Some Time Away

She hadn't been there terribly long. She had none of the marks of a girl who'd spent overly long in a bar. She wasn't drunk, wasn't even mildly tipsy, despite the glass of amber liquid that sat half-empty in front of her. Still, Rosie looked a bit despondent as she dragged her finger through a shallow mist of moisture left by her sweating glass. She traced her name in the little puddle, then rubbed it away with the heel of her hand.

Long moments passed. What she thought about was anyone's guess, and if one had asked, Rosie herself wouldn't have been able to say. Lazily, her mind drifted amongst topics like a butterfly moving from flower to flower. If there was any sense of urgency, it would have been a bee. But Rosie wasn't really the bee type.

Her finger drew a curlicue, before she leaned back and rubbed the pattern out of existence again. Then she raised her glass and brought it to her lips, an action punctuated by the clinking of ice. She drained the remainder of her drink, and replaced it to the table. She used to love her Liberty. Now it just felt like an endless stretch of pretending, or at least that's the way she felt once she had a couple of drinks in her.

John had been on board to be ready to meet the rest of his team when they arrived by various shuttles at different times, dependent on when they were able to be relieved from their respective tasks. He'd been secretly excited when he'd received orders to ship immediately to the luxury cruiser Shangri-la and thought it more than a little amusing that his team's reunion was to happen there. "Three years has to have come to something," he'd muttered to himself when he'd seen some of the decks of the massive liner.

In his three years since 'C-Day' as they referred to it, Crash, Cylon, Critical, Crap-tastic, whatever anyone decided was appropriate at the time, he'd been on more ships in the fleet than he cared to remember, and most of them had been in the form of 'peacekeeper', at the direction of BSG Command. It had taken a while for them all to adjust, more used to going in to unknown situations and facing the 'enemy'. Now it was going into situations and mostly being regarded as 'the enemy', and having to deal with civilians. It had been decided early in the piece to split the unit so as to reduce the fear factor most civilians reacted with when confronted by a team of 'peacekeepers' who looked anything but that.

He'd dumped his kit into the quarters he'd been shown to and taken a walk around some of the areas he'd been told were being set aside for them to get themselves back into being a cohesive unit that could again operate as one. It didn't bother him he didn't know what the mission was, it was the way things had always been before. They were given details when it was necessary, as it never made much difference to their preparation anyway. So he checked over the range hastily set up for them and their weapons, and the other training areas locked off so they couldn't be accessed accidentally by any unauthorised personnel. It amused him a ship this size managed to stay together during the jumps they'd had to make from time to time, and wondered just how much it might have cost to actually take a holiday aboard before. "More than any grunt I know could afford," he murmured to himself as he'd made his way through the more populated decks where passengers and crew existed.

He finally found his way to a bar he'd heard was the sort of place he could relax and have an ale or three without feeling out of place. Approaching the bar he slipped onto a stool, ordered a drink and looked around.

At first, Rosie didn't even notice the newcomer. It was all the same thing--one day rolled into the next, the same faces littered the same bars. She tilted back her glass and chewed the ice inside. Then, finally, she let her eyes rest on the other who had approached, and realized that his was a face she'd never seen.

If nothing else, the novelty alone impressed her, and she leaned forward to rest her elbows on the bar. If she'd been the shy sort, she'd probably have ordered him a drink, or perhaps asked the bartender about him. She wasn't the shy sort.

"Hey, haven't seen you around before. How is that even possible?" she asked with a smirk.

"Big fleet with a lot of hiding places?" he answered, "though can't for the life of me imagine why I'd be hiding," he added with grin. He picked up the drink the bartender had put the down in front of him and raised it to her. "To new meetings," he said before taking a long sip.

She laughed. "But we haven't even met yet." Again, she raised her glass to her lips and crunched down on the ice within. Deciding that she might stay a little while yet, she gestured to the bartender for another drink. "So what's your name, Mr. Mysterious?"

"Better fix that then, hey?" he suggested, moving his stool closer and holding out his hand. "John Grimm, newly arrived passenger, and sometimes marine."

"Sometimes?"the young pilot lifted her newly deposited glass to her lips, took a small sip, and returned it to the bar. "Didn't know they were letting you guys pull part time."

She took the marines hand, shook, and added,"I'm Rosie. Temporary passenger, and all the time pilot."

John grinned. "Part time marine, most of the time 'peacekeeper' though it's more a glorified cop really," he explained as he shook her hand. "So this is where the pilots come to play is it?" he added, looking around. "Guess if you don't have any 'shore' to take shore leave on this is about as good as it gets, hey?" he joked.

"Something like that," she replied with half a laugh and only slightly more smile. "There aren't really too many places to go, and we rarely get time off. This is one of the easiest ships to get to off the Avalon..." She paused and took a quick sip from her drink.

"Gods, I've forgotten how to talk to strangers. I think I used to know small talk and stuff like that, but the last time I met someone new I was stumbling out of a totaled Raptor..." She smiled ruefully and tossed back another gulp of amber liquid.

"D'you do that often? Total Raptors that is," he asked, grinning as he sipped his ale.

"Just the one," she replied, her eyes darkening just slightly at the admission. Then, she laughed brightly and shrugged off whatever hint of melancholy had settled in that split second.

"I total Vipers now," she giggled.

John noticed the shift, something his father had taught him at a very young age. He grinned at the giggle and lifted his glass to her.

"Well, as a regular passenger aboard those Raptors can I say I'm pleased you've decided to move on to those little ones?" He gave her a wink, the humour evident.

She laughed again. "I was pretty pleased too, at first, but now I think I actually miss it. So don't get too relieved, I might get to fly you around soon after all."

"So long's your ship's able to fly again after we arrive you won't hear any complaints from me!" John grinned. He lifted his glass to her. "To good landings all round!"

A clink of the glass, and a wide ridiculous smile were her main responses, but she did add, "Any landing you walk away from is a good landing."

"That's what they say," John agreed. "So tell me, where do you go to get a good feed on this floating palace?"

She giggled again, and she might have been a little more conscious of how silly she sounded were it not for the booze. She crunched an ice cube between her teeth and replied. "Dunno. Anywhere, I guess. You said it, it's a floating palace. Quite a few restaurants."

"Probably not really up to some of the nosh houses I saw on my way here. Anywhere simple? Not really dressed for the grand ballroom!" he grinned, looking down at his casual attire. He'd seen some guests in full formal regalia on their way somewhere he figured he really didn't want to be.

"One of the lower levels has a pretty laid-back place. Military discount, too," she replied with a wink. "Wanna head down?"

"Sounds good to me!" he replied, downing the last of his ale and standing up. He'd noticed her giggling and was putting it down to her alcohol intake, given most pilots he knew weren't the 'giggly' type. To save her the embarrassment of maybe staggering he held out his arm in a formal manner, like the people he'd just spoken about.

"Would m'lady be ready to take a stroll along the deck to dinner?" he said in an over the top toffee-nosed voice.

"I'd be honored, sirrah," Rosie replied in her best Caprican accent (which wasn't very good, at that) and took his arm. She wasn't exactly staggeringly, stupid drunk--but she definitely had a decent buzz going, and well, it had been a long time since she'd seen a guy she didn't bunk with.

John grinned as she took his arm, giving the bar tender a wink as they made their way out of the bar in search of dinner.
