Anika lay on her stomach on the bed, the pages of Jake's most recent letter in front of her as she read it. The others he'd written all lay in a pile next to her, along with a small stack of blank pieces and a pen. She grinned as she read his description of Dani and how she was going, wondering just what he'd say if she showed it to Dani. She wouldn't, and it was probably one of the best descriptions she'd heard, even if it wasn't particularly complimentary just due to the situation. "Poor Dani," she murmured as she read it. She read through the letter again, as usual, before starting to write one in return. About two to three times a week they would communicate through letters, ship-to-ship communication for personal or private conversations more hassle than they were worth.

They'd spoken a couple of times since the tournament, on the air when he'd happened to be able to get airborne when she was, but otherwise it had all been through letters. Slowly they'd gotten to know each other a little better, their daily routines becoming a familiar thing, plus small snippets of life previous to the Exodus, which would creep in from time to time. She was still a little more cautious with what she wrote, the idea that her letters were going into the massive military maw of Avalon making her a little wary. Even though she usually delivered them on her run to the ship from time to time she didn't know what happened once they left the hands of the young clerk who collected the bag from her on hangar deck each time, exchanging it for one to go back to the central depot ship if she was going that way.

As she came in to land that afternoon she saw the clerk standing waiting near the doorway that led from the deck and wondered where Jake was, but as usual didn't expect to see him. She never really knew what time she'd be given clearance and most of her runs on the days she went to Avalon were geared so she could slot into the arrival patterns they had with the training flights and other traffic. Once Sting was settled on deck and she'd shutdown her systems she released her harness and stood up, stretching before opening the cabin door. Jumping down she headed straight for the lockers, greeting one of the few deckhands she'd grown to know with a half-smile and loading the things onto the trolley he'd brought over for her. The clerk hurried over, a worried look on his face.

"Hi Nik, got a special request from the boss. Seems this parcel has to be delivered to Babylon pronto, and you're the last shuttle heading out who can do it. Can you?" he asked, almost pleading.

"Frak!" she muttered, already a little concerned about her fuel levels and whether they'd get her back or not. A problem with the converters that morning had meant she hadn't been able to refuel as she'd wanted and she'd been running close to the bone. "Tell you what, you get me some juice for Sting and consider it done," she told him, the deckhand having heard the exchange chipping in there. He said he had an idea and would be right back, the expression on the young clerk's face suddenly lifting as he saw there was a chance he could get this thing sorted for his superior. "I'm really sorry Nik, but the boss has his balls in a twist.. oh frak, sorry!" The blush that suddenly coloured his cheeks was enough to set off heat sensors, she was sure. She quickly reassured him, with a little colourful language of her own, that it wasn't something she hadn't heard, or said before. "Can't hang around pilots as long as I have without picking a bit of it up," she added with a conspiratorial wink to the poor young clerk...

Coming off the flight line after a joint training exercise with the Battlestar Pacifica air group, Major Kobe Sykes, Avalon’s CAG signed his viper over to his plane captain, when he noticed the civilian courier ship. “Take care of the exchanger right way, Mister Kilgore. I don’t want my viper overheating in the middle of fight.”

“I’ll get on it right away, sir.”

He nodded and handed the clipboard to the petty officer, and proceeded to walk over to the courier ship. His hair was slightly damp from perspiration after wearing his flight helmet for the last five hours flying playing bad guy against Pacifica.

He had seen it before, but never took any interest in the ship till now. As he walked up to the ship, he read the name painted on the side of it. “Sting, uh.”

There was a deckhand who worked on filling out a form on the lift tractor that was attached to the ship’s front landing gear, which had moved the ship inside the hanger deck from the lift. “Hey, where’s the pilot of this ship?”

“Over by the locker, sir.” He pointed in the direction.

He saw the female pilot speaking with one of the quartermaster clerks and walked over to her.

Once in speaking distance. “Miss, is that ship yours?” The clerk looked suddenly worried upon seeing the CAG.

Anika turned, the expression on the young clerk's face making her bristle slightly.

"Yes," she answered simply, one hand resting on a hip.

