He winds the long ribbons around her wrists, and his fingers shake against her skin. She thinks it makes him beautiful; the fear and reverence at once shining in his eyes, the sharp animal scent of attraction and apprehension at once.
Eliade no longer entirely believes in herself. An Akuma is a monster, and if she clings unnoticed long enough to this affection—this attachment—it will, she begins to believe, grant her a measure of fulfillment instead of a wordless aching loss centered below her breastbone.
The Earl and the exorcists and the village people are shadows she banishes in the face of his sigh, the way he curls against her, the way sometimes in sex his teeth scrape her neck and harshness drifts over him, through their interlocked bodies like a summer haze of heat.
She’ll keep him with her, she swears without sound or breath, trembling on the sad exhale. His eyes shine in the dark, and she wonders if he is crying. If so, from his expression, it is with wonder.
“Tighter,” she whispered, and he pulls the ribbons until human sensation dances down her wrists, prickles her nerves with the echo. Did she feel this when human? Did the body she wears like a set of fine clothes? It doesn’t matter, she’s feeling it now.
“As you wish.” He says softly, and strokes her cheek. He’s barely more than a child; an impressionable, dark eyed boy with a fine boned solemnity when calmed from hysteria. He should smile more. No one else should matter.
She draws him down to her and swears, still silently, that this will last.
