Dinner
Dinner proved to be fun. Their journey from the bar to the casual, easy-going dining area had taken a little longer when Rosie had mistakenly taken them down a wrong corridor, a lucky meeting with a crew member finally setting them back on the right track again.

Always one with a good appetite John finished off his dessert with relish, shaking his head when asked if he'd like another. The conversation had been light and fun, tall tales told and silliness imbued. As they left the dining room John looked across at the directory that indictaed where some of the entertainment areas lay, and what was available.

"So, what would m'lady like to do now?" he asked, indicating the directory.

Rosie laughed. "Uh, I dunno," she replied, looking down at her feet. Considering that her main interests consisted of sex, Morpha, and winning at Triad, Rosie doubted that anything she suggested was going to make a good impression.

Finally, she shrugged. "I come here all the time. I'm assuming you're new to this ship. You pick."

"Could say I'm a Shangri-La virgin," he told her with a smirk and wink before looking at the listing. "Just a simple lad from Tauron," he continued as he ran his eyes down the list to see what might be fun. He chuckled at some, arched an eyebrown at a couple of others, then looked at her.

"Well, m' ma always told me it wasn't real good to go swimming right after eating, so what about a round of putt putt golf?" he suggested. He would really like to see her in the water, but gave her the option of going there, or stick to something a little more innocuous.

She smirked at that. "You always do what your ma told you?

"Alright. Golf it is. I'm awful at it, but I'm prepared to lose." She half turned, then added with a toothy grin, "After all, your first time should be special."

"When I'm around another lady I do," he returned with a mischievous grin. "She'd have m' guts for garters if she found out, and believe me, she has ways of knowing stuff!" As he spoke he guided them in the direction indicated, the travellator taking them to the deck that held the small course. "I reckon it'd be very special, considering the company," he added, returning her grin. He knew he wouldn't mind helping with game and told her.

"Ah, why thank you." She laughed. "I have to admit, it's a welcome change to get to show you around. Or whatever it is that we're doing. I'm pretty likely to get us lost, this ship is so huge!"

As they came up on the mini-golf course, she noted with satisfaction that it was almost entirely empty. It was funny how in the years they'd spent running from the Cylons things like recreation had started to become a priority again. Most of the personnel onboard the Avalon preferred sports like boxing. Rosie didn't box, not because she didn't feel like smacking some of her fellow officers from time to time, but more because she thought it might mess up her face or something.

As she unabashedly checked out John, however, she thought she wouldn't mind seeing him in the ring, if that was the kind of thing he was into. Marines usually were.

The chose their clubs and balls and made their way to the first hole. "So, uh, I want a low score in this, right?"

John returned the inspection, nodding as he placed his ball down on the small pad that served as a tee. "Yeah, that's the name of the game, scoring low," he grinned, eyeing the small pole and metal flag that rose from a hole at the end of the twisting course of green-clad concrete. He put the club's head to the ball and after a brief moment tapped cleanly at the ball, sending it down through the concrete twists to come to a stop near the hole.

She watched the ball with a low whistle. "Impressive. Most impressive." She set her own ball where his had been a moment before and took careful aim.

"Now prepare to be amazed," she instructed him, and hit the ball about five times as hard as she needed to. It ricocheted off the the little barrier at the back, rolled straight over the hole (was that even possible???) and came to rest about halfway between the hole and where Rosie stood with the club in her hand.

"Damn. I really am no good at this," she laughed.

"Alright. Sounds good." Rosie snatched the ball out of the air and walked the ten steps or so to the next hole. "I think you get to go first since you beat me on that last one? Maybe?"

"Sure," he agreed, placing his ball down again and eyeing the course laid out, a small ditch of water laying along the straight, which turned at 90 degrees but had a board to bounce a ball off. A sharp crack sent the ball skittering down, just making it over the water and clipping the rebound panel near dead centre to send it along the other leg toward the hole. He straightened and looked at Rosie. "See? Simple. Come here and I'll give you a hand if you like."

