[You've finally recovered from dragons and getting caught up in wind gusts? Wonderful, right on time for Miracle Country to mess around again. These days, when people start noticing shiny, unnatural feathers cropping up here and there, or small orbs of light doing the same, they might find it familiar, at least if they've been around for a while. Surely the residents who have lived through these previous things will be able to let them know what's going on...

Except it's not quite the same thing this time around. While, yes, these items hold memories from others in them, meant to be shared as they were before, it won't show a whole memory as if playing a video or seeing into a dream. No, this time around they're memories of emotions that are being held.

So what does this mean? When near or touching an orb belong to someone else, you will experience the emotion that the person in the memory is feeling. Is it a memory of a tragic event, transferring a feeling of grief, worry, or fear? Is it a memory of being with people you care about, transferring happiness and love? A memory you'd rather forget about, transferring embarrassment and self-doubt? You won't get the play-by-play of the memory when you touch it, but rather experience the emotional state of that memory. Whether you get context for that memory - understanding empathetically why that emotion is being felt and how concretely you get that context - is up to you.

The transferring of emotions can be mild (perhaps more suitable for truly terrible memories that would logically leave people with PTSD or completely emotionally drained), or stronger still (feeling the full extent and power of those emotions), depending on what everyone chooses to do. The transfer can also be more personalized, too. Maybe a memory recalls a day when one was a child, and they were scared of thunder, and so the person receiving it ends up jumping at loud noises and wanting to stay inside for a while. Maybe it's a memory about someone else - maybe Aramis can feel what it's like to love Alice, after being exposed to Porthos's memories of being around her. Or Stiles can feel unbearably proud of Arthur, after holding Merlin's memory of his coronation.

Will you realize that you're missing a memory? No, and it's already forgotten until the orb is returned to you via being felt by another person. Whether you forget the entire memory or just the feelings felt during that moment is up to you.

People will be shedding memories until Tuesday, and could lose memories more than once. Of course, losing them means they'll want to make sure to find them again, so simply ignoring these would probably not work too well. Especially for those who remember losing memories made people fade out once before...]

[Ciel lets out a cry of horror, a low keening sound coming from his throat as the full impact of Sebastian's words hit him. He's gasping, it's hard to breath, and against his will, his eyes slip close to shut out the sight of those malicious and covetous eyes.

Sebastian's just told him that his parents, possibly his whole household, was burned alive while suffering unimaginable agony, and he thinks Ciel's only got one problem?]

You mean, the one where you're still breathing?

The one where you are powerless to do anything to anyone. [The grip on Ciel's jaw hardens.]

Being as weak and defenseless as you are, how could you possibly enact vengeance on your own?

[Ciel's cheeks puff up from the painful grip but he welcomes it, the biting grip distracting him momentarily from the torment of losing his parents. He glares impotently up at Sebastian, the image incongruent to the tears still escaping from the corner of his eye.]

I would find a way, a way to make you burn like you've made them burn.

[If this weren't such a serious situation with so much at stake, if there weren't such an important goal he wanted - no, needed - to accomplish and he could indulge in nostalgia at his leisure, perhaps Sebastian would give in to that fleeting impulse to wipe Ciel's tears away, the way he did once before. This is, after all, in some ways just like back then.]

Easily said. [He leans in so close, to the point where they're almost touching.] Do you mean it?

Yes.

[Convicted. No doubt. Sebastian, of all people, should know more than anyone that once Ciel sets his mind to something, he will not falter, no matter how many bodies he leaves in his wake. The answer is yes and it's whispered vehemently into Sebastian's face.]

[He knows so well. Come on, it's all still in there - all the raw materials. The drive, the spite... How far does he have to go to snap Ciel out of it (it is possible to snap him out of it), what else can he do?]

Then I will ask once last time: what happened to your eye? You don't recall, do you?

I don't know! [He's clearly frustrated now, angry that this creature even thinks to demand something from him when he's done Ciel nothing but harm. His hatred is so sharp, so focused on Sebastian that he doesn't even notice the shadows behind Sebastian going a little brighter. Doesn't notice the small, milky surfaced orb floating jerkily behind Sebastian's shoulder, as if nervous and trying to grab someone's attention.]

