Tuesday
Who: Gwen, Nate and OTA
When: A while after the meeting, evening to dusk.
Where: Small tiki restaurant and shop.
Why: First meeting/recruitment.

Gwen had a long day already. Most of the kids in her class today didn't want to dance anymore, or were getting rather sloppy. But they still hadn't mastered the leap. She sighed, biting her lip and thinking of how to revise her teacher's schedule to keep them interested.

She was at home now, having walked from the school there. She had changed out of her pants and t-shirt, taken a shower and put herself into her uniform for work. It was the typical scandalous tiki uniform that everyone wore, bikini top, grass skirt and boy shorts underneath it. Slipping on her sandals at the door she pulled her brown hair up and started into work. She didn't have to walk very far at all. Plus she liked walking, it kept her in better shape than just the normal work outs she did with the kids everyday.

Humming to herself she stepped in under the grass huts, clocked in, and started taking drink orders from the early birds before going back to see if they needed anything to eat. She usually got big tips, being nice and having a genuine smile, unless they wanted to touch her. Then she just couldn't have that, luckily she didn't get that...too much.

After a few hours she paused to eat something. Picking at her food she swallowed a few advil to try to hold her headache at bay. Gwen wondered if she was getting sick then she heard the first few tell-tale voices. The woman in the corner was angry at her lawyer back home, screwing her over and she had a few choice words. The man at the bar was looking at her co-worker Cheri and those were some moves for a porn video.

Gwen closed her eyes, leaning over her plate and the table a little. The palms of her hands pressed against her ears. "Don't do it." She whispered, "I don't want to hear." She tried willing everything away. Her boss thought that she was falling asleep over her food. Large eyes blinked, she took a mouthful, and tried to get it down. Finishing as much as she could she snuck off to take her meds early. Hoping and praying that it would hold off. Coming back out she gave a few new customers a smile, took their order, and made her way over to a table with a male. Giving him a smile, she bit back the sudden pain that felt like her skull was breaking open. For now, it was just those in the bar, "May...may...I serve you a...drink, sir?"

Nate was glad to have his quick little meeting over and be back in his quarters with Pavla. He had invited the quirky little Romanian out for a day in the Hawaiian sun with him, but understood when he was turned down because, “Dahlink, ohl zat zun vil make you look like burnt leather one day. Yool zee! I’ll be like pooorzeelin und you vil be leather!”. How could he argue with that? Especially when Pavla looked so cute saying it?! He hurriedly set scented candles all around his luxurious bath, turned on the Jacuzzi and, just before he left, gave Pavla a kiss, promising, “Tonight, I will show you how glad I am that you stayed with me”.

Hurrying from the ship, Nate looked behind him to make sure that no one had followed him. He had made an appoint that he didn’t want anyone to know about; he made similar appointments in many of the cities they made port in and he hadn’t been caught yet. He reached into the small beach duffle he carried and felt around…the package was there and he could relax. Walking a few streets away, he caught a city bus and took it to the other side of town and then got off…from there, he walked over a street and caught a cab and took it the rest of the way to his destination. Stopping before he walked to the door, he looked up one street and down the other until he was satisfied that he had not been followed. Stepping up to the massive door he took hold of the great iron knocker and banged. When the door opened a stout nun of Hawaiian ancestry and a kindly countenance stood there, “Do I have the honor of addressing Mr. Sterling?”, She greeted.

“Please, Sister, call me ‘Nate’”, he replied with a smile.

“Welcome to Saint Jude Thaddeus, Nate. My name is Sister Catherine. Please come in”. He towered over her at 6’3”, but somehow she seemed to hold her own as he passed. She ushered him to what looked like a cross between a European medieval library and a Hawaiian hotel lobby…it worked. A younger nun, who kept her eyes averted from Nate, brought them a tray of lemonade and cookies.

“Sister, I can’t stay long…”, he began.

She smiled and patted his hand, “What brought you to us my child? You said on the phone that you had a sizeable contribution. This is most kind, of course. The children are always in need…”.

Nate reached into his bag and withdrew a package of bills. It was a stack of American $1000.00 bills. There were a hundred of them in the bundle. These were all good, Nate made sure of that…he never donated bad or traceable money. He placed the stack of bills on the table in front of the Sister. “Sister Catherine, there is $100,000.00 there. It’s for the physically and mentally handicapped children of St. Jude Thaddeus. I want no recognition, please. I wish to be an anonymous donator”.

The Sister’s hands shook as the touched the money and she looked at him and a worried expression crossed her face; she began to speak…

“My family is filthy rich, Sister Catherine. I think it only fair that we should give some of it back”, he quickly saved her from having to ask him something he might not want to answer…and his statement wasn’t a lie…his family was filthy rich.

Having made his donation, Nate felt great…he felt purged…he was hungry too and he wanted a drink!! He headed into town and quickly into a little grass hut type restaurant. He didn’t have to wait long when his waitress appeared, adorable girl in a grass skirt…but something was wrong…her brow scrunched and her speech halting…Nate jumped up and took her by the elbows, “Here, sweetheart, sit down for a minute…you’re not feeling so well, are you?”, he soothed.

Gwen wasn't sure how she had made if from one table to the other really. She swallowed, then blinked as the guy seemed to be right on top of her. He was pretty, and he thought her adorable? Wasn't that for puppies?

He was touching her, she wanted to draw back. "I...I'm fine." Not. She really wouldn't mind sitting down. Nope, not at all. Her stomach lurched as she moved into the chair and she bit back the urge to get back up and run to the restroom. "Thanks." She looked up at him and tried for another smile. "I...get headaches."