Her lips pursed in a thoughtful "o". Quite a change from the first hole. She grinned slyly and strode over to where he stood, a little more swing in her step than necessary, but who could complain? "Simple?" she asked, laughter on the edge of her words. "Doesn't look simple, but I'll take your word for it. Please, teach me."

"Glad to," he told her happily, taking her ball and placing it on the pad. "Right, now, face the ball, feet a little closer together," he told her, standing close behind to adjust her stance. His hand pressed on the outside of her thigh, encouraging her to move her feet a little closer together as he looked over her shoulder down at the grip she had on the putter. "And put your hands here, and here," he added, placing his hands over hers to shift them. "Feel that?"

Flashing a grin back over her shoulder, Rosie replied, "I think so. Now what? Is there some mystical kung fu secret to putting the ball in the hole?" And those words out of her mouth, she couldn't help it. She burst into giggles.

"Ah, you figured out the secret ingredient!" he mock-whispered near her ear, grinning broadly. "You realise that only those highly trained in the art of deception are allowed to know that secret and your very life might be at risk if you let out to the wrong people that you figure it out!" he teased, tightening his hold on her hands and swinging the putter to send the ball skittering down the tiny fairway. It didn't quite clear the water but didn't bounce back at them, rolling down the remains of the straight and coming to a stop near the rebound board. "Hmmm, need to work a little more on that swing, I think!" he teased.

"Do I?" she responded sarcastically. "Oh, and don't worry, you're secret's safe with me." She turned, placing them nearly nose to nose for just a moment before pulling away to chase after her ball.

He looked after her as she headed off down the course, a small puzzled frown creasing his forehead for a moment before he quickly cleared it and followed after her.

"So," said Rosie with a wide smile. "You never did tell me what brings you to Shangri-La in the first place. You here for R and R or what?"

She leaned on her club a bit, grinning cheekily.

He looked at her and returned the grin. "Yeah guess you could call it that. Catching up with some old buddies, a reunion really." Everything he said was the truth, they hadn't all been together anywhere since not long after the Exodus. "Then we're heading over to Avalon. I hear there are some pretty Viper jocks over there," he said as he brushed past her, leaning down kissing her chastely on the forehead. "Though the ones over here are pretty damned cute!" he chuckled.

He stopped as she caught his shirt, stepping close enough that there wasn't a lot of space between them. He tilted his head, eyes on hers as he waggled an eyebrow mischievously. "Oh, and why's that?" he asked, voice soft and almost a purr.

They left the golf course behind them and picked their way among the myriad of corridors that carved through the bulk of the Shangri-La. It wasn't hard to find the bio-domes. As they say, all roads lead to Caprica City, as it was on the ship. It was almost a magnet that drove them inexorably inward.

The main dome arched above them, but the boundary between ship and sky was not readily visible. There were stars up above them, and an orchard stretched out ahead. The colors were cold and planetary, beneath what could only have been moonlight, and Rosie felt the air knocked from her lungs in shock.

"My gods, it's beautiful," she whispered, as her hand found John's and wrapped around it. It really was like being on-world. It stirred her, shook her, and she let her gaze drift up to John's face.

In the main bio-dome

As they'd stepped through the twin doors that led into the orchard area of the main dome John had felt the change in temperature. From the very comfortable controlled atmosphere of the passenger areas to the inside of the bio-sphere the temperature seemed to drop dramatically. For a few moments he just stared, his soldier-brain automatically looking for exits and potential dangers, his human-brain trying to figure out when they'd returned and to what planet, while his male-part was taking a hold of Rosie's hand as her fingers entwined with his, and tugging her a few more steps inside, onto the 'ground'.

"You said it!" he agreed quietly, finally putting the soldier to bed and just dealing with the rest. "It's... like... " He couldn't decide which planet it was like and he'd lived on most of them as he'd grown up and through his career. He looked down at her and smiled, feeling the shiver that ran through her. "You warm enough?" he asked, his arm going around her shoulders. Once they'd been in there that short while it wasn't so bad, just the initial difference between the main decks of the ship and inside here was a shock, like getting in the water on a hot day.

