Hitching a ride
Dani had kissed Rhys goodbye on the cheek and lumbered her way down to the hanger deck to meet Anika. Her husband of one month had to be on shift in an hour and so couldn't be with her for the checkup with Dr. Zoticus a little later in the day aboard Shangri-La. Her own schedule was clear aside from doctor's visits, her last workday before starting maternity leave had been two days earlier and she was very happy that it finally happened. For one thing, it meant she didn't have to worry about trying to squeeze into her uniforms...even the fatigues were starting to get a little snug around the front.

Anika had agreed to give her a ride over to Shangri-La. for the visit, and she'd have lunch with both of the twins before making her way to the Doctor's office.

The young woman finally passed through the hatch to the hanger deck, and saw Anika hanging out near Sting a few bays down waiting for her. "Anika! Thanks so much for giving me a ride." She told the other woman, waddling up to the ship.

"Holy mothers!" Anika cried out when she saw the size Dani had grown to in the month since her wedding. "Just as well I'm not carrying too much freight or we mightn't've got off the deck!" she joked, holding her hand out to help Dani up the steps into the cabin.

"Ha ha," Dani laughed dutifully at the joke, well aware of how large she was getting. "Avalon will probably notice an increase in engine efficiency with me off the ship."

She gladly accepted the hand up, doing just about anything was hard these days, especially when she hadn't been able to see her feet in months! "Ooph!" she grunted, forcing herself up the steps.

"I swear that sometimes I think I can see the growth, it seems to be happening so fast."

The pregnant woman waddled toward the co-pilot's seat to sit down and strap herself in.

Anika nodded a curt thanks to the young deckhand, cast one last look around the hangar deck and climbed up into her ship, closing the door behind her. It was a combination of relief and a small twinge of disappointment that tweaked at her as she climbed into her seat. Disappointed that she hadn't seen Jake, but relieved she also hadn't seen, or been seen by Jake's guard dog colleague and friend, Major Simmons. She felt decidedly uncomfortable after the wedding and was fairly certain, from her women's intuition, that the major wasn't thinking of Anika or Jake's well-being when she considered Anika.

She looked up at Dani, realising the other pilot was looking longingly at the co-pilot's seat. "You sure you wouldn't be more comfortable back there?" she asked, indicating the passenger's seats behind with a jerk of her head. "The one on the left has a leg rest that folds out," she reminded her, "and is extra-wide for some of those pax I get that need that extra room, y' know?"

"I guess you're right," Dani concluded with obvious reluctance in her voice. Judging from the size of the seat she didn't think she'd really be able to squeeze herself in between the arms anyway.

"Guess they didn't have pregnant women in mind when they designed her, huh?" She asked her friend a bit wistfully before going to the passenger seat indicated and unfolding the leg rest.

She sat down with an audible sigh, glad to be off her feet again. Would this be the checkup that landed her on bedrest?

Anika huffed a laugh as Dani settled herself. "No sweetie, same as they didn't when they designed those little Raptors or even Vipers of yours," she replied, going through her pre-launch checks as she spoke. "Same designers." She glanced over her shoulder to see if Dani needed a hand with the harness. "It going to make it?" she asked, indicating the straps, "cuz I've some extenders there, in the locker next to your elbow."

"Ha! I don't think I would have been able to squeeze into a viper cockpit at four months, let alone the size I am now," Dani muttered, playing with the strap to see how far it would stretch over her distended abdomen.

"Nope, won't make it." She confirmed, and looked to the locker Anika indicated for the extenders. The woman gasped from a hard kick from one of the twins and turned her attention to her stomach for a moment. "Would you two knock it off in there? Your mother's trying to strap in here."

"Yeah, gotta have all hatches and harnesses secure before take-off you lot, so just settle and let mum get herself sorted!" Anika called out as her fingers ran across the switch panel, eyes travelling across the readouts. "They're asking if we're ready, they can slot us in now before a patrol comes in otherwise we'll have to wait," she asked Dani.

