Notes: I'm so sorry this is so late. The series finale killed me with awesome.
“Zuko, what are you doing?!” Aang yelled, ducking behind a high-jutting rock as the heat of the fire rolled over him, the flames frighteningly close. He lunged up when the fire cleared out and shot out a blast of air at Zuko, knocking him backwards. “Whatever it is, we can talk about it!”
Shaking his head, Zuko turned. “I told you to go away, Aang,” he said. “I don’t want to talk right now.”
Aang shook his head, than spoke up when he realized that Zuko wouldn’t see the gesture. “No. You have to talk about whatever it is. It’s not healthy to bottle things up, you know that.”
“Go. Away.” Zuko said. “Before I really hurt you.”
“I don’t think you will,” Aang said, back straightening, a frown on his face.
Zuko growled and turned around sharply, sending a powerful surge of fire towards Aang, who flinched but stood his ground. The fire barely singed as it passed him by; the flames licked at his clothing and turned his skin a bright pink color but didn’t burn.
Taking a deep breath, Aang smiled and stepped towards Zuko. “See? I knew you wouldn’t,” he said. “Now tell me what’s wrong. Maybe I can help!”
Zuko laughed and Aang cringed at how brittle it sounded. “You can’t,” he said, shaking his head. “You really can’t. I did something…” he paused for a moment. “Mai’s probably going to leave me,” he said, finished a different sentence than the one he started.
“What?!” Aang took hold of Zuko’s shoulder and turned him to face him. “What happened?” he asked. “Maybe I can talk to her, change her mind, you know?”
“No! Stay away from Mai,” Zuko said urgently. “She’s really angry and you…you shouldn’t be around her right now. I don’t know what she’ll do.”
Aang blinked, cocking his head. “What are you talking about? Why would she be mad at me?” he asked. “Did…did I do something? Because I can go apologize for whatever it is, I can try and—”
“You didn’t do anything,” Zuko said, running one hand through his hair and jerking the topknot out roughly. “I did. I did something so stupid.…” he trailed off again and Aang smiled, putting both hands on his shoulders and shaking him gently.
“Don’t be like that,” he said. “C’mon, it can’t be that bad. Just go back and talk to her and apologize and everything will be fine. Really! Mai’s not the kind of lady to act rash so she’ll probably listen.” Aang paused. “What…did you do, anyway?”
Zuko bowed his head for a moment, hair covering his eyes but before Aang could ask him again, he looked up, a determined expression on his face. Leaning forward and catching Aang as he leaned back, Zuko pressed their lips together softly, eyes closing briefly before opening and staring into wide gray ones as he leaned back.
Blushing, Aang managed to say, “I guess it had something to do with that, huh?”
Zuko frowned in confusion. “You’re…you’re not mad?” he asked, the ramifications of what he’s just done dawning on him as a violent flush rose on his cheeks.
Aang shrugged. “No. Just…surprised,” he said before grinning. “Now, c’mon. We have to go stop Mai from leaving. Or, you know, deciding to hunt us down.”
“But…” Zuko shook his head. “But what are you going to say?!”
“I dunno. But even if she does leave, you can’t let her leave angry. It’s not right!”
Zuko nodded. “And…after?” he asked.
“I have no idea,” Aang said. “I guess we’ll just have to see, huh?”
Zuko huffed. “I don’t understand how you can be so cavalier about everything!” he said and Aang laughed, taking him by the elbow gently.
“It’s a gift. Now let’s go talk to Mai.”