That was lame. She felt like she was having a very blunt axe slamming into the middle of her head, now it was stuck, wedged there in her brain. Whoever was wielding it wanted it to push down further. There was a soft roar of voices, things she didn't want to know tangling with the pain. The meds weren't working again, not that she figured they would. She had hoped though.

"Um...do you want a drink? I'll just be a few minutes...here. It'll be on the house because of me...sitting here." Another weak, tremulous smile before her fingers fluttered over her forehead. She had to keep control, she had to stay focused on her job. The thoughts of others would go away, they would have to, she would die if they didn't.

Her eyes focused on his hands, he was rather clean, she was thankful for that at least. She picked up something about a ship in her focusing and closed her eyes. Taking a few breaths she willed the pain away, to no avail. Maybe the clean pretty guy right there on top of her, breathing on her, would chop her head off. Or give her some incurable disease that let her live only a few more days. Riiiiight, chopping, yes, that would work. Lob her head right off her shoulders.

Looking around the little restaurant/lounge, Nate made sure that no one was paying too much attention to himself and the waitress; putting his rather large hand to her forehead so that his thumb and fingertips were touching her temples, he willed his palm and the insides of his fingers to ice up.

“Close your eyes and relax, Luv, no job is worth this much pain. I have a very good doctor on my ship. Perhaps he can help you, eh? How long have you had these headaches?”.

Nate hated to see anyone in pain, especially a woman…it made him think back to the times his mother suffered hardships because of his loser of a father and the parents that disowned her. He rubbed her hand with his other, non-iced hand, “Don’t be afraid”, he soothed, “I’m a mutant, but I’m one of the good guys, I promise”, he gave her a reassuring smile and a friendly wink.

I wish there were some way I could get her to trust me, Nate worried, as he massaged the pretty girl's temples with his iced fingrtips, I'm sure that Doc Jordan could help her somehow, but for all she knows I'm a serial killer. "Look, Miss, My name is Nathaniel Sterling. I'm the Captain of a ship called The KIng's Ransom and we're docked here in Oahu for a few days. Our ship's doctor is one of the best. I understand you not wanting to go off to a strange place with a strange man, but what if I could call him and get him to bring his bag here and look at you? Would you see him?"

Nate's eyes scanned the lounge, giving everyone that 'backoff' look. This girl was in pain and if anyone gave her any shit, he would make sure they were very sorry they opened their mouth. Standing up, he yelled over to one of the bartenders, "Bring the lady a cold ginger ale, will ya, mate?". He looked at her white knuckles and the lines around her eyes, So sad in one so young

Gwen was ready to lean into the hand on her forehead, then it turned cold. It was too hot for his hand to be that cold. It felt good. It was still too hot though. She whimpered, reaching up to touch his wrist and finding it warm, normal. Now that was odd. She bit her bottom lip and willed herself to pull away, but she couldn't, it just felt too good.

"No, he can't. I've been...to them." She grimaced and kept her eyes closed. She knew that doctor now, just this man thinking of him. He would just be like any of the other doctors she had went to, they would say that she was going mental. In this man's thoughts there was something else though, the doctor might actually could help because he would understand, because...he was odd like her?

She opened her eyes at the kind man, catching the wink and smile. Him with the ice hands touching her pounding head, and having far too many thoughts. "I...know. I'm hearing your words before you...say them. That's why I'm hurting so bad." She grimaced again, pressing her head into his hand. When her eyes closed this time tears slipped out of the corners. She swiped them away quickly, hoping that he wouldn't see.

Thankfully her episodes didn't last long, and she was already telling a slight difference to the better. "So...you're a ship of mutants? Do you not want to go back home? Don't they?" Gwen looked back up at him slowly. She then jumped a little as he yelled for her to be served, "No...I'm ok...please tell them I'm ok, I need the job." Her voice hiccuped and she sighed as that caused a searing pain to break through her head. She closed her eyes, willed herself to just...shut down.

Slowly, she could hear less and less of the other patrons and workers. She wasn't going to get a good tip from the table of hers farthest away, table 10. That was ok though, they never gave good tips. Licking her lips she wrapped her fingers around Nathaniel's wrist, "You can let go now, it's letting up. Thank you." Gwen was still confused about one thing though, "How did you know I was a mutant?" She thought that she kept her powers well hidden, how had a ship full of mutants, obviously welcoming more, find her?

Nate was becoming more and more concerned for this young woman…she was in such terrible pain. He was glad that, apparently, his icy hand was giving her some small measure of relief.

When one of the young bartenders came over and brought the requested ginger ale, Nate stuffed a $50.00 dollar bill in his shirt pocket, “Thanks, mate, you’re the best. Could you let the boss know that this young lady is taking a sick day?”, he stuffed another $50.00 in the young man’s pocket, “Good man!”.

“You’re reading my mind? That’s what’s giving you the headaches? God bless you, you poor thing! You’re a mutant too!”, This changed everything. Nate’s mind raced in a thousand directions. He held her gently and finger combed her hair away from her face. “Are you being assaulted by the thoughts of all of these people, baby?”, asked with concern. “We not only have an incredible doctor, but we have a few telepaths and one or two telekinetics onboard who can help you train your mind and strengthen it”. He knelt down and held her face in his large hands, wiping away her tears with his thumbs … “I don’t expect you to just take my word. Read my mind. See if what I’m telling you isn’t the truth”.

“Yes, Yes, we are a ship full of mutants!”, he exclaimed, happily, as he knelt looking up into her face, his dark brown eyes contrasting sharply with his sandy blond hair, “…and we don’t worry about going home because The King’s Ransom IS our home! We are a family and we don’t ever have to worry about being different. No looking over your shoulder afraid that someone will catch you doing something they don’t consider normal. We take care of each other”.