"I'm good," Dani called back, having found the straps and extended the length enough to secure herself into the seat. The twins had been doing that all day, and she wasn't sure what had gotten into them.

"If they can let us go now, let's take the slot."

Anika didn't waste any time, acknowledging the controllers and soon they were on their way, the bulk of the battleship receding behind them as they made their way out and toward the huge liner that had been bethany's home for eight years and hers for five.

The two women were giggling as they entered the restaurant, the journey from the hangar deck having proved to be a long series of apologies from various members of the crew, and a range of wide-eyed stares and open exclamations that had drawn more than one ridiculous retort from either Dani or Anika.

"You'd think some of them had never seen a pregnant woman before!" Anika laughed as they were met by her twin sister.

"What have you two been up to?" Bethany asked, looking from one woman to the other and unable to stop herself from smiling. "Mischief from the sounds of it!"

"Oh I wouldn't say that, would you?" Anika replied with mock haughtiness, arm now looped through Dani's from where she'd been supporting and assisting her friend earlier. Bethany leaned over and gave them both a kiss on the cheek, taking Dani's hands and holding them out as she studied her friend's rounded form. "Oh? And is this true Mrs Gaither?"

"Not mischief exactly," Dani replied, still calming down from the giggles as she returned the kiss on the cheek. 'Mrs Gaither' was still a title she was getting used to, but she liked how it sounded.

"It was just that everyone seemed to stop what they were doing and stare at me from the moment I stepped out of Sting until I got up here, not to mention the questions...and I thought it was bad the last time I was over here! Argh!"

"Then there was this one old lady...she had to have been over sixty at least," Dani glanced over at Anika and smirked. "We'd sat down for a rest stop on a bench and she came up and started playing twenty questions, then put her hands right on my belly." Dani had been tempted to slap the other woman away, but just hadn't been able to bring herself to do it because of the expression on the older woman's face.

"Anika was actually the one that came to my rescue."

Anika's face softened as she looked at Bethany. "You know Mrs Watkins," she said, the older woman a well-known character aboard the Shangri-la - she'd been a mother of 14 and grandmother 38 times over, her entire family lost in the attacks, her and her husband having been one of the passengers aboard the luxury liner when the attacks had happened. He had passed away from the shock and sadness some six months later.

It was clear to everyone that it was Mrs Watkins who had been the backbone of that marriage and she had been involved in helping organise the orphans and schools, arranging things in her no-nonsense but sometimes autocratic way. A self-confessed busy body she regarded everyone's business as her own and bore no malice towards those who didn't see it her way, but also let them know it.

"I promised that yes, she would be informed when Dani had the babies," she told Bethany. It had been a godsend when someone had come up with the suggestion that a record of all family ties and births and deaths was centralised and that Mrs Watkins could help out in that department, saving the military from having to expend personnel on it.

"Ah, smart move. Tha would have kept her at bay," Bethany nodded, looking at Dani. "Don't worry darling, she means well, just doesn't waste much time on the niceties. Then again, after having 14 children of her own, and 38 grandchildren..." She shook her head. "in that case I'm surprised you two have made it here already!" She led them across to the table she'd reserved for them for their meal.

"I know she meant well, my only worry was that she'd try and talk me to death. I think she was about to launch into a horror story about one of her daughters-in-law giving birth to twins when Anika distracted her long enough for me to make a getaway."

Dani rubbed her stomach, feeling very large and awkward. The constant stares and questions coming up to the restaurant had been tiring in addition to the trip itself.

Avalon's crew saw her every day, so her size while very noticeable wasn't something most people commented on or stared at. This had been something of a shock, even though she'd gotten a taste of it the last time she'd been here.

"She is a little forgetful sometimes, and if you're not careful she will tell you the story again, in detail, and glorious living colour if you're not careful." She pulled the chair out for Dani, plenty of room on that side on purpose and another chair beside her for her to lean against if she wanted.

"I've told Philo you're up here for lunch if he had any cancellations and was looking for you early," she added.

