Stowing the last of his incidentals into a foot locker, Cole turned and flopped into one of the metal chairs that surrounded the tiny metal table sitting amongst the collection of bunks, photos and gear that the Black Hydras called home. He glanced around the room for a second and with a sigh he came to the realization that this was his home too. After pondering that thought for a moment or two he wasn't sure whether the idea of this new home was exciting or depressing. Still, the silence and solitude was causing some melancholy to slip into his mood.

He stood once more and took off his flight suit for the first time since he'd come aboard the Avalon. Now in his loose black pants and black and gray combination of sleeveless shirts, he reached for his guitar. Taking the beaten black case into his hands gingerly, he slowly opened the clasps. They groaned from age and wear. It was comforting, familiar sound. No matter where he'd gone in his life, Cole had always had his guitar.

Lifting the simple creation of polished wood and passion, he let the case slide onto the floor beside him and cradled the guitar in his lap like a newborn child. He lowered his head and let his hair tumble down, concealing his features. His hands rose, as if animated by some alien force and his voice drifted like a mourning song across the barracks.

While goin' the road to sweet Athae, hurroo, hurroo
While goin' the road to sweet Athae, hurroo, hurroo
While goin' the road to sweet Athae
A stick in me hand and a drop in me eye
A doleful damsel I heard cry,
Johnny I hardly knew ye.
With your drums and guns and drums and guns, hurroo, hurroo
With your drums and guns and drums and guns, hurroo, hurroo
With your drums and guns and drums and guns
The enemy nearly slew ye
Oh my darling dear, Ye look so queer
Johnny I hardly knew ye.

Where are your eyes that were so mild, hurroo, hurroo
Where are your eyes that were so mild, hurroo, hurroo
Where are your eyes that were so mild
When my heart you so beguiled
Why did ye run from me and the child
Oh Johnny, I hardly knew ye.

Where are your legs that used to run, hurroo, hurroo
Where are your legs that used to run, hurroo, hurroo
Where are your legs that used to run
When you went for to carry a gun
Indeed your dancing days are done
Oh Johnny, I hardly knew ye.

I'm happy for to see ye home, hurroo, hurroo
I'm happy for to see ye home, hurroo, hurroo
I'm happy for to see ye home
All from the island of Virgon
So low in flesh, so high in bone
Oh Johnny I hardly knew ye.

Ye haven't an arm, ye haven't a leg, hurroo, hurroo
Ye haven't an arm, ye haven't a leg, hurroo, hurroo
Ye haven't an arm, ye haven't a leg
Ye're an armless, boneless, chickenless egg
Ye'll have to put with a bowl out to beg
Oh Johnny I hardly knew ye.

They're rolling out the guns again, hurroo, hurroo
They're rolling out the guns again, hurroo, hurroo
They're rolling out the guns again
But they never will take our sons again
No they never will take our sons again
Johnny I'm swearing to ye.

His gravelly, mournful voice slipped away into the empty room. He didn't move for a second. Finally, after what seemed like hours to his weary mind, he slowly placed the guitar back into it's beaten leather case. It occurred to him for a moment how much it resembled a coffin, but he let that thought slip away quickly. One he'd tended to 'the dead', Cole reached opened his foot locker and retrieved a small metal flask. He collapsed once more into the unforgiving mental chair and after a deep draw from the flask, he slammed it down onto the table with a loud clang.

In a similar sound, the hatch to the locker banged shut and Rosemarie Shayl staggered through the door. Her breath smelled faintly of ambrosia for anyone who got close enough to notice, and her hair was disheveled.

She started a bit upon finding this stranger in the bunk. "Oh, um, hey," she said with practiced calm, and flopped into a seat nearby. "I don't think I know you?"

"Yeah, me neither." He muttered in a low grunt before composing himself and forcing a smile onto his face.

"No, sweetheart, I can't say you do." He held out a hand and offered her a lop-sided smile. "My name's Colton West, but behind the stick they call me Vagabond. I just got transfered from the Pacifica."