He took her hands in his own and held them, smiling at her as he stood. “You ask how I knew you were a mutant? I didn’t. I only saw a young woman in pain. My sympathies aren’t only for my own kind, my dear. Bigotry is hateful to me. My mother wasn’t a mutant and I loved her fiercely. My father, however was a mutant and he was pretty much a loser. I…”, he stopped and smiled at himself, “I’m giving a speech to a poor young woman who is suffering from a headache already”, he held out his hand to her, “May I escort you to our ship, Miss…did I get your name?”.

When Reggie came over with her drink and got tipped well, she could see the indecision fall from his mind. If this guy was going to tip him that well then whatever he gave Gwen would be triple that. She groaned and eyed the ginger ale. Whatever made the customer happy went. Even if that included going with them somewhere and being cut up into little pieces and shoved in the ocean for the whales and dolphins and crabs.

Her thoughts stopped as Nate turned his attention back to her. He didn't look like he had a knife on him, but he did run a ship. Ships had cannons and stuff that was deadly. She nodded at his questions. "Usually close by minds is all I get." She frowned, "Can they make it go away? I want it to go away."

This man was so lively, so passionate. She couldn't help but believe him even if he had no other motives that she could read on his mind. He was telling the truth, she didn't have to use her powers to tell that. Still, she was paranoid by fault and careful by nature. "Is there a type of police on board, in case...in case something does happen?" She wanted safety, she needed it. She could already tell that the ship was quite clean, that was a plus.

Closing her eyes she sighed and tried to get the pain to go away, she willed it away. She still had a throbbing all over, but it was slowly letting up. The voices or thoughts in her head were lessening greatly, now it was just Nate's because he was so close. She only hoped that no one else would get close for a while until it went away fully.

Her green eyes opened, looking Nate's face over expectantly. She smiled a little, "Sometimes, one voice makes it easier to focus on just one thing until the rest fades away." Again she had to wonder if the ship was safe. She took his hand and stood slowly, "I'm Gwen Gregory. My friend gave me the name Lady Hawk when she learned that I could see just about everything." Did her want to be accepted and the need to get better outweigh her paranoia? Yes. Did that want outweigh her need for her father and friend? Yes, because sooner or later Kari would leave her like her father did. "Can...I just tell them that I won't be back?"

Before he could answer she pulled away, moving over to her boss who was standing there at the bar, pretending to not watch her. She moved slowly, haltingly, afraid that jarring her head would make it split again. She moved over to him, staying an arm's length away, told him that she quit because she was moving away. Her boss took one look at the guy she had been talking to, grinned, gave her a sweaty bear hug and smack on the back. Gwen felt nasty and humiliated by the time she made it back to Nate, even though it had been just a few moments. "He thinks I'm being your whore." She snorted and held her head, "He's disgusting. Please tell me there are showers..."

Nate could tell the girl was uncomfortable and a bit worried too. That was okay, he was used to this…he’d done this many, many times before. He smiled widely and took her hand, “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Gwen Gregory. I’m Nathaniel Sterling, but you can call me Nate. Everyone else does, except my mum when I get the chance to see her. It’s still Nathaniel to her”. He looked at her pretty green eyes and tilted his head a bit, “Yeah, Lady Hawk, I like that. It’s pretty and it suites you. My mutant code name is Glacier…”, he held his hand up, “…guess it’s no secret why, eh?”.

Taking Gwen by the shoulders, Nate looked into her eyes and took a very serious tone, “I want you to shut everyone out now, Luv, okay? Concentrate only on me. Can you do that?”. He towered above her, at 6’3”, so he tried not to seem too foreboding…he kept a pleasant enough look on his face as he continued, “We have no policemen onboard our ship. Only mutants. I want you to read my mind. I’m giving you full permission, Gwen, okay? I’m going to concentrate on the ship and what we do and even some of the people for you…so just relax and see what you can see, sweetie”. Nate relaxed and left his mind completely vulnerable to the telepath. He had absolutely nothing to hide. He was ashamed of nothing he had done or nothing in his past. He had telepaths on his ship and was perfectly comfortable around them. Many others were not.

When Gwen asked if she could tell her boss that she wouldn’t be back, Nate was surprised and pleasantly so…he was hoping that meant that she might consider staying with them. He loved welcoming new mutants to his family. “Please do tell them that you won’t be back, Luv. I think this place is not so good for your health…annnd, maybe I can talk you into staying with us for awhile, eh?”, he encouraged with a wink…after she was out of ear range. He would repeat the offer when she could hear it and answer him.

Nate watched as Gwen’s sweaty boss hugged her and gave her a pat on the back with his meaty, greasy paw. “What a slimeball”, he mumbled to himself, feeling sorry for the poor girl. “He thinks what?!”, Nate asked, outraged. He was going to go over and beat the pig senseless, but reconsidered…that would get the authorities involved and that would be bad for the girl and for the heist tomorrow. With a sinister grin, Nate chuckled, “Take my hand Gwen. We’re getting out of here…but first I want to show you a technique I’ve been working on with my powers. It’s not very easy and it takes a bit of concentration. A guy with Icy powers like mine can of course freeze liquids of all kinds and sweat is a liquid. Now it’s easy to freeze something when I’m touching it, but tougher to freeze something from across the room”, He looked down into Gwen’s pretty green eyes, just as the swinish
Boss let a horrible grunting scream, “Just imagine how much sweat collects in the crotch area of a nasty sweaty man like your boss…prolly hurt terrible if that froze up solid, eh?!”.

Holding Gwen’s hand, he walked out into the beautiful Hawaiian sun with a big white smile on his face, “Ahhhhhh, that felt good!”.

"Ok. Nice to meet you." I think. She added silently to herself as she bit her bottom lip. Listening to him yet again she smiled softly and nodded. "It's better than Ice Man or something non-original like that." She smiled again and lifted a shoulder slowly.