“Privately owned is it. Would you be the person I need discuss about leasing her?” He realized he had not yet introduced himself. “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be rude. Major Kobe Sykes, I command Avalon’s air group.” He extended his hand out to greet her with a hand shake.

"Leasing her?" Her surprise was clear. She'd been hired by various people throughout the fleet for various purposes, but no-one had asked to lease her ship before, and definitely never an officer. Her own hand went out to return the greeting as she added, "Anika Jereldsen. I'm sorry, but did you say lease?"

“Well, I suppose that is what we have to do these days with the new government in power and all things considered. You know, ask nicely before we take it away.” He half joked, but their was obvious truth to his statement. The strike group had done the same before back in the Colonies.

If the information he was privy to was acted upon, he could use a ship such as hers for a mission. “She’s has FTL drives correct.” He knew they did on similar models of the same ship.

The previous bristling now turned frosty. The attempt to disguise the threat of taking her ship was not something she was going to take lightly, especially as she, and Sting were currently sitting on the fleet's damned flagship.

"Yes, she has," she answered, her voice a little less friendly and a distinct edge to it now. The mods carried out on her by the original designer, one of the ones behind the Raptors, were not known to many, mainly only Marcus and whoever he allowed to work on Sting, for the exact purpose of keeping the mods under DRADIS. Bryn's ship had had similar mods and they had been instrumental in getting him through blockades and out of danger on more than one ocassion. If it had been widely known what the little ship was capable of there would have been a good many more wanting to claim it by either fair means or foul.

"Can't imagine you'd have anything you had to do that one of your own ships couldn't handle, surely."

He turned to the clerk who had been lurking near by. “Do you have other things to do, specialist. I suggest that you do them.”

“Yes, sir.” he replied and gave Anika a look that he had no choice and then left, to come back later.

He turned back to the courier pilot. “Actually, if my assumptions are right about your ship, it may be quiet useful for a mission.” He rather use her ship to investigate the wreak of the Battlestar and Basestar than with one of his raptors. If he was right, her ship is a Mod. He had come across them before earlier in his career, when he was involved in smuggler interdiction duty.

“I can’t give you any more details at this time, but…” He wanted to be careful with his words. “Miss Jereldsen, it could lead to a source of resupply. Its all I can say.” He looked back at her ship and then back at her. “I would like to have my people inspect and evaluate your ship.”

He understood that this could interfere with her business affairs and made an offer. “We can pay for your time?”

"If you want to know anything about Sting I'm sure Marcus, the chief engineer on Shangri-La can tell you all you need to know. He's been looking after her for the last five years." She didn't want anyone 'inspecting and evaluating' her ship. The mods carried out by the designer were too close to what the Raptors had, and were not supposed to be carried by civilian ships. At least not back when Sting was built for her father.

“Don’t you know your own ship and her capabilities?” He could sense the unease from Anika, but he wasn’t here to make her comfortable. He had a recon mission to perform in thirty six hours.

“I’ll cut to the chase, if you ship is a MOD, then its able to creep up on another ship with little notice and evade detection, like our raptors. If it’s a MOD done right, it’s got a double hull, and impact plating, and a low electromagnetic signature.” It could be an ideal ship to evade any space mines or improvised explosive devices that the Cylons might have set around the wreckage, the one deterrent the raptor did not have without stripping its counter electronics systems.

“Miss Jereldsen can we do this nicely, please? Otherwise I will have no choice than conduct an official inspection of the ship and her papers. I’ll hate to confiscate it, because of illegal and unregistered modifications.” He paused for a beat. “Or we can play nice, you show me your ship, and I can make a judgment if we need her or not. If she can be of use to us, I could lease her for the mission, you get paid, and we can overlook any discrepancy in the ship’s registration.”

She had been about to snap back a retort that she probably knew her ship better than any person alive when he'd continued on blithely. He listed some of the things, but there were a few others he didn't know of, couldn't know of unless he'd known the designer of the Raptors or flown it himself. And the way he was going? That would never happen while she still breathed.

