Cedar
WHEN: July 1st
WHERE: Moulin Noir
WHO: Vito, OT anybody

Vito settled at his usual table with a good bottle of red wine. a fresh pack of cigarettes and a not-too-ancient edition of the New York Times. He smiled at a passer-by, and poured himself a glass. Jackie would probably show ... no telling who else would, if anybody. He took a sip, and waited.

Eric had a few words with the bartender, nodded a few times, and quietly made his way over towards the table. Things were definitely starting to get interesting. "Monsieur," he said politely.

"Bon soir," Vito said. He poured a glass of wine and slid it towards the man. "Have a seat ... "

Eric settled down into a chair, and took the glass of wine, trying to be more casual than he felt at the moment.

"A little tough to break the ice, in situations like this," Vito said. "So, I'll just lay my cards on the table. Things need to change around here, and I'm willing to step up and make that happen. And I need to find a few other people willing to do the same."

"What exactly did you have in mind?" Eric inquired, after making a discreet glance around. "Things are already changing, just not in particularly pleasant ways."

"For the better, I'd hope," Vito said. "Making things unpleasant for the Nazis ... hitting their various supply lines, maybe more elaborate operations if we have enough skilled people working with us later on."

Marie headed in to the Noir, and straight for Vito's table. She vaguely recognized the man who was sitting with him as someone who'd come in to buy bread a time or two.

"Good evening," she said. "I hope I'm not late..."

"Not at all, madame. The night's still young." He poured her a glass of wine.

Marie took the wine and thanked Vito before looking to his companion. "I don't believe we've met - though your face is familiar..."

"Eric of No Office Of Particular Import," Eric said, matter-of-factly.

Marie smiled, and offered her hand. "Marie, of the business of baking bread."

She supposed that it was better not to give last names, considering their intent.

Eric shook the hand and nodded his head. "A very important task."

"Have we any assignments yet?" Marie asked Vito. "Anything we should be working on? Because I do have a few things of my own I've run across..."

"I'm al ears," Vito said. "No assignments yet, if only because I'm no sure what we can accomplish without drawing too much attention to ourselves, singly or as a group. And too much attention means that much less we can do, and that much less we can enjoy the results."

"There is a certain person I know of who needs papers," Marie said. "I have an idea about how to go about creating an identity for him - but it is a dangerous situation, as he is an American here under bad circumstances..."

Eric chuckled. "It's hard to be an American here under good circumstances, mon cheri."

"I think I can help you, there," Vito said to Marie. "I got a line on a good papers woman. Very convincing work."

She smiled at Eric's comment. "One can imagine."

"Thank you," Marie said to Vito, relieved. "I had an idea that I can disguise him as my grandson - send one of my actual grandsons to the country. The one we need to hide is close to my Andre in appearance. I thought perhaps he should apply for a new set of papers, saying he dropped his wallet in the river or some such and his were destroyed - then we would have an authentic set of documents to work from, changing where it is necessary."

Years of running a business had made her mind sharp for little details such as this.

Vito nodded as Marie explained. "Yeah, that sounds like it could work. How is he with the language? Will he be okay if someone stops him on the street and starts speaking French to him? Can he blend in?"

"We are teaching him better- he has a basic understanding of simple phrases but his accent is terrible," Marie said.

"That will be our biggest obstacle."

"That can be tough," Vito agreed. "I did the immersion approach ... I didn't speak English at all, for the first year or so I was here. You learn fast, that way. Don't know if he'll have the luxury of hetting used to things, though."

"I hope he will learn," Marie said. "For his sake as well as our own. If nothing else, he can play a little simple and not answer many questions..."

If they assumed he was a bit slow, strangers might take pity on any mistakes and not ask much of him.

"Yeah, I'd recommend that, at first," Vito said. "Just let me know when I can met with him ... it'll probably take a few hours to get the documents done, and we'll need to get him photographed."

"Where he is currently staying the woman watching over him is nervous - she barely let me in to see him," Marie said.

"How about I try to get him to the bakery, say, in a few days? After hours. I live in the apartment above the shop - so we can work there."