Gwen closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Many times she had tried to focus on one person, but it had been Kari, not a stranger. Kari was quite easy to read even without being a telepath. This guy she had no clue about. Gritting her teeth she tried to focus slowly on him, one by one everything else disappeared. She was standing in a void of nothingness in her mind. Nate kept talking, she focused on him and him alone. The pain centered just behind her eyes, shooting pain to the back of her head in time with her heartbeat.

She could see the ship, feel it, smell it. There were a few people that flashed before her mind's eye, names scattered, the their profiles floated at her fingertips ready for her to study. Grimacing as the pain nearly double she opened her eyes, breaking it. "I...appreciate that." Gwen nearly whimpered and rubbed her eyes with thumb and forefinger. She felt like she had just read thousands of pages in a text book. "I...am very untrained. But I saw the ship, and...Vivvy? Serena...there was a person who...could have been either a female or male?" She looked confused and shook her head.

As she watched him, she took his hand as he asked. Gwen made a face and covered her ears, tugging her hand free of Nate's. She could hear her boss's thoughts and they were far from pretty and painless. Closing her eyes she did her best to silence his thoughts, wanting to run out of the place. She didn't know whether to be thankful or to ask Nate to no longer hurt him. Her boss had always treated her...alright, paid her well even though she wasn't too nice to him.

"I don't think I really want to imagine that." Gwen slid one hand from her ear to her mouth and tried to think of pretty flowers, swimming in the ocean, anything but something gross like that. Her stomach lurched as her mind came up with a picture anyway. "Oh no." She shook her head and gave a nervous, small laugh. Gwen's hand went to Nate's as they walked again. She wasn't sure how but it was there. She wasn't even sure if she had even taken her hand away from his.

Looking around she shielded her eyes from the bright sunlight. Her headache throbbing a little with it. She ducked her head down. "How...how long is the ship going to be docked?" She would need time. Time to pack, write notes, try to get Kari to understand. Try to get a replacement for her kids at the school. They wouldn't miss her much, most of them hated dancing. "How will I be able to pay my way? I can't do much but...teach dancing, waitress and clean." She glanced up at him, worried that the price of getting on the ship or staying on the ship would be more than she could bear. Of course in reading his mind there had been no mention of payment, just sort of one pulling one's weight. There had been something about a heist too, and harvesting...electricity? Gwen would really have to ask a lot of questions to clear up her confusion.

This girl was a nervous little bird for sure, Nat worried as he rubbed her shoulders and tried to soothe her. "Yes, Vivvy, Serena...", he chuckled, "that's Pavla you see... he's a boy that enjoys wearing girl's clothing sometimes. Looks smashing too!". When she rubbed at her eyes and covered her ears, Nate felt so bad for her, "Don't you worry, Luv, we will get you some help. Those headaches will soon be a thing of the past. I promise".

As they left the Restaurant, Nate was in a wonderful mood, but it didn't seem to be shared by Gwen, 'Wait a minute? Could she possibly be feeling bad for that pig of a boss?!, he wondered, 'This girl is too sweet for her own good, bless her heart'.

As they walked, he tried to send soothing thoughts as he answered her questions. "Well, we will be leaving sometime tomorrow and you don't have to pay your way, Gwen. Each of us has a place on the ship. Maybe you could teach dance classes...I like that idea and I think alot of the crew would too! I can see inflight classes on the top deck!", he gently patted her on the back, "I may sign on myself!"

It wasn't long until they reached the ship. Nate stopped to give Gwen time to take it all in...he was so proud of his ship and never got tired of showing it off...The King's Ransom was not only a massive ship it was extremely ornate...truely a work of art. As the young woman looked up at the wonderous craft, Nate bent down to her ear and whispered, "One mutant woman created this wonder, Gwen...one mutant woman. See what our people can do when left to their own devices?".

Putting one foot onto the gangplank, Nate offered Gwen his hand, "Come on, Lady Hawk, let's go see your new home, shall we?". Each time he showed the ship to someone new, it was like seeing it for the first time himself.

She could only hope that what he promised was the truth. No more having to look over her shoulder to make sure no one was watching. Days upon hopefully months were she would only have allergy headaches or something simple as that. Training to be...herself and not normal. Just the ability to be up in the sky with the birds, possibly able to reach out and touch them, instead of staying on the ground, staring and wishing she had a life full of simple pleasures.

Gwen nodded and Nate talked of her teaching classes. "I enjoy teaching dance, but I'm a rather hard instructor." She bit her bottom lip, "That's at least what my students say. But they aren't...weren't adults." He kept touching her. She had to keep reminding herself that he was clean, very clean, for a male. At least she hoped, she hadn't had real time to study every crevice of his hands.

The ship was gorgeous, large, and made her think of romance books where ladies were stolen by pirates. This ship though was more like an....alien pirate ship? It didn't have the same dirty 'walk the plank if you dare touch it with a cleaning rag' feel. She took a deep breath, eyes roaming from one end of the ship to the other, her eyes focusing on things every now and then. The joints of the ship, where planks met planks, where the decorative aspects met the working bulk of the ship. She smiled, "She has good taste and doesn't miss a detail. Serena made it right?"

The pain had nearly been forgotten with the thought of exploring a ship. She took his hand and stepped up with him on the gangplank. "There are not as many people as I thought on board, out exploring aren't they?" She just hoped that they would accept her as freely as this man had. A lot of people were afraid of telepaths. They needn't worry about her, she didn't want to be a telepath. She just wanted to see.

