Evening at The Black Death Tavern
Who: Victoire & OPEN
What: Night at Work
Where: The Black Death Tavern
When: Current

Glasses clinked, men laughed, women whispered. It was a typical night. The tavern was almost full, but not quite. The costumers were calm and entertained, and the girls who were downstairs were doing a good job of tending both bar and patron. It was a good and uneventful night. Fancy enjoyed these nights. Simple and easy.

"Victoire, bring me a few more bottles of whisky from the storeroom, we're running low." she ordered.

Victoire nodded and headed to the room Fancy had mentioned, choosing a couple of bottles from the back of the shelf. She liked to shuffle them about -- for some reason, she felt bad for the bottles stuck in the back that would serve to gather dust and always be placed behind newer bottles. Victoire dusted off the bottles before heading back to the bar.

"There we are," she said, putting them in their place. "Is there anything else you'd like me to do?" She directed her question to Fancy. "It's been running rather smoothly."

Anton walked in to the Black Death, having heard that it was a good place to have a drink. He took a look around the room, and smiled as he saw the lady behind the bar- he recalled talking to her once before.

"Good evening," he said, his French much improved from the last time they spoke. "Do you happen to have schnapps?"

Victoire remembered the man. The somewhat shy, rather handsome blonde German she had met in the park writing a postcard to his sister. She returned the smile. At work, it didn't matter whether or not she liked someone, she was supposed to be smiling and sexy and appealing (unless, of course, clients overstepped their bounds -- but that was another matter entirely). Though Victoire didn't really have a problem with Anton, aside from the fact that he was a German soldier.

"Hello," she replied, noting his improvement. "Your French is much better!" The woman pulled out a glass and a bottle of schnapps for him. "And how are you this evening?"

"I have been practicing," Anton said, smiling as he paid for his drink (including a tip).

"Ah, and as to how I am- somewhat troubled, I admit. Isn't that the reason drinking usually starts?" He gave a small laugh at his own logic.

Victoire put the money for the drink in the till and took the tip for herself, stowing it in the money clip she kept tucked safely in her garter.

"I'm sorry to hear you're having a bit of trouble -- Anton, was it?" she asked, leaning on her elbows against the dark wood of the bar. "I'm all ears if you feel like talking."

"A letter from home," Anton said glumly. "My father was discharged from his position at the university, and my mother's been having some problems..."

He sighed and took another sip of his drink.

Victoire couldn't help but feel a surge of anger -- losing a job, while still unfortunate, is nothing compared to losing a family member. But Victoire ignored the sudden rage that had flared up and put her concentration back on her customer.

"I'm sorry to hear that, mon cher." Victoire reached across the bar and patted Anton's hand. She was in work mode, and it was something she did without thinking about it. "We don't have to talk about it if you don't want to." She gave him a sympathetic smile.

"No, it's okay... I want to talk about it," Anton said. Maybe here was the only place he could talk about it, considering.

Still, he lowered his voice when he spoke about it. "My father was fired for being suspected of anti-Reich activities - because he has an English wife, and because he encouraged students to question some policies of the government in a debate forum..."

It made him very upset to think of his father's good name being tarnished because of such things.

Victoire leaned forward a bit to hear the story. She was slightly taken aback by the circumstances of his father's release. Anti-Reich activities? And his mother was British. That seemed an odd family, that: a German father not blindly accepting the Nazi policies, a wife of English nationality, and a son in the German army. Maybe there was more than just black and white.

"I'm sorry to hear that your father is being punished for bravery and thinking for his own," the redhead replied earnestly. "But I would rather take the risk and not be a blind follower rather than taking in everything I was being spoon fed." She immediately regretted her words, forgetting herself for a moment. But then again, Anton didn't seem like the type to snitch, especially because of what was happening with his own family because of the Third Reich. "Do you think your father is brave, Anton?"

Anton nodded, and smiled a wistful smile thinking of his family. "Very brave," Anton said. "Both my parents are - they're good people. They've taught me a lot..."

