Arriving on board Avalon
Kit stowed in lockers after bunks assigned, weapons locker inspected and equipment checked. Suits issued, tried on and tested. Briefings with another two officers, one about the basestar, the other on the older class of battlestar they would be entering through. It was four hours after they'd arrived on the Avalon and John's team were as primed and ready as possible.

Time for chow.

"Now I know we're back," Spider grunted as they started eating. "Chow 'asn't changed."

"Better 'n a smack in the jaw with a whore's handbag," Avalanche rumbled, the food dwarfed in his hands.

"And you would know just what that's like now, wouldn't you, Avalanche?" Spike jibed, elbowing the huge man. Of all of them Avalanche would be the least likely to have been near Babylonia and the delights on offer at 'Five'.

John laughed quietly, pleased to see them all falling back into place with each other as if little had changed in the three years that'd passed. He still had concerns on the younger two, but Spider was keeping a special eye on them, one had been with him on the last ship he'd been assigned to.

He glanced around, nose twitching a little as he sniffed. He had noticed it as soon as they'd stepped aboard the shuttle bringing them across, the smells that only existed on a military ship. When they'd disembarked in the hangar, the shuttle having been towed directly there instead of being unloaded in the open, general area of the landing decks, it had been almost an assault on his nose. He'd inhaled deeply, bedding the smells into his memory again.

"'sup, boss?" Spider noticed his attention was elsewhere and looked around to see if he could figure out what John was looking at, or for.

"Nuthin', just, you know... " He sniffed quietly. "... settling in." Spider heard the quiet noise and saw the twitch of John's nose and grinned. "'s alright then," he murmured, "now I know we're back." He'd been with John for most of their careers and knew the man's habits and senses probably as well as John did himself. Maybe even better. "S' long as that snout o' yours is on the job? Job's good."

"Yeah, all we need is a frakkin' nose in those suits," John reminded him with a smirk. "Can't be much use otherwise."

"Don't worry, boss, reckon it'll work jus' fine even inside!"

John returned the grin and shook his head, their quiet exchange something no-one else had heard, the two men falling into companionable silence as the rest of the team continued their meal.

Cole smiled evenly at Avalanche. "I'm flattered to know the first thing that springs into your tiny mind is the thought of me masturbating. Really, I am. Says alot for your obvious comfort with your sexual orientation, sir, and I commend you for it."

He took a sip of his drink, "As for what I'm doing when I'm not part of your twisted little fantasies... well, I'd talk to your sister about that. She's always seemed to think it as - how do I put this delicately? Oh, yes - 'Time well spent.'"

Avalanche just chuckled softly. "Only in your dreams, sweetcheeks." He turned back to the table. "Boys, we got ourselves a dogone necrophiliac! Better watch your backs, if all he can get is the dead in his dreams." He looked back to the pilot for a moment, shaking his head. "Why don't you sit down and join us? We haven't heard a good fairytale for a long time, and sounds like you're full of them."

He joined in their laughter and moved closer. "What I do in my dreams is my own business," he said with a chuckle.

"The name's West. Cole West." He nodded in turn to each of the men, "The jocks over in the Hydras call me Vagabond. And as far as hearing stories: Well, I've got plenty of stories - but when it comes to fairy tales," he motioned to Avalanche, "I thought we'd already established your propensity for daydreaming about young men engaging in self pleasure, Tiny? Isn't that 'fairy'-tale enough?"

"We ain't established nothin', sweetcheeks," Avalanche smiled. "You're happily makin' it up as you go along, and the boys here haven't heard a good yarn since someone tried t' tell them that it took brains t' fly!" More than a few of the marines ducked their heads, knowing only too well just how popular Avalanche was among the ladies on Babylonia and had to work hard to stifle laughs as the big man's gentle voice continued. "So you come sit yourself down and tell 'em more of your fairytale, cuz I know it must be a real disappointment to y', that y' got the wrong plumbin' and all for my likin', but y' never know, maybe y' can spin a yarn good enough t' get the attention of one of 'em long enough to take care o' that need of yours for a good hammerin'."

John was listening to the exchange but taking more notice of the reactions of the two younger members of the team. Packrat and Ro hadn't spent a lot of time on militar ships and weren't so used to this sort of thing. All the others were just enjoying the entertainment, except Spider, who was keeping a close eye on Packrat, seated beside him. Ro appeared to be following the lead of the others at the table, but Packrat was a little more tense, his head down and shoulders set. John knew if he was going to get himself worked up over this sort of thing he'd be in for a hard time of it as their stay on the ship went on.

Rosie's stomach churned unpleasantly behind the polished exterior of her uniform. Her head felt lighter than air, but aside from mildly unpleasant shakiness, she was alright. Just not hungry. She was actually grateful for the impending mission. That way if she didn't eat as heartily as she might have, at least no one would ask questions.

She had no intention of sticking around. She waited in line long enough to grab a bottle of water and was about to head back to her rack, or anywhere else, when something caught her eye.

There was Cole, looking cocky and vaguely confrontational, and Rosie rolled her eyes. Just like him, she thought with slight irritation. He thought he was so superior. So cool. It made her stomach turn again. More of a tingle than a toss, really, but it was probably just lack of morpha.

