Kypros-Gaither Wedding Reception
Married. She was really married.

Dani couldn't help but stare at the ring glittering on her finger, the feeling of it against her skin was something she was going to have to get used to. She was keeping her own name professionally, and was still undecided whether or not she would take Rhys's name when off duty. They'd already decided that the children would have both their names - Kypros-Gaither - on their birth certificates once they came out into the world, but their mother was still trying to figure out the rest of it as she went.

The newly married couple walked hand in hand down the short corridor from Shangri-La's main dome toward the banquet hall where the reception was being held. The photographer had kept them busy after the wedding was over and now they were moving to join their guests to celebrate.

Dani squeezed the hand of her husband. It sounded right, even if the change in their status would take some getting used to.

Rhys lifted Dani's hand to his mouth, kissed a spot on the inside of her wrist. He had never been so...content before, possibly not even in the days before the war. The gold band on his finger was solid evidence that things had fallen into place, become orderly, or at least manageable. Perhaps he had not expected to have a ready-made family this soon, but the knowledge of impending fatherhood rested easily on his wide shoulders. He had never been a particularly religious man, but if the gods did answer prayers then he was thankful.

They would spend a few more days on-board the Shangri-La for their honeymoon, then return to duty. He hoped she wasn't feeling too ungainly to enjoy it. He'd never loved anyone so much.

"Kypros-Gaither," he said, leaning down a little so his mouth brushed his new wife's ear. "Gotta say, I'm liking the sound of it already."

Dani smiled up at him and stood up on her toes to kiss him back. "It does have a nice ring to it, doesn't it?"

She still wasn't sure if she was going to use it, but it was growing on her.

The couple approached the banquet hall, and were spotted by the staff. As they entered the hall they could hear the DJ announce the arrival of "Mr. & Mrs. Gaither." into the room.

Casting a professional eye one more time over the room Bethany turned to clap as the DJ announced the newlywed's arrival at the reception. Her smile widened even more when she saw the glow on Dani's face and the almost smug smile of happiness on Rhys's.

As they made their way through to the bridal table she checked again to make sure that there was non-alcoholic champagne on the table and that the glasses were already poured.

Jilleen got up from her chair and stood to clap her hands after the DJ made the announcement of the couple’s arrival. She watched as the newly married couple made their way to the head table. She had been most impressed with the set up of the reception, and from the look of it someone had put a lot of effort into the endeavor.

She felt a little sorry for Dani having to have a wedding in her present stage of pregnancy, looking very over-sized for a bride. It was too bad. Some places would look down on a wedding with a pregnant bride. In the more rural parts of Aerilon, such weddings involved persons with shotguns.

Sinclair, for her part, felt no pity over the newly-wed's size. Being pregnant was a healthy thing. It was hardly the same thing as, say, being amputated or having burns amd society's preconceptions had been forced to change a great deal.

All in all, the Admiral had welcomed the chance to attend, as it both gave her a chance at honouring a serving member of the fleet, plus, was an opportunity to ground herself.

She had made her way over to place her gift with the others, smiling as the box was given over and then went back to reacquainting herself with the crowd, beverage in hand.

Once Dani had a chance to get off her feet for a little bit and get a small meal into her, the young woman got back up on her feet and started to circulate among her guests.

The first person she sought out was the guest of honor. "Admiral," she greeted the senior officer respectfully. "Thank you so much for attending, we're glad to have you with us today."

Vosca was not the most... Sociable of individuals. Nonetheless, it was an important ceremony for an important colleague. A fellow veteran in her squadron and one who had see nuch combat with her.

It was unlikely, to say the least, that she would ever find herself at the centre of such a ritual. Vosca Tarix? A blushing bride? A satirical cartoonist's dream, perhaps, but probably not destined to be reality, any time soon.

Not that it prohibited her from, at the arrival of bride and groom into the room, raisiing her glass with all the rest, in a toast of honour.

After resting at the table where Jilleen had come to say her farewells, Dani got up and made her way toward the bar where Vosca Tarix still lingered.

"Dagger," Dani decided that rank wouldn't do in this situation, but still wanted to be respectful of her comrade's higher status. The other woman's callsign was a good compromise. "Thank you so much for attending, I'm glad you and the rest of the squadron could make the ceremony."

Josiah stood quickly as they entered, subconsciously he straightened his tux. Clapping loudly as the couple entered the room. Had this been 28 months ago, he would have immediately discharged one of them from the service. This blatant breach of regulations would have dictated just that.

Time seemed to slow. Each person in the room moving in a very slow motion as the thoughts in retrospect captured Josiah.