When they stepped up on the actual ship, Gwen reached out and ran her hand along the edge. It was so smooth. Taking her hand away she looked at her digits, and then looked away. Being out in the elements made a lot of things grow upon surfaces. She would have to watch herself, before she cloroxed the whole ship. "I think I might take to cleaning. Not that whoever already does doesn't do a good job...just not good enough for me. I won't get in anyone's way or move things to where they cannot find them. I will put everything back as is." She reached under the grass tendrils and wiped her hand off on her shorts.

She took his hand and they proceeded up the gangplank and onto the ship; Gwen seemed to take close notice of each detail. “Serena created the ship”, he answered her, “…very good. You read my thoughts and hopefully didn’t get any residual aches or pains. Serena’s code name is Grease Monkey”, he grinned, “I came up with that one and she still loves me. Serena and I were the first two to crew the King’s Ransom. It was not so massive and grand as it is now of course”, he smiled nostalgically, “It began as somewhat of a yacht…was still that way when we picked up Vivvy…then we expanded, bit by bit by bit”, he cocked an eyebrow and threw his hands wide, “Who can say when Serena will ever be finished expanding her pride and joy, eh?”.

He noticed Gwen run her fingers along the edge of the ship and then look at them. “Cleaning? You’d like to clean?!”, he asked, half amused and half disturbed, “Well, Gwen, I’m sure we can accommodate you there…if you are sure that’s what you want to do”. He smiled at her and made a mental note to himself to have their finest telepath onboard, Rosemary, work with the girl. Poor thing not only has blinding headaches, but a terrible case of OCD, he worried.

After a brief walk on the top deck he led her to one of the doorway down to the lower decks. “Here we go…After you, my dear. Watch your step”. When they had gone down one flight of stairs, he stopped her. This is the deck the doctor is on, Luv, Level 02. Most living quarters are on Level 02, including my own”, he furrowed his brow, “There are a small number of quarters on Level 03…that’s one deck below. We have six decks on this ship, including the top deck…”, he grinned and winked, “…don’t worry…no quiz!”.

Continuing along, Nate pointed out, as they passed, “The galley is here, run impeccably, by Magdeline, or Boomer if you wish…but, word to the wise”, his tone was serious and not joking, “I wouldn’t let her catch you doing the ‘white glove test’ in her galley, Luv. She takes great pride in her food, her cooking and her galley. That is her uncontested territory…no need to ‘rock the boat’, eh?”, he gave her a reassuring pat on the back, “Not to worry though. Boomer is a real sweetheart”.

Stopping before a set of double doors, Nate started to push them open and then hesitated. Looking down at her he smiled and whispered, “Best knock, eh? Don’t want to catch the ol doctor in his skivvies!”. Catching the doctor in his underwear was the least of the captain’s worries, he didn’t want to walk in with this girl and catch the doctor in the middle of some wild sexcapade…oh yes, Nate wasn’t blind to who he had on his ship. He gave the door three loud knocks and called, “Hello, doctor? It’s Nate and a new crewmember”.

Giggling shortly at his explanation of who gave Serena her code name, Gwen looked up at Nate. "If you keep getting people to come on board, she might have to build something as big as..." She shook her head, "Maybe the Great Pyramids or something bigger." She couldn't really think of anything big that would still be able to fly.

She nodded, "Yes, with my sight I can see...fungus, some bacteria, algae, mold. I just got to where I didn't like seeing them and the best way to do that is to clean to where I can't see them." She lifted a shoulder and smiled a little. "My Dad became obsessive after I got sick as a child, he didn't want to lose me." She looked away, rubbing her temples with her fingers.

Gwen entered the lower deck carefully, glancing around she smiled. "So I won't have far to move my things, if I'm welcomed here. Are you sure they won't mind?" She glanced up worriedly at Nate. Listening to him about Boomer or Magdeline she nodded. She had heard stories from other waitresses at better restaurants. If you dared touch anything without permission in the kitchens then you prepare to be stabbed or tongue lashed until tears. Gwen would keep a berth around the galley, until she got hungry. She just hoped that Magdeline was far cleaner than most cooks she had worked with. "I won't touch there, or in private rooms, I promise."

Eyes widening a little as they reached the doctor's quarters, Gwen folded her hands together and looked down at the floor. She bit back on her nerves and nodded. Images of Doc flitted through her mind from Nate's and she made a face as he pictured him in skivvies and a sexcapade. Was she sure she wanted to stay on the ship at all?

Jordan was in the middle of testing a crew member's blood against ammonia. The girl had some powerful DNA, actually the strands of DNA made sure that it would survive. Making the cell attack foreign cells, attach, mutate and shoot the foreign cell with her DNA. Doc watched as it did precisely that to the fatty cells of a pig even though it was in a petri dish of ammonia. "Interesting." He muttered and jotted down the results.

Getting up from the microscope, tugging off his gloves and tossing them in the nearest waste basket. He moved to wash his hands, dried them, then leaned on the counter to rub his eyes. He still had a few people to go through on the ship. Physicals, testing of powers and mutations. He had found some interesting powers that not even the sci-fi channel writers had found. He smiled at that and shook his head.

He could hear someone approaching. He paused before starting his next series of tests on the girl's blood. He raised a brow when they stopped at his door, then finally knocked. Sighing he glanced at his test, then at the door. Nearly bellowing that he didn't want any girl scout cookies he groaned lightly when he heard the captain's voice.

Doc couldn't very well turn down the captain now could he? Yes. He could turn down anyone he was still his own man. He rolled his eyes at himself, then smirked, "I'm decent but there's some feminine parts still open to the eyes." His gaze shot over to the petri dish, it was the truth after all. Pausing for a moment he wondered if they would come in, "Come in." He muttered loud enough for them to hear at the door.

