You Can't Hide Away Forever
Who: Gretchen OT Hans
Where: Starting at Hans' Place
When: July 8, 1941, Early Evening

Gretchen stopped by Hans' house, hoping to see him. Ever since his friend left town, he had been in a blue mood. Of course, getting shot hadn't helped matters at all. She was glad that he was finally able to go back to work, but now he was either at work or sitting around at home and doing nothing. She didn't realize how close him and Marie-Pierre were, but they must have been the best of friends for him to be moping like this.

Gretchen knocked on his door, hoping that he was inside. Of course, if he wasn't, maybe that meant that he had decided to stop moping about and go out. She wasn't expecting him to do such a thing, though. However, if he was still inside, he was going to go out with her whether he wanted to or not. You shouldn't spend all of your free time alone in a house.

"Just a moment," Hans called. He set down the drink he'd been drinking and the book he'd been reading to go answer the door.

His expression of annoyance at having to get up softened when he saw his sister there. "Ah, Gret- come in."

Gretchen smiled at Hans. "Gladly," she said, walking into the home. "So, how has your day been so far, brother?"

"Not bad. Quiet. I was just reading..."

He indicated the book by his chair, and hoped she didn't comment on the drinking. He'd been doing far too much of that lately. "And you?"

She managed to not 'tsk' at him over the drinking, but it was an effort. "I've been doing well. You shouldn't sit in this house all by yourself so much."

"Who else would I sit in the house with?" Hans asked, a trace of bitterness in the tone.

He settled back into his chair and picked up his drink to have a sip. "Can I offer you some wine? Did you have dinner?"

She sighed softly when she heard the bitterness in his voice. "You should meet more people, Hans." Then again, most of the population was not friendly to Germans, for obvious reasons.

"I'd like a glass of wine, yes." She shook her head when he asked if she'd dinner yet.

"Shall I make something for us, or would you like to go out?" Hans asked. That reminded him of something, and he reached for his coat to fish something from the pocket.

"Oh, and speaking of such- I hope you are free tomorrow evening. I purchased some theater tickets for us."

"How about we go out?" Gretchen asked. "We could get some food at one of the local places."

She managed to not squeal when he handed her a ticket. "How lovely. Who gave you the tickets?"

Hans actually managed a laugh as he thought about it. "I purchased them from a very strange Frenchman who owns a theater," he said.

He put on his jacket and offered his arm to Gretchen. "Very well then- we will go out. You know I cannot resist your wishes."

She took his arm so that he could lead her out. "You shouldn't resist your sister, Hans. I know what's best," she said with a smile.

"You met a strange Frenchman? Where is the theater that he owns?" She was always curious about who he met.

"His name is Benoit and the theater is named after him - a family theater," Hans explained as they left his house and walked out into the street.

He didn't offer the use of his motorcycle - driving it didn't appeal to him much these days, and it hardly seemed a proper ride for his sister anyway. Besides, the breeze was cooling and it was a nice evening for a walk. "He had the nerve to seat himself across from me at lunch the other day."

"Yes, the nerve of him," Gretchen said with a small grin. "At least this means that we'll get to go to a theater, though." Gretchen was very happy about that. "What is this Benoit like, other than 'strange'?"

Handsome, Hans thought, but did not give voice to. "Oh, you know... like any other Frenchman I suppose."

He shrugged a shoulder to indicate his vast indifference. That he'd learned the subtle art of the Gallic shrug from Marie-Pierre was something else he didn't want to think of.

"Vaguely annoying, somewhat condescending..."

Interesting, charming...

Gretchen thought about poking fun at him a bit over his stereotyping of Frenchmen, but decided against it. Still, she couldn't resist one little rib. "Yes, all Frenchmen are like that." Of course, she didn't really know herself. "So, he just walked right up to your table and sat himself down?"

"Well, to be fair he did ask - but then he raised a newspaper and ignored me," Hans said, annoyed just by the memory of it. "How rude is that? They have no manners, these French..."

And sometimes they shoot you.

"Such manners," Gretchen said. It really was strange that someone would ask to join you at a table and then read a newspaper. "At least you've gotten theater tickets out of the experience."

"Yes- when he did speak, he told me about his theater- they are performing Shakespeare - A Midsummernight's Dream. Regrettably, in English - but still it will be nice to see. I walked down to the theater district and picked up the tickets yesterday."

Part of the reason he was so damned tired today. It rankled him how little stamina he had for walking since the shooting. He could only hope that as time went on this would pass. Still, he hoped they would reach the restaurant soon.

"They're performing a play in France in English?" Gretchen asked. Of course, she new the play well enough to follow it, but that just sounded odd. She at least expected it to be in French, although she herself would have preferred German.

They reached the restaurant pretty quickly, thankfully, by the looks of Hans.

"Yes, of all things." Hans was glad to settle in to a chair and take some of the weight off his aching body.

"Because it was originally written in that language you see - and Benoit is a bit of a purist that way, it wold seem."

"Well, since he insists on being such a purist, maybe a third of the people in the audience will understand it." Luckily, she had read the play enough to understand it, anyway. "I'm sure he'll learn soon enough the error of doing that."

Hans chuckled. "We will see tomorrow, yes?"

When the waiter came around, he ordered a bit of light dinner- some chicken affair that was unlikely to upset his stomach - and wine. Out of deference to his sister, he ordered that as a glass and not the bottle.

Gretchen nodded, and ordered herself dinner with water as well. She would have liked wine with her dinner, but wasn't sure how her brother would react. "How is being back at work now?" she asked him.

"Exhausting," Hans admitted. "There is a lot to catch up on - and everything is tiring these days. TO make matters worse, they had my assistant transfered while I was away - he apparently handled the work on his own less-than-well."

"I can imagine how tiring it could be," Gretchen said. Of course, she couldn't picture herself working such a stressful job. "What did your assistant do? Something really bad?" It could be anything from filing something wrong to...well, best not think of what it could be if it was much worse than that.

"General incompetence is what they said." Hans gave a small shrug. "He seemed efficient enough when he was working under me - likely they overwhelmed him with too much work while I was out."

Poor fellow. He couldn't help but wonder if the 'transfer' wasn't an execution.

"He was probably overwhelmed," Gretchen said to him. "I'm sure that they moved him to a less busy place." That probably wasn't what really happaned, but it was better to think that than the alternative.

"I hope this is the case," Hans said. "He was a nice young man- not much older than yourself."

He rubbed his forehead. "Ah, sorry... I do not mean to trouble you with such, my dear. How have things been with you? How is your job?"

"I'm sure that he's just fine," Gretchen told him.

"Don't worry about it. I'd rather you tell someone what's on your mind that to bottle it up all the time." She took a sip of her water. "Things have been going well. My job has been going splendidly."

Of course, her job was keeping her fed and a roof over her head. She couldn't really ask for much more, considering the times.

"Ah good," Hans said, smiling. "And have any young men caught your fancy?"

He would, of course, like to meet any man that his sister dated - but he knew how these things went. Meeting the brother was not often a top priority.

Gretchen shook her head. "I've kept myself a little preoccupied with my job to have a man catch my fancy." Actually, that wasn't quite true. After following one boy here and the relationship quickly ending, she hadn't so much as looked.