Thoughts, mental pictures, and memories quickly filled his mind of a time past. When his wife was pregnant with his first child. His daughter. A beautiful woman in her own right, he couldn't help but think she was even more beautiful than ever, when she was pregnant with both of their children.

Now, here he stood. Watching Dani. Absolutely beautiful and glowing in her own right. Pregnant with children. Not just child. He couldn't help but envy the Chief, just a little bit. 'Your a very lucky man, Chief.' Josiah, said quietly.

Time assumed the norm, as the crowd that was gathered clapped upon their entrance. As the crowd quieted, they remained standing as the couple stood before them all. Patiently they awaited their speech.

Public speaking had always made Rhys feel uncomfortable. One of the reasons he liked working in the hangar almost full-time was that a lot of talk wasn't really necessary. You could either grunt or move your hands, and that usually served to get your message across. Looking out across the sea of faces, some familiar, some not so much, he could feel his ears reddening a little.

"Ah..." He cleared his throat, tapped the microphone in front of him so that it gave off some feedback. Wince. "I just wanted to thank all of you for coming today. This is a better turn-out than I expected. I guess in some ways the Fleet really is a family. Makes me feel like I'm really a part of things to see all these people." There were quiet chuckles from the gathered crowd as the mechanic rubbed the back of his neck, clearly self-conscious.

"I'm sure that my lovely new bride would like to say a few words, so I won't bend your ears too much. Uh, just...to all of those who are here, and even to those who aren't, I want to say thank you for helping make this day happen." Rhys squared his big shoulders, adjusting his uniform jacket so that it hung correctly on his frame, acknowledged Admiral Sinclair with a crisp nod.

"Congratulations, Chief!" It was one of the other noncoms from the deck crew, and a whistle followed the exclamation as several people laughed. Rhys grinned, then leaned down to kiss Dani on the cheek. His wife. Life did go on, apparently.

Jake smiled and clapped again as Dani let go of the microphone and people began mingling again.

It had been a bittersweet day for him, walking Dani down the aisle and watching her get married. The whole thing reminded him of his own wedding, over a decade earlier, and the wife he'd never see again. But Dani was so radiant, glowing with happiness and pregnancy, it was hard to be melancholy at such a happy event.

He'd been seated across from Anika, and Jake suspected that someone was playing matchmaker. Not that he minded, the events of the previous night had made certain things abundantly clear.

She'd not been fully sure she was going to even make the wedding--after all, weddings weren't exactly her style--but Rosie had ultimately caved. Sure, it had taken a few fingers of ambrosia, but her curiosity had finally gotten the better of her and she'd decided to show. Besides, it was a perfect opportunity to see how round Kypros had gotten lately.

As she knocked back her third glass of champagne, Rosie did meet Dani's eyes. She gave her a sort of devilish smile as she lowered her champagne flute to the table once more. She hoped that her look said Better you than me, despite the irrational pang of jealousy that shot through her like a bolt of lightning. What exactly she was jealous of was a whole new question altogether, and one with which she was not entirely comfortable. The young pilot scratched absently at her nose, and reached out to pluck another glass off a passing waitress's tray.

Dani met Rosie's eyes and caught the funny smile the other pilot gave her. She could imagine what was going through Cupcake's mind, especially since the gown Dani wore did absolutely nothing to minimize her swollen midsection which seemed to be expanding exponentially these days.

She hadn't actually seen her much since she'd moved into family quarters with Rhys, but it was good to see the other woman again. Dani nodded in return and lifted her glass in salute to her squadmate.

Alice felt...she didn't know what she felt. She'd watched Chief Gaither and his new bride exchange vows as if she were in a dream, and she looked down at the glass of champagne in her hand before taking a sip. She had been that happy once, that content. The emotion wasn't so much sadness right now, it was more just like being wistful. Better that way, easier to manage.

The room was a little warm, and she pulled at the collar of her uniform a little. She wasn't used to these clothes either, having become much more accustomed to civvies when she wasn't in her work coveralls. Had to make a good showing, though, because this was a special occasion. Even in these harsh times, life continued.

Even for her.

Bethany circlulated around the room, greeting people she knew, and welcoming those she met who hadn't been to Shangri-la before, ensuring they were comfortably accomodated and enjoying themselves. She also kept a close eye on Dani, wanting to make sure her friend didn't tire herself out too much.

Dani was making the rounds herself, greeting her and Rhys' guests. She was determined to talk with each of them, thank them for joining them on this special day and spend a minute or two chit chatting with them. She hoped Rhys was doing the same, it was important to show respect to one's guests. The Admiral had been thanked, and she intended to visit with Vosca before the night was out.