"Thanks for the warning," Dani replied, a mild look of fear in her eyes. "I've been getting birth horror stories for weeks now, along with people asking me if I'm overdue."

The young woman sat down with an audible sigh, glad to be off her feet once again. It wasn't so much that she was out of shape, it was that the babies took so much of her energy and she'd gained so much weight. The past few weeks it seemed if she walked more than ten minutes she was out of breath and looking for a place to sit.

As for Dr. Zoticus, Dani nodded at the word that he knew where to find her if he wanted to see her early. "Thanks Bethany, you always are hooked into the grapevine around here. You'd have made a good intelligence officer if you ever joined up."

Bethany smiled serenely at Dani's comment and checked that her friend was comfortable before sitting down next to Anika. "Ah, darling don't you know more deals and discussions take place in the ballroom than in the boardroom?" she joked, the reality of that joke greater than most realised.

Their meals had been arranged by Bethany, small light portions of nutritious meals to give Dani as much goodness without the bulk as possible. The first dishes were brought out as they settled and placed on the table, the waitress asking what Dani would like to drink.

The three women continued to catch up over the course of the meal, seeing what was going on in each other's lives since they'd last gotten together just before the wedding. Almost before they knew it an hour had gone by and the last of the dessert dishes was being carried away by Bethany's well trained staff.

"That was delicious Bethany, compliments to your chefs." Dani told her friend, smiling. She was so glad that she'd been able to squeeze in a visit before the doctor's appointment.

"Now if you'll excuse me a minute I think I need to visit the little girl's room." She pushed herself out of her chair with some difficulty and got to her feet...only to find her vision gray out and feel herself swaying very unsteadily on her feet.

"I feel dizzy all the sudden..." she complained, her tone a bit vacant.

Both women moved quickly, Anika a little more so given her lack of long dress to tangle around fast-moving limbs. She reached Dani first and grabbed the woman around her waist, supporting her as Bethany pulled the chair back round and positioned it.

Dr. Zoticus's morning appointments had gone quickly, culminating in a fourteen-minute consultation with a Mrs. Fox, a fifty-something widow who had almost weekly appointments in which the doctor would convince her that whatever cough or sneeze she had developed that week was not a sign of impending death. It had gone quickly, and well, and Philo was actually in rather upbeat spirits as he headed down to the restaurant where Bethany had told him the twins would be lunching with Daniella.

As luck would have it, he had just set eyes on the ladies, and was making his way to the table as he saw the twins helping a rather vertiginous looking Dani into a seat at the table. Not an alarmist by any stretch, Philo quickened his steps only slightly. It wouldn't do to bolt the last few steps and shake up the already-anxious lieutenant.

Still, he was there quickly. He hurried to the table and addressed Dani directly, forgoing any greeting. "Is everything alright? Are you feeling faint?"

"Give me a minute and it'll pass," Dani replied, sounding and appearing a bit dazed as she was helped back into her seat. "I've had a few dizzy spells recently, just never when I was trying to get up."

Her vision started to clear up but she still didn't feel 100%.

She tried to defuse the looks of concern and plastered a smile on her face. "I thought I was coming to you, not the other way around?"

Hopefully they wouldn't rat her out to Rhys, he was already a mother hen and she didn't want to think of what he'd be like if he found out she'd nearly fainted.

Bethany looked at Philo, very relieved he was there. As Dani did what was to be expected and tried to convince them all she was fine, Bethany gave Philo a look over the pregnant woman's head, clearly asking him if this was in fact alright, or if there was anything she could do.

The doctor was distracted, and he pressed his fingers to Dani's wrist to take her pulse. He checked her pupils, difficult without a light, but she was right, it probably was nothing.

Philo gave a half-hearted laugh. "I was ahead of schedule," he replied to her lighthearted comment. "Has this happened before, Dani? The dizziness?"

"A few times," Dani admitted. "I figured it was just the stress from work and since I was going on leave I didn't need to worry about it."