He hadn't moved from his place at his sink, his arms now folded over his chest, ankles crossed over one another, his eyes now on the door. The captain hadn't said a name so it couldn't really be his new toy lover that he had kept hidden. Another new crew member, taken from the beaches of Hawaii? They must really be lonely or a real trip to want to leave Hawaii to live on a ship.

Nate bit back a groan and gave Gwen an uncomfortable smile when Doc mentioned that he had 'feminine parts still open to the eyes'. "The doc is quite a joker", he explained, trying to ease the girl's worries. I swear, if he scares this poor girl, I'll show him my new frozen balls technique, the captain mused irritably, just before they received the word to ‘Come in’.

There stood Doc Jordan, arms crossed, ankles crossed amidst the tools of his work…a microscope stood, still lit…Petri dishes and agar plates were scattered around his work space…Ahhhh, Doc had been busy with some new mad doctor experiment on mutant cells and we disturbed him, Nate decided as he took it all in.

Taking Gwen by the hand, Nate introduced, “Doc Jordan, This is Gwen Gregory. Gwen, Doc Jordan”. Nate offered a stool for Gwen to sit on. “Doc, Ms. Gregory is blessed with telescopic vision and telepathy, however, her telepathic abilities are wild and untrained and causing her excruciating pain. I can think of no one better qualified to help her, Jordan…”, Nate meant that sincerely, he had the highest regards for the doc’s abilities and , truth be told, he actually liked the ornery ol bastard.

He walked over and leaned on the counter next to the doctor, “…so, I’m going to get Rosemary to work with her as far as the telepathy, but she really needs your help with these headaches…”, he rubbed at the back of his neck, “…I’ve seen, Jordan. They’re bad. Bloody bad. I don’t think this girl has had any peace of mind since her mutant abilities manifested”.

Leaning there, suddenly, Nate felt a bit guilty about barging in on the doctor, even if it was for a good reason…he could at least apologize. “Ummm….look, Jordan, sorry I interrupted your research, okay? This girl was really in pain and I knew you could help…I owe you one!”. He gave the doc a smile and a nudge with his elbow.

If there was someone in there with the doctor then Gwen definitely didn't want to intrude. She nearly stepped back and turned, opening her mouth to say that she could always come back and see him later. Or just not see him. Then the doctor told them to come on in. She sighed and followed Nate in slowly, glancing around to try and figure out who the female was. Not seeing anyone her brow furrowed, then her eyes landed on the petri dish. Her mouth formed an O and she shook her head.

Looking at the doctor after she was introduced she gave a small smile and finally sat down on the stool. She could feel the doctor's thoughts. They were a myriad of...test results, medications and upon being interrupted. The doctor was apparently able to think on two or three things at once, Gwen had met a few people like that. She called them ADD specialists. Pressing her fingers to her temples she tried looking at something else and no hearing their thoughts.

The room was amazingly spotless. It was cleaner than any other doctor's quarters she had been in. Every surface gleamed and the smell of clorox graced her nostrils. Gwen sighed happily and thought about moving in with the doctor. Surely he was the cleanest on in the whole ship, she could try and help him with his studies. He wouldn't need a microscope with her around.

She let them talk, as if she wasn't there. She was used to it. Many times her father had done the same thing. Gnawing a little on her bottom lip, she rubbed her hands together, then started fidgeting with her own fingers. Granted she still had a headache, but it had reduced itself to something normal, something most humans could handle.

Looking up after their muttering had finished she glanced between the two. "I...I can come back later." She knew the doctor was somewhat annoyed. Whether Nate knewthat or not was debatable. But if the doctor had been around Nate long, surely he knew. Jordan seemed to be a man of privacy. Gwen wondered how he had ever decided to become a doctor, for all she could tell he hated many and liked few.

Jordan watched Nate come in, and the small slip of a girl. "Finding them young now are we?" His brow raised slightly as he took her in. Introduced to her he nodded his head in greeting, not moving other than that simple motion of acknowledgment.

As Nate talked, Jordan kept his well trained eyes on the girl. She was in pain, he could see that. Starting from her hair and working his way down he took in every detail. The pain was still behind her eyes, she felt it bearable now. The pallor to her skin was telling a different story, her body was highly stressed, enough to not be sweating to get the foreign feelings or objects out. Then again telepathy was not foreign and could not be sweated out, but bodies sometimes did not know their own mutations too well.

Gwen had that haunted look of being in doctors offices and hospitals before. The bastards before probably didn't know what to do with her at all. Jordan would have to work on trust issues, that was if he actually cared whether he was trusted or not and became a normal caring doctor within the next few seconds.

Deep down, there was a part of him that cared, especially since this girl was a fellow mutant, but would he admit that. No. Never.

As Nate finished Jordan's eyes slid over to the captain. A small smirk played across his features as she was nudged, "Yes, you owe me big time. Didn't even think of bringing me a lei and I'm in here slaving away for our causes." Clicking his tongue he unfolded his ankles and stood straight. He moved toward Gwen, cupping her chin in his hand and taking out his pin light. Shining it in her eyes he nodded as she grimaced, "Still sensitive to light I see. She has what us normal lowly beings call a migraine now." He reached out with a third arm, grabbing a syringe. His fourth arm crossed to a cabinet, his eyes following it as he grabbed a small bottle. "This is to open your blood vessels, get more blood flowing through your body. Best way to lessen the pain without having you loopy for your sessions with Rosemary."

He glanced over at Nate, "This is the best I can do for now, until I know what medications she is one and until I can flush her system out." Jordan eyed Gwen, "And why come back later to interrupt me again?" Another small smirk as he injected the serum into her system as gently as possible. "This won't have any side effects, unless you cut yourself of course. Then you better come back and interrupt me again."

