no outbreaks of any sort with the weather being so pleasant.

Furthermore, she had friends outside of work now, people with whom to be social. That was nice. She remembered fondly the dinner party she'd been invited to only last month, with the American singer and her strange cat. She wondered if Jackie was playing anywhere good these days - it might be time to catch another show.

Gretchen was really enjoying Paris so far. Of course, to do this, she had to push darker thoughts out of her head like the fact that her people had invaded this country, but she tried to think more happy thoughts than that. She was really enjoying that she could eat outside in little cafes now. She was doing it whenever she could afford to, usually for lunch or maybe a light dinner before heading home.

She watched as people passed by, going about their business. She couldn't help but wonder what the city was like when it wasn't under occupation, but that wasn't really for her to think about, was it?

Josephine noticed a young girl around her own age or maybe a bit younger, and smiled in her direction. She seemed nice.

"Good afternoon," she said.

Gretchen looked up at the good who said good afternoon to her. "Good afternoon to you as well," she replied. "It's a lovely day, isn't it?"

"Yes, very pretty," Josephine said. She could tell from the woman's accent that she wasn't from Paris- a German, perhaps?

"Not as warm as some days have been lately."

Gretchen's French had become good, but her German accent still came out when she spoke it. "The days have been a bit warm lately. I'm not very used to humidity."

"Is it usually cooler in Germany?" Josephine asked curiously, not minding that the woman was from there.

"A little bit," Gretchen admitted. "It does get much colder in the winters, and the summers are a little cooler as well." She was relieved that the woman wasn't holding it too much against her that she was German. Not everyone was so polite.