The babies were kicking up a storm and her back ached, but she had one more person to thank before she let herself take a break.

And there she was...

"Bethany, there you are. I've been looking for you."

She could hear the music from reception room from out in the large balcony that overlooked the landscape of the main bio-dome. She had come out to have a cigarette and to get away for a break. There were others who had come out as well to smoke, as the new bride was pregnant and there were little notices that smoking was not allowed. It was funny to her how many people smoked cigarettes these days, back before the war the trend was living a smoke free life. She had quit for a time, but only started again after the first few days of the war. There was something to it, something that helped with the stress.

Jilleen had missed the traditional first dance to get away to the balcony. She did not think it matter if she was there to watch, she did not consider herself that close to the newlyweds, their were not exactly family to her. When she returned to the room, she caught site of Jake, alone finishing off a pint of beer. The music was not as loud as the night clubs, so shouting would not be necessary to hold a conversation with someone. Jilleen walked toward her friend with a smile.

"Jake aren't you the handsome devil tonight." She was by his side in her dark green evening dress. "I'd always thought you looked good in those dress grays."

Jake looked over at his friend, bemused. "Now you say that. I remember you thinking differently the first time we put them on before we were commissioned."

Anika was off chatting with her sister and Dani, leaving Jake to his own devices momentarily. He'd already gotten one dance out of the pretty civilian pilot and intended on dancing with her some more before the evening was through.

"That's a pretty dress, looks good on you."

"Thank you," She paused to be admired by Jake. "Its a little something I found." The fact was she had taken it out of the wardrobe that had belong to the daughter of Councilman Sertorius who had never made it for the cruise. The daughter was the same size as Jilleen and most of her stuff fit.

"Yeah, back then before you became a real officer, I thought you were," she shrugged her shoulders. "...I didn't like you so much." She laughed. "Nah, I liked you, just thought you needed to tone down the whole I am a Mackenzie thing." She placed her hand on his shoulder and looked into his eyes. "You're cool now, Jake." She then pretended to dust off some imaginary lint of his shoulder.

Jake laughed so hard at the comment that he had to lean on Jilleen for a moment until he got control of himself. He was still chuckling as he wiped his eyes. ''Well thanks Jill, its good to know I'm in with the cool kids now."

The Academy had been a rough experience for Jake. The instructors had been tougher on him than they had on most of the others due to his heritage, and truth be told he'd needed to have his head shrunk a little when he'd first arrived.

He looked around, "Whose you're date tonight? He out in the smoking lounge or did you fly solo?"

"Solo." She had come alone as she was not in any romantic pairing, but after last night with Colonel Materson should could have easily been with him except it was a bit complicated professionally now. "How about you? Did you bring Tarix to the party." She laughed.

"That'd be 'No'," Jake smirked. "This is one social function I didn't have to order Dagger to attend. I think Kypros is trying to play matchmaker for me though, set me across from Anika Jereldsen. Not that I'm complaining, mind you."

"The twin?" She asked. They had been on the watch list when they learned about the Cylon clones, and their names were known to those on the staff. She looked around if she could see her, but did not find her in the crowd. "Well, Danella is a hopeless romantic. Love, love, love." She faced Jake and poked a finger at him. "Don't get trapped. You see what she did to the poor chief."

She wasn't really worried about that, she known how devoted Jake had been to Bridget to find himself into any trouble. Its was funny how much she had been against the relationship when he was courting her best friend back on Tauron. She believed back then that Jake was not worthy of her friend's devotion. She had tried her best to break them up, but in the end she was glad she failed. He had made Bridget happy.

"I don't see Gaither complaining any. I don't think I would either if I were him." Jake shrugged with a smile. "As for Anika, we'll see what happens one way or the other. She's a very pretty woman and we do have a fair amount in common." He left out the events in the tropical dome the previous evening, no one needed to know that but he and Anika.

It had been three years now, three long years without Bridget. It had been a hard decision for him to mkae, but he'd decided some time ago that he needed to move on. Bridget was gone and she wasn't coming back.

"You are right about Kypros though, she is a hopeless romantic. I'm surprised she hasn't tried to set you up with someone."

"I scare her sometimes," she winked. The song that was playing was whining down. "Will you dance with me Jake?"

"Since you asked nicely, yes." Jake responded, a twinkle in his eye. The duo headed over to the dance floor as the DJ selected another song. "I don't think you've ever asked me before, you know."

In all the years they'd known each other they'd never gotten around to dancing with each other. Not even at his wedding.