Writing down her medication as he told her to list them off he studied them for a moment and shook his head. "Fools, probably haven't been to a single college for their degree. Probably passed down from generation idiot to generation neanderthal." Walking over he looked through another drawer for a few seconds. "Concentration and focus, 10 mg, now this might cause some discomfort behind your eyes, not like you're having now. It's herbal, take it once a day, and it won't have any side effects with your former medications. No matter what you do, don't take what those idiots gave you. In my book, there's no wonder why you're having migraines with what they prescribed."

Looking back over at Nate as he put the bottle of pills in Gwen's hand, he raised a brow, "Anything else, Captain?"

Nate watched with a smile as the doctor’s well trained eye’s looked Gwen over…he’d seen Jordan in action before and was constantly amazed at the man’s talent…he was a truly gifted individual. Although he was grateful to have a doctor of such incredible skill aboard, that didn’t blind Nate to Jordan’s not so palatable traits…his sarcasm, hermit-like behavior at times and his vindictive nature when he feels he’s been wronged. Then there was ol Doc’s sexual escapades…well, Nate couldn’t really point fingers there…it wasn’t like he was an angel himself…yeah, best to leave that subject alone. Hopefully, Gwen wasn’t reading any stray thoughts of Jordan’s playtimes.

He stifled a grin as the doc mumbled and grumbled over the incompetence of the medical field at large as he examined and worked on Gwen…while, Jordan did actually feel that most other doctors were bumbling idiots, his grumbling here masked one simple thing…he cared. Jordan was a tough guy, but beneath it all he had a heart of gold and that’s why Nate loved the guy. He’d never tell him that in a million years, but he thinks the doc knew it anyway…he had to…that why he gave him so much shit all the time!

“I think we’ll start your lessons with Rosemary after we leave Hawaii, Gwen. Is that okay?”, he asked as the doctor was injecting her with the pain relieving serum. “After the doc gets you properly medicated, I’ll call us a cab and we can go to your apt and get everything you want to bring aboard. Everything else we can donate to charity, if that’s not a problem”. He turned around and looked into the microscope and jumped back, “Damn, Jordan! What in the bloody Hell are you looking at in that dish, some kind of mutated piranha cells?!”.

With Gwen’s treatment completed, Nate crossed back over to where the pair stood and rubbed the girl’s back, “Didn’t I tell you he was the best? I knew Doc could help you, Gwen”, he soothed. Turning to look at the doc, he smiled and grabbed the man by the shoulders, “Jordan, what would I do without you? What would my crew do without you?!”…then he kissed him on the head and winked and exclaimed, “I owe you big time, my friend! Take a break from all of this and go enjoy a bit of Hawaii! Get yourself lei’ed! If you can’t, I promise to pick up some flowers on the way back and lei you myself!”…he grinned and teasingly wiggled his eyebrows.

Leading Gwen to the door, he whispered, “Don’t mind all of that. Stupid guy humor”. She was such a pretty little thing…he knew the boys onboard would all be tripping over themselves to catch her eye when they were introduced. Heck, he would have been one of them, but it was too late for him now…he’d fallen in love.
Reaching into his pocket, Nate retrieved his cell phone, “Do you know the number of a local cab, Luv?”.

As Jordan and Nate seemed to talk around and over her, Gwen took the time to try to relax. It wasn't helping. She closed her eyes, only to open them as she heard one of the men move. It was the doctor, and he was studying her like a hawk watched a mouse across the field. She swallowed, watching his every move.

Jumping a little as there seemed to be extra limbs stretching out of the doctor, she rubbed her eyes. Watching the two other hands she bit down on her lip. He was a mutant. Yes, this should be granted, Nate had told her that there were other mutants on this ship. It was a ship of mutants. There was nothing to worry about. The doctor was fairly clean, even through he didn't put gloves on when he stuck her with a needle she wasn't sure was sterile!

There was a question. She glanced up at Nate, trying to figure out what she had nearly missed hims aying. She nodded, "It'll be fine. If she has time and wants to teach me." She lifted a shoulder, not the one with the needle sticking out of the lower arm. She eyed Jordan for a moment, desperately not wanting to think about him touching her.

Jumping then at Nate's exclamation she sighed. Pinching the bridge of her nose as she took the medication from the doctor. There was so much going on. She would read the bottle later, before she took it. Just to make sure. Then she would throw away her prescriptions, as the doctor here wanted her to. For now, she was under his care and had no choice but to trust his judgement. Surely she could do that.

As Nate moved to go so did Gwen. She didn't really feel comfortable alone with the doctor, now that she knew a little bit about his personal life thanks to Nate and the 'good' doctor's thoughts. She made a face as she felt the blood rush through her body, it was like there was a small weight lifted off of her. Biting her lips she nodded and tried to think of the number, "Um..." She finally rattled off the number to Nate, turning her head and giving a small smile to Jordan, "Thank you."

Already she was seperating her belongings into two seperate piles in her mind. The things she could live without, and the things that she couldn't. Half of her clothes she could get rid of, since she wasn't going to be waitressing. Her dance clothes she would not part with, dancing was in every city. Her pictures she would take. Gwen tried not to think of what she would really be leaving behind. She would be alone, on a ship, with others like her yet not like her. She would be without her father, without Keri, without her life. She would have to be okay with that.

As Jordan did his duty, he could not help but smirk at Nate's reaction to the cells. "Well well well, you let things on the ship that you don't know anything about." He smirked as he studied Gwen some more. "You know you let the girl that those cells came from on board about...hmm a month ago I do believe." His eyes drifted over to Nate and he smirked some more.

As he finished up and just made sure that Gwen wouldn't pass out on them, he raised his brow when Nate kept rambling about how much of a good doctor he was to the girl. Of course he was good. Then there was touching. Both his brows raised as there was a kiss to his head and Jordan nearly growled. Nate was a touchy feely guy, Jordan knew this, he could deal with it. Jordan just didn't like being touched without more being promised and done later on.