Why don't you just tell me what it is you want me to "recall" so you can finally cease this useless blathering!

Oh, you want this conversation over with?

[Very well. No more talking: he opens his mouth wide, displaying all his fangs. So many other uses for his mouth than talking. Rather than leaning even further down, however, Sebastian clamps his other hand roughly over Ciel's eyes. He's been so gentle thus far. Will a physical, painful reminder of what Ciel has forgotten help?

Suddenly, the contract seal in Ciel's eye feels like it's on fire.]

[--But it's a blessedly short-lived pain. Sebastian notices the glowing orb and turns towards it, lifting his hand from Ciel's eyes as he does, instinctively making sure he's between the orb and Ciel. It's no person using magic - he can detect no presence - so there's no worry of someone having walked in on them, but...]

What...?

[Whatever it is, it's too close to Ciel. Sebastian himself? He can handle whatever it does, so after a moment's apprehension he reaches out to capture the thing in his hand.]

[So nice of Sebastian to try and protect Ciel from his own memories, after trying to literally sear them back into him.

The lingering pain is excruciating still, enough for Ciel to temporarily forget about the sight of Sebastian's fangs and focus solely instead on how his eye still feels like it's about to burn its way out of his socket. He'd screamed only once when the contract seal first flared up, his vision whiting out briefly before the spots started to fade to the vision of Sebastian holding a glowing orb.]

[Here, Mr. Demon, try an actual human suit on for size.

The history is nothing Sebastian doesn't already intimately know, but oh the feelings of it all. The devastation at discovering his parents' burning bodies, the humiliation and despair as he's sold, branded and tortured, and treated no better than a beast. A month of this, piled on and compounded until it culminates into the vindictive satisfaction he'd felt at all of the deaths Sebastian caused, mere moments after they'd formed their contract.

And how beautifully efficient Sebastian had killed for him. What driven determination he'd felt.]

[How strange then, that he'd feel a brief flare of disappointment, of intense sadness that these are his memories, that he is not actually a happy child; and that after all of this, after what Sebastian's done, he finally understands that he is truly alone.]

[Thankfully, the feelings are quickly suppressed quickly pass and though he's still shaking from the aftermath of the pain Sebastian inflicted on his eye, he feels much more in control.

Especially over a certain impulsive butler.]

[This human suit is too big and uncomfortable, he doesn't want it.

Feelings, indeed. Not only is the experience completely unexpected, but most of the emotions utterly alien to him. Too intense, too consuming. Ciel is good at suppressing feelings; Sebastian has never had much reason to develop that particular skill (hiding what he feels is a different thing altogether). Long seconds after the orb has faded he remains frozen in place, staring at his hand where the memory was.

He snaps out of it the moment Ciel speaks - obeys the command even before turning to look at him. The shadows immediately retreat, melting back into Sebastian's body - but just carefully enough that Ciel will have a moment to adjust to holding himself upright without being held in place.]

...Young master.

[What a perfect facade you play, Sebastian.

As considerate as withdrawing his shadows at a temperate rate is, Ciel is still unsteady on his feet once they disappear, a pressured pounding starting up in his head that he unflinchingly ignores.]

Am I? [That didn't seem to be the case mere moments ago.]

[He plays it especially well considering that was a lot of heavy emotions for a creature not used to them. He'd protest using the word "shaken", but... perhaps at first he reacted more automatically to the familiarity of Ciel's tone, and only registered the change in his soul several seconds later.

A small, deferential nod. You are.]

And I always your faithful servant. [Always. Including mere seconds ago. A faithful servant only ever acts in his master's best interest. The unsteadiness is noticeable, and even if Sebastian backed off it only means he's no longer so horribly close; he can still reach out his hands, meaning to steady Ciel.]

Here. Please come. [Nevermind that Sebastian still looks a mess of drying blood. Come, let him carry you.]

[Ciel instinctively reacts, his composure slipping as he back slaps Sebastian's hand as far away from him as he possibly can, flattening against the same damn tree and breathing shakily. The contempt for Sebastian is strong in his eyes, the visceral feeling taking him wholly by surprise.]

Don't touch me.