"Are you sure?" She wondered if that was true as they made their way to the dance floor. "All this time. Its not like you left Bridget's side to give me a chanced to ask," she placed her hands on his shoulders as they got on the dance floor. "I do remember that we danced at my wedding reception." She remembered. "You wore a tuxedo."

"That's right, I remember now." Jake nodded as he put an arm at the small of her back and took her hand in his. "All the groomsmen were supposed to wear tuxes rather than dress greys, since not everyone was in the military. You were a very pretty bride, and Bridget's bridesmaid gown actually was something she was willing to wear afterward." He chuckled at the memory.

"I'd forgotten."

"I did let her choose the gowns for the bridesmaids, she had such a good eye for fashion. She even picked the tuxedos," she followed Jake's lead as they danced with the rest of guests. "The last thing I wanted was a bunch of uniforms." Her wedding was held back home on Aerilon, there were lots of guests invited, many were friends of the family.

She sighed, "Its too bad the fairytale did not last." Five years after the wedding, her marriage to Lucius had ended in separation and then divorce. "Now you and Bridget. I envied that you two had such a long romance." Jilleen laid her head against his shoulder. "I'm glad I failed from keeping you two apart. She really loved you."

"I loved her too," Jake responded quietly, sighing as well. "It wasn't always easy, there were times where we fought tooth and nail, but the love never went away."

He shook his head to try and banish the bad memories. "And you didn't really have a shot at keeping us apart. Once Bridget put her mind to something there was no stopping her."

Anika saw Jake dancing with the woman her sister had met during the tournament as she talked with another of the party at the table. The looks she'd been receiving earlier from the woman had made her wary and a little uncomfortable. When they left the floor she shrugged internally and turned her attention back to the other person who was still talking about something to do with growing food on the surface of planets they found, returning at a later time to harvest it if they were jumped by Cylons.

At the bar

Jilleen found a gap at the crowded bar. “Bottle of water, please” she waved at one of the busy bartenders who was passing. He reached into the cooler and pulled out a few re-usable bottles of aged ale, and one clear small plastic bottle of cold water.

“How much?” She was about to open her small purse.

“No charge for water,” said the bartender as he moved on.

Jilleen took out a cubit coin and left it on the drink line for the bartender who passed those bottles of ale to a waitress at the end of the counter. “Thanks,” she said unsure if he heard her.

As she twisted off the cap of the bottle, she noticed who had come by her side to order a drink at the bar. “Captain Tarxi. Fancy seeing you here, at an actual social. Did you lose a bet? ” She meant to be cruel as she was still upset about Jake’s romantic intentions with another woman, and partially to see if she could stir something up in the pilot.

A bemused look was more shot, than passed, her way. She was well aware of the jokes about her personality, but never sympathised with them. If anything, she looked upon such displays as an annoyance. An attempt to ferment discontent amongst the ranks. Unlike some, she did not choose to simply forget about them, when heard spoken by those lower than her rank. Instead, she sometimes called them aside for some opportunistic... Re-education.

Simmons, however, could in no way be regarded as a subordinate. Therefore, internally bristling at the comment, Tarix maintained a cool exterior and replied with a succinctly neutral, "Good day to you, too, Major."

After seeing Dani settled at a table of people who promised to look after her Bethany relinquished her role as 'mother hen' and made another circuit of the room. There were a number of people there she knew, who'd been to Shangri-la for either conferences, or recreational leave over the years, but it surprised her that there were also faces she wasn't familiar with. Of a fleet of ships such as theirs was it was strange how there were still people who'd never left their original ships.

Familiar Faces

Josiah picked up the guitar case that sat next to his chair. Placing it upon his lap he unlocked the clasps that held it shut. Hearing his name he nodded and smiled at a couple of the more junior officers that had come over from the Avalon.

One familiar face caught his eye for a moment. He watched Jilleen make her way to the bar. Quietly he debated whether he should join her or not, especially after last night. He was quite unsure if she felt as awkward or strange as he did.

Drawing in a breath he was about to make the decision to have a drink with her when another Lady crossed his path. He racked his brain to remember her name. She was the proprietor of a couple of the bars and clubs on board the luxury ship. Bethany, he thought was her name. Still unsure he called out to her. "Bethany?"

So it might have been wrong of her to take out her frustrations on someone else. It had been a long two days and probably a mistake for her to go without semerald today. It had been a bit of a roller coaster ride with her emotions. It was suppose to be a happy day, except it had stirred up some dark emotions for her.