"Do you know how to play nice, or just how to jackboot across anyone and everyone in your way to get what you want?" she snapped, hands on hips as she glared at him. "I'm not endowed with a fleet of ships to pick and choose from and no-one flies Sting but me! You want to hire her? Sure. But you get me as driver and you go on the left, if you think you can handle it!" No-one threatened her ship, or her.

“I’ll do what I must to complete the mission and get my people back alive, Miss Jereldsen.”

He considered her counter proposal to stay on as the pilot, as he looked at her ship, ignoring the clear annoyance she wore on her face. MODs were tricky sometimes to fly, at least from his experience. Back when he was a junior grade, he co-piloted a confiscated MOD back to Picon. The controls were customized and non-standard, and they nearly collided with a merchant ship in orbit.

“Ok,” he turned to face Anika. “You can fly her, but first, was I right about your MOD?”

She tossed her head a little, taking the small victory while she could as she continued to fix him with a glare.

"She's a specialised design, yes, built specifically to test certain upgrades that were being considered for your precious Raptors. Some were included on them, some weren't."

Mainly because they were too expensive to include as standard features at the time, something her father had told her with a wink. "One of the benefits of being best buddies with the guy who has it all up here!" he'd told her as he'd tapped his head with a finger. "No-one like Al when it comes to putting a fast ship together, and hiding it!"

“Excellent.” he replied. “Then we have a deal.”

Kobe turned slightly toward the operator sitting on the lift tractor. “Deckman!” He shouted to get the man’s attention. “Move the Sting off the ready line, and take her to hanger thirteen.”

“Aye sir,” the operator reached down to start the lift tractor.

“Miss Jereldsen, you can go with your ship if you like, but I’m afraid you will not be allowed to leave the battlestar. Mission security.

“I’ll have someone arrange temporary quarters for you and a ration card.” He reached into one of his pockets on his flight suit to take out a note pad and pen. “I’ll let command know you had been kind enough to provide your ship and services. Someone will come to give you an initial brief.”

After writing a few notes, he again reached into another pocket, and pulled out a card with his name, and contact information. “If you need to get a hold of me, get in touch with me at air ops.” He handed her his calling card with the Colonial Forces emblem fully recognizable on it.

"What?? You're holding me prisoner?" She snatched the card he held out without even looking at it, instead staring at him with disbelief. "You can't do that! I'm not one of your pilots you can just order around! And what security? I don't know anything more now than when I landed, except that the bloody military still has jerks as officers who think they own the whole fleet!"

He kind of took some offense to being called a jerk, but he had been called worst. “You’re working for us now, we just hired you. I don’t have the time to give you all the details, but you’ve provided us with a solution to a problem.” He paused. “ Someone will brief you soon, I promise.” He left out that the mission was highly dangerous, and would put her in harms way. She might change her mind, and then someone will have to learn to fly her ship.

“And your not our prisoner. Consider yourself a guest, you just can’t leave the ship, not now, I’m sorry.” It was happenstance that her ship was there on the ready line when he returned. It was a perfect solution. They would not have to send a score of ships on the mission, and put others at risk.

"And what about my sister? She needs to know where I am!" Anika stormed, knowing Bethany would worry if Anika didn't arrive back on Shangri-La without some sort of contact. Her eyes narrowed a little, her fury still seething beneath the surface, and no less volatile, only held back by the thin veneer of civility being returned. "And where's J... Colonel MacKenzie?" she growled, for a brief moment wondering if he had anything to do with this but dismissing it fairly quickly. It didn't ring of something he would do, not even as a joke. He knew what Sting meant to her.

“Somewhere about the ship, I presume, he‘s a busy man.” How could he know, he had only arrived to Avalon himself. “You can write a message to your sister. We’ll relay it to her ship.”

“Hey, Slingshot,” he called out to pilot who was passing by, and took a few steps toward her.

“Yeah, Bojay.” she replied.

“Do me favor? Please keep our lovely guest, Miss Jereldsen some company.”

Slingshot took a look at the civilian pilot, and then came within earshot of Kobe and whispered. “She looks angry.”