She knew her blood pressure had been on the high side for a while now and that he'd been concerned about it, but it hadn't been something that had put her on restriction so far.

"I just got up too fast, that's all." Dani wasn't sure she believed it herself, but that's the story she was going to stick to.

The doctor frowned. "Not likely," he replied simply. "That sort of thing is usually related to low blood pressure, not high, and well...do you think you can walk? I'd like to get you up to the office, but if you need a moment...?" He trailed off, his brow wrinkled in concern. It was only then that he noted the look that Bethany gave him, and he added, "It's probably nothing, but you know. Better safe than sorry."

"Oh," Dani frowned, even more worried now. She was a pilot not a medic, the only things she knew about medicine were basic first aid and flight related conditions. Pregnancy complications were something she relied on the docs to figure out and help her with.

"I think so," she tentatively pushed herself out of the chair, using both hands to push herself out. The dizziness was still there, but it wasn't as bad as when it had first appeared and seemed to be receding.

The young woman swayed just a bit but quickly steadied herself, ignoring the looks of concern from her friends and putting on a brave face. "I think I'll be all right..."

"Why don't you take a minute, Dani? I haven't had lunch yet, I can get something quick to eat, and then we can head up perhaps?" He smiled at the three women. "Assuming that you ladies don't mind if I join you for a short bit?"

If there was one thing he'd learned about military women since he'd become the fleet's resident doctor, it was that they weren't likely to let you know they were suffering until it was too late. The last thing he needed today was an emergency delivery because he'd forced a preeclamptic woman upstairs.

Bethany was already waving a waitress over once Philo has suggested he'd have lunch. "Of course not, Philo, please, sit down and we'll get you something immediately!" she replied, smiling at him to cover her concern for Dani. Looking at Dani a little more sternly now she tilted her head. "And you young lady are going to stay right where you are unless yoy let Niki or I help you, is that clear?" Anika nodded, ready to help Dani if she needed to go to the bathroom.

"Yes ma'am," Dani mock saluted. As long as Rhys didn't find out about the incident (assuming the doc didn't find anything later) then she was happy to let her friends fuss over her.

She turned to Anika and winked, "Come on then, I'd just as soon not pee all over Bethany's floor."

"You're all over reacting," Dani muttered as she and Anika made their way to the bathroom. "Whatever the problem is I'm sure the doc will figure it out and everything will be fine."

She was fairly certain that this incident meant bedrest was in her future, but she'd done well to avoid it for this long.

Philo smiled at Bethany, but it was not a secret that he watched Dani's and Anika's retreat to the bathroom with some interest. Once they were out of view, his attention went back to the woman at the table. "Thank you for all your help," he said with a wan smile. "You don't happen to know if this has happened before do you?"

"She certainly hasn't mentioned it," Bethany answered, her face now showing her concern. "All she's said is how hard it is to move around, and that she feels like an elephant." She looked across to where her twin and their pregnant friend were making their way toward the ladies room at a slow but steady pace. "Not that she really needed to mention it, a person would be blind not to notice!" She looked back at Philo. "She'll be alright, won't she? Her and the babies?" Bethany hadn't mentioned it to anyone except Anika but Dani's pregnancy was even more special to her because of the twins. She knew how much it meant to her to have a twin and hoped the two Dani would raise would enjoy the same close relationship she had with her sibling.

Philo nodded. "I have no reason to believe that things will turn out any way but wonderfully. We just might have to keep a closer eye on her than I think she'll appreciate. And, of course, it might still be nothing." He gave Bethany a pleasant sort of smile, even as his own mind wandered. Already he'd begun to run through various diagnoses, and he had to stop himself. Here he was, seated at a table having a nice lunch with an attractive friend, and all he could think about was getting up to his office? Still, he knew his mind wouldn't be eased until he got a chance to check everything out. Even if it wasn't a big deal, he had the feeling that Dani wasn't going to take bed rest--for lack of a better term--lying down.

"Anyway, don't worry yourself, Bethany. I suppose that's what I mean to say," added the doctor lightly.
