Scoop
Who: Vicki, tag for Selina
Where: Vicki's apartment
When: Night
What: Vicki debates her latest story

She had the research set out on her desk, next to her laptop. It was research she wasn't exactly supposed to be doing, into the finances of Raymond's company, the Wayne Enterprises take over. Something was definitely wrong, Vicki just couldn't place her finger on it, though her nose was itching like crazy that there was a story in there somewhere, more than what Raymond was saying, and her grand expose was at a standstill. Her new editor wanted to let that dog lie while she continued to do research on the woman, this Selina Kyle; he told her that was where the real story was. Maybe it was true. She couldn't tell anymore.

She rubbed her tired eyes and wrapped her silk robe tighter around her body, switching the desk lamp off and sighing as she stumbled off to bed. She was hardly unbiased, and God it was bothering her. She slipped between the sheets thinking of Bruce, staring up at the ceiling of the penthouse as she thought about all of this, her eyelids closing slowly. She could drag the woman's name through the mud, but what would that get her? She'd be petty, and Bruce would hate her for it. But what if she really was taking advantage? But that wasn't why she was doing it, was it? Too many questions and it was too late to think them all. She drifted into sleep.

Selina was getting less and less pleased with this Vicki Vale. She had been willing to let bygones be bygones at first. Her past as a streetwalker wasn't untrue, while she figured it must've been a damn slow news day for that to be considered front page material. But she'd told Bruce not to hurt the Gazette or Vicki on her account. Why bother? It wouldn't change the fact that the story was out there, and anyone who recognized her was going to see that bruised face superimposed over her now.

But this was too much. She'd seen the quote from Raymond in the paper before she'd gotten a call from a very bored-sounding individual who told her she was being investigated. The cops didn't want to have anything to do with it, so Raymond was clearly paying someone with what little money he had left to dig into her life. She was just about done now, especially considering the lack of integrity in using Raymond's clearly insane babblings as soundbites.

It had taken a couple of hours of pacing and online research before Selina came up with a plan and felt ready to carry it out. She waited patiently for Vicki's light to go out. Waited even more patiently until she was sure even a light sleeper would be out by now. Then she crossed from the opposite building, where she'd been watching the window, and to the top of Vicki's apartment. She climbed deftly to the window and cut a big enough hole in the glass to undo the lock.

She crept into the apartment, then paused. Would Vicki be a fighter? Yeah, probably. With mace or some shit under her pillow from living in a place like Gotham. There was definitely that chance. She'd have to make this quick and perfect then.

She leaped and came down on top of her, shoving Vicki back against the bed, locking her arms at her sides and pinning her legs, all with strong thighs and calves that she was pretty certain would be like a vice to someone who felt as soft as Vicki did. She let her claws graze Vicki's throat so she'd know they were there, so she'd know not to move or fight.

"Don't move a muscle, or you'll be spouting blood all over this room," she purred softly in her ear. "I saw the story you've been running about Raymond Industries. The money? You have the story wrong, and I'm prepared to set it straight. Do you want an exclusive from the Catwoman herself? Say 'yes' if you do."

The gun was under the pillow, just inches away from her pinned hand, but she knew if she even tried to reach for it, this unpredictable element could do anything. she hadn't screamed, to her credit. Vicki had never been much of a screamer. Well, there had been that one time with the Joker, but who could blame her for that? And that other... Oh, damn! Why did it always come back to that, the thing she tried to suppress. That... 'save me, Batman!' instinct.

She didn't try to hide her fear; that was useless. Anyone would be scared in her place. But she did get a defiant look in her eyes, in the set of her mouth. "It's my editor's story," she said stubbornly. "I just want to print the truth. And if... 'Catwoman' gives me that, then, yes, I want that exclusive."

Selina let a smile spread over her face. "I thought you might. Good girl. Now... I figure you must have your own version of home security nearby. Don't go for it. I'll have you down again before you can get to me. Rest assured, that's not boasting; it's truth. I'm going to get up. And I want you to rise slowly. Get whatever you need to take all this down. And we're going to have a nice talk."

She slunk off her of then and to her feet, watching Vicki very carefully, stepping back fluidly to give her room. "No funny business, red..." She moved toward a nearby chair, her eyes never leaving Vicki, and sliding into it, curling up comfortably and yet sharp-eyed.

"There's a .45 under my pillow," she told the Catwoman as she slid out of bed and quickly made a grab for her robe, not much of a covering but it'd have to do. "And a .22 in the drawer of the table next to the door. You learn to be careful when you... get involved with certain elements. Just so we're square. I should probably turn off my silent alarm before the GCPB arrives, too, don't you think? Smart glass from Wayne Enterprises, ain't that something? Too expensive to sell it, one of Fox's pet projects but... a friend installed it. For safety." She held her hands up as she moved to a keypad and punched in a code.

She held up a vocorder and waved it. "Unless you'd rather not have your voice on the record," she offered, feeling the thrill of a story starting to build in her blood like adrenaline. This is why she did what she did. "I can do shorthand, too; a pencil and my yellow pad would do well, but I'd prefer to tape our conversation. Take that how you will." She sat at the edge of the bed.