She smiled back, not entirely genuine, but it would do. For one thing, he was someone she hadn't met yet, and for another, he was pretty easy on the eyes. It was enough to make whatever melancholy Rosie had been carrying slip to the background.

"Rosie," she answered. "I think I've heard you on wireless. I'm also known as Cupcake." She actually blushed for half a second at the juvenile nature of her callsign. Whatever, she couldn't exactly shrug it off, and taking it as an insult would only reinforce her retarded flight instructor's ideas about her capabilities.

"Nice to meet you," she said in a honeyed tone, picking up his flask to take a draught from it.

He chuckled at her casual demeanor and seemed to relax as she took a dram from his flask. "Well, Cupcake, if you're going to partake of my wine then you've got to give me your story."

He kicked out the chair across from him with his booted foot and took a moment to size her up. She was younger than him, though they shared the same rank. He suspected she more than a little tipsy, judging from her casual demeanor and brief questions. Still, he thought, at least she was in a good mood. It helped him stay light and drinking with a cute young fighter jock was always better than drinking alone.

"My story?" she laughed. "Can't say I've got much of one. My story tonight is that I've been drinking that ass moonshine the knuckledraggers are makin' and now I'm feeling rather sociable."

He let his expression relax her laughter filled the room. "Sociable, huh?"

Sliding his flask across the table to her, he pondered the devilish mystery of this woman for a moment. He leaned back in his chair, propping his feet on the table, "Alright then. If you're going to drink, you might as well have something good."

He nodded to the flask, "Rum. I got it imported off of Shangri-La a few weeks ago. Help yourself."

Cute, he thought. Definitely cute. "So, is it Cupcake because you're short and sweet or Rosie because you're long stemmed, beautiful, and riddled with thorns?" As the last words left his mouth and mentioned stems he glanced at her legs, and for the first time he seemed to take in her whole body from head to toe.

She grinned ridiculously, the kind of smile that threatens to break a face, and took a slug from the flask. "It's better than moonshine," she said breathlessly.

"It's Cupcake because some asshole thought it would be funny to name me something diminutive. And it's Rosie because I'm not creative enough to find a new one. And do they call you Vagabond because you are one? Must have something to do with your flying..."

"Well you're anything but diminutive, Cupcake." He paused for a moment, memories flooding his mind as he remembered his early days as a nugget. He chuckled to himself at some story from the past.

"Vagabond came about because 'Fracking Pain in the Ass' was too much to say over the wireless. Actually my first flight instructor used to say I had a habit of flying off 'like some kinda vagabond' by myself to do some damned crazy stunt or maneuver that he was sure would get me killed one day."

He laughed again, and reached across the table. Taking the flask from her hand, he grinned. With a deep wash of rum he handed it back to her, "You're cute when you smile, you know that Lieutenant?"

She tossed her head, sending a cascade of hair over her shoulder. Or rather it would have been a cascade, were it not a bit ratty from the evening's festivities. It did, however, move over her shoulder in a somewhat close to alluring manner, and Rosie rested her chin in her hand.

"Oh I know," she replied artfully, taking the flask back. "So you're bunking here now? Well, that's awkward."

His lips curled in defiant jest, "Would you like me to go, then?"

"Oh, that isn't it at all. I think the opposite is my problem."

She tossed back another swig of rum, and replaced the flask to the table before flashing another silly smile. "So. Fellow like you, I'm guessing by the way you talk you're pretty good in the cockpit. Why haven't I met you yet? You've got to have a story of your own."

He let out a deep, hearty laugh that echoed through the room. "Turned the tables now, have we, Cupcake?"

He reached into his pocket and removed a small metal box. Flipping it open, he removed a single hand rolled cigarette. He then retrieved a small lighter. After putting flame to paper, he sat them on the table and gestured to them as communal property. A single long drag and he blew the thin gray smoke into the air.

"Tell you what," he leaned across the table and lingered close to her for a second. "Ask me any question you want - but for every question you ask I get to ask one of you. We both have to answer honestly."