"Come on, let's see what it's like further in," he suggested, jerking his head toward the hatch that was right behind them, and just as likely to be opened by anyone any time.

Rosie was silent, breathless. When he asked if she was warm enough she only snuggled against him, letting his arm warm her bare shoulders and staring out at the expanse of trees.

It reminded her of home, in an undefinable way, but at the same time it didn't. Scorpia was not, after all, famous for its stretches of orchards. Still, it tugged at something deep inside her. So when John suggested that they move further inside, she nodded dumbly and let him draw her down one of the moonlit paths through the orchard.

More than anything, it was the scent that had awakened memory. It was heavy with humidity and apples and good, damp soil. She closed her eyes, not even needing to see, trusting John to keep her from walking into anything.

"Do you think..." she whispered, unable to will more of her voice out. "Do you think this is what Earth is like?" As soon as the words had left her lips, she blushed. "I mean, if Earth was real. And all."

Inhaling deeply yet again, John walked beneath the shadows of the apple trees, his hand holding Rosie's as memories flooded back of days of his youth. There was such a different air in the dome, the trees, the other plantlife lending a 'life' to the air that the scrubbers just couldn't, and it was like it put life back into him he hadn't realised was missing.

"Dunno," he replied, "but wouldn't be surprised." He reached out and pressed his free hand against the trunk of a tree, shaking his head. "They really are real," he muttered, turning to look at Rosie. "Three frakkin' years since I've seen, let alone touched anything like this!"

"Yeah," she answered. "It's surreal..."

She walked over to rest her head against the tree trunk. "Where did you come from, anyway?" she asked conversationally. "Where did you live before...?" The rest of the question hung unvoiced between them, not needing words to have meaning.

He grinned as he leaned his shoulder against the trunk. "Where didn't I?" he replied, rubbing his jaw with his free hand. "Born on Tauron, and raised in more towns on more planets than I can remember." He tugged her hand to draw her closer. "Could say I'm a real 'Colonial Boy', hey? What about you?"

John's sub conscience took notes on the deck plans, something he'd learnt very quickly to do when on board a new ship, hoping it was the sort of information he'd never need, except to find his way back to the bio-dome, in this ship's case. The interior was different, but once they'd left the environment of the dome it was just another ship, with corridors and hatches, all noteworthy for future reference in his mind's library of 'terrain layouts'.

He offered her his arm, wanting to make sure she knew he wasn't about to get sick of her. As they reached the lift wells he shepherded her in when the car arrived, hand in the small of her back and putting himself between her and the other people in the car. "Which deck?"

"Six," she said with a smile. "Thanks." With others in the lift, she suddenly felt self-conscious, and she kept her eyes alternately on John and the floor. When the doors slid open with a soft ding, Rosie slid out into the corridor. Now it really resembled a hotel, lines of doors and surprisingly warm lighting. "I'm just. Um. I'm just down here," she said, her cheeks flushing.

He stopped, seeing the flush and wondering if she'd rather not have him knowing which one was hers. He glanced in the direction she indicated, the doors of the lift behind him already closed and the car departed. "Well, looks like it's a trouble-free ride from here," he joked, jerking his head in the direction she indicated as they stood there.

"If you want to come in...then..." she trailed off, blushed even darker, and cleared her throat. "I mean. Sorry. I'm going to do this right, for once in my life." And she stood up on tiptoe to press her lips to the marine's. "Goodnight John. I had a really great time tonight."

A little confused at the mixed signals he was getting John nodded slowly, a hand rising to cradle her cheek as he leaned in and kissed her again. "So did I," he murmured, gently holding her jaw as he kissed her more thoroughly, just as his way of trying to show her he wasn't about to get 'sick of her' any time real soon. "See you tomorrow?" he asked, not quite sure what time the rest of his team was coming in, but damned sure he was going to make sure he had time to see her again if she was willing.