"If it's all the same, let's skip the recorder," she said. "When you publish this conversation, and I know you will, the cops will want to analyze the tape, and I'd rather they didn't." She smirked. "I'll talk slowly."

She snuggled her bottom into the chair where she sat and sighed. "Where to begin," she mused. "First things first, I don't appreciate someone else being accused of a crime I committed. It feels a bit too much like someone else taking credit. I'm the one who took the money, and they won't be able to trace it. I welcome them to my wild goose chase, but they'll be sorely disappointed. I don't know why he'd accuse his little secretary, considering it was clearly the work of a seasoned cat burglar such as myself."

She smiled wistfully and tilted her head at Vicki. "Questions so far? You are the interviewer, after all."

Oh God, where to start?! She tapped the eraser of her pencil against her puckered lips as she thought. It would be so easy: 'Do you have any affiliation with Wayne Enterprises or was it pure coincidence that your theft made it easier for Bruce Wayne to acquire LINK Corp.?' It'd be simple and obvious to make the connection, in her mind at least: two people who dressed in their pajamas and ran around at night.

"Was Raymond selected at random, or was there some motivation? All my sources are confidential, by the way," she assured her. "Though, since you seem to be treating this as you... coming out party, I think you'll want to be... credited?"

"I will want to be credited," she nodded slowly. "Let it be known that Catwoman herself said she perpetrated the crime. There'll be no question then on whether it was true.

"As for motivation, I don't have a lot of love for the rich," she smirked. "They have what I want after all. And most of them get it via nefarious means. I especially like to strike at the worst of them, and rest assured Raymond is not exactly a pillar of the community. Did you know that he goes through office staff like Kleenex? Look up his personal records and you'll find reports of abuse and sexual harassment from most of the women who've left. Personally, I consider myself a patron saint to women everywhere. So the idea that this piece of filth was using women, forcing himself on them, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

"And there are the shady business deals. He invested in child labor for one. Can you imagine anything more despicable? And the company wasn't exactly green either. He didn't care where his resources came from, so long as he got them. And had the gall to go on television and call Raymond Industries a company that cares. Sure, about themselves."

"The waste, in the swamps!" Vicki said excitedly. "I've been trying to tie it to LINK Inc., but the research always goes mysteriously missing! Honestly, I don't know how many on the editorial stuff were getting the payoff from him. He can't afford it nowadays, but when all of this stuff comes out--" When; Vicki wasn't going to be silenced this time! "--there going to have some major egg on their faces!

"So, this was just you alone?" she asked a little skeptically. "Bruce Wayne... had nothing to do with it." Please say no. "His acquisition of the company was... coincidental? Or was he tipped off." Please say yes. Damn, she was conflicted. Why, after all the hurt, did she still want to protect him when everyone else around him did an adequate job of doing that themselves.

Catwoman smirked at her. "Run Raymond through the mud. Please, please do. I'll read the paper with a smile the next time I do."

She hesitated maybe a moment too long. Because she knew the answer to that. That was Bruce swinging his cock around a little but for her behalf, but she couldn't say that. "I imagine," she began slowly, "that it was simply a smart business venture. The company was going under thanks to yours truly, and Raymond was desperate for cash. So Wayne bought him out. I can see that. Whoever tipped him off, it wasn't me."

Vicki regarded Catwoman for a moment and then shrugged. "The man has good business sense; we'll chalk it up to that." No affiliation. Even though they were both costumed... whatevers. What, did Vicki think there was some sort of club they all went to to talk shop? And anyway, no matter how she still hurt, how confused her feelings were, would she ever really accused Bruce of inside trading, of a sort? I won't protect him, she promised herself, if he's involved in anything like it, but I won't take him down if the evidence is tenuous enough to begin with either.

"And Miss Kyle is being targeted because of her association with Wayne," Vicki said thoughtfully, though she thought there must be more to it; she couldn't exactly call him up and ask for a quote, but Lucius would probably be happy to give her one. "Is this... all about Raymond, or do I get the exclusive on the Catwoman, too? Or just... Catwoman, which ever you prefer. 'I am Catwoman, hear me roar'? You're an insider; that'll be protected. But is there any statement you'd like to give?"

"You just want to know more about me, I get the feeling," Selina laughed. "And... just Catwoman will do nicely. But you must see that giving too much away would be giving myself away. I can't exactly do that. But if it whets your appetite to talk about me, we can. So long as you understand the information I can give you is limited."

She refrained from even reacting to "Miss Kyle", letting nothing show. Though beneath the surface she wanted to explode and tell her that, yes, she was well aware she was being targeted for her association with Bruce, and who's fault was that?

"Obviously!" she assured her quickly, for a moment her heart racing at the thought of losing not just the Raymond story but this new, juicy one. "It's just that it's not every day that someone like me gets to interview a masked... Well, what would you call yourself? You're not a vigilante, or one of the Arkham crowd. Gotham's going to go nuts with the news. I don't like sensationalism--" It wasn't a lie! She truly didn't. It didn't mean she didn't write it, especially when the editor promised her the front page, her name on that large byline. There had been a time when she would have scorned it altogether, but she felt jaded now. Tired. And whose fault was that, Vicki, if not your own? "--but Gotham wants to know! You obviously stole from Raymond as justice? Revenge? I don't know, and it's your place to tell me, but what about others? Are you a cat burglar? Just give me something, a... quote, that's all. I won't even include your likeness!"