[He's always viewed Sebastian as a tool, as a means to the end in which he triumphs over those who have humiliated him. And perhaps sometimes, late in the night when he's thrashed himself awake from another debilitating nightmare, he's even thought of how monstrous Sebastian's form is, how lethal his fangs and claws are as they rip into flesh and bone alike. He'd taken comfort in that, on having a leash on the apex monster that made other monsters tremble.

He'd even taken comfort in Sebastian's sure and steady presence by his side, and sometimes by his bed, standing sentinel and keeping other monsters at bay.

And now Sebastian's used those fangs and powers against him, not for him. How comical. How repugnant.

No. He doesn't want your filthy hands touching him right now.]

[Sebastian's eyes widen (how this reaction is a surprise to him is anyone's guess), but he obediently withdraws his hands. Stays kneeling on the ground and making no move to come closer.

Ciel knows what he's like. He knows what Sebastian is capable of. What he did just now was basically kid-glove treatment; barely nothing. What's the matter?]

...I apologise. I meant no offense. [Just now? Earlier? So vague.]

[If only they had a Wikipedia article on humans and their silly need for emotions that someone could link to for Sebastian.

Ciel tilts his head back against the tree, cold expression still fixed unerringly on Sebastian's face. His tone when he speaks is detached, impersonal, mostly used in his guise as the Queen's Watchdog.

Or so he thinks.

Instead, it comes out accusatory, angry, a little shaky even.]

Tell me, Sebastian. What would you have done, had I not remembered? Tortured me yourself? Recreated every moment of the agony you felt I deserved? Or would you have thought that too much effort and just ripped my soul out, for your dining pleasure?

[Sebastian's answer doesn't come immediately - or perhaps his answer is the small smile that never leaves his lips as he meets Ciel's gaze. What exactly does that imply?]

I'm sorry to have treated you so roughly. My job is to make sure the young master accomplishes all of his goals, is it not? I simply hoped that with the right kind of reminder... [That's no answer to the question Ciel asked.]

[Sebastian's non-answer is practically a declaration of intent in Ciel's mind. Yes, of course. He should have seen this before. How utterly careless of him. He softly scoffs and smirks at Sebastian, composure regained now...

...as long as Sebastian doesn't try touching him again.]

Your methods leave something to be desired. I suppose we'll never know now how effective they could have been. [And with that, he's done talking about his part in this with Sebastian. He pushes away from the tree, now that his legs are steady.]

The sphere. It gave me my memories back. Were you affected by it?

[Of course he wouldn't have. Throwing away all his hard work on that soul for a bland-tasting, quick fill? Terminating the contract without his contractor breaching it first? There would be nothing aesthetic about that.]

The young master certainly harbours many emotions. [So, yes. Are they going back now? He rises from his kneeling position in one fluid motion but makes no attempt at coming closer or at touching Ciel again - he's learned to hold off when Ciel gets like this.]

[And he hoped you enjoyed every second of it.]

The quirks of being a human, Sebastian. I'm sure it's all very inconvenient to you. But it's what we do with those emotions that...well. I'm sure you've witnessed enough during your time as a demon. Otherwise, how would you get your pride and your greed to prey on?

[Yes, they're going back now. He's just not sure how they're going to accomplish this without Sebastian carrying him the great distance he just ran them through. Or maybe it isn't too far and he's just thinking it is, from the dread he felt while being kidnapped.]

[Looking back he'll likely think of it as a learning experience, at least to a degree. Understanding the way humans work... it's "more convenient" in the end, after all.]

Quite, young master. Desperation, as well. [Humans do so many foolish things out of desperation, too. So many desperate moments among those memories.]

[They're not as deep in as Ciel probably thinks. Deep enough not to run much risk of meeting anyone but still not at the very heart of the forest. Even Sebastian can't go there and not pay the monsters his full attention. Perhaps noticing something in Ciel's posture, or simply assuming they're heading back, Sebastian cants hid head vaguely to indicate their surroundings.]

The creatures here don't learn. [No matter how often he goes in here, no matter how many monsters he kills, they never learn to stay clear of him.] They will not stay away for long.

[Sure Sebastian can just slay them as they head back, but it will take time and... it might not be that fun to watch for Ciel. Carrying will be easier?]
