Six hours later
Six hours have passed since Avalon and its accompanying ships arrived at the site of the combined wreckage of a Battlestar and  Basestar from the First Cylon War. The a pair of civil engineering ship were already cutting large sections from both wrecked ships, and those sections were being loaded into awaiting freighters. While marines explored and continued to clear the wrecked ships. Other landing parties retrieved and salvaged parts, such circuit boards, and other miscellaneous items inside those wrecked ships.

Meanwhile inside the wrecked basestar, a marine triped over a deactivated Cylon centurion and smashed against a control console.

A couple of minutes later, back inside Avalon’s situation room. “Frak,” said Captain Johnston into a handset. The young officer turned toward the Admiral. “Brownlee has picked up a short burst transmission coming directly from the Basestar.”

Someone else added. “One of the power plants inside the Battlestar Colossus is powering back up. On its own!”

"On it's own?"

While plans had been drawn up, for just this sort of eventuality, it made that recent discovery no less puzzling. What seemed most curious, was that it came from the fused Colonial ship, rather than Cylon.

"Any change?"

"None, Sir. Wait, we're detect-"

Across the loudspeakers, an indecipherable scream of audio cried out so loud, many produced feedback, in their own right and headsets were ripped off. As sharp as any knife, it ended as abruptly as having begun.

"What in the hell was that...?!"

Had there been a physical enemy, that would be one thing. What there was, was a puzzle. Uncertainty. The exact opposite to what a warrior needed. Sinclair ahd every psychological incentive to demand answers.

"It's..." Not actual sound, of course. Would never have survived a vacuum. It had simply been processed, interpreted and relayed in that way. "Some kind of charged datasquirt. A second transmission. Came from the wrecks, but there's so much shielding we can't pinpoint-"

Just then, a loud explosion was heard. Something internal had blown in the Avalon. A pre-planned response to the signal? Or had something been set in place by a Cylon infiltrator? Or perhaps a simple mechanical screw up? That was the problem - no way to tell.

"Admiral! The Colossus' reactor! We've got critical readings fluctuating all over its grid."

Realising that familiar sensation of impending doom, Sinclair's eyes widened. Deliberate sabotage or simply the result of an unsafe contraption encountering an obvious malfunction? In either case, her attention now zeroed in on something she had feared. At least one of the two wrecks had just potentially become a giant bomb.

"Tell the salvage crews to cease all operations and jump to minimum safe distance. Get the closest Marines in on engineering and shut that thing down - now."

Minutes? Seconds? How much time did they have before things went south in a way nightmares were made of? And how many might die before this was over?

Captain Johnston reached down to retrieve his headset that he had thrown to the floor during the high pitch squeal. He had intended to relay the Admiral’s orders to the salvage crews, when he noticed a lit small red LED on the detonator attached to the plastic explosive under the operations desk.

He shouted out, “Bomb!”. Without a moment’s thought he grabbed the explosive device off the underside of the desk and ran toward the hatch with it before the second red LED light began to flash. His final conclusion was that the explosive device was meant to assassinate the Admiral and those immediately around her, but it was not big enough to destroy or kill all those in the room. It had to be small to smuggle into the room.

“Get out of my way!” he said as he shoved someone to one side. He just crossed the hatch when the second red LED flashed three times, before the device tucked in close like a pyramid ball in Captain Johnston’s hands exploded. Killing him and others immediately near the hatchway, and injuring others.

“Are you alright, sir?” asked the undiscovered Cylon agent. Eva had come running into the smoky situation room from another entrances after the loud thud of the explosion. She reached out her hand toward the Admiral who she found on the floor.

“Take my hand.” she pled.