He leaned back, clenching the cigarette between his teeth with a smug grin on his face.

Her finger came to rest on the cigarette case, and she thought--oh she thought--about opening it up and taking one for herself, but for once in her life she exercised restraint.

"Oh,the little question game," said Rosie. "I'm not good at this. I draw a blank."

"No problem," he said as he watched her fiddle with the cigarette case, "I'll start."

He paused, thinking for a moment. After another brief shot from the flask, "Let's see... how'd you end up behind the stick of a Viper on this bucket?"

"Oh, wow," Rosie shook her head. "Dumb luck? Gods, it's such a long story, I don't even know where to start."

Absently, she pushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "I flew a Raptor for awhile. It ended less well than it could have, and through pilot shortage, I got a much-welcomed upgrade. Alright, what made you go into the fleet?"

The burning edge of his cigarette flared with an orange light as he took a drag. "Well," he began with a heavy exhale, "it was military service or a penal colony for the ol' Vagabond."

His eyes glazed over as he looked inward down memory lane. He shook his head and chuckled, "On occasion I wonder if the judge wasn't playing some cruel joke on me."

He shrugged and let the memories stay where they belonged: in the past. "Truth be told, I was -and still am according to most- the biggest frack up to ever come off of Scorpia. What about you? Where you from?"

Rosie burst into giddy laughter. "And here I thought I was the biggest frak up to come off of Scorpia!"

Out of what might have been nerves, or just simply a lack of any good idea what to do with her hands, she gathered her hair into and approximation of a ponytail, and twisted it until it made a ratty bun at the crown of her head.

"So I guess that answers your question. I'm most definitely Scorpian, and I'm from the suburbs at that. I left young for Academy, just to get away from my family!" The statement had been meant as a lighthearted joke, but there was a shift as soon as the words had left her lips. Sure, her parents had driven her loopy, that didn't mean she wanted her whole colony decimated.

"Ok, next question," she continued. "Who did you piss off to get transferred?"

His eyes drifted to her neckline, lingering for only a moment as she played with her hair. He fought to ignore the serpentine thoughts that began to drift into his mind and returned to eye contact.

"More like 'Who didn't I piss off?'. Major Cuthbert and Commander Narbo have always been looking for a reason to frack up my program. Cuthbert and I went to flight school together, you know? He still likes to remind me that after all these years I'm still just a J.G." Cole sighed and then grinned before continuing, "I usually reply that after all these years I can still fly rings around his sorry ass."

He chuckled to himself, "As far as Narbo goes - let's just say he doesn't like it when people treat his wife better than he does. It's ashame too. Alle's a nice gal - great dancer too. But, to be honest, I think I might be better off here on Avalon. Fresh start and all that business."

He flashed a roguish grin and his eyes twinkled with a touch of madness. Clearly, he had no plans to 'shape up' for his new crew.

"But enough business talk," he grabbed the flask, taking a quick tug. He slammed it back down and has his hand drifted away, his finger brushed Rosie's hand with the faintest touch. Cole pretended not to notice.

"What do we do around here when we're not blasting toasters?"

"Ooh, a scandal."

She swallowed thickly, and met his eyes with the cool confidence of the mildly drunk. "As for what we do for fun, probably the same repetitive crap you did on the Pacifica," she replied. "We play Triad in the rec room, usually I win." She flashed a grin. "Sometimes they box. I don't bother, but it's interesting to watch sometimes. I just don't go down too often 'cause I'm afraid one of these days someone's going to call me out!"

He shrugged, the mad smile never leaving his face. "Boxing? I'll stick to my sidearm, thanks. Besides, if they ever do get you in the ring just kick 'em in the balls."

He leaned across the table, inches from her face. His eyes drank in her exotic features and the scent of booze and sweat was almost psychedelic. "As far as fun on Pacifica," he said in a harsh whisper, "that's another matter entirely."

Finally giving in to the dangerous alchemy of loneliness, alcohol and his own desire, Cole slipped a tiny bit closer and brought his lips to hers, dancing across them with the gentle whisper of an autumn wind.

