Title: Behind the Walls
Author: lady_ganesh
Rating: PG-13
Notes: Earl/Tsuzuki, Hisoka/Tsuzuki, "Who knows you better than I?"
The prince was held in a castle where time stood still, in a labyrinth of roses and thorns. It was difficult to find, and most people weren't mad enough to look.
Contenders still came. There had been many in the past, and would no doubt come in the future. Helen of Troy's face may indeed have launched a thousand ships, but this prince's would have sent ten thousand to their doom.
But for now, the prince slept his enchanted sleep, trapped behind a wall of pain and regret, and the Earl watched over him, wondering if he would ever wake.
Kurosaki Hisoka knew how to use a sword; something that hadn't been seen in decades. Perhaps, the Earl considered, he finally had a worthy opponent.
He could challenge the boy to a duel; the drama would suit Tsuzuki's beauty. But Tsuzuki would not want to be dueled over; it would wound him deeply.
Tsuzuki could not, would not, be hurt. The Earl would see to that.
Tsuzuki still came to him, to beg, to weep, to negotiate the debt that continued to grow and could never be paid.
But more often, the Earl wondered when he would wake.
"Why are you doing this?" Kurosaki demanded, his chin held stubbornly up, his eyes flashing in the dark of the library.
"I have watched Tsuzuki for years," the Earl said, keeping his tone even in contrast with Kurosaki's passion. "There are things you should know."
Kurosaki turned his face back to the records. "There are things you should know, too," he noted, his anger bottled down tightly again. "Do you think you're the only person around her who pays attention?"
For the first time in centuries, the Earl was taken aback.
Kurosaki turned another page. "I've been here for years," he continued. "I know when Tsuzuki comes to you, and the way he acts when he returns. Sometimes I've seen the bruises."
The Earl put his face to his mask and let Kurosaki continue.
"You think you know more about Tsuzuki than anyone here," Kurosaki said, his eyes meeting the Earl's. "But who knows you?"
For an uncomfortable moment, the Earl considered calling Wadson. But what would he say? What good would throwing the boy out of the mansion do now?
Kurosaki smirked.
When Tsuzuki finally woke, it would not be the Earl's mask he saw, after all.