He replied in the same manner. “It’s because she is, but you owe me one.”

“Yeah, sure thing, skipper.” She said in a normal voice, and smiled at their guest.

Kobe turned to Anika, “Lt. Lancelot, will show you around, till someone can come down to brief you, Miss Jereldsen. If you will pardon me, I have other things to attend to.”

Still glaring at the man Anika sized up the female pilot, returning her smile even if it wasn't particularly warm.

"More civilian ships being snared as fodder?" she muttered, arms now folded defensively across her body as she realised she wasn't going to be getting off the battlestar in the immediate future. Just that realisation made her stomach clench and a sudden wave of nausea washed over her. She'd been working on preparing herself to come over when Jake organised it, but to be held here, against her will, was bringing back too many vivid memories that she really didn't want to have.

Kobe turned round, and rushed off to CIC to inform Commander Burk of Sting and his intention to use it for the reconnaissance mission. A mission to make certain the Cylon Basestar was inactive and would not be an immediate threat to the next phase if the government approves of the salvage.

Slingshot walked with Anika, as they followed the Sting to Hanger 13 and to wait with her till further notice. She hoped it would not be long, because she was looking forward to a hot shower, after five hours of flight training.

Seeing Sting being towed off the hangar deck was making the reality of this all hit home, a lump forming in Anika's stomach. She shoved her hands into the pockets of her suit, wiping the sweat forming on them on the insides. It had been a long time since she'd been into any part of any military ship in the fleet other than the deck she'd arrive on. She focused on Sting, the chat from the other pilot only drawing a nod or other nondescript sound of acknowledgement from the civilian.

"Miss Jereldsen, are you sure you don't want to come through to the mess hall?"

Anika's eyes widened and she shook her head vehemently. "No, thanks, I'll stay with my ship," she said hurriedly. A simple shrug from the other woman who started talking with one of the deck hands left Anika to go across and lean against Sting's hull, the feeling sinking in that it was going to be a very long wait.

Cole smiled from across the hanger, having watched the exchange silently. He waited for Skyes to make his escape; he'd had enough of COs for the day.

He couldn't help but smile as he watched Anika tear into Kobe. It was something he wished he still had the right to do - but those are the breaks. Still, she wasn't quite doing it right. Most brass, he thought, got off on their command trips and he getting angry wasn't going to help her case. In fact, it was probably going to make things worse.

As the thoughts moved through his head he swaggered up towards her, duffel and guitar case still hanging off his thin frame. He offered her a casual, confident smile as he came up behind Anika.

"Never let 'em see you get angry like that. Like blood in the water."

The male voice suddenly sounding behind her made her jump, spinning around to face him, fear flashing across her face for a brief moment.

"I'd prefer to deal with sharks," she snapped, eyes narrowing as she took a step that gave her the security of Sting's hull against her. "At least you know what they're about."

He shrugged with a casual smile. "Fifteen years of service will do that, sweets."

He glanced behind her at Sting, sizing up both the ship and then the pilot. He paused for a moment before offering her a sweeping bow that tossed his wild hair about and rose again with a twinkle in his eye and a smirk upon his face, "An honor and a pleasure to meet you, ma'am. I'm Lt. Colton West, but most 'round these parts call me 'Vagabond.'"

He glanced from side to side before his smirk took on a more childlike quality, "Now, ma'am, are you sure they didn't decided to hold you here in an epic -and ultimately futile- effort to contain such titanic beauty and passion that has somehow found it's way into human form?"

"Look, if not going to offer your name you could at least let me buy you lunch." He reached into his pocket and pulled out his meal voucher and his voice became a sarcastic mockery of excitement, "C'mon! Her eyebrow arched, arms still folded across her body but more loosely now. "You know Colonel MacKenzie? She knew her friend was on bedrest till the babies were ready to be born but had no idea where she might be, and how to contact her. Slingshot turned her attention back to Anika from the deckhand she'd been chatting with. She pointed over to a nearby alcove in the bulkhead that functioned as a spot for the deck crews to do paperwork and various other administrative tasks.