"I'm a thief," she said with a light shrug. "Yes, a cat burglar. I don't fight for justice and the American way, but I'm not crazy, rest assured. I just like... shiny things."

She chose her words carefully. "Not revenge. I just like to be sure that the people I hit deserve it. But don't call me some cat-themed, female Robin Hood. Because I've not been known to share my spoils. Still there is something satisfying in knowing I brought a very nasty man to his knees."

She was feeling very playful then, and she preened as she said, "maybe you could put a message in there from me to the Batman. Tell him he's a good kisser."

Vicki bristled noticeably. Did she know? How could she; she didn't seem to be part of Bruce's circle. She knew Bruce with his staunch code of morality wouldn't want to work with a thief. But why bring it up at all if she wasn't trying to taunt Vicki? For one scattered, scared moment, she thought, 'This woman knows; she knows Batman, she knows Batman is Bruce Wayne and she knows my connection to him.' She shook her head. It was impossible. Maybe she was taking a guess, based on the fact that Vicki, against popular opinion, only wrote positive things about the Batman.

"Yeah," she said coldly, "I'm sure he'd appreciate that." Kissed the girls and made them cry, she thought suddenly, and it made her scowl deepen.

Selina read the tone of her voice and tilted her head, delightfully curious now. If she read that right, Vicki didn't just have a thing for Bruce that she wasn't yet over, she had a crush on Batman. Two birds with one stone; how delightful!

"That man is repressed," Selina said simply. "Because the way he laid that kiss on me... So much heat in it, it was like a sauna. I should've blown steam between my lips when I drew back. I've never seen a man so dark and yet so insistent on being a boy scout. But he and I... we have a special relationship."

Vicki was unaware of how tightly she was holding her pencil until it snapped in two in her fist, the top half tumbling to the floor. That's what it takes, she thought bitterly, a woman in a mask. And it hit her like a sucker punch, as profoundly an unexpected: she had dumped him, because it was a lifestyle she didn't want to know about, a part of him that frightened her, that anger, that aggression. So maybe it did take someone else in a mask to be able to deal with it.

"That's... interesting to hear," she managed to answer. "Obviously not... strictly professional. Almost certainly not, as a matter of fact, if he hasn't brought you in yet. Has he granted you some sort of... immunity? Or are you just that good at manipulating him?"

Selina genuinely thought about it, totally unaffected by the word
manipulating". "A little of both," she purred finally. "Honestly, Batman knows I'm not like those freaks in the Narrows right now. As much as I don't want this prompting you to do something stupid because you feel you're now safe from me, I'm not a killer. He knows he holds power over me, and I've been made fully aware that the day I kill is the day he takes me down.

"But..." She smiled. She didn't realize she'd enjoy talking about it so much until she'd gotten started. "He wants me. Wiggle in front of any man enough, he'll suddenly start to see your side of things." She laughed, a dark, growling thing. "I wish I could tell you more, but a girl has to have some secrets."

"Naturally," Vicki replied, biting the inside of her cheek. "Animal attraction, I suppose you could call it," she said, and the tone of her voice was bitter until she realized, with a sparking light in her eyes, how fantastic a line that made: The Cat and the Bat. "This so-called Arkham City, what are your thoughts? Care to share?" Or do you want to sit there, smiling like the proverbial cat who ate the canary and bait me all night? "Let me guess: neutral. Batman's working hard from the inside to bring it down, I've heard; would you ever consider an alliance? Of more than just what you've told me."

Vicki surely must know that Selina couldn't tell her anything true. Not if she expected to get done what needed to be done. Those fools in the Narrows probably got the paper somehow, were no doubt up on the news. If anything, this would be a wonderful opportunity to redirect their attention.

"I won't pretend I'm interested in anything except what's lucrative," she told Vicki plainly. "That's all I can say. For the moment, entirely neutral. But things can change."

"Great," she said, and looked around for her pencil before she remembered that she had murdered it. It was a great soundbite; she'd have to remember it as closely as she possibly could. Because she did NOT want this kitty to come crawling in her window while she was sleeping again. "This is... this is perfect, all of it. I don't expect the Raymond story's gonna cool for a while, and it shouldn't besides, but I wouldn't be surprised if I were you to see headlines about the Catwoman, too!"

Selina rose from her seat. "That's all very flattering," she said coolly, then leaned toward her, claws out. "But remember the important part to all this, Miss Vale. The robbery was mine. So if Raymond wants to grow some balls and come after someone, he can come after me. Understand?"

She turned toward the window then and jumped out without another word on the matter, catching the ledge and moving away before Vicki could follow with her eyes.

Vicki bolted to the window, but she saw nothing but the ever twinkling lights of Gotham at night. Dammit, she thought, though she had no idea what she would have done even if she had seen which way the woman had gone. She triggered her alarm and waited for the police to come, just to validate the story.