He frowned slightly. "I just worry how they'll eat without my father's salary - everything is so expensive now at home with the war. I want to start sending money back for them, but I worry - would that be insulting to my father? Do you think he'll understand that I want to help, and that I'm not saying he cannot support his family?"

"That would be difficult for me to answer without truly knowing your father," Victoire replied, pouring herself a drink. "Perhaps if you sent a note along with the money explaining your motive, he won't be as quick to be offended." She recalled her own father, who would have been very stubborn and incredibly insulted if she had tried to support him after he lost his job. But not everyone was a stubborn Parisian.

"Besides, with a war on, people have started doing things you never expected of them. I hope your troubles won't linger and that things will be better for your family soon." She gave the man a small smile.

"Ah true- I should at least try," Anton said. "I would send the money to my mother instead, but I worry that might insult him more."

Father was proud, but not stupid- he had to trust that his parents would accept the money. Especially with Hannah to take care of.

"Thank you, Victoire - tell me, is it the bartending that makes you so good with people?"

She always seemed to know just what to say. He remembered that from their first meeting.

Victoire smiled. "I don't think it's the bartending, mon cher," she replied. Did Anton know what sort of place he was in? True, many people only came for a drink or two, but most people, if not all of them, knew what the Black Death Tavern really was. He seemed to be such an innocent young man; what was he doing involved in Hitler's army? Maybe he didn't have a choice, Victoire didn't know -- she had never been to Germany -- but she found herself beginning to like the man regardless of his associations.

"But you came here to have a good time, no? How about a dance then?"

Anton smiled, a bit surprised that she'd want to dance with him. She seemed older and somehow more sophisticated than he was - he didn't think she'd have much interest in a guy like him. But he was pleasantly surprised by the invitation.

"I'd love to - thank you. Just don't mind if I'm a bit rusty- I've done much more marching than dancing lately."

He set down his glass, stood up and offered her his arm politely to escort her towards the dance floor.

Victoire came round the bar and took Anton's offered arm. "Don't worry, I'm sure you'll do just fine." Once they were on the dance floor, she placed her free hand on his shoulder and smiled reassuringly. The song switched to an upbeat Glenn Miller number. Victoire loved to dance, and she was glad to have a dance partner who wasn't repulsive for once.

"Would you like me to lead?" she asked, hoping he wouldn't be offended by the question.

Anton blushed slightly at that, but nodded his agreement. "Yes, thank you..."

He didn't mind so much, but hoped she didn't think he was entirely inexperienced. Not that dancing was a metaphor for life, but...

He placed his hands in the proper positions, and waited for her to take the lead.

She noticed the slight blush, pleased. Victoire moved easily with the music, leading gently (after all, it was part of her profession to make customers feel manly and strong). She remained silent for a time, enjoying the song.

"You're not a bad dancer at all, monsieur," she finally said. "In fact, you're a welcome breath of fresh air from the customers I normally have to deal with. Much kinder and far easier to look at." Victoire gave a small grin before twirling out into a spin and turning back in, resting her hand back on her partner's chest.

"Do bartenders normally have to dance with their customers in Paris?" Anton asked, thinking that a rather strange custom. But from how she was speaking, he took it to mean that she danced with many of the men who came into the bar.

"And I do thank you for the compliment."

Victoire couldn't help but give a light laugh. "The Black Death isn't just a bar, love." They continued the dance until the song drew to a close. She was a bit out of breath, but that's only because she was actually enjoying herself for once.

"What do you say, mon cher, another drink? And perhaps we won't stop at one!" She gave him a coy smile before heading back to the bar and pouring a couple more drinks. "Over here, it's more comfortable." There was a small red sofa against one of the walls and Victoire perched herself on the edge before lighting up a cigarette. She started to offer one to Anton before she remembered their first meeting. "Oh, right, never got into the habit. Are you forgetting your worries yet?"