She saw Jake dancing with Anika. The woman in his arms might be a wonderful person for all she knew and maybe even be right for him, but it hurt at the moment. Jilleen had known Jake for almost over fifteeen years now, and nearly all that time with the exception of the last three years, he had been with Bridget. She just did not know how terrible she would have felt about seeing him with another woman. She realized it might only be a fling, nothing serious, but it hurt none the less.

Her eyes came away from the couple on the dance floor and on to Daniella who was sitting at the head table resting. She did not think she could stay for fear she might cause another scene, this was Daniella’s special day. She would say her good byes. She put on a happy face.

Jilleen sat in the next chair. “Daniella, congratulations, I’m so happy for you.” She placed her hand over the brunette’s hand. “Thank you for inviting me.”

A Song for the Newlyweds, From the XO
[info]josiah_cobra

Josiah slowly stood, clapping with the crowd at the choice in song the DJ played.

It wasn't so much the crowd that bothered him. It was the announcements. Presenting him like some glittery superstar.

In Josiah's mind. He played fairly well. Nothing on the level of musicians he admired. The ones who were gifted with talent held a special place in his heart. Though he strived for the same perfection. He had years ahead of him in practice, and shaping his talent and gifts, before he, in his opinion, came anywhere close to their level.

Seeing the DJ take the mic, he was fuming, inside. As he knew the man would make some sort of spectacle of his presence.

Behind the DJ on the stage the other members of the band patiently waited for Josiah.

"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE!"

Silence fell across the room. Save for Josiah's quiet whisper. "Frak sakes." Said through gritted teeth.

Silence fell across the room. Save for Josiah's quiet whisper. "Frak sakes." Said through gritted teeth.

"<We have a very special guest tonight. Just for you Rhys, Dani, Mister and Missus Gaither?>."

The DJ looked around the room. <"When I was asked to coordinate the musical aspect of this wonderful, beautiful celebration, I had no idea, no clue, as to what slections of music to play for you guys.">

<"Honestly, I knew nothing of Rhys or Dani, nor anyone else within this circle... But! After meeting you two, my job became much, much easier... I'm hoping that you all are enjoying this celebration of life and union.">
Josiah applauded with the rest of the guests, some yelling and whistling.

<"Oh, it gets better! Yes, it gets better!">

Josiah rolled his eyes, leaning up against the bulkhead behind him. "Come on, entertainer boy, get to it." He said quietly.

<"It was only yesterday when a particular man approached me and made a request that he and his band play a song he had picked just for you two.">

Gesturing to Rhys and Dani.

<"When this man, came into my office, introduced himself and auditioned a piece of this certain song he wished to play, well... Suffice it to say, I couldn't resist.">

<"I proudly present, the Executive Officer of the Battlestar Avalon, Colonel Josiah Masterson!">

Standing on the stage, in full dress uniform, he peered through the spotlight as the crowd clapped and cheered.

Nodding and smiling he spoke into the mic. "Thank you." Shading his eyes from the spotlight he peered into the crowd. "Ok where are you two. Ahh, there you are. Come forward. Keep coming, don't be shy. There you go." He said as he coaxed them onto the floor.

"Now. A very wise man once told me that if a gentleman doesn't feel the way that the words of this song so truly convey..."

Looking around at the band behind him he chuckled. "Ruddy poet eh?"

"Honestly. Rhys, Dani... Yes, I think on this night we can dispense with the formalities...."

He watched the smiling couple. "Times have changed. You have proven this and sent that message very loud and clear... More than that... You have proven that your love... Your feelings, your emotion is much stronger than anything else in this universe."

"I am honored to know each of you apart, and now unified by the blessing of marriage."

"Dani.... The first time I see one of your young ones playing in a Viper or a Raptor, you and I shall have a chat."

Shifting his gaze to Rhys, he carried on. "Same goes with you Rhys... By the God's if your children are the first to fix the faulty secondary cooling pump back in Engineering 'C,' at the ages of two..."

Josiah jokingly shook a finger at him.

"Now... Back to where I started... Rhys, this song has held a special place in my heart, from the first time I listened to it... This piece speaks of the perfect example of just how a man.... A man whom truly loves his partner and best friend... Should feel, each and every moment of each and every day..."

Reflecting back to what he had told Bethany, he chuckled quietly. "Now... My uh... Late wife told me once that I was never blessed with the gift... Of choosing the perfect song for the perfect setting..."

Shifting his eyes back to the couple he nodded slowly. "The original song is called 'Suspicions.'" (Eddie Rabbit)

"However, the boys and I added our own... Touch and flavor to it so, Rhys, Dani. This is for you..."
