About: | What goes on here? Why did you create another remix challenge? This challenge is the brainchild of poisontaster and girlguidejones. We were yammering endlessly one evening -as you do- awaiting the public unlocking of remixredux08 and discovered that we shared some common hopes for our remixes. The big one being hope that particular stories of ours were chosen by our remixers. To that end, we've created a twist on the remix: a challenge where the participants get to choose EXACTLY which of their stories is re-written, and are in turn given a specific story that they MUST rewrite. No choices, no do-overs. Hence the scary comm name of kamikazeremix! Aren't you just copycatting the original remixredux08? No. Well, okay, maybe a little. There are some key differences, however. One, this challenge is limited to Supernatural fanfic only. And, two, the authors get the privilege of choosing which of their stories gets remixed, in return for surrendering the ability to choose what they themselves write. (While we're on this subject though, PT and GGj want to publicly fawn over musesfool and the entire team over at remixredux08. We both had a blast with this year's remixing fandango, and may have So I get to pick any SPN story I've written and FORCE someone else to re-write it? Yep. That's pretty much it in a nutshell. Although, we are limiting this to SPN fic only. (And no RPS/RPF.) Why? Are you RPS bigots? Wow. You really need to spend more time at poisontaster's LJ. Ha! No, we aren't. We recognize that this is a very restrictive challenge; in fact, we WANTED it that way. But at ground level everyone signing up *knows* Sam and Dean, and the expectation that you can all write them -albeit in different circumstances than you might usually- is not unreasonable. A lot of these same folks adore ALL the J's (Jeff, Jared, Jensen, and Jim!), but couldn't write a believable story about them if their lives depended on it. *koFF*GGj*Koff* This does not a happy challenge make. What's the catch? You will in turn be subjected to the brute force that is someone else's muse battling your own. No take-backs. What if I'm willing to write, but don't want to surrender a story to be remixed? HELLLLLOOOOOOO there, little girl. Climb into my van and have some candy! Translation: We Want You! You could become the MVP of this whole thing, otherwise known as the Pinch-hit Writer. If someone defaults, we will be calling on you as soon as we schedule the mandatory shunning. You'll need to turn a story -a SPECIFIC story- around in short order, with possibly only five days to work with. If this isn't your MO, then signing up as a pinch-hitter is probably not a good idea. AND, to keep things interesting, you'll need to submit to the same conditions as the participants: you don't get to pick what you write. We'll hand you something, and you run with it. Can I sign up as both a participant and a pinch-hitter? By all means, Xena. If you're that badass, we WANT to know! Is this a secret challenge? Why yes, yes it is! I have limits! We don't care! Okay, maybe we do. Sorta. THE FEW, THE PROUD, THE RULES 1. The story you submit for remix must be between 500 and 25,000 words, and be available outside of friendslock, either at LJ or hosted somewhere else. It MAY NOT be a remix of someone else's story (although we will allow you to submit a story that has been previously remixed, should you so desire.) 2. No crossovers, and no AUs where Sam is a dentist and Dean is the guy who fills his laughing gas tanks, please. We are brutal, but not *that* brutal. The same reasoning applies here as does for RPS- it's unreasonable to expect someone else rewrite fic about people they don't even know. In that same vein, the story you submit for remix must center around canonical characters. This doesn't mean that there are no OC's allowed, but rather that you cannot submit a story told mainly from an OC's POV, or mainly ABOUT an OC. 3. The story you write must be at least 1000 words. 4. You MUST WRITE THE STORY YOU ARE ASSIGNED. No give-backs, take-backs, trading with other participants, or mulligans. You may NOT change the pairing. 5. Since you choose just one story to be re-written, there is no minimum number of prior stories required for participation. 