Fic: "Brittle", FFVII (Sephiroth/Cloud)
Title: Brittle
Author/Artist: bofoddity
Rating: Worksafe
Warnings: Unusual Cloud?
Word count: 351
Summary: Trust is a delicate thing.
Prompt: 5. Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth/Cloud: trust games - so easily broken.
A/N: Sadly, this turned out to be a gen fic posing as slash (although the undertones are there). Also, since I dislike existing fanon, it doesn't exist in this story. Sorry!
"Trust me," he's told, in many voices.
Cloud doesn't, and eventually people stop reaching out to him. And that's exactly how he prefers it; if there's anything in the world one shouldn't rely on, it's trust itself. There's no faster way to bare oneself to betrayal than to count on somebody, no faster way to get betrayed. And there's no surer way to make somebody vulnerable than to earn their trust.
He has had enough people playing with his mind to know all of this, and so he never lets his guard down. Cloud doesn't think much of people who do. And he admires those who have learned the lesson as well as he has.
It's the reason why his respect for great Sephiroth has remained boundless, even if beliefs crack in Midgar just as quick as they do elsewhere.
But since Cloud has learned so well, he also knows better than to expect anything to last forever.
Cloud often wonders how it would feel like to have his idol’s trust, to have somebody who’s so careful about everything and everyone to open up to him, and to him only. Would he be awed? Honored? He's sure that many would gasp at him for even thinking that other options exist. Would Sephiroth hate himself for that trust, for such obvious weakness? Or would he see an opportunity, discover that maybe having such a flaw isn’t so bad after all?
Of all his ponderings, the last one is the most unlikely; he’s smart enough to understand what’s possible and what isn’t. And the chance of great Sephiroth ever learning that Cloud even exists is one of the latter things, and even otherwise his possibilities would be slight. Sephiroth just isn’t friendly with anybody. Even Zack, the soldier who still knocks on Cloud’s shell with hope, keeps his distance to Sephiroth, if he has even approached the other man in the first place. All chances Cloud has are what ifs, dreams.
But he keeps thinking about it, how it would feel to have trust that fragile, and perhaps most of all, how it would feel like to break it.
