Hell is a world of fire, with pits of flames and endless, suffocating deserts. There are eternal waves of sand and desert, sand dunes, and the deep canyons of exposed bedrock creating interesting rock formations and caves. Anyone unused to the climate would find themselves always parched, squinting against a sun that’s relentless and somehow not illuminating.
There are areas of shade, though, if one take the time to hike to the Iron Mountains, where the Demon Ruler’s castle stands. The castle stands tall, invasive, expansive – and not entirely welcoming. It sits at the top of the Iron Mountains, with craggy expanses of eroding mountainside, the rocks slippery and unpleasant.
There is some water, of course, appearing in pockets of an oasis, but the water is saturated with iron, oxidized, and the water is a rusted red. Very little vegetation grows, especially if you get too close to the fire pits, deep canyons in which fire and lava burst out often, leaving the ground a dark expanse of basalt. There is some vegetation, though, hiding out in the shade – but it’s certainly nothing friendly. There are vines that will trap you if you sneak too close, force you to admit to your failings or your insecurities. And there is, of course, a deadly Dreamshade. One prick of the poisonous thorns would be enough to lead to a slow, agonizing death. So best avoid those.
Demons are not as cruel and evil as would be believed (barring, perhaps, the Demon Queen – whom you might not want to anger) – in reality, demons are something of tricksters who deal in grayer morals rather than outright black & white views of the world. They have their own agenda and have no shame in following that agenda as they see fit. Their culture is seen as free, relentless, and unrepentant. They don’t possess a concept of sin because, for them, that’s simply the way of life and the way of doing things. Mostly, they keep to themselves and behave more with trickery than outright cruelty.
That being said, demons eat human souls, and can smell “death” on someone. Anyone close to dying will smell utterly delicious to a demon, and usually manifests itself in flirtation or sexual attraction.
It’s tradition within demon society to be free with affections, but demons feel emotions deeply and fully, even the good emotions like love and happiness. A demon may gift their chosen one with their eye, possessing half of their magic, never able to be given back again – once it is given, it is the other’s forever. While not a required practice, it’s often used in demon society to demonstrate an eternal bond.
Hell is very much a realm without law and order, although even the chaos seems to be guided and influenced by its Lady Moriarty, Demon Queen of Hell.