6. This challenge is open to our friends at IJ and JF as well, so long as y'all are cool with posting your stuff here at LJ. 7. If you roll the dice and then drop out after you get a pairing you don't like, you aren't eligible for future kamikazes. I didn't hear anything in there about wincest. Or het. And...you won't. Look. This is SRZ BIZNESS. We don't know who's going to sign up. And we don't know what everyone's going to submit for rewrite. We could get 6 genfics, 7 wincest, 1 wee!cest, 1 daddy!cest, 1 AU where Mary lives and 3 hets. Even Jessica Simpson can do the math and figure out that your odds at a Vegas craps table are far better than being guaranteed the pairing of your choice. In short, if you are not willing to write ANYTHING, then we thank you for reading this far. This is not the challenge for you. Who is crazy enough to sign up for something like that? Frankly, we aren't sure. We envisioned this being a pretty small challenge, and discussed numbers as low as ten or twelve people actually biting. But our position is that if our challenge produces ten more great stories to help fandom as a whole make it to premiere week, we'll be thrilled! I really want to do this challenge, but why won't you just pair me with a het/gen/wincest/daddycest writer like I requested? See above, for starters. But in addition to that, PT and GGj are totally owning the concept of this being a scary challenge where you surrender a lot of control. Our intent was to create a different sort of challenge that would appeal to a smaller segment of writers. It's *SUPPOSED* to make you nervous. You may very well receive your assignment and go "OMG, where is the closest, tallest building I can jump off of?!!?11" If this isn't appealing, we get that. It doesn't mean we don't like you; we probably read your stories and love them. It just means our crazy-ass idea isn't for you. No harm, no foul. In the end...it's called kamikazeremix for a reason! Shut up already and tell me the dates. Oh, yeah. Sign-ups: Wednesday July 16 thru midnight on Wednesday July 23. Assignments go out: Saturday July 26. Stories due: Monday August 25th Pinch-hit calls for help: go out Tuesday August 26th. Stories made public: Monday Sept. 1st Reveal: Monday Sept 7th Great. I have smoked the crazycrack. Where do I sign up? As you can see, the first Kamikaze Remix Challenge has ended. We will post when we are running the challenge again * your writing name or LJ name * your email address (so we can email you with your assignments) * the link to your chosen story, whether it be on LJ, IJ, JF, or to a website * 100 words or less about why you want someone to redux that PARTICULAR story. Please note that this is supplemental info for the remixer. It is not required that the remixer adhere to the requests or use the hints. Examples: BAD: I want someone to take my story and set it in Arizona instead of Maryland. And have Dean break his leg. GOOD: I have always been curious to see if this story would work in another setting. OR: I thought my Dean characterization in this story was lacking, and hope someone can do a better job. * whether you are or are not interested in pinch-hitting Kamikazeremix Sign-up Template: Author or LJ name: Email addy: Link to story: Why you chose this story: Are you willing to pinch hit as well: (choose Y/N) Pinch-hit ONLY Sign-up Template: Author or LJ name: Email addy: We will require a reply from your email addy stating that you've received your assignment. How do I post on the comm? You don't. At least not right now. Comment to the sign-up post to participate. (The sign-up posts will be screened. Please do not ask any questions in the sign up post. Replying to a screened post makes it visible to others; therefore, we won't respond to any questions on the sign-up post.) What you WILL, want to do, however, is "watch" the community, so you get to see when/as stuff goes up or if we have any important modly announcements. What if I have more questions before I actually commit? You can post them as replies to this post and either PT or GGj will respond. The replies to this post are NOT screened. You may also send a message to the kamikazeremix comm and one of us will reply. We strongly encourage you to ask your Q's in public, however, because other people might be wondering the same thing. How do I actually post my fic when it's ready? More about that later. Translation: We are technophobes who barely got this comm up and running. We need MOAR TIME to get that info ready. Heh. If you are technophobes, how did you get such a nifty-looking comm layout? The truth is, we are SUCH technophobes that quietdiscerning is solely responsible for the snappy design and uber-cool look of kamikazeremix. Our deepest thanks go out to her! | ||||||||||
