Current mood: awake

French Lesson
Who: Charlie, Open
What: French Lesson
Where: The Black Death Tavern - Fancy's bedroom
When: Current

The last person Fancy had taught French to was an infant who didn't know any language at all. She figured teaching a grown man was going to be far more challenging. Still, despite the age difference, she thought it prudent to start the same way. Simply. She was awake before Charlie, a rarity in and of itself, had bathed and dressed. Normally she would've spent as much of the day as she could in her nightgown to help manage the heat. But such a thing she did not doubt would upset Charlie's sensitive nature and distract him from his language lesson.

She had brought in and set up breakfast on the table before waking Charlie. She sat on the side of the bed and reached out to gently shake his shoulder. "Réveillez-vous, il est l'heure pour le déjeuner."

He awoke slowly, blinking as the light hit his eyes. He looked at Fancy as she spoke, recognizing bits and pieces of it. He nodded, sitting up and swinging his legs over the edge of the bed.

"Aller avec la méthode d'immersion?"

Fancy continued to smile softly at Charlie and gave him time to fully wake himself up. He was a handsome man, more so in his sleep when he relaxed and upon first waking when his attractive dark eyes first opened. As Fancy was usually the latter to rise she didn't get to see this sight often and enjoyed it while she can, letting her eyes roam over him gently, affectionately. It was something she usually tried to avoid doing with him, as he seemed to be sensitive to it but she thought he might not notice this time.

She stood and took a step back from the bed, waiting for him to sit up before sitting back down beside him. She listened to the tinkling sound of his dogs tags, and wondered what they said and why there were two of them. Fancy knew very little about the military, especially the American one. She wondered if she was related to any. She knew nothing about her father, certinally even less of his family.

"Oui, vous apprendrez plus rapidement de cette façon"

He nodded, and sat up straight, stretching out his shoulders a bit. They were still a little sore from the crash.

"Quels sont les plans pour aujourd'hui? De que devrions-nous parler?"

"J'ai pensé que nous commencerions avec petit déjeuner. Nommer des objets, parties du corps. Donnant et recevant des directions. Je veux découvrir que combien vous savez et nous irons de là."

She reached out to stroke his sleep mused hair, which was sticking out in all sorts of silly directions.

"Comment allez-vous sentant ce matin?"

He nodded, catching a few words. He didn't move as she smoothed his hair.

"A little.... douloureux. Les contusions sont profondes."

Fancy frowned slightly in pity of Charlie and all that he'd been through. She crawled back on the bed to kneel behind him so she could massage his shoulders.

"Are you sure you do not want to see a doctor?" Fancy asked in English and she tried to work the muscles in his shoulders loose.

He shook his head.

"Non, ils partiront dans le temps. Je serai bien."

Fancy leaned in to kiss the back of his head and was quiet for a time.

"You moan in your sleep. Do you remember your nightmares?" she didn't think that she should be continuing to speak to Charlie in French, all she could think about was that horrible crash and how terrified and traumatized he must have been and still likely was.

He sighed. He didn't want to talk about the crash. He stood and turned.

"I remember the flak going through the wing and taking out an engine, I remember knowing I was going to crash. I remember knowing that Mac and Johnson were dead before we hit the ground. I remember waking up... and training kicking in. It's war - I can't let it get to me. Not yet. I still have a job to do, regardless of where I am." He stepped forward, and reached up to nudge her chin up a little higher. "Dreams won't hurt me. I'll be fine."

Fancy sat back on her heels as Charlie stood, her hands sliding down his back to rest in her lap. She knew what him pulling away from her meant. Knew the walls he was trying to build within himself. Knew how hard he was trying not to remember things. Because you do it too.

She stared deep into Charlie's eyes and tried to imagine it all in her mind. Squeezed them tightly shut for a moment as if she thought that seeing them clearly could take away some of it for him.

She opened them again and started to shake her head no, when he spoke of still having a job to do, but his fingertips on her chin stalled her sentiment. She couldn't remember him ever touching her before, no purposefully, not deliberately. She was surprised and slightly awed by the newness of it. She let him raise her face up without resistance.

"Charlie," she whispered, her eyes moist with the memories of her own pains. "do you say that for me? Or are you young and naive enough not to know what being haunted by something can do to you if you only swallow it down?"

He sighed, not understanding why she was crying.

"I'm not in the habit of saying things just to make someone feel better." He paused, trying to decide on his next words. "I was raised to think that whatever happens, happens, and dwelling on it isn't going to make anything better. The crash happened. I'm not going to dwell on it and allow it to dictate my every move and control my thoughts. I don't see the point. I'm not naive, I'm practical."

Fancy scoffed at that. Practical What did that really mean anyway? She couldn't stop seeing that house, that open door, that emptiness. Over, it was all over. Again and again. A never ending cycle of death. No rebirth, just death.

"Charlie," she pleaded hoarsely, reaching up to take his hand "whatever debt or duty you had you've paid. Go home. Go home and live a life, a good life while you still have the chance."

Charlie stared at her for a moment, not noticing when she took his hand.

"I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing anymore..." he mumbled. He shook his head, then spoke clearly. "I signed a contract, and I intend to see it through. I am in this until the end, be it my end or the war's end."

He smiled softly. "Besides, I promised my father I'd make it home. He's not going to outlive his son, not in this life."

"A contract?" Fancy shook her head in dismay. "Oh Charlie, you're so much better than this. This place, this war. If you truly want to forget than you should. You should go home and forget all about this terrible nightmare you've been living. You should fall in love, and get married, and have babies."

She smiled slightly, thinking of the better life Charlie could have. "Go back to being a mechanic and live a better life than this. Go home Charlie, live while you still can. Make the right decisions while you're still young and strong enough to see them through."

He shook his head.

"I don't go back on my word. I signed up, I volunteered to come over here, the US isn't even in the war yet. I'm in this, for better or worse, and I'm not a deserter."

He stepped back.

"Vous n'allez pas changer d'avis, ainsi vous pourriez aussi bien m'aider."

Fancy sighed and squeezed his hand slightly. She didn't know what else to say. The view of life was so different on the way out then on the way in. What she wouldn't give...

"I will." she assured him.

He nodded, still unsure of exactly that conversation came to pass.

"So... what now?"

Fancy stroked his hand with her own softly. She let her mind wonder. Wonder what would have happened if her life had taken a different turn. There were so many possibilities looking back now. She had never seen them then.

Charlie's words pulled her out of her daydreaming and she blushed and glanced away. She let go of his and and stood, heading over to the table where their breakfast lay.

"Est-ce que je peux vous verser du café?"

Fancy smiled and handed him his cup. She knew how Charlie liked his coffee, she had only asked out of politeness and for his practicing benefit. She poured her own cup and took her seat at the table.

"J'ai trouvé quelques livres pour vous, ceux que j'avais l'habitude d'enseigner à ma fille quand elle était petite. Bien que maintenant je pense qui peut être à simple pour vous. Est-ce que, Charlie, combien de Français vous me dit sait?"

He didn't answer right away, trying to piece together what she said.

"Pas beaucoup... Just what I could pick up while j'ai voyagé. Aucun des agriculteurs a su l'anglais." He felt bad sticking some English in there... but he didn't know the words.

"Non, je penserais pas." Fancy said, stirring sugar and cream into her coffee. She smiled slightly at Charlie pieced together explanation. For some reason it seemed quite adorable to her eyes.

"Cette votre première fois est-il en France?"