He snorted and shook his head. "I'm afraid Hawaii is a bit to hot for my cold blood, Captain. I'd much rather stay in and slave away over pirhana cells." He shuddered at the thought of going out in that kind of heat. give him cold and snow anyday, hell even rain. He'd go for anything like that. Just not hot-enough-to-fry-an-egg-on-beaches or seeing people that shouldn't be wearing anything less than an astronaut suit out in bikinis and speedos. Those just weren't his cup of tea.

Smirking again he watched Nate, "Guess that makes your lei'd promise a fact hmm?" He teased the captain right back. Really? He didn't think that the captain would come back with a lei for him at all. Nate had much bigger problems.

As Gwen told him thank you he nodded, "Do as I say and we won't have any issues. See ya around." He waved a hand, watching them leave, before he went back to his studies.

Leaving sickbay, Nate tried to keep the conversation upbeat, "So, Gwen, I could tell that Jordan liked you right off the bat. He's not the demonstrative type, but he's a good guy. Trust me on that", he smiled at the meek girl as they moved along the hallway. He was glad that he had met Gwen. She semed like such a nice girl and he was sure that she would fit in well with the rest of his 'family'. He knew that Vivvy, Serena, Mags and Nikki would do their best to welcome her and befriend her, each in their own way.

"How would you like to grab a bite to eat in our galley and then I'll show you where you'll be rooming, before we head out to get your things, eh?", he asked cheerily, steering her towards the large double doors of the galley, which Mags always left impeccably spotless Thank God, he thought. "Mags always seems to make up some snack plates and store them for folks who like to nibble between meals. She's real thoughtful that way", Nate explained, as he walked into the large kitchen area and opened one of the huge industrial fridges. "Is there anything special you have a taste for, Luv? We are quite well stocked here...with food as well as drink". He selected three large platters and carried them out to a table and set them down. "What would you like to drink? We have everything". Bring in cool pitchers of the drinks and freshly steam-cleaned glasses, Nate sat across from Gwen and smiled... "Dig in, Gwen, there's plenty. I've put some fried chicken in the toaster oven to warm up and we have potato salad, cole slaw, deviled eggs, macaroni salad, biscuits or I could get you something else".

Hearing the toaster oven ding, Nate jumped up and retrieved the chicken and placed it in the center of the table and continued chatting, "So...I think I'd like to room you with a very sweet girl named Nikita. I like her very much and I think you will too. She's a shapeshifter. Nikki and her brother, Alex, came to live with us a little over a year ago". He twirled his fork around in his potato salad and grinned to himself, "Y'know, It might not seem like all that long ago, but now...I don't know what I'd do without them".

Resting his hands on his chin, he looked at Gwen with warm brown eyes, "We'll go over and checkout your new room after you put at least a little of that in your tummy. I saw Nikki hurry out with her beach gear.I'm pretty sure she's not back yet, but she won't mind if we pop in to take a look. I think she'll be glad to finally have a roomie".

As Nate talked about the doctor, Gwen couldn't help but snort a little. "But...he doesn't really like anyone." She glanced up at Nate, "Hate to tell you that but he's just on here for his own personal reasons, nothing to do with anyone else." She lifted a shoulder and sighed, "I figured you knew that."

Then he talked about food. Her stomach gave a light rumble, only audible to her ears she hoped. She nodded, "That would be great." She gave him as mile. Watching him work on bringing out the platters of food, Gwen wanted to help. He seemed to not want her to help though. She bit her lip, trying to stay still. Finally he seemed finished. She shook her head, eying the food as her stomach gave another small growl. Filling her plate she answered, "This is more than enough, I don't want anything else." She began eating in small bites, trying to gage whether or not her body was ready for food after the headache or not. The doctor had said that she still had one, but it was mainly the normal pain she suffered every day really. It was minor to her now, where as when she first started gaining this power she cried like a small child would with a broken bone.

"Thank you." She said then watched him get the chicken. The man was too much. She'd never known a male help himself to food, it was always 'woman get me this!' or something along those lines. Unless they were a father, the only parent. She eyed Nate for a little while, there had been no thoughts on him taking care of a kid by himself. "Are you not going to eat?" She asked after he paused for a moment and raised a brow at him. She was starving, what she ate before hadn't been much at all.

Smiling a little at the thought of a roomie, Gwen smiled, "Nikita is a pretty name." She did hope that Nikita would like her, but it was kind of hard for people to like an OCD person. It was annoying, especially living with one. The roomie thing probably wouldn't last for very long at all. "Does she change into other people or what?" Now that would be scary if she changed into other people. Gwen had a horrible thought of waking up to see Leatherface staring at her. She shuddered, eying her food and making herself eat after that thought passed.

She giggled, "So you're the 'ship' of tourists everyone was buzzing about this morning. I didn't know that an actual ship had pulled in, just thought that they were using it for the number of people." She lifted a shoulder, now she knew. If the tourists ever let on their mutant powers, the natives wouldn't be as happy as they were at first. Fathers would be dragging in their daughters and shutting them away. She sighed and shook her head, "That would be nice, give me an idea of how much room I will have for my things. I can make a better judgment on what to leave behind and what to take with me. My friend and father will take care of most of what I leave." She lifted a shoulder, "Mainly Keri though." She gave Nate a small smile.

Continuing eating for a while she finally pushed her plate away, then stood. She picked up her plate and what utensils she used and carried them over to the sink. Washing them off in steaming hot water and plenty of soap she waited on Nate's things. Washing them as well she put them away as best as she could, then turned to start putting up the platters. Nate had put them out, it was only right that she put them up, right?
