Fancy smiled at the gentleman across from her as he stood and moved over so as to be able to lean down and kiss her cheek. He also took her hand, that was where the money was exchanged. And a good deal of it two. Two girls for an entire evening, herself included, the opera, dinner, drinks, the hotel bill, pay for the girls fare back the next morning, the tab for this little meeting to arrange things; it was a lot of money, even for him. But for a man wanting to schmooze an out of town investor Fancy's services were more than worth the expense. She'd built and kept her business through her reputation, which was very good indeed. He said his goodbyes and was off. Fancy stayed behind and lingered over her drink. She had no other pressing engagements in town today.

Lysander watched the exchange, waiting for the gentleman to leave. Smoothly, he lifted his drink and moved to sit beside her. "Pardon, Madamosiel, but I notice you have an empty seat," He offered his most charming smile. "Perhaps you may allow me to cure its vacancy?" he moved into the seat beside her, placing his drink next to hers. "Abraham Lisburne," he introduced himself, lying about his name not sure if he was going to rob her, or get to know her.

Fancy had tucked away most of her money down the front of her dress and put only a small amount in her handbag. She always thought it was safer that way. Her handbag laid on her lap she raised her head to meet eyes with the stranger who had approached her. She smiled a sly smile at him, finding his line mildly appealing.

"Indeed I will." she responded, inviting him to join her. "Please to meet you Monsieur Lisburne. I am Fancy LaMorne."

"Enchanted," he reached for her hand, brushing his lips against her middle knuckel in a formal greeting. He was aiming for flattery. "Now that your chair has been cured of its aliment; we might move onto what others might call 'polite conversation' between two strangers?" he lifted his eyebrow in invintation.

Fancy offered her hand to the stranger without resistance. She smiled a smile as practiced as flattery.

"What shall we start with then?" she questioned. "The weather or the war?"

"Both topics are so droll," Lysander said gesticulating. "The weather is common knowledge, famous for killing conversation. Which would leave us with the war. But see, that too is a droll subject, for its curse hangs over us all," he sighed, distraught. "No my dear, I suggest we contemplate other more birghter subjects, like flowers? Or cats, maybe even the fleabitten dog?" his eyes lit up, trying to sell such an absurd measure of logic. Then suddenly he dropped his act and picked up his drink. "I think I have developed a fondness for crepes, what about you?" He asked casually as if he had never said his brief speech.

Fancy listened to him with a knowing smile.

"I think you don't deserve to call yourself French if you don't have a fondness for crepes." she answered. "Though I prefer dessert to dinner myself. Best part of the meal."

"I don't recall refering to myself as French, madamoseille." Lysander said picking up a drink. "I think I prefer dinner to dessert. I'm afraid I prefer savory to sweet,"

"Still, I like a man who knows what he wants. Even if he is a foreigner." Fancy smiled politely.

"Indeed." Fancy agreed, taking a sip of her own drink. She said nothing else, giving the man the oppertunity to steer the course of the conversation.

Lysander lifted an eyebrow. "So I take it you're not very conversational?" He observed. "It's funny how women are capable of destroying a conversation with a look, or tone, or even just one word," He observed. "But women, as I've come to learn are a speices all to themselves. Should have their own binomial if you ask me,"

"Hmmm, we are ccertainly two very different creatures I'll give you that." Fancy agreed. "And I wasn't trying to destroy the conversation, merely leaving you an opening to take the lead. If you'd like that. But if you'd rather I take the lead..." She left the statement open to interpretation.

"I've often obsereved that this war is comprarable to the Trojain war. Only Germany was insulted from the last war, and there is no noble quest for a lady," Lysander lit a cigarette dragging on it. "The Earl of Rochester John Wilmot has said in one of his ever wise poems: 'Love a woman? You're an ass!' He's right. But loving a man is harder," He exhaled, then quickly amended a statement that could be read wrong. "Or so my female friends have said. Plenty of decent women to be had, not enough decent men. I've made it clear, I'll have a smart woman over a pious lady anyday. Stupid bitches will believe anything a priest tells them," he laughed. "But I digress, the only thing more stupid than taunting the lioness, would be to insult her," he offered a calvier grin.

Fancy scrutinized his words carefully.

"True, my sex is an unforgiving one. Though it is not surprising, considering how far those indecent ones of yours pushes woman more than they should have to endure."

Lysander had no choice but to agree. "Touche, mamosille." he nodded. "If anything, it just means you just may be the stronger one," he grinned.

"A broken one I suspect. But that's another marvelous thing about the fairer sex, we're far more resilient." She searched out her own purse for a cigarette and pulled it out. She didn't pull out her lighter, giving her company the chance to offer his assistance.

"Resilient?" Lysander snorted. He pulled out his silver lighter, holding the flame to her cigarette. The gesture automatic. He thought about it. "You may be right about that. Women often out live their husbands,"

Fancy hid her smirk and appeared grateful as she leaned over and lit her cigarette on the offered flame. She sat back in her chair, switching one crossed leg to the other, as she took a long drag while he continued on.

"Men aren't bred to be able to survive the things women have to. When they die the are regarded as heroes and hard workers, when women die they are remembered for the family they left behind that will suffer without them."

"That's such a morbid outlook." Lysander shook his head. "Men chase after the fountain of youth, something unattainable. Our heroship fades, but children live on." He said penisively. "And that, is true immortality."

[info]fancy_lamorne

Fancy scoffed at that. "Immortality is over-rated. And really Monsieur Lisburne, whom do you remember more fondly? You're father who spent his life and yours chasing after something unattainable, or your mother who nursed and cared and lived only for your happiness and well-being? If my legend were the former I would rather be forgotten."

Lysander snorted. "Neither. I remember my Viviane," he said refering to his violin. "Her music is the only sweet memory I have of my youth," he tapped his cigarette on the edge of an ashtray. "But I suppose it depends on the person, would you rather be remembered as a mass murderer who dislocated thousands of people, destroyed ancient cultures and practices all for the sake of impressing your own self on another, or a kind and gentle soul whose children live on to enrich the world."

"The latter most definitely."

Lysander could only grin at that. He took a drag on his cigarette tapping the ashes in the tray. "If the war and her mother permits me. The child is more or less angry at the world around her." He shrugged. "But I suppose if I had white skin and red eyes I would be too,"