All to readily, Rosie's eyes fluttered shut. She held her breath, more awkward than anything else--it had been a long time since anything had surprised her it seemed. This surprised her, if only slightly.

Finally, she managed to pull back, only slightly. "Is that what you lot do for fun on Pacifica then?" she whispered.

A lop-sided grin slipped onto his face, but his eyes never opened. His words, barely a quivering whisper, slithered into her ears like whiskey to those to a man driven mad by thirst: An instant of satisfaction, followed by a flood of passion.

His hand hand reached up slowly, pulling away a strand of her hair as he drew out the awkward silence and drank deeply of the tension.

Finally, he spoke: "Beats the hell out of boxing, doesn't it?"

He laughs deeply and let out a long, deep sigh. A bit of the sexual tension seemed to ease, though it lingered in the air - like a hover perfume that accented the room.

"So, may I ask you a question Cupcake?"

His eyes twinkled with a devilish light as he lifted a single finger and ran it down the side of her face with the gentle ease of painter making his first mark upon a canvas.

Rosie giggled, high-pitched and feminine, and somewhat uncharacteristic. "Don't know," she replied simply. "Depends on a lot of things." Even a year ago she would have said flying without even thinking about it. The constant possibility of death had kept it interesting to her, but once she'd actually been hit and death had stared her in the face she'd been quick to change her mind.

"Depends on who you're with, depends on the day, depends on what's at stake..." she trailed off.

He let out a soft sigh, his mood darkening. His typical lop-sided roguish grin shifted ever so slightly into a grin that almost seemed to be one of apology and empathy. He reached up and ran the back of his fingers across her cheek. His grin quivered slightly.

"You really are beautiful, you know that? I suspect there's a lot more to you than meets the eye, Rosemarie."

"A whole lot more," his last words drifted out as a whisper - almost as if he were saying them to himself instead of her.

She bit her lip, and met his eyes with half a smile. "Maybe there is, and maybe there isn't." She leaned forward again, her words laced with rum and a certain amount of desire.

"I know there's more to you than you let on. I find that to be very interesting."

Finally, she pulled away after a pregnant pause, and stood shakily.

As she pulled away, Cole suddenly surged forward. He didn't want to look deeper. He didn't want to see her dark, hidden secrets. He didn't want to know the terrible truth of her pain. He was tired. Tired of feeling like a failure. Tired of feeling lost. Tired of feeling dead. Tired of covering it all up with false bravado.

His hands and lips danced across her face, fingers entwined in her hair as he clung to her as if she were some kind of live preserver. He wanted to drink her lips like ambrosia. He wanted to be wrapped in her scent. He wanted to touch the warmth of her skin. He wanted, more than anything, to feel something other than the terrible gaping hole that filled his heart ever since C-Day.

He kissed her, deeply, madly, passionately. One hand slipped from her long, dark hair, down her back and with a sudden -almost angry force- he pulled her closer while his free hand shoved the metal table separating them aside with a loud metallic clang.

In this moment he wanted her more than anything. He wanted this feeling more than anything.

She'd been about to go. About to make some excuse, run down the hall to the water closet, maybe take a shower. She wasn't really sure where she'd meant to go, but she was already feeling naked and awkward. She'd said something too much, or worn her emotions too casually. The situation had become something she wasn't comfortable with, and she'd sought escape.

But this? This was something Rosie could understand.

Her breath knocked from her lungs as much by shock as any force on Cole's part, it took her half a second to even realize what was happening. Once she did, her response was automatic, animal. Her body shoved against his, her hands fisted in his hair, as the rest of her thoughts fell out of existence.

It was all a blur, and that's how Cole wanted it. Zippers were practically torn open and buttons snapped from their hold points. As their hearts pounded and pulses raced only music was the sound of voices gasping in pleasure and desperation, the only vision in the darkness of space was one of silhouettes and dreams.

For what seemed like a single instant frozen by their own desperate sensations there was no Pacifica, no war, no loss. There was only basic human desire.

And for tonight, that was all there had to be.