Anton pondered her meaning when she said the Black Death wasn't just a bar. Was it a dance hall, where men paid to dance with pretty ladies? Was he supposed to offer her money for their dance?

He settled with her on the sofa, and took the offered drink. "Thank you," he said. "I am feeling much better... but tell me, do I owe you anything? The drink, the dance... you are being so kind."

"The dance was my pleasure, and though I don't think Fancy would appreciate me giving away free drinks, this one's on the house." Victoire took a sip of her drink. "If I am being kind, it's only because I'm in good company." She smiled. It had never occurred to the redhead to try and convince Anton to purchase a night of company. He seemed so young, though he couldn't be much younger than she, and it would probably be very easy to get a good amount of money out of him. Though Victoire would normally be trying her best to make as much money as possible, she actually found she didn't mind sitting here and talking for now.

"I'm glad you're feeling better, though. That means I'm doing my job." She was quiet for a moment. "Tell me, how are you finding Paris?"

"I find Paris beautiful, if lonely," Anton answered honestly.

"Though more lovely and less lonely in your presence, certainly..."

He meant the words sincerely, and hoped they didn't strike her as idle flattery. He enjoyed her company.

Fancy missed replying to Victoire as the girl went off to tend to a costumer. Exactly as she was supposed to do, the girl was a hard working and skilled employee, and Fancy was glad to have her.

Fancy turned her attention back to the bar and the drinks she needed to pour. She thought about the young allied pilot still hidden away upstairs and wondered how long he would be so. Where was her friend Marie with those papers? Or had it all been a mistake and the German army was just buying their time till they came and snatched him away from her.

From you? Oh now that is a dangerous thought. Fancy knew she had grown overly attached to Charlie and knew it was a foolish thing to do. She chalked it up to her lonely and empty life but it didn't help solve the problem either. She would need time. His French was improving. She'd invited him to come downstairs for a drink one night to practice. She couldn't force him of course, it was all a matter of nerve. But soon, no doubt, when he tired of his captivity he would begin to venture out. And once he had his falsified papers....well that would be it wouldn't it? He would go off with Marie and her band of Resistance fighters to end the war and save the world. And she would remain here, empty and alone. Some moments there wasn't enough liquor in the world.

She poured herself a shot of something strong and drank it in a single swallow; closing her eyes and putting a finger to her lips as the liquid burned it's way down her throat. She re-opened her eyes and looked over her shoulder as she heard the bell on the front door tingle once again. She looked in anticipation for a distraction from herself.

Marie walked in to the now familiar tavern, and headed straight for Fancy. She gave the woman a bright smile, and made with the pleasantries before she could discuss the more important matters at hand.

"My dear, how are you? I trust your business is good."

Charlie sat at the top of the stairs, leaning against the wall with his legs outstretched across the hall, out of sight, but not out of earshot. He listened to the noise of the bar, the voices and clinking glasses and bottles. He let the voices wash over him, picking out words here and there, until he heard a familiar one.

He shifted a little closer to the edge of the stair and leaned over, straining to focus a bit more on the voices nearest to the bar.

Fancy smiled at her friend. She was truly glad to see her, even if she knew what her arrival tonight might mean.

"Yes it is, thank you. I hope yours is the same, I regret not having a chance to stop in this week, I've been busy." Fancy put her glass under the counter in a tub of dirty glasses.

"Can I offer you something to drink?"

"Ah, no thank you- not tonight, my dear. I can only stay a minute- long enough to tell you that you should bring our mutual friend my shop next week, in the late evening on the 15th... is this good for you? I have made arrangements for the photographer to come then..."

Marie kept her voice low, and smiled as if they were discussing an ordinary matter of having a photograph taken. Of course, it would be the photograph for Charlie's papers - the last step in their plan to hide him in plain sight.

Fancy took a tag and wiped down the bar, not meeting Marie's eyes while she spoke.

"Oui," Fancy agreed, looking up with a smile that did not reach her eyes. "The 15th is fine, we'll be there."