She'd just started to turn away from the spectacle when she noticed that the fellows he was antagonizing didn't look particularly familiar. Come to think of it, they looked like marines. Interesting. And that's when she saw...

"John!" Rosie cried amiably, closing the distance between herself and the table quickly, all propriety, and even her aversion to conversing with Cole, momentarily forgotten.

"Excuse me," she said shyly as she came to a stop beside the table. "Lieutenant Grimm. I wondered if I might be seeing you aboard our fine Battlestar soon. I do hope you've been made welcome," she added with a quirked eyebrow and half a smile in Cole's direction.

John stood, easily done where he was seated at the end of the table. All heads at the table turned in unison to see who it was and John's grin grew wider, knowing exactly what would be going on in each of their minds.

"Lieutenant Shayle," he replied, pulling a chair over for her. "Fancy meeting you here." His glance flickered across to the pilot, Vagabond, and returned to Rosie. "Yeah, we're being given a good rundown by one of your associates here," he replied, offering Rosie the chair. "Care to join us?"

Cole cast a brief glance at John, flashing a brief smile. "Yeah, Rose. We're all just having good clean fun here." He turned his eyes to her, and the flashed as he spoke. For a moment, an instant, they seemed to hint at an emphasis on the word clean- or maybe it was just a trick of the brain. Either way, Cole motioned to the empty seat across from him. "

"Oh, uh, thanks," her smile was practically painted on. What had she been thinking? All she wanted was to get out of here, things had just taken a turn for the awkward. So she was as surprised as anyone else to hear her own voice chirp, "Alrighty!"

She screwed the top off her water bottle and chugged, the blessedly frigid liquid slid down her throat like liquid diamonds. Her mouth was dry. Why was her mouth so dry? And why in the hell was Cole flinging barbed comments at her like that? In front of John, no less. It was like he was trying to humiliate her on purpose or something.

She slumped into the chair. "So LT, I see you've met my friend Lieutenant West." She offered a huge smile to the other pilot before returning her attention to John. "Care to introduce me to your friends?"

A few of the men offered up their keen agreements, asking John to introduce them. "You sure you want to meet this rabble?" he grinned as he threw a wink down the table before looking back at Rosie. "Well, don't say I didn't warn you... Lieutenant Rosemary Shayl, this is the Guys. Guys? This is Lieutenant Rosemary Shayl, Lieutenant to you lot, right?"

A round of cheers and greetings rose from the lot of them, except Packrat whose eyes still darted across at Cole, in between listening to John and watching Rosie. Avalanche's voice rumbled down the table, a quieting tide that swept all the other chatter away. "Sure is nice to meet you, Lieutenant."

Cole shot a glance at Avalanche, "Careful there, big guy. A gal like that can get under a man's skin..." he flashed a cocky smirk at her, "Like an fever - an addiction, even." He took a long, deep draw from his bottle of water, his eyes twinkling across the table at her - whether they were filled with lust or rage, none could quite say.

For a moment Rosie's mouth hung open, the corners still turned up in a smile, but only just, until she nodded back at Avalanche. "Oh, the pleasure's entirely mine. It's good to see some new faces on Avalon." Her expression wasn't guarded, it was fortified and impenetrable.

"Only if he's a thin-skinned sap," Avalanche chuckled in response to Colt.

Cole chuckled, "Thin skin, thick skull - whatever." Cole glanced from Rose to Avalanche before putting his water down and turning his gaze from Lt. Grimm then to Rosie and back again. "So, Lieutenant, you two know each other?"

John noted the pointed comments Colt was making, and that there was apparently something going on behind them, reading people's faces and body language his specialty. Words were as interesting a weapon as the ones they all carried in their hands each mission, and sometimes a lot more dangerous. Having already observed the nature of the man and his need to rile people John pretty much figured it was his MO. "Yeah, we've met before," he replied non-commitally, glancing at Colt before turning his attention back to Rosie. "That offer still open?" he asked, not expanding, leaving it to her.

She breathed a quiet sigh of relief as John came to her rescue. "You're still welcome to a guided tour of Avalon, in all her glory," Rosie elaborated, partially for Cole's benefit.

Indeed, she kept an eye on his expression as she spoke, quickly returning her attention to John. "Might want to save it until after the mission though, I don't know how busy you are."

Cole shook his head and sat his utensils on his half-empty tray.

"Nah," he stood up, "You kids go, have fun. I want to clock a few more hours in the sims before things get official."

His expression seemed to darken as he turned away, and his stride wasn't quite as cocky as he eventually disappeared into the crowd of Colonial personnel who drifted through the mess hall.

John watched the other pilot leave and wondered what that was all about, not having a clue what had been said to the man for him to suddenly leave. He didn't give it much mind, turning and accepting Rosie's offer and suggesting they go now, "while this lot are still eating, because believe me, it isn't a sight a lady should have to see!"

Jeers went up, Spider's eyes meeting John's as he silently gave over responsibility for the unit to his 2IC and Spider accepted it.
